let's get up and get going. this is abc 7 mornings. >> good morning, everyone. i'm carolyn tyler. thanks for joining uses on this sunday, july 16th. let's get a quick look at the weather with our meteorologist lisa argen. >> another hot and dry day. live doppler 7 picking up on very little fog to no fog out there and as a result the national weather service has issued red flag warning until 9:00 tonight, that goes in conjunction with our heat advisory. not only are we looking at the very warm temperatures again today. inland, the higher elevations, we're looking at breezy, northerly winds that continue to dry out the atmosphere. so we're starting out 10 degrees warmer in concord, six degrees

warmer in san jose, palo alto and livermore. that puts us at 75 in brentwood and upper elevations are in the upper 70s. 62 in danville and 67, and as you look at the golden gate bridge, nice and clear and temperatures in the 50s to mid-70s and mid-90s inland and that's by noon time and well into the triple digits away from the coast. carolyn? >> lisa, thank you. breaking news in the south bay this morning. firefighters in san jose are investigating what caused this car fire on sierra road. it broke out around 4:00 this morning. firefighters say flames quickly spread from the car to the brush on the side of the road. two acres burned before crews got the fire under control. firefighters say they don't know who left the car there. firefighters in contra costa county have put out a three-alarm fire in bay point. this is new video of that fire.

you can see heavy smoke and flames rising from two homes on north street. crews were called around 10:30 last night. they said they had the fire under control about an hour later. no reports of any injuries. the cause is under investigation. this morning we're getting a first look at new video of a water rescue in east palo alto. the u.s. coast guard rescued a child and two adults who went overboard when their boat capsized. all three are now at stanford hospital. abc 7 news reporter lonnie rivera has the story you will only see on abc 7 news. >> reporter: a coast guard chopper lifted one boater who was stranded in the choppy, chilly bay water near cooley landing in east palo alto. once it landed, one victim gave a thumbs up. they responded to the rescue

call saturday evening. >> i saw the fire trucks coming in, the police and i saw them wheeling in this strange boat. >> once they reached the open water and the wind and the wind waves started coming in immediately into the boat and it capsized their boat. >> it carried all three victims to shore, a friend in a kayak helped, too. >> basically the three victims that were in the water held on to the kayak. the person in the kayak notified 911 and the coast guard. >> martin watched the team of responders come together. she's happy it ended with lives saved. >> i was very impressed with the rescue. it was very efficient. they all showed up. >> all of the people in the boats had their life vests on and that's a critical point. >> reporter: boating with another buddy nearby who called 911 was critical, too. in east palo alto, lonnie rivera, abc 7 news. developing news as the largest of the 11 active wildfires in california now stands at nearly 50,000 acres. 1300 firefighters and national

guard members are battling the fire in king's county in the central valley. at last report, it was 68% contained. high winds are fueling another massive wildfire. this one in santa barbara county. the whittier fire has now burned more than 17,000 acres and eight homes in the los padres national forest. cal fire says it is 36% contained. more than 1,000 firefighters are trying to keep the flames away from homes. >> just getting ready in case they need to do any burning operation should the fire come out of the hills into the front country. >> the fire started last saturday. officials have told more than 2700 people to evacuate. a family in burlingame is suing that city over storm damage to their home. the homeowner says the damage earlier this year could have been avoided if the city had just done its job. abc 7 news reporter lisa amin

gulezian has the story. >> reporter: this whole area just flooded over. jennifer clack is talking about the wall of water that swept through her garage january 20th. >> it was all of the way up to here and literally everything got lifted up and dropped on top. everything. >> reporter: this is a photo of her garage that night and this is standing water in another room, a river of water rushed through the entire lower level of her house. >> i just kept thinking it was a bad dream i was going to wake up from and my house would be back together, my life would be back together and, like, no. not even close. >> reporter: it will cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to decontaminate and gut the house. clack blames the city for what's happened. >> it didn't look like any of the infrastructure around me was working the way it was supposed to, and so that's just downright terrifying. >> reporter: burlingame city attorney couldn't comment, but did say, quote, burlingame was hit with a microburst rain event, question,ive lent to a 500-year storm and our storm

water system is built to industry standards. >> clack's attorney said the city knew the drains couldn't hold up in a major rain, vent and it had paid for two prior claims at that same house to the prior owner. >> the city in this case in the complaint knew there were flood risks in this property related to specifically to storms and to the failure to clean the drain around the property and didn't take any action. >> reporter: still all clack's daughters want is to move back home again. in burlingame, lisa amin gulezian, abc 7 news. a gunman is wanted for a shooting in san francisco. abc 7 news was in the bay view district when police say a man was shot in the chest and it happened 3:30 yesterday afternoon on keith street. investigators believe it may be gang-related. the shooter got away. neighbors tell us they're concerned because there have been several shootings in that

neighborhood over the past few weeks. the gucci store in union square should be back to business after a pre-dawn break-in that may have cost more in damages than it did in stolen goods. police say someone rammed a vehicle into the store just before 3:00 yesterday morning. the inch-thick, triple-laminate glass doors and window collapsed, leaving the thief free to make off with thousands of dollars worth of purses. that left would-be shoppers out of luck for much of the day. >> i was hoping to get a gucci belt. my grandma looked it up in the hotel and everything. >> i'm shocked and something obviously untoward happened. >> it is just the latest in a series of union square smash and grabs. nearby montclair has suffered four break-ins since opening last june. sunnyvale, the department says -- let's go to sunnyvale's department of public safety. we're talking about how they had to shut down due to a bomb scare

this weekend. two citizens brought world war ii-era grenades into the lobby for disposal yesterday afternoon. that building had to be evacuated while the bomb squad was called. the explosives were found to be inactive, but the department is calling it a teachable moment. >> if you find something that you believe is an explosive or ammunition or anything like that, leave it where it's at. don't touch it. evacuate the area, call 911. >> the department tweeted out a photo of the disassembled grenades after returning to business. happening today, thousands of people will join the aids walk in golden gate park. the opening ceremony starts at 9:45. the walk begins at 10:30. so far this year they've raised about $1.5 million for hiv programs in the bay area. this is the largest aids fund-raiser in northern california. aids walk san francisco has raised more than $88 million over the past three decades.

>> new this morning president trump has the lowest six-month approval rating of any president in polls dating back 70 years. results from the latest abc news/washington post poll are in. only 36% of americans say they approve of mr. trump's leadership. 58% say they disapprove. most people surveyed think russia tried to influence the election. as abc's elizabeth herr reports, the president calls the russian

investigation a hoax. >> reporter: president trump enjoying another round of the u.s. women's open at his golf club in new jersey, but he can't get away from that alleged kremlin connection, and that meeting don junior had at trump tower last june with a russian attorney he was told was offering official documents and information that would incriminate history, part of russia and its government support for mr. trump. the president's son insists nothing came of the meeting also attended by trump's son-in-law, jared kushner and paul manafort. >> as far as you're concerned this is all of it. >> this is everything. this is everything. >> but there was more. >> the problem with this is that we've seen changing narratives. >> reporter: it turns out there wasn't just the russian lawyer natalia veselnitskaya trump admitted was at the meeting. also there was this man

akhmetshin once having been accused of being a soviet officer and we now know that days after the trump tower meeting the russian lawyer turned up at a congressional hearing about russia. her front-row seat reserve for her by a republican consultant with close ties to the trump campaign chair. while trump supporters turn up at his golf course with a message for the press. propaganda that isn't even true. we believe that, okay? so his supporters believe him, not you. >> reporter: elizabeth herr, abc news, new york. the discussion on the russia investigation continues on "this week with george stephanopoulos," jay sekulow and adam schiff will explain what's next for the trump administration. you can watch "this week" right here on abc 7.

senate majority leader mitch mcconnell say he'll delay a bill, and the senate leader had planned action on the controversial bill this beak, but senator john mccain won't be around to vote following surgery in arizona, and that put the measure in jeopardy because it's a closely-divided senate. republicans can't afford to lose only two of their party's votes if they want to get that bill passed. now to a road hazard we've all encountered at one point or another, debris flying off other cars or truck. video shows a heartstopping close call in florida. abc news reporter kenneth mowton has a look. >> reporter: a freak accident on the highway, a florida man miraculously surviving after his minivan is crushed. >> the car is rolled over and there is smashed metal into the vehicle. >> reporter: the jaw-dropping image, a large metal pipe soaring through the air, crashing right on to haze

escobar's vehicle in orlando. the debris came from above after a car hauling scrap metal flipped on the overpass. >> escobar, a husband and father of three escaping with his life. you can see others tending to his injuries on the side of the road. he'll be okay. >> the roadway dangers all too common, a wooden plank, a potentially deadly projectile. a steel plate from a railroad bridge hit a missouri woman's car in june. her 12-week old baby. >> i was freaking out. >> 200,000 road clashes involved debris between 2011 and 2014. 39,000 people injured, 500 died. >> safety officials warning drivers don't tailgate, stay alert and if you see debris coming, slow down and don't swerve at a high-rate of speed. a renowned stanford mathematician and th only woman to win the prestigious fields

medal has died after a long battle with breast cancer. maryam mirzakhani specialized ii theoretical mathematics and she had quantumec in antics and other disciplines. the iranian-born mathematician joined stanford as a professor and she is just 40 years old and is survived by a husband and daughter. hundreds of people from all backgrounds marched through sacramento to help empower african-american women. the march finished with a rally outside the state capital. they want black women to play a role at the forefront on conversations about social issues. >> time for us to speak out and step out on faith and to lead boldly, bravely and unapologetically. >> community leaders say they were inspired to hold black women's marches due to what they say was lack of diversity at the

women's march in sacramento back in january. >> now your accuweather forecast with lisa argen. >> good morning to you, the best part of the day right now. it's cool in some spots, upper 40s at the coast, live doppler 7 showing the clear conditions, but boy, we are warm in the upper elevations and also in the inland valleys and that's yet national weather service has extended our heat advisory and our red flag warning mainly in the upper elevations. the red is the red flag warning through 9:00 and the heat advisory, you felt it yesterday, so a continuation and even warmer today becaus yesterday we had some of the cloud cover in the afternoon. i want to show you this hurricane and it's fern anda and it continues to hold together in the warm water of the pacific. look at how many days it sustains its hurricane status before it becomes a tropical storm on wednesday. so there's hawaii. no threat there, but we'll continue to watch the tropics, an active time of year, of

course, in july. look at the flat flag here in july, this will increase throughout the afternoon and we'll get a sea breeze and 60 in oakland and 65, mountain view and 67 san jose and half moon bay at 49 degrees and a lot of sunshine here in the city. we'll have a slow warm-up here and it will be warmer than usual and we'll see upper 60s and it was in the 80s by the airport yesterday and once again, no real changes. 66 in livermore with mid and upper 50s in the north bay. some of the cooler valleys cooling off and not for long. we're already going in the other direction. by 8:00 we'll be adding two to three degrees per hour and the heat advisory and triple digits for many of you again this afternoon and we saw a few records to mountain view and mid to upper 80s and 101 at the concord airport and we get cooling as soon as tomorrow. san francisco, your day planner in the 60s by 10:00 and 66

degrees and that's when the aids walk begins at about 10:30 and then in the low 70s in the afternoon and very pleasant. you want to get to better weather and you head here at the coast and how often do we have a july warm day at the beach? it should be in the upper 70s to near80 in stinson, 70 half moon bay and it was in the low 70s yesterday and warmer today in the south bay. how about mid-90s, san jose and warmer than that as you get toward los gatos and a hot day in the peninsula with redwood city in the 90s and upper 80s and palo alto, and 70s to 80 down by the airport and 99 in santa rosa and east bay's warmer today with mid-80s in oakland and 94 in fremont. when you head inland look at those pinks and that means excessive heat with 102 in antioch. so if you're coming into oakland for the cleveland indians game, look at how warm it will be.

it's becoming common place to use navigation apps to get around, and generally they work well for road trips, but an effort is under way to develop a system for getting passengers to

the right train or track at transit stations like diridon station in san jose. the secret weapon are artificial intelligence. david lui has the story. our transit station is confusing enough with its maze of tunnels, ramps and platforms, but a project under way could benefit those needing directions and confirmation that they're in the right place or on the correct train. that could include those with disabilities. >> if we can reduce the need for transit and let people be, let people use public mass transit, there is going to be economically much more efficient. >> roberto is at uc santa cruz. he is collaborating with the research center in san jose, thanks to a grant from the national science foundation. it taps into passengers' smartphones and iphone and this beacon to guide people.

good morning, east bay. let's get up and get going. this is abc 7 mornings. welcome back, everyone. we are starting this half hour with a look at the weather with our meteorologist lisa argen. >> carolyn, good morning to you. hi, everyone. it is beautiful outside. i can say that now maybe for the next few hours and then the heat is coming back into play. the national weather service issued a red flag warning yesterday and it continues into today with high fire danger with 5,000 feet all over the bay area and this is in conjunction with the heat advisory that is in effect until 9:00. temperatures are well past 100 degrees inland and already starting out much warmer than yesterday. it's 10 degrees warmer in concord and six degrees warmer than san jossy and it is a

chilly 49 degrees in half moon bay. 67 in san jose with 74 in brentwood and upper elevations where we have the breezy, northerly winds and we are in the 80s. you'll notice the temperatures climb through the 60s and 70s, but by the afternoon we are in the 80s to 90s inland and over 100 degrees and 60s at the coast and a mild shoreline and a detailed look at the forecast in just a few minutes. >> thank you, lisa. >> as she said, it's going to be a hot one. temperatures in san jose expected to hit the mid-90s and the city will open several cooling centers today and anyone looking to beat the heat can visit 11 community centers open from 1:00 this afternoon until 9:00 tonight. here's a list of some of the cooling centers, cypress community and senior center, camden community center and roosevelt community center. the elderly and young children are most at risk for heat stroke.

we are now hearing from the family and friends of a santa cruz man who died battling isis alongside kurdish militia fighters. robert groet went to syria after turning 28. he explained he joined the kurdish forces to help them in their fight for autonomy. groet's family earned he'd been shot to death along with another american fighting isis. >> i'm sorry that he can't continue to do good work in the world. i'm sorry that his energy isn't here. >> he believed that we all had the capacity to change the world. you just have to do it. >> groet was a former occupy wall street protester and a volunteer medic. now to that deadly high-rise apartment fire in hawaii. residents were allowed back in the building yesterday. that fire started friday afternoon in a unit on the 26th floor. three people died, 12 others were injured.

abc news reporter marcy gonzalez has the details. >> reporter: flames tearing off this balcony, whipping through the 26th floor of this high-rise in honolulu. >> that was like a horror movie. >> reporter: apartments engulfed, residents' chilling screams cutting through the roar of the inferno. >> i heard three women's voices screaming, pleading, moaning, please help me! >> reporter: those who could, rushing out of the massive marco polo condominium complex, firefighters telling some residents to shelter in place, helping others through the blinding, suffocating smoke to safety. >> smoke, smoke, smoke. so many smokes. >> reporter: residents watching in disbelief from a distance. the thick plumes visible for miles. >> horrendous. there was flames shooting out and black smoke. >> reporter: a dozen people injured and at least three people killed found in two different units on the 26th floor. 54 brent rello calling coworkers

at hawaiian airlines after the blaze began, he was hiding under his bed unable to get to his mother. neither making it out alive. >> i drove down there and basically watched his floor be consumed. >> reporter: fire investigators at the scene still piecing together what caused the fire, but officials say what is clear is how much of this devastation was likely preventable. >> if there were sprinklers in this apartment the fire would be contained to the unit of origin. >> no sprinklers anywhere in this 36-story high-rise because building codes didn't require them when it was built in 1971. >> how is it possible that a corporation doesn't install something as inexpensive and as effective as sprinkler systems? yeah, there's anger. >> reporter: there were no sprinklers either in the apartment building in london where this tire tore through killing about 80 people. >> the mayor of honolulu says

the fire there will likely force a change. lawmakers will look into requiring that older buildings be retrofitted with sprinklers. santa monica, california. we are getting a clear view on the oroville dam. it gives us a look at the work being done to repair the spillway. you can see construction crews pumping in concrete to form the new foundation and drainage system for the spillway. the contractor has a november 1st deadline to finish up all of the repairs. you may recall how badly that spillway was damaged during this past winter's record storms. the disaster led to the massive erosion on the hillside, forcing the sudden evacuation of some 180,000 residents downstream. work will begin tomorrow on a stretch of road in contra costa county that washed away during

the winter storms and morgan territory road is closed from the area north of livermore to the area east of clayton. the section just south of marsh creek road was damaged by a landslide back in february. crews will work to install new retaining walls and improve drainage systems and put in a new water main and repave the road. the road is expected to remain closed through mid-october. developing news in florida where a sink hole that swallowed a boat and destroyed two homes has stopped growing. officials now say it has not had any significant movement recently. nbc news reporter victor okindo is on the scene. >> reporter: all eyes on this massive sink hole creating a disaster zone in the middle of a neighborhood. the ramirez family scrambling to safety, losing their home. >> it's emotional. i mean, what can you say? you wouldn't wish this on anyone. especially our neighbors.

>> reporter: pascoe county emergency officials taking us up to the very edge of the disaster area now filled with mud and toxic debris. >> reporter: there is a lot of hazardous material in here, there's fuels, septic tanks and household chemicals. >> this is the latest sinkhole to hit passcocounty in decades. those neighbors who evacuated won't be able to return home for at least a week. >> neighbors escorted to grab essential belongings recalled hearing cracks in the street and hearing the houses give way. >> it's creaking and splashing. you know, wood breaking and ripping. you know, sounds that, you know, just are not normal. >> reporter: the gaping sink hole is 225 feet wide and 50 feet deep, while unusually large, sink holes are a common problem in florida. they occur when lime stone under ground gets eaten away by water, creating a cave and the weight above becomes too heavy.

out of the north up to 30 miles an hour. so, of course, not good when things are so, so dry out there. live doppler 7 reflecting the lack of cloud cover here. so be very careful out there. it is so dry and we're looking at temperatures today climbing quickly without any clouds and then yesterday afternoon we had those clouds. today we won't. so we're going to be even warmer today. 58 in san francisco and oakland's at 60 and mountain view, and 67 in san jose and 50 at the coast and gilroy is at 60. the big dome of high pressure that's keeping us warm begins to move away from the bay area today and we'll get a sea breeze and it will be warm, near 80 in santa rosa. 70s half moon bay. 68 in concord and livermore looking at 66 degree. so near 80 in santa cruz yesterday and again today. a beautiful day if you can get there to enjoy the weather, otherwise, it's going to be a little oppressive out there with

a high-fire danger and the heat advisory and this is all certainly for above 1,000 feet and the entire bay area feeling the effects of all of that warmth. and so the triple digits with us in the north bay, clear lake, santa rosa and even into the south bay, we are well into the 90s and san jose, you know how warm it can get there as much as 10 degrees warmer and the city of san jose. so it will be a scorcher today, but look what happens tomorrow. we're already getting into some cooling and this looks more typical with 70s around the bay. look at how the onshore flow spreads and we have the green into the bay here. it will be a nice day on tuesday and wednesday we regain some warmth and it shouldn't get warmer than the mid-90s toward brentwood. if you're headed to menlo park it will be a warm day for summerfest. 86 degrees and we're looking at temperatures today from the upper 80s to near 90 on the peninsula and we talked about the triple digits inland and looking at 84 today in oakland.
