courage award. and the midsummer classic, a late long ball giving the american league another win over the nl. those are some of our top stories on this wednesday, it is july 12th. from abc news, this is "world news now." >> good morning to you all. we begin this morning with the backlash over donald trump jr.'s e-mails that resulted in a controversial meeting with a russian lawyer. >> the president's eldest son posted the e-mail chain online. later saying he wanted to avoid the drip later from the new york times. the message show don jr. knowingly met with someone described as a russian lawyer as part of an effort to help his father. >> but he now says the meeting, well, he would have done things different. david wright has more. >> reporter: the president's eldest son put himself at the center of the story that's become a national political obsession. russian meddling in the 2016

election and possible collusion by trump associates. donald trump jr released a series of e-mails from june of last year. the sender dangles the prospect of juicy secrets, official documents and information that would incriminate hillary and her dealings with russia and would be very useful to your father, also cautioning this is obviously very high level and sensitive information but is part of russia and its government support from mr. trump. the president's son told fox news -- >> i can't help what someone sends me, i read it, responded accordingly, and if there's something interesting there, i think it's pretty common. >> reporter: the details reveal don junior leapt at the meeting. if it's what you say, i love it. he sent it to jared kushner and paul manafort and set up a meeting.

trump jr claimed kushner and manafort were unaware what the meeting was about. but the e-mails show they were told what he knew going in. >> in retrospect, i probably would have done things a little differently. again, this is before the russian mania, before they were building this up in the press. for me, it was opposition research, that had something maybe concrete evidence about stories i had heard about that had been reported for years. and i wanted to hear it out. really, it went nowhere. >> reporter: trump jr. says he's releasing the e-mails now because he has nothing to hide, in order to be totally transparent. but the "new york times" says he did so only after they told him they were getting ready to publish the e-mails themselves. june 9, 2016 at trump tower. trump jr., kushner and manafort all there. they met with this woman, an attorney named natalia, allegedly well-connected with the kremlin.

a familiar figure in washington, lobbying against russian sanctions. seen here at a congressional hearing last june days after that meeting with don jr in moscow, she denied she ever had any collusion. she says kushner left after a couple minutes and manafort spent the whole time on his phone. trump jr told fox in the end that meeting in trump tower turned up nothing of value. but trump's critics and inquisitors are unlikely to let them forget this. they now have a lot more questions. david wright, abc news, new york. >> and david, specifically legal questions being raised about trump jr's meeting with that russian lawyer. >> experts say he may have violated a key campaign law. according to abc chief dan abrams. >> it's not going to be the smoking gun for the larger investigation that robert

mueller is doing, but the question of, is this criminal with regard to donald trump jr., there's a strong argument to be made that this is a technical violation of campaign finance law. >> and trump jr's lawyer insists he did nothing wrong. sources tell abc news that special counsel bob mueller will examine that meeting. moving on now to a fight between passengers, forcing a southwest airlines jet to turn around. the flight from austin, texas, to chicago had just taken off when the disagreement started. the boeing 737 returned to austin where the two young men were removed from the plane. the argument was reportedly over who was sitting where. southwest does not assign seats. and it took six security guards to take an unruly passenger off a flight of qantas. the man was reportedly drunk and arguing with a crew member. he was handcuffed and carried off the plane, but first, all

the other passengers had to get off the plane. they had to wait three hours before returning to their seats, so you can understand the cheers that you hear there. and thousands of people turned out to pay respects to a new york city police officer shot and killed last week while sitting in her police vehicle. there was a sea of blue uniforms inside and outside the bronx church as family, friends and officers remembered officer familia. she was the mother of three. investigators say she was targeted because of her uniform. >> nothing i can say can bring your mom back. i'm sorry for that. but i can make you this promise. your mom didn't die in vain. >> some 25,000 officers from 85 different agencies attended the funeral. familia was shot by a man who had a history of mental illness and anger toward law enforcement. wisconsin authorities are trying to decide whether to charge a father for a fireworks mishap that left his daughter dead.

4-year-old alyssa outside of green bay was hit by shrapnel from a sparkler that police say her father put together. investigators say he was hit as well but his injuries were not serious. police are on a manhunt after a taxi driver was put in a head lock. video of the attack was just released yesterday. that person got away with cash and the driver's cell phone. luck luckily the driver is okay. los angeles will host one of the olympics. and so will paris. in 2024 and 2028. start planning. we just got to find out which one will go first. >> oh. >> so for the first time, the international olympic committee will name the host for those games in september. l.a. and paris were the only cities in the running. both have said they don't want to host in 2028. the ioc now says it's up to

than 51 years died after smoke filled their cabin. >> now because of a law passed nearly 100 years ago, the children are finding it all but impossible to hold the cruise line responsible. here's brian ross. >> reporter: the americans who boarded this amazon riverboat in south america were told it was a brand-new vessel built to exceed safety standards, and for the hammers of lincoln, nebraska, it was their ultimate adventure. >> they had worked for years and lived pretty frugally. they always looked forward to retirement where they would explore the world together. >> reporter: sometime after midnight, something went terribly wrong in the hammers' cabin on the first night of the cruise. in minutes, the entire hallway is filled with smoke. the rosenbergs said there were no fire alarms sounding. >> there were no alarms, no flashing lights. >> you couldn't see five inches in front of your face. >> reporter: again and again, crew members go to the hammers' cabin but don't try to go

inside. it would be 20 minutes and 47 seconds from the first sign of smoke until the crew will enter the cabin to rescue the hammers. it was too late. larry hammer died in the cabin from smoke inhalation, and the crew waited another six minutes to pull out kristy hammer to died en route to the hospital. >> getting on that boat cost them their lives. >> reporter: an investigation by the peruvian navy found the cause to be an overheated power strip provided by the cruise. and the fire alarm did not sound, to the disgust of the hammers' children. >> international expeditions did not put audible alarms in the cabins. >> reporter: a state-of-the-art boat. >> a state-of-the-art boat. >> reporter: but now as they try to take action against the company that chartered the boat, they fear they will hide behind a law called "death on the high seas" act. under the law if applied in

old at the time of the transplant in 2014. but this wasn't the first time her heart had failed her. you had your first heart transplant at age 25. >> i was in school and found had hard to walk to class. i went to the doctor and they found out i was in heart failure. the doctor said after the transplant, if i got an organ i would live ten years at best. >> reporter: she surpassed all odds by living with her first donor heart for 26 years, and now another three with her second donor heart. a walk down the hallway, just one day after surgery. >> we were at a gathering about a year after this heart transplant, and i looked over and saw amy dancing with, like, so much color in her face. it stopped me in my tracks, and i started to cry. we never could have imagined that she would feel that good, look that good and be the healthiest she'd been in her entire life. >> reporter: amy says of all of her hearts, this one is different. >> i was told that this young,

don junior said i probably would have done things a little differently. >> reporter: donald trump jr appearing late tuesday on fox's "hannity" maintains his controversial meeting last year with a russian lawyer with purported ties to the kremlin was much ado about nothing. >> it was such a nothing. there was nothing to tell. i wouldn't even have remembered it until you start scouring through the stuff. it was literally a wasted 20 minutes. >> reporter: though his e-mail exchange with rob goldstone and who has russian clients shows he was willing, even eager, to accept russian help with his father's campaign. >> someone sent me an e-mail. i can't help what someone sends me. i read it, responded accordingly. if there's something interesting there, i think it's pretty common. >> reporter: trump junior releasing e-mails leading up to that meeting. also attending, jared kushner and paul manafort. they didn't know what the meeting was about, but e-mails

have the subject line "russia/clinton, private and confidential". a june 3rd, 2016, goldstone wrote trump jr. that it is obviously very high level and sensitive information but is part of russia and its government support for mr. trump. less than 20 minutes later, he responded, thanks, rob, appreciate that. if it's what you say, i love it, especially later in the summer. he released the e-mails to be totally transparent, but the new york times says he only went public after they told him they were going to publish it. on capitol hill, the response was swift. >> this is moving into perjury and potentially treason. >> reporter: republicans weighing in too. >> his characteristic of the meeting has changed, which creates suspicion. >> reporter: and sarah huckabee sanders reading a short statement. >> my son is a high-quality person, and i applaud his transparency. >> reporter: chuck sievertson, abc news, new york. >> the attorney at the center of

this is also speaking out. she told reporters in moscow she never had compromising information on hillary clinton. and she's not interested in politics at all. she's a familiar figure in washington who lobbies against russian sanctions. the president is heading to paris where he'll celebrate bastille day with french president macron. the two leaders are at odds over climate change and the withdraw of the paris accord. they're hoping to find common ground on the fight against terrorism and defense. meanwhile, the white house says the president's state visit to london has been postponed until next year because of a scheduling conflict. senate republicans are intense pieing their efforts to push through health care reform, even postponing summer vacations. mitch mcconnell says he's

cutting the vacation in half, and accusing democrats of obstructionism and lack of cooperation. the wildfire has left its mark. the fast-moving grass fire destroyed at least two large homes in the hills of san jose. many high-end homes have been evacuated. in southern california, the jennings fire has destroyed at least 400 acres, forcing hundreds of evacuations and for a time closed an interstate. there are 55 fires in 15 states. investigators are trying to determine why a military plane crashed in mississippi, killing all 16 members on board. the victims included members of the he elite operations headed to arizona. steve osunsami has more. >> there's a plane crash on county road 286 near the county line. >> reporter: the large team of investigators are combing

through miles of mississippi soybean fields, recovering seat belts, engine parts and other melted pieces of the military cargo plane that crashed here monday. >> i heard a loud boom and it shook my house. >> reporter: this is what it looked like from a cell phone on the ground. witnesses say they could tell it was moving ammunition. >> all you could hear all the ammunition blowing up. >> reporter: 15 marines and one navy corpsman were killed. some from stuart air force and camp lejeune. heartbreaking calls are still going out to their families. investigators aren't sure what brought the plane down, but the large debris field suggests the plane was high in the sky. it was moving people and equipment from north carolina to california. the kc-130 aircraft has been a workhorse for decades. near the dusty fields, a salute to those who were lost.

this is difficult work for investigators who will be working trying to figure out what brought this plane spiraling out of the sky. we've watched them drive down long dusty roads of these farms and get out and search the soybean field by hand, looking for some piece of evidence to explain this. steve osunsami, mississippi. and we're getting a look at a milestone moment in the missile defense program. this video shows the first successful test of a system against an intermediate range rocket. the air force fired a missile near hawaii, intercepted by a rocket from alaska. the missile that was destroyed, similar to the ones being developed by north korea. at least five people are dead after a fiery wreck on an

interstate involving six vehicles, two of them tractor-trailers. one of the trucks rear ended a passenger vehicle and burst into flames and that spread to the second truck. i-70 was closed for a time both directions. and a massive air bag recall has been expanded. takata added 2.7 million vehicles to the initial order. some air bag inflaters may explode with too much force and send shrapnel onto drivers and passengers. at least 17 deaths have been blamed on the defect. it has affected ford, nissan and mazda vehicles. to detroit now with a different sort of story. an interesting scene in the suburb here. >> the 30th annual mud day in westland, michigan. a decidedly down and dirty event here. it involves thousands of kids and having a complete free-for-all in organized activities. >> many of them that were there came from neighboring communities and even other states. all of this to roll around in the mud.

the high winds snapped trees and knocked down power lines. the heavy rain brought widespread flooding in the rural area as creeks overflowed and many roads were closed. and there was also heavy rain and flooding in montgomery, alabama. this was near the state capital and flooding in the statehouse at the capitol. look at some of these images coming us to. there were high winds in montgomery with a tree snapped on the alabama capitol grounds. a person of interest in the disappearance of four in pennsylvania is no longer in custody. >> they are still focussing their search on a farm owned by cosmo dinardo's family. eva pilgrim is there. >> reporter: fbi investigators zeroing in on this field outside philadelphia, using a backhoe, digging and sifting soil by hand. appearing to measure and photograph what they're unearthing, searching for four young men missing since last week. >> i think that it's very important to hang onto hope

until there is no room left for it. >> reporter: the property owned by the family of 20 year old cosmo dinardo who authorities shay is a person of interest in the mysterious disappearance of those men, 19-year-old jimi patrick was last seen wednesday. >> he was on the shyer side. you get a smile out of him. >> reporter: tom meo, and mark sturgis and dean finocchiaro. all missing since friday. inardo missing since monday. >> what we're looking for is information that connects these four men to the that may connect them to the property we're searching, connect them to cosmo dinardo perhaps. >> reporter: authorities have confirmed they have brought in cadaver dogs. they need the tips to keep coming. eva pilgrim, bucks county, pennsylvania. >> and they have up to 50 people now taking part in the search effort, but investigators haven't revealed if they've found any physical evidence. >> or what the connection is

the only problem with pancake day was it only happened on sundays. so today we're going to make a pancake healthy enough to eat any day of the week. it's pancake day, baby! we're going to start off by grabbing eggs. we'll need four egg whites for this recipe. we're starting with the eggs, because separating eggs by far is the most annoying part of this whole recipe, but we're going to make it less annoying with this high tech gadget. yes, that's a water bottle. open the water bottle. crack in your eggs. try not to drop in the shell. you're going to take the water bottle. till the bowl a little bit. squeeze and suck the yolk right in. boom, from there, grab the blender.

add your egg whites and any banana will do, and this is a good use for an overripe banana like this one. half a cup of oatmeal. half a teaspoon of baking powder or go one teaspoon. and finally, here's a fun cheat. for a little added sweetness, two teaspoons of protein powder. i'm using vanilla, but i'm sure chocolate would be delicious too. and then we blend. loudest blender. ♪ voila. we've got pancake batter. and here's a good make ahead tip. can you put the batter in the fridge and make the pancakes in the next day or two. it will settle a little, but add a little milk. but i don't want to wait a day or two. get your pan going with a little grease.

because we're using so little, i'm going with butter. what we're looking for is these bubbles to form. once you start seeing the bubbles, it usually means the pancakes are ready to flip. voila. pancakes. the best part is, for a regular pancake, you're looking at about 160 calories, five grams of fat, more than 20 grams of carbs and four grams of sugar. our pancake has 67 calories. just a little over one gram of fat, 11 grams of carbs and half a gram of sugar, which means -- there's even room for a little bit of syrup. ♪ ooh, one more tip for you. if you end up with a big batch, you can just freeze the leftovers, if you have any.

>> did you tell your father anything about this? >> no. it was such a nothing. there was nothing to tell. i wouldn't even have remembered it until you start scouring through the stuff. it was literally just a wasted 20 minutes, which was a shame. >> and don jr says he's more than happy to cooperate with er. e released the e-mails, though, after the "new york times" told him they were about to publish them. >> and we're also learning more about that russian lawyer who met with the president's son. >> yeah, she said she arrived at trump tower with an interpreter but insists she had no information on hillary clinton. brian ross has more on the attorney and what the president may have known. >> reporter: the big question is what did the president know about the meeting here at trump tower, and when did he know it? the white house says he only became aware of it a few days ago. but we now know more about the russian lawyer, natalia, well-connected to the kremlin and a familiar figure in washington, lobbying. against russian sanctions. here she is at a congressional

hearing last june. she flew in to meet with trump's inner circle on the 25th floor. one floor below the office of donald trump sr. democrats in congress are asking how could he not know what what is going on. especially since the meeting was set up by people working for a billionaire who was the former business partner of trump's and close to vladimir putin. the lawyer denied her purpose was to provide compromising information on hillary clinton. no, this is not true, she said. further claiming she didn't even know if donald trump was a candidate for president then. she says presidential son-in-law, jared kushner left the meeting after only about ten minutes and that campaign chairman paul manafort spent most of the time looking at his phone. she insists the campaign was not on her mind, telling reporters, i'm not interested in politics. she said she came primarily to talk about the adoption of russian children.

and that was donald junior's explanation at first, too. then he did quickly change the story saying that she did tell him she had information about hillary clinton. and with the e-mails another version of what was on the agenda here at trump tower, brian ross, abc news, new york. >> and sources tell abc news, special counselor robert mueller will look into the meeting as part of his widening investigation into possible trump collusion. >> some are calling it proof of collusion and even possible treason. and lawmakers on both sides of the aisle say they have serious concerns. >> donald trump jr was openly salivating about the prospect of getting damaging information from the russians. is certainly evidence of collusion. >> you're offered assistance from a foreign government in your campaign, the only answer is no. so i'm not going to condemn the gal in an e-mail, but this is something that is the most problematic thing i've seen thus far. >> is that evidence that the trump campaign then knew that

russia was trying to interfere? >> no, i don't think so. no. >> that's senior republican senator from oklahoma there, defending the president's son. democrats and some republicans say trump junior should testify on capitol hill. senator dianne feinstein says that he should do it in an open session as soon as possible. a doctor who cared for collegiate and olympic gymnasts has pleaded guilty to child pornography charges. larry nassar could face up to 60 years in prison. he worked for usa gymnastics and michigan state university. he faces lawsuits for the sexual abuse of more than 100 women and girls. the accusers include u.s. olympians. investigators are looking into farm fields in mississippi for clues as to what caused that crash. the marine corps air tanker, the kc-130 plane, was taking an elite special operations unit across the country for training.

all 16 on board were killed, making it the deadliest marine corps crash in years. foul play is not suspected. the widespread debris indicates something went wrong in the middle of the air. >> it is a cargo airplane. sometimes cargo airplanes can pick up dangerous cargos. we've seen that bring down airplanes in the past, whether that's lithium ion batteries or cargo that shifts. so they can be put in danger by something they're carrying. maybe something like that happened while they were at altitude. but as of right now, it's inexplicable. >> members of the special ops unit were based at camp lejeune in north carolina. the other nine were based at stuart air force base in new york. >> aviation officials are looking into what could have been a disaster in san francisco. an air canada jet nearly landed on a taxiway where four other planes were waiting to take off. it missed them by about 100 feet. here's david kerley. >> reporter: disaster averted on this runway, an air canada pilot confused on a night approach.

>> we see lights on the runway there. >> confirmed, clear to land. >> reporter: what the pilot of the a-320 was actually seeing was four other jets, potentially carrying up to 1,000 people on the taxiway, running parallel to the runway. a pilot on the ground sounding the alarm. >> where's this guy going? he's on the taxiway. >> reporter: less than ten seconds later, the pilot told to abort the landing. data from a flight tracking service. shows the air canada jet was just 400 feet off the ground, a bit more than a football field length. aviation experts say this is an extremely concerning incident. the faa's investigating and says it will determine how close the landing jet got to those on the taxiway. david kerley, abc news, reagan national airport. there are dozens of wildfires, but two of the most

active are in california. the jennings fire was started yesterday afternoon by a vehicle's exhaust. it grew quickly hundreds of acres, forcing evacuations and even the closure of interstate 8 there. another fire near san jose has already destroyed two homes. this is the view as a husband and wife escaped a wildfire in western canada. it began in heavy smoke and turned really frightening as their car was surrounded by flames. >> british columbia has been under a state of emergency since friday. more than 200 fires have burned more than 150 square miles and forced 14,000 evacuations. major league baseball's all-star game doesn't count anymore. but it still has drama. >> the best met in miami, seattle's robinson cano broke a tie with a solo homer off the cubs' wade davis. he picked up the mvp and the victory.
