good morning on this july 14th. friday is the most important part of that sentence. 5:00 in the morning. >> thanks for waking up with us. we have everyone here. good morning. alexis smith and mike nicco giving us some weather this weekend. >> got a little fog right now. that won't be the case over the weekend as it's going to get hot in many neighborhoods. you can see the fog mainly along the coast. it is spilling into some of our lower elevations. but it's going to go away faster than yesterday. you can see it trying to swallow the bay bridge on our south camera there. here's your 12-hour day planner. temperatures this morning, 7:00, in the mid to upper 50s. that bottom line is the coast. we're going tosty in the 50s for the most part. 72 to 77 around the bay. and that top line, 83 to 90 with

everybody back mainly in the 50s, 60s, and 70s by 7:00. we'll talk more about that heat coming up. how about the commute this morning? >> we have one hot spot in the east bay. overnight road work on southbound 880 and all traffic is forced off at 23rd avenue just briefly and then you get right back on southbound 880, but boy, pretty decent backup if you're heading through in the early morning hours. you want to take 580 instead. cruising along at 64 miles per hour. down to 2 miles per hour approaching the construction closure. we're supposed to get a couple lanes open at 5:00 a.m. we'll take a look at drive times coming up in less than ten. >> thank you. protests are expected today as two oakland police officers who reportedly mishandled the department's sexual misconduct case are set to be honored. a report ordered by the department's federal court monitor found opd's investigation of its own officers to be wholly inadequate. according to the east bay express. ronald holmgren and john lewis were two of the top brass involved in the mishandling of the investigation involving a teenager named jasmine abuslin.

new oakland police chief ann kirkpatrick named them to her command staff, effective july 1st. >> the man convicted of the massacre at oakland's oikos university is set to be sentenced today. he entered a no contest plea in may and was found guilty of seven counts of murder with special circumstances and three counts of attempted premeditated murder. in april of 2012, he went to his former school, shot and killed seven people. he'll be sentenced to seven consecutive terms of life in prison without the possibility of parole. plus another 271 years to life in prison. >> now, to that air canada close call at sfo. we're hearing the pilots made the decision to go around the airport and attempt a new landing before the sfo tower ordered them to do so. it happened on friday night as the flight from toronto was trying to land here in the bay area. the pilot mistook the taxiway for the runway and came as close as 100 feet from two other jetliners. that's according to the full preliminary report from the canadian transportation safety

board released yesterday. after landing safely, the air canada pilots were asked to call sfo traffic control to discuss what happened. >> a 51-year-old man is in serious condition after being assaulted while walking in san francisco's south of market neighborhood. police say the victim was on howard street near spear on wednesday afternoon when he was approached by a man who started yelling at him. investigators say victim did not know what the man was yelling about. authorities say the victim was then punched at least two times by the attacker who got away. >> as president trump returns from his trip abroad, he is tweeting about the new health care bill this morning, say, quote, republican senators are working hard to get their failed obamacare replacement approved. i will be at my desk, pen in hand. with that new bill is seeing new signs of trouble. republicans are facing opposition from members of their own party. the new draft still does not have the support to pass. it keeps some obamacare taxes on the wealthy. it also puts aside $70 billion that could help some americans cover high premiums. still in the bill are those deep

cuts to medicaid. initially projected to be nearly $800 billion. you'll find a full rundown of the new health care bill on our website, abc7news.com. richmond is the latest city to adopt a safe exchange zone for internet based transactions. since december, police say they have seen five robberies, two thefts, and nine victims in reported internet exchanges by people buying and selling things off craigslist, so the department has designated two parking stalls in the police station parking lot as a community exchange zone now. it's well lit, always someday surveillance and visible from the front doors of the station. >> we're hearing from the victim of a package theft in the south bay. you're watching it right here. see this lady. she's going to walk up to that porch and casually take the package and take off. but as abc news reporter shows you, what happens next is what makes the story unique. >> a surveillance camera at heidi's house on tulip road shows a woman walk up to the front door, grab a package and take it back to an suv at the

curb. heidi came driving up the street just in time to see it for herself around 5:45 wednesday. >> my first thought was honk the horn, stop, get them to stop for a second so i could get a clear photo. >> heidi did get pictures of the suv and license plate, all the while screaming at the woman and man behind the wheel. then she realized the thieves were yelling at each other. >> put it back, put it back. go run it back there, because she sees us. and the lady in the back seat starts yelling, i'm not going to do that. you figure it out. this is your idea. >> the couple tossed the package from the window and sped away. neighbors are upset by the crime but happy with how things turned out. >> great that she was able to do it without getting hurt. you never know with a thief or criminal what they might do. >> san jose police say video evidence is always helpful and heidi's could help solve other cases if not her own. >> i just hope that they learned their lesson and that they don't go around stealing. and then i also hope that other people who think of stealing

bridge. you can see it's a little hazy there. we'll have foggy spots on the road today. the breezes, they'll be back, but not quite as fast as they were yesterday on the bay. and that summer spread will continue for taking mass transit. 52 right now at west portal. the cool spots in san francisco. we have 55 in the marina and ocean beach for the warmer spots. if you're heading downtown, 53. we have san leandro at 52. santa clara at 56 right now. how about some 60s? walnut creek, 62. tracy, 65. fairfield, 57. american canyon, 59. and dress for 54 in petaluma and richmond. taking a look around the state today, the heat is creeping in from the desert southwest. 114 in palm springs. 110 in vegas. 104 in fresno to redding, to 96 in sacramento. notious have some thunderstorms. they're going to be right across the sierra. an isolated chance, and yosemite, 92, and tahoe at 83. here's a look at the weekend if you're heading up to tahoe. 83 with an isolated thunderstorm today. a little bit of a break tomorrow, and then a better

chance of scattered showers as we head towards sunday. notice our average highs are about 81 degrees. and we're going to hang out with temperatures running at about 83 to 85 degrees. in the overnight hours, we'll drop down to the mid to upper 40s. we have our chance of 100 degree heat coming up and it may not just be all in the inland east bay neighborhoods. my seven-day forecast next. here's alexis. >> good morning. taking a livelic outside this morning. so far we're looking good for the most part. looking at some very light traffic here on the bay bridge toll plaza. friday light so far this morning. give it about 15, 20 minutes and we should have the metering lights on. so things will start to fill in, but for now, looking great. a quick check of drive times as well. westbound 580 tracy to dublin in the yellow at 36 minutes. westbound 4, antioch to concord in the green at 14. and san rafael to san francisco, you're in the green at 17 minutes. we do have a pretty decent backup on 880 in oakland due to construction.

>> crews are waried the building that caught fire yesterday morning in lafayette might collapse. this video is about the safest vantage point right now. nine businesses are gone, including the chamber of commerce. here's what 100 lafayette circle looked like before the fire. and here's how it looks now, consumed by the flames. luckily, no one was inside when it caught fire. >> my livelihood, and just got to move on and find somewhere else. but it's an amazing building. >> fire officials estimate the flames caused more than a million dollars worth of damage. investigators are not deeming this fire suspicious. they're still looking for a cause. >> anyone collecting social security is about to see the biggest payment increase in years. >> plus, apple's new headquarters in cupertino isn't even open but it's always having an unprecedented impact on the area dwrrb. >> transportation officials just released their spending plan. released their spending plan. >>

5:12. we're hearing from the editor of a skateboarding magazine who needed staples in his head after this incident at the unpermitted street race that happened near dolores park. >> i was flying down the side and i hit a reflector. >> we caught up with jake phelps. as you can see, he's recovering in the hospital after the hard fall he took on tuesday night. he wasn't the only one. a skateboarder collided with an officer and flipped over a patrol car. as officers arrived to try to

get the injured help, the crowd started throwing things at them. phelps says that cops reacted too quickly. >> i think they overreacted. they don't really understand skateboarders want to go down hills. the hill was smooth. >> he did say that he understands police have to maintain law and order. police were investigating their response and checking body cams. >> san jose police hope someone can identify this man. police say that suspect took a case of beer at the 7-eleven on white road when the clerk chased after them, other people started beating the clerk. the victim ran back inside. other suspects went into the store as well and took more items before leaving in a large back four-door sedacand a white four-door sedan. this happened in february, but investigators are releasing this now because they still haven't id'd him. but police have identified the woman accused of using a fake $100 bill at a school bake sale. this is 41-year-old michelle

marie cruz. caught on camera at oliver's market. the high school held a fund-raiser there monday. chp in santa rosa say cruz bought baked goods with a counterfeit bill and got $80 in change. she drove off in a dark colored honda with custom rims. cruz has a criminal history dating back to 1995. convicted of theft, burglary, and forgery. >> thoughts and prayered offers for an experienced stuntman. >> he was injured on the set of "the walking dead." here's lindsey davis. >> in this morning's "gma" first look, real life horror on the set of a popular tv show. production on amc's action packed series "the walking dead" is temporarily shut down after a horrifying accident on its georgia set. >> we had someone fall about 25 feet off of a balcony straight onto concrete. we need an ambulance asap. >> a stuntman falling more than two stories onto a concrete floor wednesday.

in this 911 call obtained by tmz, an assistant director on set describes him as barely conscious. >> is he bleeding from anywhere? >> yes, coming out of hes nose. >> is he able to talk to anybody? >> no. >> the stuntman reportedly suffed a head injury so severe, he had to be transported to a level i trauma said in atlanta and we'll have the latest on this tragic at 7:00 a.m. with your "gma" first look, i'm lindsey davis, abc news, new york. well, it's 5:15 now. anyone collecting social security will see about a $28 increase per month starting next year. the trustees who oversee social security released their predictions yesterday, revealing the biggest increase in years. trust funds that support social security are estimated to run dry in 2034. >> the cost to drive on seven state operated bridges in the region could go up if voters approve a $3 toll increase next year. that includes the cost on the richmond san rafael bridge. the funding would pay for

improvement projects to ease congestion. our media partner says here are some of the projects that would affect the north bay. they include a connector between northbound highway 101 and the richmond-san rafael bridge. smart rail service to windsor. >> apple's spaceship headquarters in cupertino isn't even finished yet, but the business journal reports it's already giving the city a major economic boost. a recent financial report shows the total assessed value of the property increased more than $1.7 billion in the last fiscal year. and the business journal reports that more restaurants, stores, hotels, and residential units are being built near that campus. >> i love fiona the hippo. i know a lot of you do, too. i don't understand this next story. she is now an official honorary sheriff's deputy. >> the hamilton county sheriff's office recognized fiona yesterday at the cincinnati zoo. the office said they want to support the zoo and its

conservation. we fell in love with fiona as she was born in july six weeks premature. she was raised by human caretakers at the zoo and reunited with both parents earlier this week. >> you know fiona is like, i'm what? i'm a sheriff's deputy? okay. hi, mike. >> maybe she's going to patrol the water. because i can't imagine she's very fast on land either. >> don't underestimate her. >> never would. adorable, no doubt. all right. let's talk about what's going on outside. remember those high clouds where talked about a few minutes ago. there are some of them showing up on our san jose camera at 280 at 17. if you catch a beautiful sunrise this morning, #abc7now. high clouds and sunshine. slightly warmer today. a quick heat wave. it's almost here. and cooling early next week. let's talk about where the heat is going to be the most dangerous. actually up in the higher elevations because your temperatures at night will only fall into the 70s and 80s while the rest of us are going to fall into the 50s and 60s.

notice, the higher elevations that we have the heat advisory from about 8:00 tomorrow morning through about 9:00 sunday evening. all right, the heat starting to feel a touch of it in our inland east bay neighborhoods from say 90 in san ramon to about 96 in antioch. in the north bay, we're 88. breezes that kept you cool and comfortable, not going to be there as much today. 84 in novato and also in napa. as we head down to the south bay, 85. warm there, but getting hot in places like los gatos and gilroy and morgan hill. low 90s there. peninsula, we'll have 9 on both sides, but 62 in half moon bay to about 80 in menlo park to possibly 83 in redwood city. over along the east bay shoreline, temperatures in the mid to upper 70s. fremont the exception at 80. and then let's go to san francisco. 69. summer heat is absent, but technically, the is about where we should be. about 66 in the mission for another warmer spot. south san francisco, 68. my seven-day forecast, just two days of heat. go see a movie, hang out at the

mall the next couple days and then head back to work monday when it's not hot again. alexis. >> find somebody or some place with ac. that is the main message. taking you to some road work here that we have had in oakland on southbound 880. things are slowly starting to improve. as you approach 23rd avenue, we did have all lanes closed and traffic was diverted off for that overnight road work for a short time. it looks like we have at least some lanes back open. we should have had the two left lanes open by 5:00. we have a call in to see if all lanes are back open but we were up to almost a three-mile backup. and a quick update on a rollover crash in the saratoga area. rollover collision in the cleanup stages. far right lane still blocked. next traffic update just before 5:30. >> thanks. another reminder for public transit riders to beaware of your surroundings. a man had his phone stolen from the palo alto caltrain station early yesterday morning. police were able to quickly

arrest the suspect, a 17-year-old. palo alto police say a man in his 60s was sitting on a bench when a teen hit him in the face with something and then grabbed his phone. after police got the suspect, they found the phone in some bushes. >> this morning, two airlines are raising ticket prices for the first time in more than two years. american airlines and delta are both announcing price hikes. delta expects fares will go up as much as 4.5% in the quarter. the money is needed to cover the costs of fuel and labor. >> cash is king again. americans appear to be putting more cash in their checking accounts and leaving it there. a bank research company says about $2 trillion is sitting in checking accounts right now. the average checking account has about $3600. at the same time, retail and auto sales have been sluggish. finance experts think people are reluctant to spend. >> we were in union square for the 54th annual bell ringing contest.

5:24. here are the seven things we think you should know today. number one, today, the ntsb and faa will be at the site of a small plane crash in sonoma county that killed a pilot from san francisco. his three passengers were seriously injured, including his two young children. >> number two, despite heated moments a controversial medical marijuana dispensary in san francisco is a go. this after officials approved a plan by former oakland mayor jean kwan and her physician husband. >> number three, bastille day celebrations in paris this morning included this very special moment, a marching band spelled out the name nice in honor otthe 86 victims killed in the truck attack last year on bastille day in nice, france. >> number four, hope you enjoyed earlier this week where temperatures were close to average because today, the heat begins. and we're only about 2 to 5

we can taste the weekend. key can taste the warmup. good morning to you. it's friday, july 14th. >> thanks for being here. and mike, what do you say about today? >> i say today is going to be pretty nice. just a touch warmer than yesterday. that will jump start the real heat coming this weekend. here's a look at your 12-hour day planner. we'll start at 7:00. 55en half moon bay to antioch and mountain view at 63. the clouds back to the coast by noon. upper 60s to low 70s around the bay. mid 70s to 80s mainly inland. we'll have 90s, but mainly around antioch around 4:00.

a lot of upper 70s to mid 80s inland and upper 60s to mid 70s around the bay, and 60s around the bay, 70s inland. we'll show you the heat coming up next. how about the morning commute. >> good morning. we're doing okay, but we're starting to ramp up in all the usual places. a look at the bay bridge toll plaza. haven't gotten official word the metering lights are on, but it looks like. southbound 101 across golden gate bridge, six minutes. 10 across the bay bridge, and westbound 92, san mateo bridge also great at 13 minutes. we'll head out to the central valley coming up in less than ten. >> developing news on the crash in sonoma. a plane carrying a san francisco family went down in wine country. >> a man died. three people are in the hospital, including two children. abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield live at the sonoma airport. amy. >> reporter: hi, reggie. we're learning more about the victims. the woman who was onboard is the family's nanny. that's according to the press democrat.

she is in the hospital. so are the two children. the children's father was killed in the accident. that's william goldman, or bill. he was a professor at usf. and the grandson of philanthropist richard and rhoda goldman. they're descendants of the levi strauss family. his plane went down shortly after takeoff at the airport. the fire chief says the three survivors all have severe to critical injuries. the children, george and marie, are grade school age. they were taken to oakland children's hospital. the faa and the ntsb are here. they will be investigating this crash. live just outside of sonoma, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> thank you. accusations of pushing, fainting, someone even had to be escorted out. all of this at a planning commission meeting in san francisco. >> people got heated over a proposed marijuana dispensary headed up by oakland's former

mayor. janine is live in the sunset district. janine. >> reporter: natasha, we are here at the proposed site of the medical marijuana dispensary. it's right here, and it was approved last night. and that comes as a huge disappointment to some of the residents who live here. now, sheriff's deputies had to calm down the crowd that showed up to the planning commission meeting last night in the city. the commission voted to allow a medical marijuana dispensary to operate. it will be the first one to open on the west side. former oakland mayor jean kwan and her physician husband will be running the dispensary. she spoke just before the decision was made. >> it's a controversy, and probably a year from now, when more doctors start prescribing to seniors, this would have been less of an issue. >> crime is going up. traffic accidents is going up. insurance is going up. morality is going down. >> those who live in the

neighborhood oppose the dispensary because they say it's bad for the children. nearby schools, and many in the elderly chinese community, but dispensary advocates insist the underserved community in the sunset district will benefit. the decision, though, it can still be appealed by the board of supervisors. reporting live from san francisco, abc 7 news. >> thank you. happening today, divers back out to search for a missing san mateo county man's car. abc 7 news was in montara as drivers revealed a wheel. they also found a fuel tank lodged in the rocks. a possible car crash is a new theory in the disappearance of the 22-year-old. he went missing on his way to work more than a month ago. if it is moss' car, volunteers think this is where he may have flown off the pavement. a small chunk is missing from the low stone wall that separates the winding road from the rocky cliffs. >> the trial is supposed to begin today for the man accused of killing kate steinle, and there's a good chance it is going to be delayed. the judge is expected to assign

the case to another courtroom. steinle was shot two years ago while walking with her dad on pier 14. lopez sanchez told abc 7 news he found a gun, picked it up, and fired it by accident. lopez sanchez's immigration status touched off a national debate about sanctuary city laws. he had been deported five times before steinle was killed. lopez sanchez has pleaded not guilty to murder charges. >> santa clara county deputies are trying to fiengd out why a man shot and killed his roommate. the shooting happened yesterday morning in saratoga at a home on bucknell road. the 57-year-old suspect called police, admitting he had shot his female roommate. they found the 60-year-old victim inside of the home. she was taken to the hospital where she died. the suspect remains in custody this morning. >> concard police are trying to determine if there are more possible victims of a man arrested for molesting a child at a laundromat. police say this man, 60-year-old jose chavez, assaulted the child on tuesday. investigators say the incident was caught on surveillance

camera at that laundromat on monument boulevard. the child's grandmother called 911. hours later, an officer recognized chavez at a nearby shopping center and arrested him. >> new details in the case of four young men who went missing in pennsylvania. 20-year-old cosmo dinardo has confessed to killing them. a source says he killed the men after feeling cheated or threatened in a dug dreel. he then reportedly burned the bodies at his family farm. so far, just one body has been identified. dinardo agreed to plead guilty to four counts of first degree murder in exchange, prosecutors will not be seeking the death penalty. >> president trump is now heading back from paris after celebrating bastille day. mr. trump and first lady melania trump sat alongside emanuel macron and his wife at this morning's parade, but the president can't shake the russia controversy. yesterday, he was asked about his son's meeting with the russian lawyer. according to e-mails, donald trump jr. thought the woman was a government lawyer.

president trump sees it differently. >> my son is a wonderful young man. he took a meeting with a russian lawyer. not a government lawyer but a russian lawyer. nothing came of the meeting. and i think it's a meeting that most people in politics probably would have taken. >> and a moment sticking out for many. president trump's comment about the french first lady's figure. mr. trump told her, quote, you're in such good shape. beautiful. >> an update right now on a deadly attack in jerusalem overnight. we have just learned that the palestinian president moahmoud abbas has called the israeli prime minister, benjamin netanyahu, to condemn the attack, which is a big deal. the two leaders reportedly talk about restoring calm in the area where this happened near one of the world's holiest sites.

in brentwood. you may need the air conditioner. it's a friday evening. give yourself a break, come home to a nice, comfortable house. the next couple days, find creative ways to stay cool or head to the coast where the 60s are. monday, tuesday, and wednesday, temperatures back to average. we have been tracking fog together. tell me your side of the story. >> pretty dense in the north bay. mike went through the visibility levels. i have the layer on top of our traffic maps so you really can see, especially on the 101 corridor if you're coming down through santa rosa, petaluma, you could come into some visibility issues there. so far, we're still in the green, looking at our traffic flows. wee not seeing yellow or red this morning so it's not causing major delays, but just slow down and drive for conditions and here's a live look at san rafael, southbound 101 starting to fill in, and here, the fog lingering around the tree tops. not really an issue at the road surface level. quick check of mass transit. a heads-up for this weekend. caltrain will have a service change in effect as of tomorrow for their weekend service.
