and nine businesses are gone, including the chamber of commerce. amy hollyfield is on lafayette circle near mt. diablo road. amy? >> reporter: reggie, firefighters took a look at that droneview7 video that they got because they need to look in there. they still don't know the cause. they are interviewing witnesses, and they are looking at burn patterns but they are looking from out here. they can't go inside. they are too worried that that building is going to collapse. what they do know is that people's businesses are gone. >> the owners of an italian restaurant in lafayette needed comfort as they faced the damage from last night's huge fire t.destroyed a total of nine businesses, including the chamber of commerce and a skin care salon. the salon owner was also heartbroken. >> it's my livelihood, and just got to move on and find somewhere else, but it's an amazing building. >> reporter: firefighters got the call just before midnight. they say you could see it from pittsburgh, 15 miles away. at one point they had to call

east bay mud and ask that they increase the water pressure. 92,000 to 12,000 gallons of water they were easing per minute was depleting the system. >> and i saw nothing but flames through my window. >> reporter: jordan lockwood was asleep in her apartment next door when she heard explosions and saw the fire. firefighters say that was likely the sound of bursting propane tanks. >> it was a huge boom, like either a gunshot or a bomb. >> so they had outdoor heaters with propane tanks. one of them did actually let loose while we were here on scene. >> reporter: this view from joanview7 is as close as investigators can get to the scene. the building is still too unstable for them to go inside. they estimate the fire did about $1.1 million worth of damage. the businesses may be gone, but loyal customers are still here. many stopped by to see the aftermath and share their memories. >> it was wonderful. it was just like an old-fashioned italian restaurant. everyone was nice, really cute inside, delicious food. >> gone. >> it's sad. it's really sad.

>> reporter: they did keep it from spreading to any other buildings. all the homes around here are okay. no one was hurt. they are hoping to get to go in today. they are working on a plan right now. the busy lafayette circle right here will be closed throughout the day, maybe even longer. live in lafayette, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> amazing how fast that fire seems to have spread. thanks, amy. this isn't the first time the shopping center has been hit by disaster. in january a huge eucalyptus tree filling in that parking lot. seven cars got crushed outside that italian restaurant and people living nearby said the tree was about 85 years old. >> volunteers are searching for the man who went missing along the san mateo coastline nearly two months ago. richard moss was last seen on may 25th. he was on his way to work, made a stop at mcdonald's. drove through devil's slide tunnel and then vanished. a woman found his aaa card at the state beach where volunteers

and divers are out searching right now. they are hoping to find any clueses that could lead to moss' whereabouts. new this morning, a big mess and traffic backup in napa county after a postal truck flipped on its side, and can you just guess what happened to all that mail. it happened around 4:30 this morning on northbound state route 29 at tower road. the chp says the driver suffered minor injuries. workers with the u.s. postal surface quickly showed up to see all those packages. >> it looks like there's some sorts of packages, and there are employees here unloading trailer and getting it ready to upright. >> the truck has since been towed away. the problem now, a traffic light. the truck took out a power pole in the crash. pg&e crews are still out there trying to fix it, so you want to avoid that area, if you can. >> santa cruz officials are renewing a warnings warning to diehard surfers. you could get fined if you don't get out of the water. the city imposed a ban in the area where a great white shark attacked a kayak earlier this

week. abc 7 news is live in santa cruz with that and the impact on businesses. >> reporter: surfers are out here at their own risk. these surfers are not allowed in the water, but they don't care. plenty of surfers hit the waves this morning, pretty close to the same spot where a shark took a bite out of a kayak earlier this week. is it in the back of your mind though while you're out there? >> nah. i'm just really cold. my toes are cold. that's really all i'm thinking about. >> reporter: surfers are ignoring the ban the city put into effect on tuesday. no one is allowed in the water within a mile of steamer's lane, including the main beach and cowell's beach. sharks have always been in the water and fear is not a factor. some came as early as 5:00 a.m. >> if you're always focused on that, you're going to spend a lot of time on your couch finding reasons not to do what you love to do. but i don't think either of us is doing anything except honoring the animals in there, the grizzly bears of the sea,

and i'm not seeing any dorsal fins. >> reporter: some tourists are staying away. there's less customers and cowell's surf shop said business was down 30% yesterday and at nearby restaurants employees are noticing a downturn. >> it's been increased by a half and now that we're going into the weekend it may pick up but may not. >> reporter: some tourists came into town not knowing they weren't allowed into the water until they saw the warning signs. >> it scared me a little bit but after i went in the water. >> reporter: you just dipped your feet in or what? >> yeah, pretty much. >> reporter: anyone violating the ban risks getting a $200 fine. the ban is in effect until saturday morning, so businesses should start seeing relief by then. >> janine, thank you. former u.s. president jimmy carter collapsed while at a habitat for humanity building in canada. the 92-year-old received medical

treatment at the zone and was treated for dehydration and taken to the hospital. the former president encouraged everyone to stay hydrated and keep on building. he announced in 2015 that he was free of a melanoma that spread in his brain. president trump is overseas in france celebrating bastille day with french president emmanuel macron. the president took questions from the media for the first time since his done donald junior released e-mails about a meeting with a russian lawyer during the campaign. in those e-mails don junior responded to a question about russian dirt on hillary clinton but saying that he would love it. the president defended his son today. >> my son is a wonderful young man. he took a meeting with a russian lawyer, not a government lawyer but a russian lawyer. most people would have taken that meeting. it's called opposition research. >> at the news conference the president was asked about his decision to pull out of the paris climate accord.

he said, quote, something could happen, but he didn't give any more details. >> new this morning, republican lawmakers have unveiled the revised bill to repeal the obama administration's affordable care act. republicans say the revised bill will provide roughly $70 billion for states to spend to reduce health care premiums. it the would also allow insurers to offer health plans that don't meet the current standards of the affordable care act. senate majority leader mitch mcconnell has delayed the senate's august recess by two weeks to try to pass a bill. president trump said he would be, quote, very angry if the senate fails. happening now, members of the walt disney company including some of our own at abc 7 are lending a helping hand to build a new playground in san francisco. >> work is underway at the booker t. washington community center. meteorologist mike nicco is there live. hey, mike. >> reporter: things moving at

new developments in a gruesome case out of a suburb in philadelphia where four young men have gone missing. they have found the remains of at least one victim buried in a common grave. they have identified him as dean finocchiaro. investigators have been looking for the 19-year-old along with thomas meo, mark sturgess and ad jimmy tarpatrick. >> they are down 12 foot deep in a hole that's getting deeper by the minute. >> the property owner's son is a person of interest. cosmo dinardo was first arrested on an unrelated gun charge but

when they posted bail they re-arrested him. they say he tried to sell a car belonging to one of the missing men. he's now being held on a $5 million all cash bail. >> a revolutionary new technique to fight cancer. the first gene therapy in the u.s. is being developed. jessica castro from abc 7 news morning has what could be a game-changer. >> reporter: the new method was unanimously approved by the fda's advisory panel and get this, it would eliminate chemotherapy. a potential brewing in treating cancer that doesn't involve chemotherapy. an fda panel is recommending the approval of the first gene therapy available in the u.s. >> this is personalized targeted therapy. >> reporter: new technique involves taking t-cells out of the patient's own body. those are then genetically engineered and placed back into the body. the new cells then target and destroy the malignant cells in a trojan horse type method without

we've been telling you about the special project under way in san francisco. nbc news staffers are part of an effort to build a new playground. >> looks like they are making good progress. mike is out there at the booker t. washington community center. how is it going, mike? >> reporter: oh, my gosh, it's so busy out here. look at all these people walking right behind me. that's how they are moving concrete right now and trying to pour these footings for this new playground they are putting at the booker t. washington community service center here in the western addition of san

francisco. i want to bring in blair chaput in here. you have more than 80 people here from lucas film. why pick the western addition, why this area? >> it's really meaningful for us. kaboom put us in touch with the booker t. washington center and we liked what they stood for and in our corporate offices for lucas film about a mile down the road. we have a lot of employees in this neighborhood, have grown up in this neighborhood and wanted to do something meaningful to give back to this community. >> reporter: you've had people that utilized this area that now work for lucas film? >> exactly. we have a lot of different divisions represented from disney to disney stores and to abc and lucas film and all different disciplines. we have artists that are drawing and creating beautiful murals to accountants that are pouring concrete so everybody is getting their hands dirty today. >> what you're saying is construction work was there to help the community. >> everything was leaning in there to do something amazing.

we're socked in with the fog. do not worry. some peaks of afternoon sunshine out there. 74 in santa cruz and 61 in bodega bay. we've got beach hazard statements along the coastline and take it easy in the ocean water. here's the call. high cirrus clouds are moving in across the region and mainly 50s from the coast to the bay and inland and that will set the stage for a warmup starting on friday. future tracker temperatures to get you into friday. the numbers start to get warm inland. pretty comfortable around the bay in the 60s and 70s and watch what happens on saturday. we are hot in spots, near triple digits inland. we go into the 70s and 80s around the bay and even hotter than that on sunday. we're calling it warm to hot out there so the weekend will feature temperatures well above normal for this time of the year. accuweather forecast. decreasing clouds out there right now. tomorrow it's hazy sun and the heat is here on saturday. even on sunday it's hot inland and then cooling will begin and it will continue monday, tuesday and into wednesday.
