practice. doctors say scalise was moved back to the icu over new concerns about an infection. he's also been downgraded to serious condition. scalise has had several surgeries since that shooting. and we have a new development after that republican congressman sparked outrage over a video he posted from the auschwitz concentration camp in poland. >> he has now taken the video down and issued an apology. here's linsey davis. >> reporter: this is the video shot on the grounds of auschwitz that has congressman clay higgins under fire. the louisiana republican recording himself inside a gas chamber, posting the five-minute video online. >> the guards would drop ziclon five cyanide gas from above through hatches. after about 20 minutes, everyone was dead. >> reporter: the congressman then stands in the crematorium.

>> there were three sets of ovens like that. this is why homeland security must be squared away. why our military must be invincible. >> reporter: the response from the auschwitz memorial blunt. inside a former gas chamber, there should be mournful silence. it's not a stage. wednesday afternoon, congressman higgins took the video down and offered an apology, saying his intent was simply to remind the world that evil still exists. linsey davis, abc new, new york. when we come back, hear what mariah carey did with her kids that's stirring up controversy. and the babies look incredibly like john legend. >> reporter: the history channel revealing what it says is a possible new clue that could help explain what happened to amelia earhart. >> you think this is amelia earhart? >> that's right. >> reporter: a former federal agent saying in the national archives, he uncovered this updated photo taken in the marshall islands in the pacific. the man on the left bears a striking resemblance to earhardt's navigator, fred noonan. >> the hairline is the most distinctive characteristic. >> reporter: they believe based on comparative photos, the person facing away from the camera could be earhart. and that mass towed behind the ship matches the length of earhart's plane, with a photo and other documents, the history special makes the claim that she may have been captured by the japanese military. but many are skeptical. >> from an aviation survivability stand point, chances are nil. >> reporter: of this being? >> of this being accurate. >> reporter: u.s. officials have not confirmed any of the show's claims.

and there's nothing like a little panda watching to relieve political tension. angela merkel and xi jinping met to watch those pandas at the zoo in berlin. they are some of our top stories on this thursday, july 6th. from abc news, this is "world news now." >> bamboo never looked so tasty. he's enjoying himself there. we're going to start this half hour off with the latest threat posed by north korea and the trump's administration's vow to defend itself. >> the pentagon now says the missile launched by north korea is not one we've seen before, potentially capable of reaching the western u.s. >> and the trump administration says it is now considering several options, including possible military option against north korea. abc's martha raddatz has details. >> reporter: the missile launched by north korea is more powerful and more sophisticated than anything that country has ever tested before.

a two-stage, intercontinental ballistic missile, blasted straight up into space, some 1700 miles high. but here's what is so alarming. if the north koreans angled the trajectory for distance instead of altitude, experts say it could travel well over 4,000 miles, meaning it could potentially hit alaska or even come close to seattle. kim jong un gleefully calling it a package of gifts on independence day. in response to the north koreans, the u.s. and south korea launched short-ranged missiles off the coast of the korean peninsula. there is still time for diplomacy, but the u.s. ambassador to the u.n. said is a dark day. >> time is short. action is required. the world is on notice. >> reporter: this is exactly the kind of missile the u.s. knew the north koreans were working on. but never expected it to be launched this soon. experts say it is years ahead of schedule.

martha raddatz, abc news, washington. and president trump is delivering a speech in poland today before a gathering with world leaders in hamburg, germany. the polish government rolled out the red carpet as he arrived in warsaw and they planned to bus people to watch the speech, butt but the world will be watching tomorrow as well as he meets with vladimir putin at the g20 summit. they're expected to discuss syria, isis and sanctions, but not russian election meddling. about 300 isis fighters are trapped in mosul. as the iraqi stronghold winds down. those militants are confined to a 5,000-square foot area. as troops move in, civilians are leaving mosul by the thousands. some are being detained and some told to strip. in an effort to find militants. a number of female fighters disguised as civilians have conducted suicide bombings. a new york city police officer is being remembered for devotion to family and

community. family and friends attended a vigil for the officer miosotis familia. she was shot in the head while sitting in the police car with her partner. she was a nurse before joining the pd. she leaves behind a daughter and 12 year old twins. police in texas released this video of two people trapped in a car. their car flipped into a drainage canal. after it crashed. they are being hailed as hero. they pulled them from the upside down car submerged in four feet of water. the woman later died and the husband remains in critical condition. no word yet on the cause of the crash. >>. the parents of a terminally ill baby in the uk are expressing hope after another opportunity. the vatican has offered to help, but the doctors and courts have said no, citing the best interest of the child.

james longman has more. >> reporter: a family facing the greatest loss imaginable. caught in an international tug-of-war regarding their dying child. charlie gard has a genetic disease. he's unable to see, hear or even breathe on his own. british doctors say there is no cure. they want to switch-off the machine that keeps him alive. days ago, his parents pleading to bring him home to die. >> we've promised our little boy every single day that we will take him home. because that is a promise we thought we could keep. >> reporter: but then new hope. the pope lending the family support. the vatican children's hospital offering charlie treatment. the british government has blocked that move. agreeing with doctors who insist it would be cruel to keep him alive. >> it's an unimaginable position for anybody to be in. >> reporter: charlie's parents have raised nearly $1.7 million to pay for experimental treatment in the u.s. this week president trump

tweeting, if we can help little charlie, we'd be delighted to do so. a little boy remains very sick in this hospital, but his mother has said the support from the pope and the president has given us hope. but his future remains uncertain. james longman, abc news, london. a virginia woman in need of a kidney is taking extreme measures. she placed this ad on the back of her suv. on it, the words needed, type o kidney and a phone number to call. the facebook post has been shared hundreds of times. she lost her father and others to kidney disease. she's been on a waiting list for three years now. her doctors are urging anyone willing to donate a kidney to act quickly. peruvian officials have used technology to recreate a queen. she ruled the valley about 1700 years ago. the life-sized bust is wearing the crown found next to her remains and a replica of her mummy is on view to the public.

and the 55-year-old says he has not been promoted to crew chief despite having more experience than nine of the ten. he alleges the bad blood between the two men started in this game back in 2001. joe torre was outraged over this call. getting in hernandez's face, joe torre was tossed from the game. >> something happens to one of the teams. >> reporter: hernandez claims torre took to the media to insult him. hernandez just wanted to be noticed over there, and once he assumed his role, the notion that hernandez wanted to be noticed permeated his evaluations as an umpire. >> it's hard to know whether joe torre is holding a grudge or not. when you look at the history of baseball and the way grudges are held, it doesn't seem so ridiculous after all. >> reporter: t.j. holmes, abc news, new york. and abc news has reached out to hernandez, the umpire's union as well, and joe torre. so far, no one's commenting. >> these kind of disputes not unprecedented in baseball. >> no.

>> reporter: president trump landed in poland to a red carpet welcome. as all eyes look ahead to friday's meeting with russia's vladimir putin. the white house is now trying to down play the face-to-face calling it a normal bilateral meeting between foreign leaders at the g20 summit, but the kremlin calls it a full-fledged sit down and has an agenda. as to whether their is their first meeting, president trump has told conflicting stories. >> i met him once. i have no relationship with putin. i don't think i've ever met him. >> reporter: one thing he has been consistent on, singing his praises. >> he's been a leader far more than our president has been a leader. >> reporter: 17 u.s. intelligence agencies agree russia interfered in the election. as for the president? >> he believes that russia probably was involved, potentially some, you know, other countries as well could have been equally involved or could have been involved, not equally. >> reporter: in the oval office, president trump bragged to russian officials about firing fbi director james comey who was

leading the russia investigation and sources now tell abc news it is unlikely the president will confront putin about the election meddling. one senior administration official says the whole thing could be a waste of time and quote, a loser of a topic. cecelia vega, abc news, warsaw, poland. and the trump administration is demanding global action in response to north korea's launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile. otherwise, the u.s. warn military options are a possibility. nikki haley says other options, including punishing countries like china that trade with north korea. north korea's actions are quickly closing off the possibility of a diplomatic solution. >> the united states is prepared to use the full range of our capabilities to defend ourselves and our allies. one of our capabilities lies

with our considerable military forces. we will use them if we must. but we prefer not to have to go in that direction. >> the pentagon says the missile launched by north korea is more powerful and sophisticated than any of its predecessors and is potentially capable of reaching the western u.s. and officials add it may only be a period of time before north korea makes an even longer range missile with a nuclear warhead which would put all of the u.s. at risk. and tensions are building in mosul as coalition troops get ready for what may be the final battle there against isis. the tension is now between iraqi special forces and civilians trying to leave the city. troops trying to guard against possible isis attacks continue to have young men strip to prove they are not carrying bombs. women are told to roll up their sleeves and empty their bags. there was one reported suicide attack wednesday. and syrians are leaving the self-declared capital of the islamic state by thousands. civilians in raqqah loaded

trucks and other vehicles with their belongings as they escaped the fighting. two days ago, forces broke through parts of the wall around raqqah's old city. isis responded by setting up booby traps along the mile and a half barrier. and the u.s. has talked about cooperation with russia for greater stability in syria. rex tillerson released a statement calling for the u.s. and russia to work together possibly on no-fly zones, cease-fires and the delivery of humanitarian aid. tillerson also said russia has an obligation to prevent any further use of chemical weapons by the syrian regime. and tillerson will attend the g20 summit, but a planned stop on the way home is raising eyebrows. he will travel to turkey to receive a lifetime achievement award. for contributions to the oil and gas industry. he was selected for the award last year when he was still ceo of exxonmobil. some are questioning tillerson's accepting that award.

new york city's police force is in mourning. family and friends attended a vigil for officer familia. the police commissioner calls the killing an assassination. she was a single mother of three. she had started working the night shift through the summer so she could spend time during the day with her 12 year old twins. >> very loving, helpful. great person. beautiful human being. she would, she would take the shirt off her back for you. >> and we have an update to another attack on a police officer. the suspect in the stabbing of an officer at the airport in flint, michigan was arraigned on wednesday. he's now also facing a charge of interference with airport security. the officer survived that attack. the laptop ban has been lifted for another airline.

overnight we learned qatar airways has joined other airways. eight predominantly muslim countries, their passengers were not allowed to bring laptops into cabins. there's no word on exactly what the airlines did to satisfy u.s. security concerns. united airlines is apologizing for mistreatment of a passenger yet again. the carrier admits it accidently reassigned a seat purchased for a toddler to another passenger. as a result, his mother was forced to hold the 25-pound 2-year-old on her lap for the entire three and a half hour flight from houston to boston. she had paid close to $1,000 for her son's ticket. >> the flight attendant, when i let her know that these were my seats and the flight may have been overbooked or double

booked, she came back and told me that the flight's full, and she shrugged, and that was the end of it. >> she says she was aware of that infamous incident when a passenger was dragged off a united flight in april. united said the boy was incorrectly checked in at the gate and his seat was assigned to a stand by passenger. whale watching shouldn't be that confusing, you're looking for a big mammal in the water, right? >> there was an imposter in the waters. this was off british columbia. whale watchers caught sight of something that looked like a humpback whale. >> but not so much. that whale apparently has some hair on it. turns out it was a bear out for a swim. >> i think that's cooler, isn't it? whale watching, you expect to see a whale. whale shmale. you see a bear, cool. i didn't know they swam that far offshore. >> whale watching or bear watching. >> the bear and then the bear doesn't show up. >> people get disappointed? >> it's a minefield.

an intense, fast-growing wildfire has forced hundreds of evacuations from some mountain resort towns some 60 miles west of denver, the peak two fire is just one of several in colorado's high country.

federal officials say there are now 34 large active fires in 12 states. these wildfires have consumed more than 200,000 acres. five other fires have been contained. a judge has ordered two long time friends of robert durst to testify at a preliminary hearing at his murder case. the details of that case were featured in the hbo documentary "the jinx." he is charged with killing susan berman. prosecutors in california wanted to question his friends about his state of mind at that time. but the altmans say their testimony is unnecessary and the attorneys will appeal the ruling. we are hearing new details in the disappearance of a visiting chinese graduate student at the university of illinois. >> the man accused of kidnapping her made his first court appearance yesterday and prosecutors are laying out chilling accusations. here is abc's alex perez.

>> reporter: the man who police say kidnapped a chinese scholar, brent christensen, denied bail. >> whoever the criminal is, he's a threat to every other's safety in the community. >> reporter: this video shows ying ying zhang getting into christensen's car. the last time she was seen. investigators have reason to believe she's no longer alive. >> you always want to have a body if it's at all possible. but there's been so many cases where there wasn't a body, and people have been convicted. >> reporter: christensen was even spotted at a vigil for zhang after she was reported missing. and investigators allege he may have been casing the crowd for other victims. a day before he was arrested, authorities say he was captured on police surveillance, admitting he held her in his apartment against her will. on his cell phone, investigators discovered he had recently

visited a fetish website, looking at forums called abduction 101 and planning a kidnapping. the website says it is for consenting adults and will terminate anyone who tries to harm another user. and christensen has not yet entered a plea and is due back in court next week. alex perez, abc news, chicago. >> so when he's at that vigil for the alleged victim, he's casing the place for other victims and apparently was picked up on surveillance, talking about the characteristics of an ideal victim. >> this's what prosecutors are saying and that he apparently threatened someone else whom he had given incriminating evidence to, made some kind of incriminating admission. his attorney is saying the fact he was denied bail is not unexpected. he points out there is no cross-examination at this part of the trial. he's essentially asking people to wait until he makes his case. but they haven't entered a plea yet. >> we'll be keeping an eye on that case, obviously. coming up in the next half hour. the violent shootout between two neighbors with one of them hospitalized in critical condition.

>> sources tell abc news it is unlikely that trump will confront putin over russian interference over the election. and a soldier killed this weekend has been identified. he was just 19 years old. two other soldiers were also injured but are expected to make a full recovery. >> the trump administration is warning that military action is possible against north korea after the successful launch of its first intercontinental ballistic missile. as abc's elizabeth herr reports, the pentagon is more concerned than ever about the potential future of north korean missiles. >> reporter: north korea's latest missile launch now being called more powerful and sophisticated than ever before, the intercontinental ballistic

missile shooting some 1700 miles into space. in other words, according to experts, if the north koreans had angled the trajectory for distance, not height, it could travel well over 4,000 miles, meaning it could hit alaska and even come close to seattle. >> this is what's disturbing. this is what we believe is a miniaturized nuclear warhead, the last piece of the puzzle and we know they're working hard to get it. >> reporter: president trump leaving for europe was asked about north korea. hours earlier, the u.s. responded by joining forces with south korea and firing short-range missiles off the coast of the korean peninsula. this as north korean leader kim jong un continued to taunt america, saying this was a package of gifts on independence day. the u.s. ambassador to the united nations is now urging global and immediate actions, stressing this latest test was not just reckless but dangerous. >> time is short. action is required. the world is on notice. >> reporter: u.s. officials are

calling for tougher sanctions against north korea, adding that the u.s. is prepared to use military force if necessary. diane and nick? >> elizabeth, thank you. chicago's epidemic of gun violence hit record levels over the fourth of july weekend. more than 100 people were shot, and at least 15 of the victims have died. some of the areas hardest hit were guarded by extra police officers. as in the past, much of that violence is gang-related. the police department is conducting a comprehensive review. and we have breaking news from montana where an earthquake was detected. the u.s. geological society has measured a 5.8 quake near the town of lincoln. we will have more updates for you throughout the morning. and nearly a quarter of all the active large wildfires in the country right now are in arizona.

federal and state law enforcement have joined the search for a man accused of setting a number of small fires in that state. and abc's clayton sandell has the latest details. >> reporter: a remote stretch of arizona is the center of a manhunt for this suspect, wanted for allegedly pulling a pistol and shotgun on a forest service employee and opening fire. the employee escaped. now dozens of officers including a fbi s.w.a.t. team have joined the search. police say the suspect appears to be the same man wanted for starting eight small brush fires on monday. the suspected arsonist striking at a bad time, with nearly four large fires burning in the west. this one in breckenridge, colorado and several more near sparks, nevada. this one in camarillo, california. feeding off hot, dry summer weather. it may get worse before it gets better. thunderstorms could bring lightning bringing new fires and 100-degree plus heat will not make the firefight any easier.

the other man was shot four times but survived. and a georgia woman is devastated after her husband was shot to death in an apparent dispute over dog droppings. paul wilson was killed outside early sunday morning. the suspect is a neighbor who thought wilson's dogs used his yard as a bathroom. he was shot twice as he walked the dogs coming home from work. his wife was by his side. >> i went to try to get his pulse, and i put my hand on his back. and i felt him take his last breath. >> the suspect, larry bates, is charged with murder and animal cruelty. police say he killed one of the dogs as well. mrs. wilson said the conflict began two months ago, but she thought everyone agreed to move on. congressman steve scalise has been readmitted to the intensive care unit three weeks after he was shot at a baseball practice.

doctors say scalise was moved back to icu due to concerns of an infection. he's also been downgraded to serious condition. scalise has had several surgeries since that shooting. and we have a new development after that republican congressman sparked outrage over a video he posted from the auschwitz concentration camp in poland. >> clay higgins has taken the video down and issued an apology. here's abc's linsey davis with more. >> reporter: this is the video shot on the grounds of auschwitz that has congressman clay higgins under fire. the louisiana republican recording himself inside a gas chamber, posting the five-minute video online. >> the guards would drop zyklon five cyanide gas from above through hatches. after about 20 minutes, everyone was dead. >> reporter: the congressman then stands in the crematorium.
