>> that breaking news is in germany where president trump is just an hour from his first face-to-face meeting with russian president vladimir putin. over the last 24 hours, there have been violent protests over the g-20 summit. at least 76 police officers have been injured in clashes with protesters. this morning, police confronted protesters who refused orders to disperse. they have been kept far away from the summit under way now. speculation is running wild over what to expect when president trump and president putin meet. >> a distinctly different welcome for president trump in hamburg compared to the cheering crowds in warsaw. in his speech to the people of poland, the president calling out russia for its activity in syria and ukraine. >> we urge russia to seize its destabilizing activities in ukraine and elsewhere. and its support for hostile

regimes including syria and iran. >> instability in the region expected to be on the agenda today for the high-stakes sit-down between president trump and vladimir putin. >> president putin will walk in that door with a very specific agenda in mind, and president trump needs to be prepared to handle that. >> said to last about 35 minutes, an administration official telling abc news the meeting will only include a select few. the two presidents and their translators, the russian foreign minister and secretary of state rex tillerson. >> my question is do we see president trump who wants to be loved even by vladimir putin or the president trump who wants to be seen as a tough negotiator? >> a tough negotiator, but still not ready to lay the blame squarely on russia for the 2016 election hack. >> i think it was russia, and i think it could have been other people and other countries. >> president trump already tweeting about today's big meeting saying he looks forward to them, including the meeting with vladimir putin. abc news washington.

>> this morning, firefighters are still at the scene of two grass fires. the 1,000-acre winter fire is burning right now in yolo county near winters and then the peterson fire in solano county. sky 7 shows the intense flames shortly after the fire charged toward travis air force base. neighbors shot cell phone video of cypress trees smoking after they ignited around 4:00 p.m. one homeowner tried to put the flames out with a garden hose. >> we tried to control it with water, but it was already too high. >> we rolled up and the house was on fire. i'm like, what t the heck. that's crazy. thank god it didn't burn it down. >> gusty winds quickly pushed the fire across 40 acres, burning an abandoned building and a sports complex. flames spread to travis air force base where firefighters finally extinguished them. >> two neighborhoods under a mandatory evacuation order in

yolo county. this fire north of vacaville has grown to more than 1600 acres. the winters fire is burning just south of winters along highway 128 and pleasants valley road. it started yesterday afternoon. the fire is now 18% contained. highway 128 heading into napa is closed until noon today. >> this small grass fire in marin was one firefighters have battled in the last 24 hours. it started late yesterday afternoon near round hill road in tiburon. it scorched three acres before fire crews had it under control. several families were evacuated for a while as a precaution. this is a helicopter pg&e will be using to look for dead or tying trees near power lines. removing them removes the risk of wildfires. pg&e is making dead tree removal a priority this summer. >> the two men facing charges in the ghost ship fire are scheduled to be back in court. the plea hearing and bail motion are set at 9:00 a.m. for derick almena and max harris. they're charged with 36 counts

of involuntary manslaughter. one for each person killed in december's fire. the fire broke out at a party that harris organized. almena operated the warehouse. >> two popular hiking trails will be closed until tomorrow because of mountain lion sightings. they're off limits until rangers are sure it's absolutely safer. hikers took this video of the animal on wednesday. it's been seen several times near the trails. >> repetitive sightings in a confined space raises more concern. >> i'm not too surprised. their parks always have a lot of signage about the mountain lions. >> park rangers tell us the mountain lion is probably looking for food or has a deer carcass nearby. rangers say if you run into a mountain lion, keep away from it because it may feel corners if you approach it. >> a redesign for sales force

plaza is drawing criticism. the architect will now install light fixtures in the ground to create more space for pedestrians. a previous plan called for redwood trees for the plaza. the commission had approved a digital light display for the top floors of the tower. they compared the designs for the combination of lights to a carnival. >> let's start by taking a look at the bay bridge from south beach. we'll use this as the backdrop for our commute planner which has changed today. the small craft advisory is back north of the bay bridge through the delta. if you want to get on the water, a little choppy mass transit mild to hot, and on the roads, clear and dry. let's talk about those temperatures. some of our warmest ones on h h highway 4 as you would expect. pittsburg, antioch, and brentwood, 76, 73, and 73. we have low to mid 60s in the san ramon valley up towards concord. how about the east bay shore?

it's the second leading cancer killer in the u.s. but, it is almost entirely preventable. most colon cancers start as polyps. and screening finds polyps, so they can be removed, before they even turn into cancer. if you're over 50, get screened for colorectal cancer. screening saves lives. earthquake sends residents of the central philippines running frame their home overnight. a 6.5 quake killed five people and injured at least 72 more. the quake struck yesterday afternoon, knocking out power, making it impossible to pass many of the roads. rescuers pulled out 13 people trapped from a collapsed commercial building. the government has sent engineers and soldiers to the effected areas. >> a rash of car break-ins in san ramon, police are edigging into surveillance video to

identify the criminals. >> they logged 14 incidents in a single night. here's leslie brinkley with the details. >> the phones started ringing off the hook at the san ramon police department at dawn with people reporting their car had been broken into overnight. in all the cases, thieves shattered the side windows on the driver or passenger side and scoured seats and the glove box for valuables. in one instance, they found the key fob to another car and clicked it open. >> i know there was a vehicle stolen also, and that was subsequently recovered, i believe, in the oakland area. >> police say it's likely the criminals exited interstate 680 and zigzags through neighborhoods just west of the freeway, smashing car windows along these residential streets and in driveways. >> it's random. they may hit us yesterday, may hit pleasanton tomorrow. >> neighbors say there are frequently reports of car burglaries around here but did not want to go on camera.

many are sharing surveillance video with the police department in the hopes of identifying the suspects. in san ramon, i'm leslie brinkley, abc 7 news. in redwood city, police are turning to neighbors to stop auto burglaries. 9:00 p.m. routine. the campaign involves remembering to lock your car and remove valuables before going to bed. >> only takes thieves a few seconds to remove valuables from your unlocked vehicle. make sure you hide these vehicles or don't leave them in the car. always remember to lock your doors and take the keys with you. >> this video is from the police department. the 9:00 p.m. routine has been successful in other parts of the country. redwood city tells us they have already received a lot of feedback. >> novato police are asking for your help to find thieves who pumped fuel out of the school district's bus lot. a man and woman pumped more than 1200 gallons of diesel fuel wednesday night. a custodian saw them and snapped crucial photos.

one shows a hose hanging out of the truck as they were driving away. oficials say the pump the thieves used is professional grade and necessary to reach the large underground fueling tanks. >> we run the schools as efficiently as we can with the money we get from the state. and any little hit, i mean, that's $3,000 or $2,500. that's a chunk of dough. >> the custodian reported seeing a bald hispanic man of medium build and a woman with blond ponytail in the truck. >> justin herman plaza may be getting a new name. they hold an annual pillowcase, but in any case, it could be changed to maya angelou poet. the poet and first female rabl car conductor. so far, a petition to have her name on the plaza has collected more than 9,000 signatures. the woman behind the petition says she decided to launch it after learning that justin herman led efforts to demolish thousands of black owned homes in the district.

we have that petition on our website. i should note, justin herman plaza hosts lots of things besides the pillow fight. not sure why we're highlighting that. >> this has hosted football, soccer, and now golf is coming to levi's stadium. golfers can tee up inside the stadium. they set up a course yesterday. you can see in the video from sky 7, and here's video from the company called stadium links which transforms stadiums into nine-hole golf courses. tee boxes are set up high above the field, allowing the golfers a great vantage point. we have a link for you. >> how are we looking today? >> 87 in santa clara. that will be the hottest you get today. that will be around 2:30, 3:00. hot just about everywhere away from the coast in san francisco. here's a reason why. fog on the golden gate bridge, but it's not making much of a trip east. sunshine and our hottest afternoon. that's my first highlight. tonight will be our warmest night and fog back at the coast

once again. the extended, our highs will cool back to average. there you go. 87 in santa clara. 89 in san jose. look at those low to upper 90s. los gatos, 92. morgan hill, 97, and a sunny 77 in santa ruz. if you're on the peninsula, not bad, if you live around millbrae, 72 to 76. south of there, a little uncomfortable this afternoon. palo alto, 83. redwood city, 85. look at the temperatures along the coast in the upper 60s. mid to upper 60s today with just as much if not more sunshine than yesterday. 70 to 73 for downtown south san francisco. sausalito, 76. north 65. bodega bay, from the low to mid 90s in our valleys. head to the coast. 96 in santa rosa. 101 if you're heading to cloverdale. oakland, 78. a lot of low to mid 80s elsewhere along the east bay, and inland, just about everybody touching 100. san ramon, 99, the exception.

here's tonight. and you can see 60s to near 70 in the east bay valleys. a few 60s down the south bay. rest of us comfortable and cool in the 50s. my seven-day forecast, about 2 to 8 degrees cooler tomorrow. steady through sunday. a little more cloud cover at the coast. temperatures will drop a few degrees monday and back to average tuesday, wednesday, and thursday. >> if you're working this morning and you need to commute, our commute is off to a great start. in fact, so quiet, i'm going to talk about some overnight road work on state route 160. a resurfacing project kicked off last night between west sherman island and state route 12. during the week, the hours with lane closures will be 7:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., during friday and saturday nights, 8:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. a heads-up, you could see delays. a quick check outside. mike mentioned the fog on golden gate bridge. here it is. use caution as you cross into san francisco. no major issues there so far today. just a minor problem on the bay

bridge. an update on that just before 5:00. >> berkeley police now say an extreme case of vandalism is a hate crime. they hit last week, scrawling graffiti on fences and homes and slashing tires in a south berkeley neighborhood. there were 35 instances of damage on hillside avenue and nearby prospect street. some of that graffiti is racist and also expresses class hatred. berkeley detectives say that's a hate crime. >> that many is definitely unusual. not uncommon to see one or two, maybe in a week. but to see 35-plus instances in a six to eight-hour period, that's a significant amount. >> detectives are asking anyone in the area who has a security camera to check for any images of the vandals. >> buying or selling a house in california could get a little more expensive, but it will support a good cause. the state senate has approved and sent to the assembly a bill that would add a fee to real

estate transactions and would range between $75 to $225 for filing paperwork. it would help fund more affordable housing projects. the state could collect up to $300 million a year. >> fewer california undergrads were offering admission to the uc system. just 700,000 students were accepted. about two thirds were given to californians. the uc system has been criticized for not saving more spots for in-state students. the uc officials say they're still on track to meet their goal of adding 10,000 california students by the fall of 2018 at uc berkeley, more than 15,000 high school students were offered spots in the freshman class. that is up 7.5% compared to the previous year. >> 4:48. six luxury vehicles put to the crash test. the one thing that stopped tesla from getting a spot on the top safety list. >> a south bay soccer player is left in a coma after a near drowning at lake tahoe. the update on his condition this morning. he spent 28 years in law

tristruggled since transfers from a free service to a subscription based one. they'll lay off 40% of its staff. offices in san francisco and london will close. more than 170 jobs are going to be cut. >> after a whole lot of trouble, samsung's galaxy note 7 is making a comeback. starting today, the company is releasing a refurbished version in south korea. it has a new name, galaxy note fe for fan edition. they took the original off the market after samsung reported their devices catching on fire. it will come with an updated software program, a lower capacity battery, and right now, samsung does not plan to sell the phone outside of korea. >> a drone captured these amazing images of lava flowing from a volcano in hawaii. it's been erupting almost nonstop for the past 34 years. you're watching lava oozing down the hillside yesterday. the observatory says the floes

lower deck of the bridge. it sounds like a vehicle was limping around around treasure island. made it off to the shoulder and got an escort off. that's no longer a blocking situation and we're in the green and have friday light volumes so everything is looking great. a quick live look outside a the bay bridge. westbound filling in into san francisco and the lower deck, looking great. not seeing residual delays from that. i think we'll have lighter than average volumes not only because it's friday but also because a lot of folks are still out for the fourth of july holiday. we'll check drive times at 5:00. >> i want to show our viewers something that came across our sky camera. big flames coming out of a st oakland. at 24th and waverly. >> if you're familiar with this area, you know this is right across the way from the whole foods market in that area. it is north of the children's fairyland, and we're seeing huge flames from the camera. a lot of smoke in the yare as well. ow newsroom is making calls

trying to find out more about the situation. >> this is just a few blocks away from lake merritt. we don't know what the building is right now, but obviously, it is actively involved with flames. we have yet to see any fire equipment arrive there. at least from this shot. it may be possible they're on the ground and we're not able to see. you can see how close it is to other buildings and also how close it is to b.a.r.t. because one of the trains is actually going right by there. so we're going to continue watching this and let you know more information as soon as we get it. okay, moving on now. three large cars have received the top safety rating from the insurance institute for highway safety. the big surprise from this, tesla isn't on that list. this video from the institute shows crash tests on six large vehicles. the institute gave top latings to the lincoln continental, mercedes-benz e class and toyota avalon. the tesla model s received the best safety marks in all categories except one.
