illegal fireworks were everywhere. good evening. >> it happens every year despite efforts by police to head it off. officials blame two fires on the activity. laura anthony is at the scene of one of those fires. >> reporter: i'm just off redwood road. those who live in this area with very frustrated yesterday. they said the booms, bangs, they started in the afternoon and went well into the evening and even overnight when an illegal fireworks started this brush fire. >> backyard ferngs are amazing. >> reporter: despite the annual threat of crackdowns and fines, the illegal fourth of july fireworks display went off as big as ever in oakland. as shown on this you tube video. >> i don't think there's anything the police can do to stop it. >> reporter: the show went on despite efforts by oakland police. they both put dozens of extra officers on the streets to try to minimize the dangerous

spectac spectacle. >> we try and we really tried this year. >> reporter: ray kelly says there's only so much police can do. >> it's almost like trying to put your finger in to try to stop the water. it's overwhelming the amount of fireworks that are out there. >> reporter: while there's no reports of serious injury or death, there was some destruction including a garage fire on 52nd avenue where today we found a huge pile of fireworks debris mixed with shell casings. >> sometimes you can't really know if it's a gunshot or the fire crackers. that's how people end up getting killed, innocent people, innocent kids. they need to bring it down a notch. >> the sounds were like boom, boom, boom, boom, boom. it was just -- we're celebrating our independence. it's a shame that fireworks cannot be legally sold in the city of oakland. >> reporter: alameda county sheriff issued about 50 pounds of fireworks and issued eight

citations. >> we're showing you a bit of the debris left behind. firefighters were able to get this place out relatively quickly. as for the oakland police department, they had 100 extra officers on last night. they told me they responded to 125 fireworks calls for but they not issue citations unless they see someone light the fireworks. in the meantime the effort to clean up the debris continues. we're showing you a hot line, a phone number that you can call from the city of oakland if you have debris, fireworks debris still in your neighborhood. live this oakland, laura anthony, abc 7 news. seven people were taken into custody after a fight broke out. some involved were juveniles. the adults involved were aersed and taken to jail. the juveniles were cited and released to their parents. deputies are still investigating what started that fight. a crash involving a charter

bus on the golden gate bridge sent 11 people to the hospital. sky 7 was above the scene this afternoon. the chp says the bus crashed into two vehicles that were stopped in the slow lane near the toll plaza following an earlier crash. the bus was returning to san francisco from the casino. two southbound lanes were blocked for about an hour. a big rig hauling logs overturned this morning in west marin county. the driver was trapped inside the cab and seriously hurt be p the crash closed down fallon road in both directions as they reworked to remove the truck that weighed 4,000 pounds and 18 feet long. a major evacuation at sfo at a terminal because of suspicious luggage. it creates a huge inconvenience for travelers and airline employees there afternoon. abc 7 news reporter kate larson joins us live from the airport to explain what exactly happened. >> reporter: police actually had one of their canine officers come out to inspect the

suspicious piece of luggage. that canine had a positive response which led to the bomb squad being called out here to the airport. they found there was nothing explosive inside just a comforter and some clothing and also a very bizarre story to go along with the owner of that bag that's upset a lot of people. >> we didn't know if there was like a bomb or shooting. >> when we got down here it was just bedlam. everyone was waiting for bags to come off. >> reporter: cell phone video from passengers show people outside terminal one today after sfpd shut down parts of the first and second floors. a check point and outer roadway for an hour and a half all because of this suspicious suitcase. we saw that suitcase. a piece of black luggage being wheeled away by police for further testing. sfpd tell me they later found out the owner of the bag was running late for his flight, decided he didn't have time to check his bag so he abandoned it

in the baggage claim air around 11:30 this morning. he made it on his flight to san diego but for people just arriving to sfo became a very confusing situation with a lot of wbaggage delays. >> that's insane. you leave an abandoned bag, they're going to shut it down because they have no choice. >> i think it was terribly irresponsible. he could have taken his bag to the airline he would fly. they would check it for him at the gate. >> that's so rude. it's inconvenienced hundreds of people trying to get to where they're going or coming home because someone didn't prepare to get to the airport on time. >> reporter: i spoke to southwest baggage employees who say the incident shut them down fn an hour and a half. an extremely busy travel day. it's the day after the fourth of july. all those folks who you heard speaking say they waited an extra hour or so for their bags to come off baggage claim. the bag is being further tested to see if there might have been

anything illegal inside that bag which would have set off that canine officer. it's going to be up to tsa to decide whether they want to fied the owner of the bag or do any other penalties for him. that's the latest here live. abc 7 news, back to you. thank you. unattended suspicious looking bags caused evacuations at two other airports world wide today. in austin, texas an empty abandoned cooler was the blame. in manchester, england, a suitcase that the bomb squad termed was not a threat. police searching for a suspect in a shoot out this morning. the call came in before noon when several people in two cars were reported to be exchanging gunfi gunfire. this happened on connecticut fween 25th and 26th street. a 28-year-old man was shot. he was taken to san francisco general hospital with non-life threatening injuries. a stand off in san jose end ed peacefully. now man accused of hitting his

father is in custody. santa clara county deputies responded to a domestic dispute call today. family members told deputies the suspect had a gun inside the home so deputies proceeded with caution. the man surrendered after a two-hour stand off. the father is expected to be okay. we're learning more about the suspect in monday's gas station murder. police say 42-year-old zepp crouchet killed the cashier at the valero. an officer shot him when he ran from the scene. he died near his car parked on west 20th street. police found his body yesterday. the trial of the suspect in a brutal double murder four years ago at the san francisco jewelry mart is winding down. it was an emotional day. the court packed with victims, family members and friends. vic lee is live at the hall of justice. >> reporter: closing arguments ended just about an hour ago. the case is now in the hands of

the jury. next week will mark the four year anniversary of the double murders be murders. they were extremely vicious over a $300 dispute on the price of a necklace. >> i want him to feel something. >> reporter: cousin of one of the two murder victims. she believe the accused killer has no remorse. to her he's just a cold-blooded murder. >> he has no feeling. he has no feeling for anybody. that's all i can see. >> reporter: white is accused of the brutal murders of two jewelry store clerks. july 12th, 2013, white was in the jewelry mart on brennan street. he argued with store owners. he slit the throat of another employee and went back and slashed limm's throat.

hung fought back and survivored with critical injuries. while fired at police outside the jewelry mart before he surrendered. most was captured on video. the prosecutors showed the graphic violent video inside the store but most chilling of all the audio. you could hear the cries and screams of the victims as they were being stabbed and shot. family members in court broke down. >> i feel the knife putting on her throat, that's why i was really shocked. i heard the bullet and i feel her fear. >> reporter: he says no matter what the verdict it's never going to bring his sister back. it will never heal the wounds from her death. vic lee, abc 7 news. a gym owner has been sentenced to seven years in jail for sexually assaulting more than a dozen women. one under 14. 49-year-old david wolf smith pleaded guilty to 14

it happened 48 hours ago and the gunman is on the loose. >> reporter: she was found shot to death monday inside this home. >> the suspect is still outstanding. he is considered armed and dangerous. we are asking the public for any information. >> reporter: he lives here with four other men. he does not know all of them and was not home during the shooting. neighbor who didn't want to be identified said she seen a lot of traffic there. >> they've had parties before. they had a lot of people coming in and out all the time. >> reporter: we're told surveillance cameras captured video of a group of men driving up. that was about two hours before the homicide was reported. 15 minutes later they got back in their car and quickly left. police won't say whether or not

that footage was helpful. >> hopefully they will get caught. nobody want a murder on the loose. >> reporter: police served a search warrant at the home and doing a follow up. they have determined the suspect knew her. >> not we don't believe there's anybody in that neighborhood that's in any danger. there's still a suspect out there. the firearm is still outstanding. >> reporter: police tell us they are confident they will capture the gunman. investigators say an electric coffee roaster is to blame. take a look at this video from the mountain view fire department. smoke and flames consume a four plex. the fire started in the garage. it spread to the second floor and the attic before firefighters got it under control. no one was hurt. squatters may be to blame for an overnight fire. the two story building on williams road used to house

several medical officers but is now boarded up and abandoned. no one was hurt. a heap of hay turned into quite a fire. the hay was farmed just a few weeks ago and is worth $25,000. crews say they are simply letting the fire burn itself out. district court judge ruled a civil suit can proceed. it's been more than two years since matthew mueller broke into the home. he drug and bound huskins abducted her and held her hostage for two days. he was sentenced to 40 years in prison on a federal kidnapping charge. police initially called it a hoax. the couple is claiming defamation and distre distress. a three judge panel of the nineth circuit court says immigration authorities are subject to a 1997 settlement

that guaranteed court hearings for minors. congress passed laws that overturned the settlement and revoked the right to bond hearings but today they were overruled. the federal government can appeal the decision to larger nineth circuit panel or the u.s. supreme court. thousands of former devry students are getting refund checks. >> the university is paying out $49 million to settle claims that mislead students about job prospects. michael finney has more on this story. >> great news. this is such great news. devry agreed to pay back students. the lawsuit claims devry misled students with ads touting high employment. they claim 90% of the students earned more money than graduates from other colleges. they are refund tuition for 173,000 students. the university will

$50 million in student loans. fcc rules prevent phone companies from proactively blocking certain calls. that allows tell marketers to use fake caller id phone numbers to trick consumers into picking up. it's called spoofing. carriers could screen out calls coming from unassigned phone numbers that could prevent two billion unwanted calls every month. home depot is recalling thousands of crystal chandeliers because they could cause a fire. plastic can melt and burn wires. the company has 39 reports of melted plastic.

only one reported fire. mystery spanning across california. a fire utility truck stolen in southern california ends up here in san francisco. dwa investigators found the truck. the truck was taken on monday. no one was in the truck when they found it and made no arrests. the oakland as have made a strategic hire that could smooth the move to a new ballpark. they have hired chris giles. he worked with the 49ers where he helped open the team is committed to staying in oakland.

i want to show you what the weather will be like. for the evening hours you're looking at temperatures in the 50s to 70s. around 9:00 p.m. temperatures will be dropping, 50s, 60s. it will be clear inland by 11:00 p.m. 50s and 60s for your temperatures. really tonight this evening we are seeing plenty of sun inland. it's not going to stay that way at least not near the coast. the fog as you look at live doppler 7 will be advancing across the bay. some of it is starting to push in that direction. earlier we did have a disturbance that sent high clouds. there were reports of lightning strikes. most has been heading into the central valley. here is a live picture as you look at the sunshining across the bay. temperatures right now 63 in san francisco. it's in the 70s from oakland to mountain view. san jose a warm 88 in gilroy. a picture from san jose.

you'll see the sun right now. the temperatures really not coming up into the 90s. most of you inland in the 80s like concord, livermore. this is what is keeping us comfortable, the fog. that's going to remain with us as we head sbloo tinto the next of days. upper 90s inland on friday. it will be mild at the beaches through the upcoming weekend. 50s to 60s first thing. you'll see the fog around. it will limit visibility for your morning commute. you will want to plan accordingly. for the afternoon, numbers will be rising. 93 in gilroy. on the peninsula you're looking at 70s to 80s. getting you into palo alto, 80 degrees along the coastline. low 60s and breezy with some fog. 66 downtown san francisco. north bay community, 60s along the coastline. 88 in santa rosa head sboing in

the east bay a nice mild afternoon. head inland and it will be a warmer day. 91 degrees in livermore. it will get hotter as we head towards friday. look at these temperatures. we'll be seeing triple digits in our inland areas. the coast will be quite comfortable. you're probably thinking not again. yes. saturday we'll see the temperatures dip a bit. still going to be hot. sunday they come right back up again. along the coastline temperatures will be in the 60s for most of the weekend. from the mid-90s to the low 100s on friday. yes, the triple digit heat will be back in the picture. 60s coast side. the weekend looks pretty typical for this time of year. 60s to 90s. a nice range of temperatures. something for everyone as we head into early next week. we'll see cooler weather, particularly tuesday where we get out of the 90s. 60s coast side.
