>> announcer: live where you live, this is abc7 news. >> i guess they're cooling down and they'r cracking, and we have neighbors stuck inside their buildings. >> shattered glass means another frustrating night for residents near the scene of friday's construction fire. good evening. i'm eric thomas. it was the last way residents who live across from friday's inferno wanted to spent their sunday. shattering glass from an office building near the scene of friday's fire at this construction site in uptown oakland forced residents to shelter in place or leave their homes entirely. leslie brinkley is live at the corner of harrison and 23rd with the latest developments. >> reporter: eric, i was standing right here this afternoon, and you could hear in this block the crackling sound, the breaking glass falling off the glass panels on the side of an office building. across the street, this

apartment building, and that's where some people ended up getting, you could say, trapped. we hoisted a microphone up to the second floor apartment, the same way she got a pizza delivered tonight. she's stuck there. >> because the windows are falling out of the building next door, so i can't go out. >> reporter: the glass windows were spontaneously popping out nine to 15 stories up at this office building at 180 grand. just two days ago, that same facade of the building faced out toward the ferocious that destroyed a construction project here in oakland. the shattered glass rained down on sidewalks and cars and 23rd street. it was chaos for evacuees. >> i got out at about 5:00 friday morning, and i just got back into the apartment late last night, about 10:00. and now i can't go out. >> reporter: this couple came back to their still smoky

smelling unit today. >> as we stayed in the apartment and tried to clean up or have a plan for getting some cleaning materials, after about 20 minutes, my lungs started burning. >> reporter: they left to do laundry and now can't get back in. >> we find out from neighbors we couldn't go back because of glass shattering on the adjacent building. >> reporter: the barricading created still more challenges. this woman parked her car on 23rd street to go to the gym at 3:00. by 5:00, her vehicle was in the glass zone. she was stuck for several hours until a firefighter was able to drive it out for her. the barricades are expected to be up all night. in oakland, i'm leslie brinkley, abc7 news. to developing news tonight. 5,000 firefighters are working around the clock to contain more than a dozen wildfires burning across the state. take a look at this map. cal fire says 14 wildfires are burning tonight. fortunately none of them in the bay area. the largest fire is in san luis

obispo county. cal fire says the alamo fire has burned nearly 24,000 acres near highway 166. it's only 15% contained. in santa barbara county, firefighters are putting out a fire near lake ca kchumachuma. the whittier fair has burned 8,000 acres. a chance of rain couldn' help. moving north to butte county, where the wall fire has destroyed at least 17 buildings and injured four people. more than 1,000 firefighters are tackling this fire from the ground and in the air. early this morning, mill valley fire. it has burned more than 5,000 acres so far, cause under investigation. dozens of horses are safe from the wall fire tonight. that fire is heading north away from the equine rescue center in bangor. workers say all 78 horses were rescued. they evacuated the remaining

horses today. the center has a fire evacuation fund. we've posted a link on our website at abc7news.co keep up enaon the developments the wildfires on abc7's app. close to 290,000 gallons of water down the drain. drone view 7 was over the area where the north marin water district says it's dumping water after someone broke into a water tank and possibly contaminated it. abc7 news reporter melanie woodrow has our story from novato. >> reporter: just before 6:00 p.m. friday, the alarm system at a north marin water district tank did exactly what it was designed to do. >> we immediately went up to the tank and noticed that somebody had cut through the chain-link fence, cut into -- cut the lock that gains access to the stairs, and then also cut another lock on top of the tank that's the access hatch. >> reporter: general manager drew mcintyre says the tank,

which services 1,000 customers, was immediately taken offline. a backup tank is providing water to customers. from droneview 7, you can see there are two tanks near wild horse valley drive. mcintyre says he is not releasing the exact one that was broken into, to prevent copycat criminals. water tests didn't turn up any contaminants, but mcintyre says it's impossible to test for everything. >> our number one priority is to protect our customers' drinking water supply. so we made the decision then to go ahead and start draining the tank. >> who would want to contaminate water especially since we just got past a drought, and now all that water is wasted. >> reporter: residents are both relieved by the water district's fast response and frustrated. >> it's upsetting. i mean that's a lot of water that's wasted. >> reporter: mcintyre says it's approximately $1,000 worth of water, but the real cost is priceless. >> i'm very frustrated. it's a precious resource.

we don't take this decision lightly. >> reporter: while extremely rare, he says this is the second time in three years they've had a break-in. the marin koicounty sheriff's office is investigating. mcintyre says there is no surveillance video of the break-in. the water district is now re-evaluating its security measures. in novato, melanie woodrow, abc7 news. tonight, a 19-year-old man from oakland has died after drowning in the russian river. deputies say they got a call to steel head beach around 4:30 this afternoon about a man who disappeared in the river. the victim was last seen about 300 yards upstream from the beach. crews found his body half an hour later in the water. the sheriff's office said an autopsy will confirm the cause of death. police in san jose are looking for a woman accused of stabbing a man to death this morning. it happened on south second street just a block away from the 280 freeway. officers found the victim with at least one stab wound. he was taken to the hospital, where he died. another push this weekend to find a missing man in san mateo

county. the parents of richard moss traveled from their home in hawaii to california to lead four search parties. volunteers knocked on doors in montara asking neighbors if they've seen the 22-year-old man. his father, dan moss, says he needs help in expanding the search. >> imagine your kid's missing, and you don't even know what to do. and i don't think a lot of the people, not for any particular reason, were really helpful. i know what to do now, but i need something to get this to the next level. >> moss disappeared on may 25th. he was last seen driving on highway 1 through tom lantos tunnel. the trump administration is dealing with a new bombshell report tonight. donald trump jr. tonight confirmed that he went into a meeting expecting to receive information from a russian lawyer that could hurt hillary clinton. it happened shortly after his father was nominated for president. >> reporter: donald trump jr. says in a statement, i was asked to have an ameeting by an

acquaintance who i was told might have information helpful to the campaign. he agreed, asking trump's son-in-law, jared kushner, and former campaign manager paul manafort, to attend. the meeting took place at trump tower in june of 2016, two weeks after donald trump won the republican nomination. don jr. said he met a russian lawyer who stated that she had information that individuals connected to russia were supporting mrs. clinton. he says no details were provided, and when he realized her claims were just a pretext, he ended the meeting. president trump's outside legal team says the president did not attend the meeting and was not aware of it. meanwhile, the president is still getting questions about how he dealt with russian president vladimir putin last week. i strongly pressed president putin twice about russian meddling in our election, the president tweeted. he vehemently denied it. >> the president absolutely did not believe the denial of president putin. >> reporter: mr. trump says the two discussed working together against cyber threats, writing, putin and i discussed forming an impenetrable cybersecurity unit.

>> announcer: live where you live, this is abc7 news. good evening. i'm eric thomas. in tonight's headlines, barricades are expected to be up all night on oakland's grand avenue because of windows that are shattering from the effects of friday's inferno. that glass is raining down on the street from an office building. some windows are as high as 15 stories up. several residents can't get out, and many can't get in because of the glass after they were evacuated from friday's fire. drone view 7 shows two water tanks in novato, one of which may be contaminated. the north marin water district says it's dumping water, nearly 290,000 gallons, after someone broke into a water tank. tests did not show any contaminants but the water district would rather be safe than sorry. 5,000 firefighters are on the lines of 14 wildfires burning in california right now. the largest continues to be the alamo fire in san luis obispo county. cal fire says flames are burned nearly 24 how acres near highway 166. tonight, u.s. backed forces

in iraq are declaring victory over isis. the country's prime minister says the government has reclaimed the city of mosul. abc's ian parnell is in iraq with what's next for the civilian who's survived. >> reporter: there's been little reason to celebrate in iraq for so many years. but now a major victory against isis. soldiers and civilians took to the streets with the flag in hand, reclaiming the city from the militants, claiming mosul back in the name of iraq and its people. it's been a long, brutal fight, often to the death as troops battle on the ground and american and coalition planes bomb from the air. often the fighting has been house to house, street to street. and for the civilians of mosul, the people who didn't choose this war, this has been a desperate struggle to stay alive. homes, neighborhoods, and lives have been destroyed. they've been held as human shields, trapped in their open homes by isis. living under siege with barely enough food and water to survive. so this was an important moment.

the men who bravely led this battle, iraq's special forces planting the flag on the banks of the river tigress and hanging the black isis flag upside down, a symbol of their triumph over the militants. prime minister abadi traveled here today declaring victory and congratulating his fighters. the operation to retake mosul backed by the u.s. led coalition began in october. despite some small holdouts, most isis fighters have been killed or pushed out. this is just the latest defeat for the militants. now all guns point westward. krushly to raqqah and syria, the de facto capital for isis. there u.s. backed forces are already making headway against some militants. a long, hot, and violent summer lies ahead. ian parnell, abc news, in northern iraq. a colorado teenager hays a story to tell his grandchildren or anybody else for that matter of being bitten in the head by a black bear.

19-year-old dylan was attacked early this morning while sleeping at a like side. dylan showed off the claw marks on the side of his head then gave a matter of fact account of what happened. >> grabbed me like this and pulled me. then it bit the back of my head and drug me. the crunching noise, i guess, was the teeth strapicraping aga the skull as it dug in. >> you heard right. he said teeth scraping against the skull. dylan has nine staples in his head. he was dragged 12 feet before he managed to get free. the teen teaches wilderness survival at camp, and after surviving an early morning bear attack, there's no question about dylan's qualifications. police in oklahoma apparently believe in the sanctity of love, and they allowed a man they were arresting to propose to his girlfriend. brandon thompson was enjoying the fourth of july with his family when police got there. thompson was wanted on six outstanding felony warrants but he had a request. could he propose to his girlfriend before they hauled him away. police say okay, and they even took off his handcuffs so he could slip the ring on his

beloved's finger. next, taking your best shot no matter what. marine corps sergeant mike nick olson leading by example. >> reporter: for marine sergeant mike nicholson, summer is one of the toughest times of the year. >> summertime is generally a little rougher because that was the time we were deployed over in afghanistan. we lost a guy, and a lot of guys got hit. >> reporter: including mike. >> i got hit by a 40 pound ied in afghanistan. it took both legs and my left arm. >> reporter: his new body brought a lot of anger and depression. miej sa mike says he started drinking. but then katie came into his life. a friend set them up. they eventually married and started a family, and she had a challenge for him. what if he tried exercising again? >> i mean i'll give it a shot. you find out that you're going to be a lot happier in life. >> reporter: that was the start of his comeback, and this weekend he gave his all in the military's wounded warrior

a 16-year-old girl from san jose is in st. louis tonight getting ready for a week of competition in a major chess tournament much to the dismay of her competitors. abc7 news reporter jonathan bloom explains that she's a rising star and a pioneer. >> reporter: there's not much talking in this house once the chess board comes out. the pieces speak for themselves. >> once i start playing, i get more concentrated, and nothing else matters. >> reporter: do you have this ability to just tune out everything? >> yeah. >> reporter: it's that unbreakable concentration that's helped her amass a roomful of medals and trophies. >> even if i'm losing, i always fight back. so it's not over till it's like completely over. >> reporter: that's what happened two years ago at the u.s. jr. championship in st. louis. she came back from a loss to win the whole thing. this year she's invited to return. she's had two years to improve, but so has everyone else. >> who is your grudge match going to be against? >> all of them because we've all beat each other many times and

played a lot. >> reporter: she's practicing with her sister and at the club she founded with her father once she got old enough to need tougher opponents. >> sometimes i'd intentionally lose the game, but after that, i cannot beat her. >> reporter: but beyond winning tournaments and making her father proud, she's also doing something else in a sport that's steeped in centuries of tra dilgs. she's breaking down barriers. >> there's definitely more girls now. there was like only one or two girls that i saw at tournaments. >> and now? >> there's like six in the open section and many in the younger sections. >> reporter: and as she's grabbed headline as long with her trophies, her dad gives her credit. >> she's one of standouts in the nation. in fact, i can easily say they was kind of instrumental in bringing all other girls coming to this tournament to come up very fast. >> reporter: but to those players, her little sister has a warning. >> she doesn't give in that easily, so it's tougher to beat her. >> reporter: she would know.

>> what just happened there? >> i won. >> in san jose, jonathan bloom, abc7 news. >> everybody needs a little competition sometimes, even turtles. these guys do not feel the need, no need for speed. a small town in upstate new york held its annual turtle race yesterday. about 300 competitors this year. their owners cheered them on from the sidelines. the top three turtles in each round won a medal and some cash. turtle owners told us why they thought their pet would win. >> go! >> he can dart very fast, so there isn't a turtle here she can't beat. >> i'm going to touch his legs before he races, and it's going to make his legs move so that way he knows he's going to race, and he's going to run faster. >> they look pretty speedy to me. the turtle race is highly competitive, but pet owners agree in the end, it's all about -- go, dude. it's all about having fun. the race has been an annual tradition for over 40 years now.
