than 100 skateboarders and police officers outside a popular park. >> things turned ugly when officers some in riot gear responded to a large gathering of skaters. it happened at delores park. >> units tried to break up a large crowd and say people started throwing things at police. one officer was injured and taken to the hospital. units tried to block skaters on the street with their patrol cars. one person tried to skate around them and flipped over. at one point the officers let the crowd continue to skate. >> one skater was rushed to the hospital. watch this, he says that's jake phelps taking a nasty spill. the whole scene ended about two hours after police arrived. the other top story, the raging grass fire destroying

homes in san jose. >> that fire is near allen rock park which is now closed. leslie brinkley has more. >> reporter: san jose activated their emergency operations center here tonight and just a few minutes ago i got some good news. they said they are allowing evacuees back into their homes at this hour if they are escorted by police. this was a really bad fire. the thick smoke was visible throughout the south bay as this fire started near these homes in the sunset hills neighborhood around 4:30. the flames tore through houses and roared up the steep slope behind them. fire crews dropped water while the trucks raced up the hill. >> the extend of the fire was 100 acres and 40 homes that were affected. one home was burned down and

another was damaged and 11 were evacuated. >> smokey the dog smelled smoke according to his owner. they escaped as they saw flames consuming the house across the street. >> with the wind and the flames jumping and the eucalyptus trees, the dry grass, i mean it's scary. >> it's scary. i saw a whole slew of more fire trucks going up again. so you don't know if -- it may not be over. >> reporter: by 6:00 the flames advanced into allen rock park. by night fall the fire was 40% contained as croups zero-- crew on hot spots. a huge junk yard fire in the east bay. sky 7 was overhead after the flames broke out. you can see all the heavy smoke pouring into the sky. >> this happened at the alco

iron and metal company. that's where we find lisa amin gulezian live tonight. >> reporter: just a little while ago the shelter in place order was lifted but there is still an active scene taking place here. you can see the firefighters are still putting a lot of water on this yard and they have not been able to pinpoint exactly where the fire started. sky 7 was up above as thick, heavy, black smoke poured from the alco iron and metal company. the fire started before 5:00 this afternoon in one of the piles of scrap metal. >> the smoke was getting blacker and you can hear explosions of stuff that was in the pile or stuff that was burning. >> reporter: firefighters battled the blaze from a safe distance and managed to contain it but the issues continued. >> a large fire and making sure it remains under control.

to making sure those residents who live in the immediate area are safe which is why a shelter in place advisory was issued as a precaution. >> reporter: the precaution is because of this, huge plumes of smoke that spread across the sky. people reported seeing and smelling the smoke from as far away as hayward. bay area officials are testing the air. some have reported having headaches and feeling dizzy. this man was working right next door when the fire started. >> i started to getting a little headache and i got my mask. we left and it started getting worse. >> reporter: the cause of the fire is under investigation. lisa amin gulezian, abc 7 news. an intense day fighting fires. what can weather conditions -- kind of weather conditions can firefighters expect going forward? >> sandhya patel has the latest.

>> reporter: the humidity is coming up which should help the firefighters and the winds are lighter than compared to earlier today around those two fires that are burning. in fairfield gusting to 33 miles an hour. i want to show you the conditions near the fire in san jose. 60 degrees with the relative humidity that has come up considerably. hopefully the crews can make some progress. this is taking you back in time. you'll notice the smoke was getting picked up by our radar it was so intense. the fire danger will be increasing later on this week. we'll be back with a look at why coming up. a small grass fire that got close to homes in mountainview was doused by firefighters. an abc 7 news viewer posted this video on twitter. it burned off central expressway just before 3:00. no injuries and the cause is under investigation. a busy day for firefighters

in the bay area. a grass fire in richmond threatened several homes today. firefighters evacuated several homes. the backyard of at least one home did burn. all runways at sfo are open after the propeller of a coast guard plane clipped the tarmac. it was some kind of failure that happened when the plane was taxiing for takeoff. the runway was closed while the officials looked for damage and debris. could a man's job be the motivation for his murder? that's what sheriff's deputies are trying to figure out after someone killed a medical marijuana worker. the 19-year-old was shot to death outsideayward apartment saturday night. he looked at a legal medical marijuana delivery service. his mother says she is heart broken. >> made me so proud of him. he had so much love.

neighbors in a meeting about turning this plot of land into housing for the homeless. >> when you build them more will be coming. >> reporter: the director of housing says the city is considering building 20 to 25 tiny homes as well as bathroom and kitchen structures next year. all ten san jose council district must propose a new site for homeless communities. >> this is the only district that had one surplus site in their district. it's highly unusual. most of the other districts have multiple sites. >> how are they going to promise us the safety of our kids. >> reporter: john lives a block and a half from the park and has three kids under 6. >> the thought of having that project being built in my neighborhood really scares the -- scares me. >> i'm incredibly sensitive to the situation.

>> reporter: denise says the city should help the homeless but she worried about mother home value. >> we won't be able to sell our homes. >> reporter: the city will be considering leasing a different site and other community suggestions. more than 1 million customers in the east bay are paying more for their water. a push alert went out at 4:15 this afternoon after east bay mud officials approved the hike of 18%. rates are 9 1/4% higher than yesterday and will go up another 9% next summer. the average home will see the bills increase by more than $4 per month each of the next two years. >> it's an injustice for us to keep wanting to raise the rates. it's just not fair. >> east bay mud says the rate hike is needed due to a drop in revenue when people conserved

our south beach camera. this is the waning gibbous tonight. it's an incredible picture there as you take a look at a time lapse from east bay hills. the sun went down at 8:33 tonight. notice all the intense hues in that is all because of the smoke from the fires burning around the bay area. that's what added that color. the fire danger will be increasing. the temperatures will be in the upper 80s in livermore but it is this weekend we are concerned about even higher fire danger as the temperatures soar mid- to upper-90s and low 100s expected. well above the average of 88 degrees. as you check out a live picture right now, looking at a view that shows you patches of fog tonight. it's not widespread but as we head to tomorrow morning, you'll see more fog than on live doppler 7. the temperatures are ranging

from the 50s at the beaches and in the 70s in brent woodley. here's a live picture from our emeryville camera. pretty good visibility tonight from this vantage point. fog near the coast. mild to warm and triple digit heat by the weekend. if you are driving, watch out for areas of fog. it is going to be tough to see in parts of the bay area. light chop taking the ferry across the bay but it is going to be gray and cool start. good conditions to head off the work. 5:00 a.m. tomorrow the fog is hugging the san matteo and san francisco coastline. it will push in across parts of of the bay at 5:00 a.m. today's temperature inland were in the upper 80s. one or two 90s showing up. tomorrow we're going to do the same. temperatures in the morning, low 50s to mid-60s. fog confined to the coast and

work began today on an extreme makeover on a playground for deserving children. volunteers from abc 7 joined with our friends attica boom, lucasfilm and disney to begin work on a new playground for the center. and employees there are excited. >> it means a lot to me. i have been a part of the community center for about 17 years now and i'm excited. the labor, i wasn't ready for it, but you know, i'm here and excited. i'm going to give it my all. >> today was a prep day for the project and construction will begin on thursday. >> we took part in something
