construction, the apartment that was under construction, but also spread to the buildings nearby. amy hollyfield is live near the scene. she has talked to people who were directly effected by the fire this morning. >> reggie, we are starting to hear stories from the people who do live around this building, although it looks like a heavily commercial area, wee learning there are some homes tucked around this area. some apartment buildings, some older homes. and we're hearing about how people escaped from this fire. look at this live picture that you can see, it's looking better. it looks like they're getting a handle on it. we're not seeing the intense huge amounts of flames that we have been watching over the past hour. that crane is barely spinning anymore. nothing like it was before. soy that is the good news that we can report here. but we do think that maybe some homes have been destroyed in this fire. we talked to one couple who says their apartment building has burned. the woman was very distraught. she was crying, saying she
6:01 am
believes her home is gone. they did get out okay, though, and they believe everyone else did as well. we also just interviewed a man who lives in an older building, he says, near this fire. and he had a neighbor running and knocking on doors and waking people up. he believes that that man saved lives this morning because he believes he would have stayed asleep, as would his roommate, and he worries maybe he wouldn't have woken up. he doesn't know the stater of his home. he's at a safe distance, letting firefighters do their work. he's just waiting, but he is feeling grateful that someone took control and thought of others while this fire was burning. we also talked to a woman who lives in alameda. she could see it from her home and instantly thought of her grandmother. she headed this way. her grandmother does live in a building near this fire. she did get evacuated and safely got out. we're hearing sad stories this morning, but stories of survival, of neighbors and
6:02 am
family members helping each other. and happy to report that this fire does look like it has subsided significantly. what we're told is that this was a building that was under construction. it looked like it was going to be a mixed use building, some business and residential. we're right next to the acura car dealership on harrison right across the street from the whole foods on harrison. that might be a locater you're familiar with in this area. there's a 7-eleven so a lot of commercial businesses. from where i am standing, it looks to me like this has always spread to a parking structure. i'm doing to leave that to you to confirm because you probably have a better vantage point from sky 7 and our emeryville camera, but this fire looks like it has jumped from its original building and caused some significant damage to the area. also worth mentioning is how we're all getting somewhat rained on by debris. it is just soot just falling from the sky. in fact, i happen to have on a
6:03 am
white jacket today, so steve, if you want to -- i can illustrate exactly for you what is happening out here to all of us. we have soot, just ashes all over us as it's raining down. a little bit of water too falling from the sky. falling out of this huge cloud of smoke. but from what we're hearing, it does sound like everyone did get out okay and firefighters are getting somewhat of a handle on the situation. reggie and natasha, back to you. >> that is a relief. amy, we appreciate your reporting. thank you so much. >> let's get over to meteorologist mike nicco. >> i have been checking the winds, and still at the surface, as you can see, it's calm. if you watch that fire, it's just a nice cylindrical plume of smoke going up. once it gets up to about 1,000 feet, it's running into what's called an inversion. that's where the air is warmer above and it's not letting it mix out. so what's happening is it's hitting about 1,000 feet and then the smoke is spreading just
6:04 am
about north, south, east, west or should say east and to a lesser extent west. so the smoke is going to stay up at about 1,000 feet. if it penetrates more than that, it's going to start heading up into the east bay hills as the winds are blowing from the southwest to the northeast at about 1400 feet. you'll see smoke all the way down to san leandro and possibly all the way up to richmond. now, the winds are going to stay really calm through the morning hours. they will pick up this afternoon, but the fire hopefully should be out or contained by then. other conditions i want to talk about for the firefighters, temperatures about 58 degrees. humidity is about 80%. so pretty ideal in that respect. you see i put a live doppler 7 in the lower right side of your screen there. you can see that the smoke is not nearly as thick and it's starting to turn white. you can see live doppler 7 hovering just below that canopy of thicker black smoke from earlier. we'll keep an eye on the air quality reports.
6:05 am
unfortunate lay, they lag behind by a couple hours from the bay area air quality management district. if i hear of anything, i'll be sure to tell you and i'll put it on social media if the air quality does get unhealthy in that area. we're going to turn it over to alexis with a look at traffic. >> yeah, and obviously, this is a busy area here. so i'm going to step out of the way. we'll go back live to sky 7. it does look like firefighters are starting to get a handle on this, and obviously, that is great news. we have a huge perimeter around this fire that is blocked off. so all these surface streets are going to be closed. this is near 24th, 27th, valdez, kind of that whole triangle there, you're not going to be able to get through this morning. i have been checking surface streets delays there. we have busy roads, too, so broadway, grand, harrison. i'm seeing pretty hefty delays this morning. so if you can just take a wide swing around this and avoid that area all together, that is definitely my best advice. i'm hearing from a lot of
6:06 am
viewers on social media. they have been seeing this from san leandro, from 880. obviously from 580, 980 is right there, 24, a lot of b.a.r.t. stations not too far away. it certainly could be a distraction for your commute this morning. we have no delays with b.a.r.t., and we did talk to them earlier. they said this is not impacting sufrbs for them today. back to you. >> thank you. >> we're being joined by sherry ann on the phone right now. she tweeted at me this morning. she's in san leandro about 12 or 13 miles away from the fire. good morning. what are you seeing? sherry ann, are you there? all right, it looks like we might be having technical difficulties. >> the point is she lives in san leandro and she can see this fire. that's how dark the smoke was, how massive the fire was, that it was emitting so much that you're able to see it from many miles away. as amy indicated just a few minutes ago, we are starting to see this calm down.
6:07 am
this was erupting and really high flames just a few minutes ago. now it looks as if the firefighters are gaining more control. >> sherry ann, our viewer in san leandro, looks like we have you on the phone. can you hear me? >> yes, i can. >> what are you seeing in san leandro? >> we're seeing like dark cloud of smoke. like really thick. and actually, now i'm on the road in oakland. and it looks like it has lightened up a bit. it's not as dark as it was initially. but my co-workers were on their way into work and they were saying from 980 you could just see flames, that they have never seen a fire that big. >> yeah, absolutely. i knowia tweeted me some photos. we appreciate it. before and all the way in san leandro, you could see the sky just black with smoke. >> yes. >> in that area. you could smell it as well? >> yes, you could. >> all right, sherry ann, we
6:08 am
certainly appreciate you calling in. thank you so much. it does absolutely illustrate just how far away people are able to see this. we had an abc 7 news employee at a nearby b.a.r.t. station covering fires in this area for a long time. certainly, this is the largest fire he has seen so far this year. we have seen several fires in the oakland and emeryville areas. you can see really live pictures from sky 7, firefighters attacking this from at least one, two, three, four, five, six, seven vantage points in the surrounding area, and really, what a burned out shell this is. we have been tracking this for about an hour and 15 minutes now, and so much of the fuel and this construction site has burned. >> as you can see, it is adjacent to a parking -- a large parking structure which has definitely been damaged as a result. you see there on your screen just how much of the debris has fallen from the building and why firefighters are so far away so that they could avoid that
6:09 am
debris falling on them or their equipment. and there also appears to be a car that has caught fire that i'm assuming happened to be parked on that street at the time. as we have heard, while this building was under construction, not yet occupied, there were units adjacent to this building that it appears were occupied. we don't know how many yet, but amy hollyfield talked to a couple. they say they have been affected. they were talking about people going door to door getting their neighbors out because, of course, many of them would have been asleep and would have probably not even heard anything was going on. >> we're going to keep tracking >> we're going to keep tracking this four-alarm fire burning in

6:12. we're continuing to watch this massive fire that has been burning in oakland near lake merri merritt. you can see firefighters have taken the blames down considerably. this has been burning for close to han our and a half now, as i'm estimate. that seems about right, right? >> about an hour and a half at this point. also closely watching the buildings to the left of your screen. residences that people have been evacuated from. a whole lot of people in this area watching closely and just

that breaking news from oakland near lake merritt where you can see the smoke from a massive fire has now turned to a curl that closer to white. that's what we have been waiting for all morning long as the firefighters have been able to get this fire down considerably. >> the shell of a construction site on 2403 valdez street. a triangular parcel of land. and firefighters still putting water to the buildings, the residences on the left of your screen. they were sending up flames and smoke about 15 minutes ago. >> on the left-hand side of the screen, you see the building that firefighters are hitting with the stream of water. it seems like they've done a pretty good job of keeping the fire which jumped over there under control. we haven't seen flames coming from the building yet. so we're hoping they're able to save that structure. >> the water damage, though, the damage from the heat, the damage from the flames and the smoke in this area, for the businesses and the people that live here, really tough to see. this is near the whole foods

north of lake merritt. we're joined by meteorologist mike nicco also tracking the conditions there. >> i was noticing that. as a layman, it looks like they quickly went from attacking the fire to trying to save what is around there. there will be water damage, but at least they didn't lose everything like they could have. let's talk about what is going on as far as the weather. we pulled up sutro tower. you can see right where the cap is, about 1,000 feet. smoke going up to that, it hits that wall, if you will, or that lid, and then it kind of spreads out. that's what we're seeing. if it gets above that, it will start heading more to the northeast. look for the entire east bay shoreline to be enveloped in a lot of smoke over the next hour or so. sunny and warm this afternoon. the inversion will break. the smoke will dissipate. after we get past about 9:00. still above average this weekend. even though not as hot as today,

that's one of our only slow spots. i want to touch on the fire in oakland once again. this is a pretty busy area on the northwest corner of lake merritt. we don't have mass transit delays. b.a.r.t. not impacted but i'm seeing pretty significant delays on grand, harrison, all those major streets around that area. you'll want to avoid that this morning. >> we have been talking to some of the people who live nearby this massive fire that is continuing to burn in oakland. >> we've been hearing stories of good people, neighbors and good samaritans who went house to house waking people up. we spoke to a man who lives nearby. >> so i was asleep. when i woke up, this one gentleman who was going around screaming, saying wake up, wake up. then nothing had gone wrong, but it helped us. it helped us prepare, get stuff out. otherwise, if he was not there, we were all asleep. my roommate was asleep. we wouldn't be able to, i don't know if it's not have been able to make it through that fire.

because i don't know whoever that gentleman was, he was going on screaming, saying, you know, there's a fire. there's a fire. which helped us. we could get a lot of our families out. because if one good shout like that, everybody could move. that helped us a lot. >> that was nice to hear. we also heard from some people earlier this morning who say their apartment was very much affected by the fire, and they are afraid they lost the entire unit. they were able to make it out without getting hurt. that's the good news for them. but obviously, they're going to face some struggles ahead. >> we'll keep monitoring this fire. a live look from our east bay hills camera. you can see the white smoke coming up from this construction site right now. that's a good sign. and a live look from sky 7 above. you can clearly see as the morning light hits that smoke, firefighters still very much attacking this from multiple sides and trying their best to protect the buildings and the residences. residences. and the busines

6:27 am
the top of the screen is the one we're talking about. they have managed to at least get that building safe this morning. >> if you woke up this morning and even if you were many miles away and looked out your window and saw a lot of smoke, this is where it was coming from. there was so much fire and so much smoke that people were able to see it since early this morning from quite a distance away. that gives you kind of an idea of what it looks like now. but you should have really seen it an hour ago. it was really quite incredible. fortunately, firefighters have been able to keep those flames from spreading to most of the structures in the area. i say most because we did talk to a couple. they say they were in their apartment this morning. they had to evacuate very quickly because the fire spread to their unit, and they say they may have lost everything. >> you can see the falling debris in the area as we were watching in the last few seconds more of the shell of the construction site continuing to crumble. our crew on the ground is monitoring this. you can see the debris, she's

we really appreciate the different vantage points. people in the passenger seat as they're driving into work this morning, could clearly see just the huge plume of black smoke when the flames were at their height. >> this in the middle of the screen is a perfect example of what i was talking about. just how huge this was. i mean, you know, driving down the highway and seeing that, it looks pretty scary. people have been saying that this morning because they didn't know what it was. and now that we know that it was a building under construction and so far we haven't heard of any injuries, crossing our fingers that that remains the case. >> people 13 miles south in san leandro could see the smoke in the air and smell the smoke. so largely affected. kwee can see the smoke as well from our sutro tower camera. really affecting people in the area. >> we appreciate your pictures and video. that's helping us to tell the story as it will help us throughout the day to share with people who weren't up early. you can see how close the b.a.r.t. station is. you see one of the trains going by at the bottom of the screen.
