the city for the big fireworks show. >> this is a live picture of the traffic right now at the bay bridge toll plaza. traffic is actually looking a little better than it did in the 4:00 hour. >> not bad. here is the sky way in san francisco. as you can see on this fourth of july not bad at all. really pleasant. good evening. citizetens of thousands of are expected for the fireworks show. >> reporter: the show is expected to start about 9:00 p.m. with the actual display at 9:30. there's a bit of fog rolling in but people already know where they will be when the lights are in the sky. some folks say they will be standing here. other people inside boats. one man says he'll be on a cruise ship.

as the show, countdown begins peace, good vibes and lots of red, white and blue are here at pier 39, local family and tourists are enjoying a nice stroll along the water. they are all looking for the big fireworks show tonight. people seem to be in a festive, patriotic mood. >> spending time with family and relatives and incredible things in the past that they did for us. >> probably be able the see from the ship. it's a pretty big ship. >> we're hoping to find a nice green area to sit in and enjoy the fireworks over the water. that's what we're looking forward to all day today. >> reporter: everyone seemed to comment about how chilly it is today. it is summertime in san francisco. if you're planning oncoming down to see the show bring a nice, light jacket, scarf or blanket so you'll be nice, cozy and c e comfy watching all the lights in

the sky. that's the latest from pier 39, abc 7 news. >> thank you. let's check in with the meteorologist for the fireworks forecast. >> the all important forecast. what about the fog? >> it will be fog for some of the fireworks festivities. the majority of the region will have clear skies. you have the fog already making its presence known. here are the problem areas. very typical for this time of year. fog over san francisco. most location will be clear. you have plenty of stars. temperatures in the mid-50s to 60s. we're talking about the numbers trend. that's ahead. see you shortly. residents woke up to a familiar sight on the fourth of july. people living on mahoney street says someone has been leaving american flags on their lawns

for decades. >> it is nice because it reminds us of what the fourth of july is for. >> the flags are left early in morning while most everyone is asleep. it's like a fourth of july santa claus. in redwood city the annual parade was packed followed by a lively battle of two marching bands. >> kate. >> reporter: it just keeps going and going. a big red, white and blue celebration. >> happy fourth of july. >> reporter: what better way to get the party started than with a big parade. >> oh, my. >> reporter: anna newman loving the floats. >> look at that one.

i like that one too. >> reporter: grand marshal of this year's parade, award winning director, kenny ortega who helped create disney's high school musical franchise along with many other hits and credits his local alma mater. >> it was four years of drama. >> reporter: families divided over one very loud competition. to determine the best marching band uc davis or stanford. davis may have the numbers but stanford's tree and wonder woman sure pack a lot of punch. >> it's not just a day, a fourth of july day. the idea is serving each other.

>> reporter: amidst the hoopla leave it to 40-year marine corp veteran to remind us what being american really means. >> let's get rid of the politics and remember we're all people. >> reporter: today's endless parade of fun will kick off with a bang. kate larson, abc 7 news. >> on the fourth of july, sharky doesn't stay in the water. as a shark's mascot road a bike at the rose white and blue parade. a little wind didn't stop people from taking part in favorite fourth tradition, grilling out. we found a lot of family gathered for cook outs. >> bart, and cal train are running extra capacity trains for people going to see the fireworks over the bay.

we'll be streaming the fireworks show assuming there's no cloud cover. the state department confirm a north korean missile test was powerful enough to reach the united states. north korea successfully tested its first intercontinue nenal ballistic missile today. it can reach alaska but not hawaii or the lower 48. they have just responded by launching long range guided missiles into south korean territorial waters. stay with abc 7 for updates. a police officer shot the suspect who is still on the loose. abc 7 news reporter is live at the scene with more.

melan melanie. >> reporter: the victim worked here at the valero gas station for about five yeerars. his family tells me he worked 10 to 12 hour days. they say it was all to provide for them. they are devastated and asking why. >> reporter: the family shared this video from this past father's day. celebration that will be one of their last together. >> i can't believe it. i can't believe it. >> birthday on the 12th. he's not going to be here for that. >> reporter: monday night he was working at this valero gas sttion when a robber came in. investigators described what they saw on surveillance video to his daughter. >> jumped over the counter, pistol whipped him and then shot him two times in the back. >> reporter: the family says first responders told them he was conscious in the ambulance but died at the hospital.

a police officer at the 7-eleven across the street heard the shooting, ran outside and shot the suspect who still got away. >> i want to see him and ask him why he did it. you destroy our family's life. >> reporter: in addition to his wife, he leaves behind his daughter and son in college and another son in high school. >> he worked so hard to try to support his family. >> reporter: the family says often working seven days a week. >> whoever did this, i don't know how you had the heart to kill someone so innocent. >> reporter: the family has set up a go fund me page to help pay for funeral expenses. a san jose player nearly drowned in lake tahoe this morning. ma thr matheus silva is on loan.

he got into a difficulty while swimming but is in critical but stable condition. he was transferred to a nearby hospital in tahoe and air lifted to reno. he's in critical but stable condition. two silicon valley bill try to fix some of the country's political problems. health care showdown in the senate. how the bill could lead to more personal bankruptcies. independence day. we have a winner.

u.s. few fourth of july parades in california have more tradition than the one in v vallejo. wayne friedman explains the roots there run deep. >> reporter: it's almost a tale of two cities. in the remains rust and cobwebs cover the now abandoned economic engine that used to power powep vallejo. the navy has been gone so long that even the letters have fallen off. that's one tale. now another on display in a long line winding through town. vallejo has one of the oldest parades. >> the answer is 164. can you believe that? why not. vallejo has been around the long time. it used to be the capital of california in 1852. that's a lot to be proud of.

their policy positions. mark suggested free engineers degrees to get the ball rolling. he's been working on the project project. one california community is supporting the trump administration's plan to the size of the sequoia national monument. it's one that the president wants to abolish or shrink. more now from abc 7 morning news anchor. >> reporter: in the spring of 2000 then president bill clinton came to california to sign a proclamation establishing the giant sequoia monument for the purpose of protecting the grows and restoring the forest. in the 17 years since county supervisor says the forest sfrs has taken a hands off approach to active management in the 3,000 acre plus monument.

>> i don't think people understood by doing nothing you can have a very detrimental impact on the environment today. they recommend the forts sfrs remove thousands of dead or dying trees in a giant monument. the idea is to reduce risk such as massive wildfires. it will cut the monument to 90,000 acres. we know it works. the forest service knows to make this work as well. the politics of it and the litigations strategies of environmental community made it easier that they find it to do nothing. >> i expect the local communities here will do the right thing. >> reporter: an organization that focuses on connecting youth with nature.

>> industries come in. how will that affect a community benefit organization like that. >> reporter: he says wildfires are simply part of the natural eco systems. if this complex system is changed he fears the damage could be devastating. >> those buffer zones around the key core areas are critical. that's the protective zone for the very life blood of california. we get 65% of our water out of those mountains. the federal review is expected to be completed by late summer. the deadline to let the department of interior to know your thoughts is july 10th. let's focus your attention on the affordable care act. >> michael finney is here with

that. >> it's about money. like middle class money is what it's about. this number might surprise you. personal bankruptcy filings are down 50% over the past six years. some of that decline is due to the affordable care act. consumer reports is out with a new analysis. it looks at how the aca may have helped millions of americans from taking the extreme step of filing for bankruptcy. >> reporter: as the senate works on its plan to repeal and replace the affordable care act, katie weber is playing close attention. the 29-year-old is fighting cancer. she says her expensive treatments would have bankrupted her had it not been for the financial protections of the aca. >> i don't know how many mris i've had but like in the dozens. >> reporter: they never ask why people are filing but many bankruptcy and legal experts spoke with agree on this. medical bills had been a leading

cause of personal bankruptcy before health insurance expanded. >> medical bills are unexpected, large and unavoidable. people can run up a really large debt in a very short period of time. >> reporter: since 2010 personal bankruptcy filings have dropped by about 50%. some of that is due to an improve e ed economy and laws pd in 2005. all the experts consumer reports interviewed point to expanded health insurance as a major driver of the decline. >> our reporting found that coverage for pre-existing conditions and also band on lifetime limits were really important because it prevented people that had serious medical issues from having to file bankruptcy. >> reporter: making sure those remain part of the health care reform matters most to katie. >> even when i get better the follow up will be continuous. >> reporter: and likely very

any time. picture from cam showing you a very similar picture to the emeryville camera. low clouds are starting to billow in. fog typical this time of year. out there right now 60s, 70s and 80s. 75 in san jose. we had the fog half-moon bay 60 degrees right now. 76 that number in napa. future tracker temperatures and fog will show you by 9:00 it's not only fog along the coast. you can see it over san francisco and stretching into parts of the east bay like oakland, emeryville and richmond. we look okay for fireworks. a few problem spots that are typical this time of year. by 11:00 the fog will continue to expand. overnight tonight a pretty typical july jevening. temperatures holding in the mid-50s across the board.

abc 7 news was in downtown danville. it's been a hometown tradition since 1975. tens of thousands of people are taking part in a fourth of july tradition in morgan hill. >> reporter: this is more begga hill. happy fourth of july. a lot of people come out here. 50,000 expected here. this year's parade them is america's national park, a hundred years and counting. their are on morgan hill. the firefighters across the country. get this. it's created such a hot ticket. some started leaving their chairs along the route since may.
