morning, we just wanted to make you aware that the closures tart this weekend so you can start planning properly. reporting live in san francisco, amy hollyfield, abc7 news. >> thank you. san francisco police investigating a deadly stabbing in the hayes valley neighborhood. police found a man stabbed to death on the sidewalk just after 7:00 last night. authorities have not said whether anyone has been arrested. >> happening today, the man charged with killing kate steinle on pier 14 is due back in court in san francisco. the second degree murder case against juan man sisco lopez sanchez could be sent to trial today. there's been a series of hurdles trying to pinpoint a trial date. right now, it seems the prosecutor may have a conflict. the judge asked attorneys to return today to give an update on when they'll be ready to proceed. >> this morning, o.j. simpson waking up knowing he's going to soon being a free man. a nevada parole board decided to release the now 70-year-old former football star almost nine years after he headed to prison.

emily joins us live from washington with the latest on this story. emily. >> good morning, reggie. this is the first time in four years the public has even seen o.j. simpson, and once again, his legal battles are capturing the nation's attention. >> i do vote to grant parole when eligible. >> thank you. >> almost nine years behind bars, and now freedom in sight for o.j. simpson. visibly relieved, simpson thanked the parole board after all four members voted in favor of his release. >> you think you can be successful? >> i'm not a guy who lived a criminal life. you know, i'm a pretty straight shooter. >> the now 70-year-old inmate apologetic when asked about the vegas kidnapping and robbery that landed him behind bars. but at one point, defensive. >> you believe that the property was yours? >> it's been ruled legally by the state of california that it was my property, and they have given it to me. >> just like that day two

decades ago, reaction to the ruling came quickly. >> everything else that happened 20 some odd years ago is irrelevant. >> i kind of feel like he deserved nine years and maybe longer. >> speaking at the hearing, simpson's oldest daughter and one of his victims who made a plea on his behalf. >> this is a good man. he made a mistake. and if he called me tomorrow and said, bruce, i'm getting out, will you pick me up? juice, i'll be here tomorrow for you. >> a tearful simpson sitting nearby, and now preparing for life on the outside. >> when o.j. simpson went to prison, smartphones didn't exist. really. so the world is going to be watching the most famous parolee in america very closely. >> simpson has requested to live in florida near some of his children. and he still earns about $25,000 a month from his nfl pension. in washington, abc 7 news.

>> emily, thank you. another team of firefighters from san mateo county is joining the battle against the major wildfire burning right now outside yosemite national park. the detwiler fire has spread to 71,000 acres. at this point, only 10% contained. more than 5,000 people are still evacuated from mariposa. coulterville, and surrounding areas. 99 buildings have been destroyed including 50 homes. abc7 news was in mariposa county where you can see the charred remains there. the fire destroyed the 76-year-old little church in the hills near the town of mariposa. >> it's a mess. one of our friends clarence, he just lost his house. it burned down. >> difficult time for everybody. this is probably the worst fire we've ever had. and it's nowhere near over yet. >> you have to feel for those people. calfire says the detwiler fire is slowing its spread but remains a big danger because of the hot weather, terrain, and heavy fuels from the wet winter.

>> the fire is 35 miles outside of yosemite national park. the park is not in danger of burning and remains open. as you can see, you can definitely feel and smell the effects of the smoke. that ash is filling the air. visitors are being warned about respiratory problems from the smoke. as the fire develops, you can get up to the minute updates through our news app. it's free to download. just remember to enable push alerts. >> police are investigating more violence involving a group of young people at an east bay b.a.r.t. station. authorities say a man was beaten and kicked in the head outside the richmond b.a.r.t. station. they say five to six juveniles assaulted the victim at about 11:30 yesterday morning. he is expected to survive. officers say they were unable to locate the attacker whose escaped in a surrounding neighborhood. >> this morning, police in fremont are searching for an arson suspect caught on camera. they say someone in a silver honda civic burned a neighbor's american flag. it happened near mission

boulevard. the homeowner told police the suspect came up to the home and burned a flag hanging out front. >> a san francisco planning commission is calling for a city wide moratorium on medical marijuana dispensaries. it came during a hearing on a proposal to put a cap on dispensaries in the excelsior neighborhood. they're working on new regulations that take into account the coming sales of recreational marijuana. until that happens, they say a moratorium is better than trying to impose regulations neighborhood by neighborhood. >> new developments at uc berkeley. college republicans say the school was blocking a conservative speaker from coming to campus. now, university officials say they are working with the student group to bring ben shapiro to cal. the young americas foundation says the former breitbart editor wanted to visit september 14th. campus officials told him all the free venues are booked that day.

we have 27,000 runners and about 80,000 spectators for the san francisco marathon this sunday. so a lot of road closures for this course as well. the most significant, likely here northbound golden gate bridge. that's fully closed from 6:00 to 9:00 a.m. on sunday. no vehicle traffic will be able to pass on that northbound side. now, the southbound side will stay open. but you definitely can expect delays. we'll have runners on the northbound side so folks ilbe slowing down to look at all of that. also, significant surface street closures including the embarcadero, midnight sunday until about 2:45 in the afternoon. this goes all over the city, golden gate park, the mission, petrero hill, and what do you know, we also have a giants day game on sunday. 1:05 first pitch. ifio rr heading to the game, we have detours in place getting there. all this information either on our abc7 news app or at abc7news.com. thank you. >> if you have ever wanted a shot at show biz, now is your

building in san francisco this morning. a beekeeper was hard at work delicately remauving the hive and a large honeycomb the bees created in a ventilation duct in the building on market street. greg shared these images with abc7 news. he initially thought the bees could stay because they weren't hurting anyone. but after finding out there were 40,000 of them, well, that's when he decided they had to go. >> i would go, too. >> mm-hmm. >> a half million dollars in refunds issued for people who paid for vacation packages they never got. people were told they could win a travel package to exciting destinations by considering a trivia question. if they answered correctly, they asked them to send $400 to cover the taxes for the trip. the federal trade commission alleges prizes were never delivered. refund checks are now being sent out to more than 53,000 people under a settlement with the ftc. >> speaking of settlements. volkswagen is going to pay
