reports of something on fire under the overpass. still working to confirm that. sounds like fire units are on the way to the scene. and i'll check drive times in less than ten. >> b.a.r.t. police investigating a violent robbery at the coliseum station in oakland. the second incident like this in three months. according to the chronicle, the latest attack happened friday in the evening commute. at least ten teenagers grabbed a woman's iphone, then another passenger chased the people down and got the phone back. a special b.a.r.t. team intercepted the teens as they tried to escape into the intercepting neighborhood. they were released to their parents because witnesses couldn't identify which one took the phone. >> happening in the south bay, people devastated by the coyote creek flooting are taking action. >> they're filing claims against san jose, the county, and the water district. janine is live in san jose this morning. >> reggie, there has been a lot of finger pointing over who's

responsible. the water dict here says it warned the city about potential flooding, but residents were warned too late. this is the result. here in this video, you can see that east williams street rock springs and the olander neighborhoods were inundated after heavy rain. the residents are now filing claims against the city of san jose, santa clara county and the water district. they're seeking recovery for property losses and pain and suffering. city officials allege they informed the public late because they relied on faulty projections from the water district which showed the creek could hold more water. goo google has just stepped up and donated $100,000 to a nonprofit helping low-income families in the neighborhoods. the residents, they have lost so much. some of them are still not back in their homes. some of them had to actually move out of the area so they're

going to be holding a news conference and that's going to take place at 11:00. reporting live from san jose, abc 7 news. >> thank you. 6:03 now. three weeks after a deadly shooting at a u.p.s. facility in san francisco, only 15 of the 50 or so workers are back on the job. a union official representing the workers say they're still fearful about returning. three drivers were killed and two others wounded in the shooting. the gunman killed himself when confronted by responding officers. >> a mother is expressing frustration following the deaths of two of her sons and the driver accused of killing them was free on bail at the time. that man, lemuel wilson, faces charges of murder, dui, and leaving the scene of an accident. witnesses say he ran from the crash friday night. aida reyes lost two sons, 5-year-old vincent rey esrothenberg and 10-year-old

well. overall, looking maybe partially holiday light still. southbound 101 san francisco to sfo at nine minutes. northbound 880, you're in the green at 13, and northbound 101 highway 85 to the san jose airport, in the green at 12 minutes. one new problem for hayward. we'll check on that at 6:20. >> you likely heard a bunch of illegal fireworks on the fourth. now, officers say they saw an increase this year. the shows went on despite efforts by deputies and oakland police. they received at least 125 fireworks calls, but police say they did not issue a single citation. officers have to actually see someone light fireworks to do that. so neighbors say they wish more could be done. >> you can't really know if it's a gunshot or the fire crackers so that's how people end up getting killed. innocent people, innocent kids. >> well, illegal fireworks are suspected of sparking two fires in oakland, including a garage fire where there's still

fireworks debris. the city of oakland has a phone number on the screen. i don't see it. people can request a crew to come out and clean any fireworks debris. >> san francisco's police commission reaffirmed the backing of the city's controversial sanctuary laws. some wanted the commission to do more. last night's revisions came after the board of supervisors updated the sanctuary policy last year. for the police, that means officers will not cooperate with federal authorities if the goal of any activity is to enforce immigration laws. >> there are certain emergency situations in sfpd can get involved with i.c.e. and customs and border protection. we need to clarify to members exactly under what circumstances that takes place. >> if that evolves into an immigration type enforcement, our policy is clear. we stop it right there. >> of course, this happens after the shooting death of kate steinle which occurred in 2015. the suspect in steinle's death is a mexican citizen who illegally re-entered the u.s. after getting deported.

seat she bought for her 2-year-old son. this is shirley and her son. she was flying from houston to boston last week. she paid nearly $1,000 for her son's ticket. another passenger came up and said he was supposed to be sitting in her son's seat. she held her son in her lap for the entire flight. because she said she didn't want to cause a scene. >> i had him in all these contorted sleeping positions. in the very end, sadly, he was standing up between my knees. >> she says not a single airline employee on the flight asked her why she had a child on her lap. a statement from united said we inaccurately scanned the boarding pass of her son. as a result, her son's seat appeared to be not checked. we deeply apologize to her and her son for his experience. >> this next story shows how a simple argument can get out of control fast. two men in indiana have been fighting for months. last month, tensions reached a

boiling point. heated words exchanged and police say jeffrey pulled out a gun, and then his neighbor dean did the same. it led to a shootout. one man was shot four times. cellar was not hit. he will not face charges because he acted in self-defense. >> you have to see this incredible fight caught on camera at a mcdonald's in santa monica. that's a security guard fighting off several people. witnesses say the men were drinking beer in the restaurant, they didn't buy food. the security guard told them to leave and that's when infight broke out. chairs got involved, the police eventually showed up. it's unclear if anyone was arrested. >> crazy video. and the chair got involved, too, goodness. >> mcbrawl. >> how long have you been thinking about that. did you say mcknuckle sandwich? >> a whopper -- we're full of puns and beautiful sunrise shots. >> let's go to something nicer. >> let's do that. here we go.

look from the exploratorium camera. you can see a gorgeous sunrise developing. a light breeze, that will be the case on the bay today. more light sunshine for all of us. the extended, we have a heat wave developing. look at the lack of winds. 14 in fairfield, that's not a very strong onshore breeze and neither is the 12 at sfo. because of that, look at the clouds. making a late surge across san francisco, but look how quickly they're back by 10:00, 10:30, to the coast. the clouds will open at the coast for more sunshine than you have seen the last couple days. let's see what it does to our temperatures. more sunshine means getting close to average. 79 in milpitas. getting warm around los gatos, morgan hill, and gilroy. santa cruz, sunshine and 76. head up to the peninsula, 80s, redwood city, 82. then 70 at millbrae. temperatures in the low to mid 60s along the coast today. back to average in san

her out. doctors though were not able to save her. a man who was also rescued is in serious condition. >> look at this video out of colorado. those are not class-3 rapids. that's flooding from a water main break in denver. crews will continue to work to repair the damage caused by the 130-year-old pipe that broke. it's the second time this year that pipe has busted. >> new this morning, it appears more gray wolves are living in california. you're looking at pictures taken from a wildlife camera. biologists believe a female wolf gave birth to at least three pups. they're part of the second pack of gray wolfs spotted near the border in the last two years. gray wolves haven't been seen in california since they were killed off in the 1920s. >> we have been talking about this story coming up for the entire morning. this is a chocolate fix like no other. there's a trend that knows how 250 get the job done.

caltrans wants to hear from you. it will be holding a public hearing this morning at 10:00 at its offices in san carlos and wants to get public comment on this proposal. they'll be talking about possibly raising fares. they're going to increase zone fares by 25 cents. that is the proposal. officials say they have a $10 million budget shortfall they need to address. some commuters say they worry about how that will add up for them. others tell us they are willing to do their share. >> 5 cents. i mean, the fares have gone up a couple times since i started riding the train. if it helps with the deficit, i guess. >> caltrain is also looking to get more money out of its parking lots. the proposed plan is to increase monthly parking fees by almost $30. this is a proposal, they are expected to vote on the plan next month. reporting live in san francisco, amy hollyfield, aby 7. >> thank you. >> in the east bay, the police

department needs your help identifying a robbery suspect. investigators released these surveillance photos of him. they say he violently beat a victim while robbing a gas station on the fourth of july. the suspect got away in a red or maroon dodge caravan with tinted windows. >> a san francisco lawmaker wants to make police body camera videos public in california. the assemblymen has written a bill to give the public access to everything recorded. police departments have generally considered the footage to be potential criminal evidence. they usually don't make those videos public outside of the courtroom unless it's a really high-profile case. the propezal is scheduled for the first hearing next week in the senate public safety committee. >> a federal judge has denied an effort to toss out a lawsuit in the denise huskins case. matthew muller pled guilty to a frar kidnapping charge. he held her hostage for two days

before letting her go. vallejo police initially called the crime a hoax. huskins and quinn say they were defamed and suffered emotionally as a result. they want the police department held accountable for its actions. muller is now serving a 40-year prison sentence. >> a volunteer for a small san francisco church remains in custody this morning. facing charges that he sexually assaulted two brothers. marvin helped at a small protestant evangelical church near petrero. the church pastor and members of the congregation appears in court yesterday in a show of support. prosecutors say he invited the brothers to stay at his home after issues. >> they stayed with him while they were going through hard times. and it's alleged at that location, he committed various sex acts upon them. >> he is accused of assaulting the 18 yeerth brothers after they used drugs and fell unconscious. he remains in jail on $750,000

bail. >> friends of the man facing involuntary manslaughter charges in oakland's ghost ship warehouse fire are demanding he be released from jail. harris and co-defendant eric almena will be back in court tomorrow. they face 36 counts. his attorney says harris is still struggling with the deaths. >> he was present for that and he'll always live with that night. and it's been very, very traumatizing for him. >> the fire broke out at a party that prosecutors say harris organized. almena operated the warehouse which was illegally converted into living spaces. >> happening today, san mateo county leaders will set up a safe exchange zone. several exchange zones already exist in the bay area for the public to safely conduct online

overall, san jose, we're looking pretty good. we had earlier trouble. you get into the downtown area, and i am seeing a backup on northbound 87. hearing about a new potential problem in that area. we'll take a closer look in a few. morgan hill, a little busier than we were earlier in the week, still, not terrible. on northbound 101, down to 21 miles per hour, and a quick check outside, 280 at 17. as mike mentioned, bright sunshine today. we have a nice spider web on our traffic camera. one day where you'll wand your sunglasses with you. >> that spider hard alt work and so are we. we have these numbers in. calls to san antonio's nonemergency number to report illegal fireworks more than doubled from last year. the san francisco examiner rorts the 311 line got more than 1100 calls between 7:00 p.m. and midnight on the fourth. police dispatchered say a lot of people complained illegal fireworks seemed to be a lot worse this year than in the past. >> at least 47 people died in

collisions in california through the independence day holiday. many of the victims were not wearing seat belts. officers made over 1200 dui arrests. 193 were in the golden gate division which covers our nine bay area counties. a newark teen faces a long recovery from an injury he suffered in a fireworks explosion. he and friends were setting off fireworks tuesday night. one device unexpectedly exploded. video from a neighbor shows the teen suffered burns to his body in addition to an injury to his hand. >> happening today, a big step in repairing the damaged spillway at the oroville dam. crews will begin installing the first new slabs of concrete. this will play a key role in developing the foundation to the repaired spillway. part of it failed in february as lake oroville swelled with water. sections of an emergency spillway eroded and forced evacuations.

6:41. taking action in the south bay. people who live in the neighborhood hit hard by flooding in san jose want someone to pay for their losses. >> they're pointing the finger at the city, the county, and the water district. janine is live in san jose with the details. >> hi, natasha. the water district here, they oversee flood control and somehow the system failed and now residents, they want to get compensated. residents from east williams street, olender and the rock springs neighborhood are filing claims against the city of san jose, santa clara county and the santa clara county water district. they're seeking recovery for property losses and pain and suffering caused by the flood in february. thousands of people were evacuated when their neighborhoods overflowed after the heavy rains. some of the residents lost everything and were displassed from their homes. there's a lot of finger pointing over who's to blame, that's why the resident have hired an attorney to help them with the process of trying to recover financially.

regulating it. >> sonoma county expects to generate close to $4 million in taxes from this new industry. >> in san francisco, police are searching for suspects in a shootout in the petrero hill neighborhood. police say the call came in just before noon when several people in two cars exchanged gunfire. this happened on connecticut between 25th and 26th streets. a 28-year-old man got hurt. he was taken to san francisco general hospital with nonlife threatening injuries. >> caltrans is revealing more about how they'll spend $52 billion generated by a new gas tax. starting november 1st, our gas will go up by 12 cents a gallon. they'll use $19 billion to improve 17,000 miles of state highways. that's about a third of our roads. 500 bridges, 55,000 culverts and 7700 traffic cameras and road sensors will be repaired or replaced. local counties and city will receive $31 billion to fund their own infrastructure projects. >> the american red cross is

making a plea for emergency blood donations. fewer people than expected have donated. blood and platelet donations are in critical need. there were 61,000 fewer donations across country in may and june. that's depleted the supply. the shortage typically worsens in summer because prospective donors are on vacation. we have a full list of sites on our website. >> governor brown will call for a global summit on climate change to be held in san francisco next year. he's going to announce it in germany. the san francisco summit will be aimed at coming up with ways to cut carbon emissions. the governor says even though the president wants to get out of the paris agreement on climate change, he doesn't speak for many americans. brown attended a clean energy summit in china last month as an unofficial representative of the u.s. >> are you sick of robocalls? california's attorney general is urging the fcc to change the

rules. they're considering new rules using use of technology. right now, fcc rules prevent phone companies from proactively blocking calls. that allows telemarketers to use fake numbers to trick you into picking up. under the new rules, carriers could screen out calls coming from unassigned phone numbers. that could prevent an estimated 2 billion unwanted calls every month. >> setback for steve scalise who is recovering from a gunshot wound. the louisiana congressman has been readmitted to a washington hospital's intensive care unit. he was critically wounded when a gunman opened fire on a baseball practice on june 14th. police killed the gunman. >> smartphones can really be used for almost anything, including tracking your health. experts say apps are revoluti revolutionizing health care. there are apps to manage diabetes to heart disease. they believe some day the apps will be able to predict and even

police. emergency crews were forced to drive through flying sparks and embers. police continued to drive through the inferno, looking for anyone left behind. the wildfires killed 14 people and caused more than a billion dollars in damage. >> t minus 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. >> you're looking at a success for spacex, the falcon-9 rocket launched a satellite into orbit after two delays. weather and then computer problems aborted launch attempts on sunday and then tuesday. >> there was no way a group of fishermen was going to reel this in. that's a whale shark off maryland's atlantic shore. it didn't stop them from being in awe of this massive creature. you're looking at video captured near ocean city late last month. the whale shark even rubbed against the boat before slowly vanishing into the night. they feed on plankton and pose virtually no risk to humans.
