angeles. >> and long-standing temperature records could fall in the west finally. >> paul williams has the details. good morning, paul. >> good morning, nick, diane. this week we're concerned about low humidity in the west, particularly desert southwest because of the fires that we're still trying to get rid of. we have the heat strengthening in time to make problems for the silver dollar fire. you combine that with near record heat, the fire threat rising, looking for temperatures in the 100s, and then in the desert southwest we'll climb to the 110s. nick and diane. overseas, the u.s. military has confirmed that north korea did successfully test an intercontinental ballistic missile, possibly capable of reaching alaska. >> that missile blasted 1700 miles into the sky before splashing down into the sea of japan. if it was fired on a flatter trajectory, it could reach alaska or further east. u.s. and south korean soldiers responded by firing deep-strike precision is

missiles into south korean waters. it comes as the u.n. security council is set to hold an emergency meeting later today behind closed doors about the growing north korean threat. president trump is leaving this morning for poland where he'll deliver a policy speech ahead of the g20 summit in germany and his high-stakes meeting with russian president vladimir putin. the white house is calling it a normal bilateral discussion, but russia is billing it as a full-fledged meeting. putin plans to bring up a range of issues from the war on terror and u.s. sanctions on russia, but it's still not clear if russian election meddling will come up. iraq's prime minister is giving credit for what he calls a big victory. but militant fighters are still putting up a fight. abc's ian pannell has the latest. >> reporter: after a grueling eight months, isis is finally on the brink of defeat here. this is iraq's second city and

inside there was a hearing to decide if venezuelan attorney general ortega will face prosecution. the ruling party has accused her of making serious errors while in office. the court also imposed a government-backed loyalist, once sanctioned by the u.s. as ortega's deputy. the widow of an american soldier killed in afghanistan is suing to get money that canada plans to give the man convicted of killing her husband. canada has apologized to that detainee who will receive money $8 million, in a wrongful lawsuit for imprisonment. he was 15 when he was captured by troops following the firefight that killed christopher spear. he sued the canadian government saying it didn't protect him from years of abuse at guantanamo bay. and canadian prime minister justin trudeau appears to have moved on from his bromance with obama. he met with his irish

counterpart in dublin. the focus was supposed to be on trade, but the highlight was socks. he outdid trudeau wearing socks decorated with canadian mounties and maple leafs. he also gave trudeau more than a handful of gifts which left the canadian's aide an a little overwhelmed. now to our blanket coverage of the festivities. >> for the tenth time, joey chestnut won the nation's famous hot dog eating contest. he took down 72 franks and buns in just ten minutes, beating his own world record by two. he averaged one hot dog every 8.3 seconds. >> what an athlete. what an athlete. the women's champion was also a repeat winner, nikki sudo has

found inside his car. and an excited groom goes for a bold move while dancing with the bride. he picks her up and they go for their very first spin as a married couple. what could possibly go wrong? stick around and we'll show you on this wednesday, july 5th. from abc news, this is "world news now." got some nice moves there. >> really? >> yeah, but i'm guessing that didn't end well, just throwing it out there. we're going to start with the emergency meeting at the u.n. security council. over the north korean landmark missile launch. >> the u.n. security council is meeting behind closed doors at the urging of president trump over what kim jong un is calling his latest gift to the united states. his nation's first launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile. >> north korea said that missile flew on a steep trajectory, 1700

miles up before landing in the sea of japan. but analysts say if it were launched on a flatter trajectory it's capable of reaching alaska or even further east. david kerley has the latest. >> reporter: u.s. officials confirm this launch appears to be a major breakthrough, a north korean two-stage intercontinental ballistic missile. supervising it all, kim jong un, it's a missile that could potentially reach the u.s. kim, his military leaders and scientists all celebrating. a success, declared a news reader. north koreans applauding the news. the missile reached 1700 miles high, landing in the water 577 miles east in the sea of japan, angering the japanese. experts believe such a missile might be able to reach alaska. north korea's military calling this the quote, final step in creating a competent and powerful nuclear state that can strike anywhere on earth. that possibility, that escalation coming just days after president trump worried about a nuclear warhead on this type of missile put north korea on notice.

>> the era of strategic patience with the north korean regime has failed. many years and it's failed. and frankly, that patience is over. >> reporter: reaction came in a new tweet. quote, does this guy have anything better to do with his life? hard to believe that south korea and japan will put up with this much longer. perhaps china will put a heavy move on north korea and end this nonsense once and for all. but just two weeks ago mr. trump appeared to have given up on china, quote, it has not worked out. at least i know china tried. and then just hours ago a physical response from the u.s. and south korea. each country firing a short-range missile in a coordinated event. those missiles landing off of the east coast of south korea. the u.s. army is calling it a demonstration of precision firing capability in response to what it called north korea's

unlawful actions on the fourth of july. the u.s. has just requested that a meeting be held at the u.n. security council on wednesday. the u.s. ambassador to the u.n., nikki haley said she spent all day in meetings, talking about this launch. david kerley, abc news, the white house. david thank you. and president trump is hiding to poland today ahead of the g20 summit in germany, and his much-anticipated meeting with russian president vladimir putin. the white house is describing friday's meeting as a normal bilateral discussion. but russia is calling it a full-fledged formal sit-down with an agenda that includes the war or terror, and sanction. the white house is not saying whether the president will confront putin about election meddling. and president trump's effort to continue the voter fraud is facing resistance.

now 40 states say they are unwilling or unable to give information to the voter commission. the information sought includes the last four digits of social security numbers. some are concerned that that data could make it vulnerable to misuse. the president has claimed that millions voted illegally in the 2016 presidential election but has yet to provide any evidence for that claim. and now overseas, iraq's prime minister is congratulating both government forces and brave residents for what he's calling the big victory over isis in mosul. his jubilation coming as fierce fighting still rages in mosul's old city. just days ago, the prime minister declared an end to the isis three-year caliphate in iraq after iraqi forces achieved a major symbolic win after taking al nouri mosque in the old city. meanwhile in syria, another day of intense fighting played out in raqqah. just a day after u.s.-backed syrian opposition forces

breached the 1300-year old old city wall. the u.s. military said war planes hit two small portions of the wall to allow kurdish allies to push through. isis fighters, however, have been fortifying their positions, even booby trapping portions of the old wall to protect their de facto capital in syria. a bipartisan delegation of senators visiting troops in afghanistan is calling on president trump to come up with a coherent strategy to combat the taliban. republican john mccain and democrat elizabeth warren were part of the group. they said it will take more than dropping bombs to win america's longest war, now in the 16th year. >> we need a new strategy, and that means to win. the strategy before was, quote, don't lose. and we lost some brave, young americans and a lot of brave young afghans, we need a strategy to win. the strongest nation on earth should be able to win this conflict.

sanctions president obama imposed in retaliation for russian meddling in the u.s. election. the white house won't say whether the president will raise the issue of russia's interference or whether he believes russia was behind the hack. >> he believes russia was involved. potentially other countries as well could have been equally involved or could have been involved, not equally. >> reporter: trump has also sent conflicting signals whether he's ever met him. telling david letterman in 2013. >> tough guy. i met him once. >> reporter: then later back tracking. >> i don't think i've ever met him. >> reporter: friday he will get his chance with the whole world watching. a senior administration official tells us they expect the white house expects this meeting to be brief, that it is doubtful that russia's meddling in the election will be raised, that it's a waste of time and at this point a loser of a topic.

gloria riviera, abc news, washington. secretary of state rex tillerson is calling north korea's break through missile launch a new escalation of the threat to the u.s. and the rest of the world. in a defiant show of force, u.s. and south korean soldiers responded by firing deep-strike precision missiles into the south korean territorial waters. this comes as the u.s. military confirms that north korea did in fact launch an intercontinental ballistic missile that has the potential to reach alaska. and lieutenant colonel stephen ganyard explains it could possibly reach even farther east. >> they didn't want to overfly japan or russia. the missile itself reached an apex of 1700 miles. which means it could have reached anchorage and wouldn't have been far from reaching seattle. the u.s. has been developing a ground-based interceptor system that's designed to knock down incoming north korean missiles, but it's very complex science.

it's like hitting a bullet with a bullet and although the most recent test was successful, the system itself is barely over 50% reliable. >> thank you very much, stephen. we turn now to the extreme heat wave in the western u.s. and its effect. >> there are at least 30 wildfires burning. with no significant rainfall expected until next week. nearly 25,000 acres have been burned. thanks to the low humidity. >> firefighters are in northern nevada. the earth stone fire has consumed 25,000 acres while the truckee fire is at 30,000 acres. there are seven wildfires burning in arizona. more than any other state. a blaze at a popular resort was started by a fireworks show. the resort employee posts on facebook that the fireworks were great, then the desert started burning.

today's weather in the west won't be much help to firefighters either or much fun in the rest of the country. >> accuweather's paul williams is here with the rest of the forecast. good morning, paul. >> good morning, nick, diane. low humidity causing problems with fires that we already have, even more of a problem because the heat will continue to strengthen. in the desert southwest we're looking for the heat to really continue in the form of 115 degrees toward phoenix and 110 and 100 plus in salt lake city. thunderstorms threaten missouri, illinois and as well as iowa and wisconsin. we are going to see a front push through with strong storms breaking off and beginning to pound the pavement for us in madison, green bay, sioux falls, omaha, duluth and minneapolis. and blinding downpours and tornados. diane and nick.

>> thanks, paul. and the vatican is acknowledging problems at its hospital but dismissing a report. they denied the findings of an investigation that said staff cut corners, ignored safety protocols and put children at risk. they pointed to a second review that praised the hospital and blamed the initial report on disgruntled employees. the vatican is making a serious effort to resolve any problems. british doctors have dismissed an offer from that hospital to help a baby. a terminally ill baby from the uk. the baby's doctors are planning to turn off life support despite his parents. the pope's hospital said it was willing to keep charlie on life support and allow his parents to decide how to end his life. his parents wanted to bring him to the u.s. for an experimental therapy, and president trump had offered to help as well. as we mentioned earlier, president trump arrives in poland today. officials in charge of one of the memorials to holocaust

victims is taking issue with a member of congress. louisiana republican clay higgins narrated a video from inside the gas chamber at what was once the auschwitz death camp. it is now a museum. he said the scene solidified his commitment to protect the u.s. from evil. >> the world's a smaller place now than it was in world war ii. the united states is more accessible to terror like this. horror like this. >> museum officials called that video inappropriate and tweeted a plaque at auschwitz which says you are in a building where the ss murdered thousands of people. remember their suffering and show respect for their memory. and now it's tough to decide if it was a massive fail or success. >> michael shanahan was looking
