5:01 am
>> the winds in the oakland area are fairly calm, as you can see the smoke is rising just about straight up, going vertical instead of horizontal. once it gets up to about 1300 feet, it will the southwest to the northeast as the winds are around 5 to 10 miles per hour up in the oakland hills and berkeley hills. in fact, you can see on live doppler 7 right there, calm conditions at the surface. let's take a look. there are those winds i talked about in the east bay hills. some smoke could make its way up to the northeast of that fire. all right, as far as your 12-hour day planner, 53 to 64. warmer away from san francisco this morning. the bottom line is the coast. those temperatures hit the 60s. the second line is the bay, and inland, 89 at noon. so warming fast there, to 95 at 4:00. 50s, 70s, and 80s still at 7:00. a little stuffy for some of us. let's get a check of the friday morning commute. >> want to head back to the fire. we have swung our emeryville

5:05 am
and they got pretty quick, so we tried to control it with water, but it was already too high. >> patrick lives next door. his car melted by the heat. the side of his house damaged by the flames. >> we rolled up and the house was on fire. i'm like, what the heck. that's crazy. just thank god it didn't burn it down. >> the wind carried it over the back yard fence of that house, and then it was off on its way to travis air force base. >> gusty winds drove the fire fast and furious across 40 acres, narrowly missing grazing cattle but burned an abandon building and a city sports complex. flames spread onto the base where air force firefighters took over. assisted by city crews. >> we cut through the fence in the air force base. i don't think anybody got shot. >> the fire threatened his horse stable. all the horses got out safely. two hours later, the fire was out. a cause still unknown. in solano county, abc 7 news.

tw other directors tell the chronicle they plan to look into the way the transit agency communicates about crime. >> happening this morning, hundreds of parents will be lining up in the south bay trying to get school supplies for their kids. >> sacred heart is expected to register 3300 children today. good morning. >> good morning, reggie. that's right. we're here in front of sacred heart community service, and people are already lined up. i spoke with one woman. she said she got here at 3:00 in the morning. they say they feel it's worth it because they know how expensive backpacks and school supplies are. so they have been waiting out here in the cold because registration doesn't start until 9:00 a.m. to talk about the need here in the silicon valley, we go to matt king, you're a spokesperson for sacred heart. can you tell me about the great need here? >> yes, good morning. we're going to have about 3300 kids coming through today to get registered for backpacks and school supplies. these are things that cost $60

to $90 per kid depending on how old they are, and what's really driving people here isn't just the need for school supplies. what's driving people here is they're getting hammered by rent, they're working at jobs they don't pay enough to pay their rent. they're going to schools that don't have the resources to provide these things so the schools ask the families to provide these materials for the kids. >> thank you so much. and if you would like to help donate, you can come down here to sacred heart at first and alma or go to our website at abc7news.com. reporting live from san jose, abc 7 news. >> thank you. happening today, tesla's first model 3 expected to roll off the assembly line in fremont. elon musk tweeted the model 3 passed all regulatory tests two weeks ahead of schedule. today's rollout is just one car, but musk says there will be a handover party for the first 30 customers on july 28th. by december, musk expects to deliver 20,000 cars per month. that's the real challenge.

we're back at 5:16. you're looking at live pictures of this massive fire in oakland. you can see this is a 24th at valdez street. the latest information from oakland fire is this is now a two-alarm fire. it would not surprise me if we saw that increase in the next few minutes. >> we first brought this to you before we got into our 5:00 a.m. hour. this is the second vantage point. you can see the camera shaking from the winds in the area right now. since we first brought this to you about 20 minutes ago, the flames have really exploded. you can see the shooting out of
5:17 am
what would presume is the roof, although we're hearing this is a building under construction. we're not sure how complight it was at the time. 24th and valdez. really hot fire, and putting up a whole lot of smoke in that area. we're just starting to see fire presence there, too. you can clearly see firefighters working on that. >> yes, and that we have only seen in the past 10 or 15 minutes. earlier, we didn't see any of the hoses affecting the fire. you can also see from this vantage point just how close this is to other buildings. now, it last time we checked in with alexis, she was telling us there was a slight delay on the b.a.r.t. system, but that was as far as we know not related to the fire, although this is not very far from the 19th street b.a.r.t. station. but so far, we haven't heard of any delays there. certainly, immediately around the building, i can only imagine that most of the streets are closed right now. >> this is north of lake merritt. if you're familiar with the area, this is close to west lake middle school, about a block away. the volkswagen of oakland is north of it, whole foods to the east of it. let's check in with mike nicco
5:18 am
now. we're seeing significant winds in the area that may be playing a role? >> the winds you're seeing are from where the camera is situated. when it zooms in like that, it exaggerates the wind speeds. if you notice that the clouds or the smoke is mainly just going straight up because of the surface winds. now, the winds are calm and environmental, but the winds will pick up around the fire as the air is accelerating upwards and to feed the fire, it will pull in, draw in, or if you will, suck in more air from around that. so the winds could be faster right around that because of that. i want to show you at least when we have a second, the winds at the surface are calm, but about 1400 feet, they're blowing out of the southwest at about 5 to 10 miles per hour. that means once the smoke reaches about 1,000 feet to 1400 feet, it will start moving to the northeast. that will start pushing it up into the east bay hills, places like piedmont, possibly over towards 24 and the caldecott
5:19 am
with thick smoke coming out there. the weather conditions are fairly ideal for the firefighters. it's about 57 degrees right now in oakland. the only thing that's lacking right there is the humidity is not all that high right now.83%. it could be higher. but this is about as humid as it gets this time of the year in the bay area. so pretty much ideal conditions with nearly calm surface conditions and temperatures in the upper 50s with a fairly high humidity for us. thankfully the winds aren't what they normally are this time of year or they would be blowing sharply to the east at 10 to 20 miles per hour. we don't have that setup today. >> thank you, mike. i should mention amy hollyfield is on the way to the fire to gather more information. we do know from our newsroom making calls that the address is 2425 valdez street. that's the closest address that we have. we are being told right now that people are being evacuated from the area. there are some businesses nearby and as you can see a number of
5:20 am
buildings including residential buildings. we don't know the number of people who are being evacuated but we do know evacuations are under way. as i mentioned a few minutes ago, this has now struck two alarms but it would not surprise me if we saw that number of alarms go up pretty rapidly here. >> already a significant response from oakland fire, and we're just hearing from our producer this has been upgraded to a four-alarm fire. there are a lot of dealerships in this area. in fajt, this address, 2425 valdez street, is right next to the oakland kia as well as a hertz rental dealership, a bunch of car rental, all centered in this area. alexis is monitoring any delays on public transit. what are you seeing? >> not seeing delays due to this. this is not too far from the 19th street b.a.r.t. station. a handful of blocks away. again, this fire is on the northwest corner of lake merritt. we did talk to b.a.r.t. we gave them a call as soon as we saw the structure fire break

out, and they said no, they're not seeing any delays due to the fire right now. there is a ten-minute delay system wide due to earlier track maintenance in the downtown oakland area. that was kind of the reasoning for why we thought maybe it had something to do with this fire. they said no, it doesn't have anything to do with that. we're staying on top of that. this is a look at surface streets in the area of 24th and valdez. you're seeing two pretty major roads there, that would be broadway and grand. this is on some smaller surface streets. i'm seeing just a little bit of a delay on southbound broadway there and then grand which goes east to west across the top of lake merritt. a little bit of a backup there on the westbound side. so maybe some onlooker delay. you'll see this from your vehicle. it's that large this morning. but just some smaller surface streets closed. and no mass transitt impacts as of right now, guys. >> thank you. and as you probably recall, we have seen a number of fires in oakland just over the past year, including several people who died in an oakland
5:22 am
transitional living building. and that was just at the end of march. so this is another fire in oakland, but this time, a building that is under construction. so at this point, we're hoping no one was inside or too close to this building when it caught fire earlier this morning. >> looking at more information about what 2425 valdez street is, it looks like it was a housing community under construction called the nook in the lake merritt district. the website said it was specifically created for people who wanted to live in a walkable urban environment, set for completion last year, and was leasing last year. looks like it was still under construction at the time, though. so really a residential building and fairly new one at that. >> you can see the massive response that is going on right now at this four-alarm fire. we'll continue to watch it. we'll also keep this live picture up for you on the side ♪ ♪ award winning interface.

we're back at 5:24. you're taking a look at just how big this fire has become. just in the past few minutes, since we have been away at commercial break. it seems as if it spread even more. this started as what we saw basically as just the first maybe the top floors that were now it looks like this is fully engulfed. >> that was in the last 30 minutes or so. this four-alarm fire. we're joined by an abc 7 news employee who is nearby at a b.a.r.t. station. what are you seeing? >> reporter: well, good morning, natasha and reggie. i'm about one mile north of the fire up at rock ridge b.a.r.t., which is above ground. i'm looking down to the southwest about a mile away, and i'm seeing as big a fire as i have seen in oakland this year. and i have covered both fires in emeryville and the one up on telegraph at the residential apartment. from here, i can see flames jumping. it's sending a huge column of
5:26 am
black smoke, as you can see on television. and then the smoke is starting to spread. but i can just see flames right down through my view, just standing here on the b.a.r.t. platform. since i have been standing here for the last ten minutes i have seen these flames get higher and higher. and just from my -- i'm standing up above on a b.a.r.t. platform, but these flames are easily, easily 50 to 60 feet in the air. and they just don't seem to be subsiding. so we're just seeing lots and lots of black smoke, which indicates that the fire is burning strongly, probably out of control. we're always waiting for white smoke when we cover these things. and it's just not going to happen for a while. as i stand here with people, the fire has gotten everyone's attention on the b.a.r.t. platform. everybody is just kind of standing here kind of

5:31 am
told that some neighbors have been evacuated from that immediate neighborhood. this is something that people are able to see from b.a.r.t. stations nearby. and they're just kind of staring at this. we were talking to one of our news managers who happens to be taking b.a.r.t. this morning. he's with a bunch of other passengers just looking at this because the flames and that very dark smoke are just billowing over this section of oakland this morning. >> absolutely. very visible from downtown oakland and north oakland as well. you can see just how much this has grown. we have been tracking this for 35 or 40 minutes now, and we have seen it go from just a few sort of licks of flame into this fully engulfed situation. you can clearly see the firefighters on both sides of your screen, the left and the right here, trying to put water and we're actually seeing, i believe, a crane moving on the top of your screen as well. burning very hot, sending a huge amount of smoke up right now. now, this, as far as we know, was a building under
5:32 am
construction, when you pull up this website, 2425 valdez, and i do apologize, that's the incret address on the screen, but 2425 valdez street, and this used to be a residential area, nook was supposed to be completed in july of 2016, that's the name of the apartment complex. it was supposed to have a roof deck, amenities, car sharing, et cetera. we're not sure if the microhousing units advertised if it was ever completed. you can see the building starting to crumble in the middle of the screen. >> i'm worried about the crane because obviously it's spinning just based on the fire at this point. and that crane is kind of going over the sides of the building. it appears to be longer than the building itself. so i would be worried if i were a firefighter working on the fire routh that that that crane could collapse at any second and potentially fall on the equipment or onto somebodies. >> you can see the fire ladder on the left side of the screen starting to pull back down.
5:33 am
in terms of where this is, this is north of lake merritt. this is right next to a bunch of dealerships and car rentals. so mitsubishi is right there, oakland kia literally adjacent to it, hertz is there. and also a block away from west lake middle school. >> i would not be anywhere near this if i were you. they are evacuating the immediate area, we're told. it does look like it's a lot of commercial businesses that are around there. most of those places would not be open to the public at this point. it's unclear to us how many residential units are immediately surrounding the area, but this is clearly a dangerous situation. amy hollyfield has now made it near the location. amy, what are you seeing from your vantage point? >> hi, reggie. a lot of what i want to tell you about is what i'm feeling. so much heat. hits your face right when you get here. we are keeping a safe distance. we're standing at 27th and harrison. watching this from afar because as you mentioned, that crane
5:34 am
looks scary. you can see it spinning from the heat of the fire and that is a huge concern along with obviously the fire that is burning here. in fact, we just saw some police tape seconds ago go up across the street from us. so it looks like they're trying to get a handle on the crowd because a lot of people are starting to gather here to take pictures and just to stare. a lot of disbelief at what is in front of them. you're right. we see a lot of commercial businesses in this area. i do not see a lot of residential homes, if any. i see one building in there that looks like it could possibly be a home or maybe it was a home converted to a building. tough to tell from this point. we see an acura dealership. across the street from the whole foods market on harrison street you may be familiar with. there's a 7-eleven on the corning and a lot of office buildings. the hope is that no people are threatened or people's homes. but just businesses at this point. we have been told that this was
5:35 am
a building that was under construction. so there is not an immediate fear that there are people that are impacted inside this building. we are watching, though, as firefighters seem to be keeping a distance. we don't see -- i don't see any water going onto this fire from where i'm standing. i don't see big ladders up. i just see this crane, a lot of black smoke, and huge flames. we could see this fire from as far away as the bay bridge, as we were crossing over from san francisco. could certainly see it from interstate 580, so this is a huge fire that if you're in the area, you're going to have a hard time missing it. we're also feeling soot and ashes falling on us, and even some sparks and some -- i am feeling some water. even from across the street. so this is a huge impact. far reaching impact from this fire. more fire trucks still arriving

i'm so happy that you are okay. which one is your house? >> it's the apartment over here on this side. >> so there's an apartment building, and it's on fire. >> yes, ma'am. >> we were under the impression it was a building under construction. but you're saying it has spread to homes. >> yes. >> oh, i'm so sorry. do you think everyone got out okay? >> absolutely. yeah. >> i'm so sorry. i'm so sorry. i know this cannot be easy. oh, my gosh. >> what was it? do you know what they were building? >> building apartments or something. an apartment like that. >> oh, my gosh. what's your name? >> my name is adam. >> adam. >> this is my wife. >> what is your last name? >> khamphou. >> how long have you lived here? >> six years. in this home? >> in this building. >> and what your name? >> nancy. >> what is it? >> nancy. >> i'm so sorry, nancy. i really am so sorry.
5:39 am
any pets? >> no, no. >> kids? >> no. >> okay. and you got out okay? >> yes. >> reggie and natasha, i'm going to send it back to you. >> i feel so sorry. >> i know. >> that's awful. >> it's important, the most important thing is they got out, but it's heartbreaking to hear that this has affected families in this way because as amy said, we thought it was just an apartment building under construction, which is what the majority of the flames, the center of what you're seeing but we're hearing for the first time because the couple happened to be standing there that it has also jumped to at least one residential complex. that's where that couple just escaped from. and they are saying that their place is a total loss. so that's frightening. and it sounds like from what they said that they believe their neighbors were able to get out. so that's at least a relief. but certainly it's a huge loss for these people. >> that is just heartbreaking.
5:40 am
and we're closely watching this fire. visible from this surrounding area from downtown oakland as well, and also closely watching this crane that continues to spin with the heat of this fire. i'm wondering if we can take a different vantage point. our emeryville camera from before. we can see on the left side of the screen, the firefighters are have retreated but they're still putting water on it from whatever vantage point is closest to us right now. but just how much this fire has grown in the last 45 minutes or so, we were just sort of seeing it start to begin, and you know, i'm having a hard time telling if that building on the far right, if that's just the reflection of the flames. i'm assuming that's just the reflection of the flames. >> i think so, yeah. >> but certainly, this is an area that has residential complexes close by. this has dealerships close by, businesses close by, which if they do not catch fire, will most likely be damaged just from the heat itself.
5:41 am
>> there's our first look from sky 7. now you have a better idea of what is surrounding this apartment complex, and amy can't see from where she is on the ground the water that's being shot at the building from a different angle, so that's why it doesn't appear from her side that they were actively fighting it from where she is. as you can see, there's only so much they can do at this point. the fire spread so quickly, and they have several ladder trucks on this, but it's really no match alt this point for what the fire is able to do. attached to a really large parking structure. i'm trying to find on the screen right now where this couple may have lived. and i'm not sure that we're seeing that. >> we are hearing from firefighters right now. they are concerned about this crane collapsing. and i mean, this is certainly something that we have been watching for the last 20 minutes or so. it's just been spinning in this heat. at one point, was spinning very fast. right now, seems to be
5:42 am
>> you see the crane that is spinning. what firefighters have done is it appears to me they have formed a perimeter that goes beyond where this crane is kind of over the building. so we saw a fire truck come down, and i'm assuming one of those ladder trucks came down because it was too close to the building. that crane is in peril of falling down. it could at any point, since it's spinning, fall on top of one of these fire trucks. it appears as if they made a perimeter to make it safe for them, but it makes it harder to put out this fire. >> for some perspective, cranes typically made out of steel will melt around 2500 degrees fahrenheit. it would have to burn very hot. but certainly, we have seen concerns about cranes in previous fires run actually just previously this year on the border, emeryville and oakland, there was a similar concern.
5:43 am
a construction site, and large concern that a crane would come down and potentially fall on homes. so we have seen situations like this before. >> in fact, in the past year, we saw at the emeryville/oakland border an apartment complex catch fire twice. and that apartment complex was under construction at the time. and then it was end of march, we saw another living unit catch fire. that one was occupied. that was, i believe, if i'm remembering this right, started by a candle. that ended up killing four people. we have seen a series of massive fires at living complexes throughout the past year in oakland. again, this one under construction. but as you heard amy say live on the air a few minutes ago, it has also spread to some living units that were occupied and people were able to get out, but it looks like their building may have been destroyed. >> we have a crew on the ground, a camera in the sky, two other cameras and a pirn at a b.a.r.t.

5:46. live pictures. while we were add commercial break, a portion of the building on fire in oakland collapsed. as you can see, firefighters are doing their best to keep these flames from spreading to other buildings, but we have already heard that it spread to at least one structure that did have people inside of it. as far as we know, those people were able to get out. but this is very early in us gathering information. you can see how close it is to other buildings. i don't know if that is the one that people were in at the time, but our amy hollyfield did speak to a couple. they said they had to get out of their apartment this morning as it caught fire.
5:47 am
they say their unit has now been destroyed. there's a section of the building now under construction that is about to topple. >> a great concern to firefighters right now is a crane that is near the center of this construction site. we have just been watching it for the last 25 minutes or so spinning with the heat of this fire. firefighters have confirmed they are concerned it might potentially collapse. you can see on the right side of your screen exactly where this is. valdez and 24th street. i actually think we have an update, an update, an address, street. a triangular parcel of land. you can see firefighters battling this even as the structure collapses, trying to put water on that structure to the left of your screen, which appears to be residences. and the crane coming in and out of your view every once in a while as well as we pan out, has been moving. you can see it right there as we pan out on sky 7.
5:48 am
the crane in the middle that has just been moving. the cab of that crane on fire. and firefighters concerned that it may warp and collapse. >> there are a lot of residential businesses in this area. in fact, just got a tweet from one of our viewers who said he was just about to go to his cross fit class there. and saw this happening. so obviously, he's not going to go there. they have evacuated a number of spots around this fire as a precaution. and you can see that perimeter is pretty wide around the building because of the danger of collapse. and obviously the firefighters don't want to put their crews in danger of having something fall on top of them. so they're having to fight this from a bit of a distance away. >> yeah, this area is north of lake merritt. it's by several car dealerships as well. right next to the oakland kia in that area. the acura just down the street. this is also just about two

blocks away from west lake middle school. there's a whole foods nearby. this is a dense area. and many people live close by, work close by. there are several grocery stores within walking distance. and this is certainly visible from, you know, far and wide. we're seeing from downtown oakland and north oakland reports that you can see just huge plumes of smoke and huge flames going up into the sky. >> this gives you a better vantage point because sky 7 has pulled out to show you in relation to merritt and where other landmarks are in oakland. you can see the pandora building is not very far from that as well. that doesn't appear to be in danger right now. you do see there are other other mid to high rises which are located just across the street from where the fire is. it appears as if firefighters have been able to keep it from jumping to too many other buildings, but if you look on the left-hand side, look how close the other buildings are to this structure on fire. that's a concern.

natasha with our fire coverage. >> this is the four alarm fire we have been following for quite a while. oh, you can see, there's another part and another part. large parts of the building are now collapsing. you can see oh, this is video this is video we're watching. you can see why they have created such a big perimeter around the building because there are areas that are collapsing. there's also a big crane that was constructing this building. and you can see at the very top of the screen, it is spinning around. and that is another concern if and when that crane may topple and hopefully it just topples into the building. >> this is a live picture from sky 7. you see the fire has spread to at least one surrounding building. it does look like a residential structure. we were hearing from a man and his wife earlier this morning, speaking to our crew on the ground, reporter amy hollyfield, and she was just distraught.
5:56 am
among the evacuated residents in the area, and she believes they have lost everything this morning. and you can clearly see on the bottom of your screen right there, smoke starting to come out of the roof of the building nearby. this was the structure that firefighters were frantically trying to put water on to keep the fire from spreading. unfortunately, it looks like it has jumped. >> you can see flames on the bottom left-hand of the screen above the breaking news banner there. this is the reason why they're evacuating residents earlier this morning and we're hoping all of these people were able to get out at this point. we don't know how many people were in the building where we spoke to a couple who was affected. they indicated to us they thought everybody got out. but they told us that their unit is now destroyed. you can see there's a large kind of area to the right of the parking lot where a lot of the fire trucks are now staged because that is about as safe as they can be. from the other side, they're not really hitting the fire at all. i think that's going to be too close to the building for them

to be safe. >> we also saw them reorganize when the crane was spinning with the heat of the fire. and they were concerned that it may collapse. for their own safety, perhaps, they also had to reorganize their structure. we saw them starting to pull down a fire ladder as they did announce they were concerned about crane. >> it's still early on so a lot of businesses wouldn't have been opened at the time of the fire, but you can see where there have been street closures nearby. this is obviously near other mid and high rise residences and also some big businesses that are located in the lake merritt area. >> we're bringing you live pictures from sky 7 and also pictures from sky 7 and also have a
