bracing for extreme heat. temperatures will top 100 degrees in several parts of the country. ginger tracking that coming up. >> that's right. but first, we want to get to the very latest on o.j. simpson. he will soon walk free. the parole board in nevada deciding unanimously to grant him release after nine years behind bars. you can see there o.j.'s response, very emotional but thrilled with the outcome. and his family, also, wiping away tears. >> amy, as you know the hearing capturing attention across the country. millions were watching. here's what we know this morning. simpson will now be able to walk free as early as october 1st. he may try to move back to florida. that's where he was living prior to prison. and abc's matt gutman has been covering the case. outside lovelock prison in nevada this morning. good morning, matt. >> reporter: hey, good morning, david. o.j. simpson is already one step closer to freedom. prison officials saying he has already been moved from his cell to a separate wing of the prison for his own protection. what we saw yesterday in that 75-minute parole hearing seemed to be vintage o.j. we saw the charm, definiance an

anger, but also relief. >> mr. simpson, i do vote to grant for parole. >> reporter: o.j. simpson gushing with gratitude for the words he'd hoped for for nine years. >> thank you. thank you. >> reporter: the parole board taking just 30 minutes to reach that unanimous ruling. >> my vote is to grant your parole. >> grant parole. >> parole. >> reporter: as the 70-year-old hobbled from the hearing room simpson was heard exclaiming triumphantly, oh, god, oh. >> it was obviously a very emotional time. and mr. simpson, obviously, was a little bit emotional, as well. and even i got a little emotional. i have to tell you. >> reporter: the so-called parole hearing of the century lasted just over an hour. carried live on the networks, sports channels and cable news. the tension in the room broken inadvertently early on. >> we have that you are currently, well, very recently turned 90 years old. 90. i'm sorry about that. >> it feels like it. >> you look great for 90. >> reporter: but right out of the gate, simpson seemingly defiant about his conviction in the 2007 armed robbery of his

friend and memorabilia collector bruce fromong. >> so you believed that the property was yours? >> it's been ruled legally by the state of california that it was my property and they've given it to me. >> reporter: from a flash of anger to a flicker of emotion. o.j. wiping his eyes as fromong, his former victim, pleads for his release. >> this is a good man. he made a mistake. and if he called me tomorrow and said, bruce, i'm getting out, will you pick me up, juice, i'll be here tomorrow for you. i mean that, buddy. >> reporter: leaving the hearing simpson thanking the former victim. >> thank you. >> reporter: public reaction to his pending release far more muted than in 1995. when he was acquitted for the murders of nicole brown simpson and ron goldman. this time people taking to twitter. the hashtag ojsimpsonparole

trending worldwide, many raising an eyebrow about this statement. >> i basically have spent a conflict-free life, you know, i'm not a guy that ever got into fights on the street and with the public and everybody. >> reporter: simpson may be moving on. but nicole brown simpson's sister tanya who sat in that courtroom in 1995 can't forget. >> what would i say to him? you know what? probably nothing. he was part of our family. he was part of our life and that was shattered on june 12th. don't forget nicole and ron. it's not about simpson getting out. >> reporter: the nevada parole board is likely to grant o.j.'s request to move to florida to live with his two children, and while the goldmans say that they're going to continue to hound o.j. simpson for that $33 million they won in a settlement against him in that civil suit back in 1997, the one thing they can't touch is his nfl pension. that is protected by law. david.

>> all right, matt gutman in nevada for us. let's bring in our chief legal analyst, dan abrams this morning because, dan, you were honest about o.j. simpson's performance during this parole hearing. you thought he wasn't very good. and yet, it was a unanimous vote. so what happened here? >> so he basically relitigated the crime again. he didn't express enough remorse. i mean, this was easy, right. all he had to do was go in there, be contrite, say he's sorry. say he's ready to move on, say he's ready to be a productive member of society. and instead, he starts going into all the details of why he was wronged, in effect, and he wasn't that bad. the bottom line though is that there is really a form that these parole officers follow. and i'm confident that they had made that decision before o.j. simpson came in. so he really would have had to do something so bad, so out of the ordinary, so unexpected to change what i think were probably the four votes that he had before he even came in. >> you heard one of the parole commissioners tell him that he's going to be watched very closely

and even listed some of the things that he'll face in life on parole. >> yeah, there's going to be restrictions on travel, on alcohol, on who he can associate with, on weapons possessions. and this is a different world. this is now a world with smartphones that o.j. simpson didn't have when he went to prison nine years ago so everyone is going to be watching the most famous or infamous parolee in america as he goes around. and remember, that's also going to be relevant with regard to the goldmans because they want to know, what's he up to? how is he making any money? because any money that he earns is supposed to go back to paying back that civil judgment. >> you bring up that point. he's 70 years old even though the commissioner had him at 90 in the beginning. what are the chances of him getting a job? what kind of job would you imagine? >> i don't think he's going to get a job. because if he gets a job -- >> he'll hand it over. >> the only reason he would get a job is if the parole board demands it.

it is one of the possible things they could require. i don't know that they'll require a 70-year-old man to necessarily get a job. >> the money he gets from the nfl still, they can't touch. >> the pension stuff they can't touch. and remember, he's been accruing that over time while in prison, as well. >> dan abrams with us this morning, dan, thanks very much. david, joining us in a morning exclusive o.j.'s friend bruce fromong who was the victim of that botched robbery attempt and spoke on o.j.'s behalf in court yesterday. bruce, good morning. i know your testimony back in 2008 was part of the reason why o.j. ended up behind bars in the first place. why the change of heart? >> well, i think that o.j. has served his time and, you know, he served what he was supposed to do. and it was time for him to get out. >> you had a gun pointed to your head during that robbery attempt. how does one forgive? i know you probably will never forget it. but how does one forgive that? >> it wasn't o.j., let's make it clear. it wasn't o.j. that put the gun to my head.

that was mcclinton that came up, threatened to kill me. >> o.j. was found criminally responsible for creating the situation which led to that. >> yeah, yes, he was. he was the one that, you know, but he was also the one that even though he denies it, he was also the one that said put the gun down. put the gun down. he was waving and making a motion for mcclinton to put the gun down. and that's when mcclinton backed up, as well. >> bruce, you've said for quite some time now that you don't believe the sentence o.j. received was justified. why not? >> well, maybe according to the law it was. i'm -- you know, i'm not a lawyer. i don't know exactly how they determine how long -- i had told the d.a. at the time i felt that one to three years was a proper sentence for it. you know, the people that came in, the guy that came in and hit me, you know, he got 27 months. mcclinton, the guy that put a

gun in my face, threatened to kill me, got probation, you know. when judge glass sentenced o.j., you know, she was talking about how somebody could have been killed. how somebody -- you know, anybody could have been hit by a stray bullet. he gets 9 1/2 to 33. she gets to mcclinton, and it's probation. tom riccio, who basically set this whole thing up, got total immunity. after waiting eight days, makes $320,000, goes to o.j., lies about going -- there's going to be thousands of pieces of his personal memorabilia. he helps plan this whole thing, gets total immunity. i mean, you know, nobody in there served time except for stewart who did 27 months and o.j. simpson that did 9 1/2 to 33. >> all right, bruce, we appreciate your time this morning. thanks so much for joining us. >> my pleasure. >> david? >> we'll have more on this but first the other stories we're following this morning.

as we told you more than 100 million americans will feel the heat today. temperatures topping 100 degrees, spreading across the country as we now enter day three of the heat wave here in the east. ginger is outside the studio with the latest. how is it feeling out there, ginger? >> this is when it goes beyond uncomfortable and potentially dangerous. we're closing in on 80 degrees already after 7:00 a.m. and i want to show you why we have an excessive heat warning. excessive heat warning in philadelphia, also places like des moines or wichita, kansas, kansas city and st. louis. heat advisories that stretch from texas all the way to here in new york city. that dangerous heat is under that dome of high pressure. it's called a ring of fire where it sits and spins and for days on end this heat is cumulative and will feel this afternoon like it's 109 in des moines, 101 in atlanta. and 103 in richmond, virginia. so, again, crossing that line you have to hydrate if you're outdoors. >> hydrate and keep your eye on your neighbors. ginger, thanks to you. overseas a deadly earthquake striking a popular tourist spot near the coast of turkey and greece. injuring hundreds and killing at least two.

our chief foreign correspondent terry moran is tracking this. he's live in london this morning. good morning, terry. >> reporter: good morning, david. this is a magnitude 6.7 quake. that's a long, strong shake. striking in the north in the gnc. the greek islands, especially the island of kos and the turkish coast hit hard. it was just after 1:30 in the morning, people finishing up a summer night out and video capturing the moment. lights going out in restaurants. flash of light there on the horizon. patrons and hotel workers scrambling for cover. thousands of tourists and residents spending the night outdoors. the threat of aftershocks very real right now. fires breaking out. so far two dead, both tourists, up to 200 injured in greece and turkey. this was a major event there. david. >> bracing for possible aftershocks. thanks so much. amy? we are also, david, following the very latest headlines out of washington. a lot of news on the russia investigation. donald trump jr. and former campaign chairman paul manafort facing a deadline this evening.

they must respond to the senate judiciary committee's invitation to publicly testify next week. if they don't, senator chuck grassley says they will be subpoenaed almost immediately. jared kushner, president trump's son-in-law and senior adviser, is heading to capitol hill on monday to speak to the senate intelligence committee in a closed door session. and the news this morning about a shakeup and new strategy from president trump's legal team, our chief white house correspondent jonathan karl has all the latest. good morning, jon. >> reporter: good morning, amy. as the justice department reels from the president's attacks on his own attorney general, there are signs of changes coming here to the white house. donald trump is suddenly tight-lipped about the attorney general. after unloading on him to "the new york times" -- >> mr. president, does jeff sessions still have your full support? >> thank you, everybody. >> do you still support your attorney general? >> reporter: deputy press secretary sarah sanders says there's one sure sign the president supports sessions. he still has his job. >> clearly he has confidence in

him or he would not be the attorney general. >> reporter: as for sessions he made it clear thursday he has no intention to leave the job unless he is pushed out. >> we love this job. we love this department. and i plan to continue to do so as long as that is appropriate. >> reporter: the president also took aim at robert mueller. the special counsel leading the russia investigation. telling "the times" that mueller would cross a red line if his investigators start looking into trump family finances. >> i think that's a violation. look, this is about russia. >> reporter: but in some ways, the russia probe is is already a family affair. president trump's senior adviser and son-in-law jared kushner is set to appear before the senate intelligence committee on monday for a closed door interview. also in the mix, his son, don jr., and former campaign manager paul manafort. both currently considering an invitation to testify before the senate judiciary committee. and if they don't appear voluntarily -- >> i'm not concerned because if

they don't, they'll be subpoenaed. >> reporter: the question now is whether the president has confidence in robert mueller in his role as special counsel. in that interview with "the new york times" the president was quite critical of mueller and his team. sarah huckabee sanders was asked questions about this. she said the president has no intention to fire mueller, but she didn't rule it out. she said she couldn't predict what the president would do if mueller, quote, did something outrageous that would force him to act. she couldn't predict whether or not that could prompt some kind of action from the president. amy? >> this is all coming as the white house is facing even more shakeups, yes? >> reporter: absolutely. we are told that there is expected to be a new communications director announced today, anthony scaramucci, businessman, trump family friend. he met with the president and with ivanka trump for over an

hour yesterday here at the white house. we're told he is expected to be named communications director. and that most of the senior staff here, including press secretary sean spicer, didn't even know that this was the plan or that the president was meeting with him. >> all right. jon karl, thanks for the very latest. we appreciate it. we turn now to new developments in that deadly police shooting in minnesota that killed a bride-to-be after she called 911 for help. overnight hundreds marching in her honor as the minneapolis police chief broke her silence. abc's alex perez is in minneapolis with all of the details on that, good morning to you, alex. >> reporter: hey, good morning, amy. the police chief here says justine should still be alive and this should have never happened. and they're also calling on the officer who shot her to cooperate with the investigation. this morning, for the first time the minneapolis police chief is speaking out about the shooting of 40-year-old meditation and yoga instructor justine damond. >> justine didn't have to die. this should not have happened. >> reporter: damond called 911 late last saturday night, saying she thought someone was being

assaulted in the alley behind her home. i can hear someone out the back she says in a transcript of a call. i'm not sure if she's having sex or being raped. investigators say officers matthew harrity and mohamed noor responded to that call, driving down a dark alley with their squad car lights off but never found the suspect. >> shots fired. we've got one down. 530. i'm starting cpr. >> reporter: harrity selling investigators they were startled by a loud noise when damond appeared near the driver's side. noor, who was on the passenger side, firing his gun through the open driver's side window. both officers' body cameras off. harrity's attorney told "the minneapolis star tribune" it's certainly possible the officers believed they were the target of an ambush. but the minnesota attorney representing damond's family in australia doesn't buy that argument. >> the family wants justice in its largest sense. in other words, we want the officers to be properly trained.

manafort have been publicly invited to testify next week. more than 40 wildfires are burning across the west. that massive one outside yosemite national park destroying at least 50 homes right now. 5,000 residents have been forced to evacuate the area. thinking about all those families this morning. we'll begin with a look at what life after prison may be like for o.j. simpson. he'll soon walk free after almost nine years behind bars. we'll speak with two of his friends. they're standing by here in a moment live. abc's victor oquendo first in florida where he may try to relocate when he goes free. good morning, victor. >> reporter: good morning, david. by all accounts this is where o.j. simpson will end up if he's allowed to relocate from nevada. he's lived in florida before. his kids now live in the tampa/st. pete area and hearing from his former manager who says come october simpson will be right here. this morning the state of florida is preparing for the possible return of o.j. simpson. his former manager telling abc news he thinks simpson wants to live near those closest to him. >> i think he'll come to the tampa area. a lot of his friends are in tampa. i'm in tampa. his kids are here.

>> reporter: simpson is no stranger to the sunshine state. he lived here for about ten years soaking in the sun and a lot of time on the links but so far his attorney not commenting on where he will head once he's released from lovelock correctional center. >> mr. simpson has plenty of options, okay? he has plenty of options. >> reporter: he would first have to establish that he halys a support system in the area. the florida department of corrections saying as is the case with any offender who transfers under this routine procedure he will be assigned to a florida probation officer and will be supervised in accordance with the conditions of his parole. after thursday's hearing, simpson's youngest son justin was spotted going to the gym in florida. he had nothing to say about his father's parole. father and son not on speaking territories. justin and his sister sydney were raised from south florida after their father's acquittal on murder charges for their mother. he had trouble laying low. during a blowup can his ex-girlfriend simpson called 911 himself. >> we have a problem here. i'm trying to get a girl to go to rehab. she's been doing drugs for two

days. >> reporter: in 2001 he faced charges after a road rage incident. the home he bought in 2000 fell into for closure and is now on the market. but wherever simpson ends up he'll have a nice cushion. his pension of $25,000 a month and has been growing in an account. his retirement account with the screen actors guild could now be worth millions. the rules are strict. simpson will be subject to random drug and alcohol testing as well as random searches. any violations, he'll end up right back in nevada. david? >> victor, our thanks to you. two of his friends are joining us. dr. henry johnson from miami and tom scotto from reno. gentlemen, good to have you both. dr. johnson, i wanted to start with you, if i could. i know you visited simpson just a few weeks back. what was his mood and did he sense this was coming? >> well, o.j., he had a pretty positive mood. he was optimistic. nevertheless, he was realistic. he knew that his fate was in the

hands of the parole board and he's done his best to serve his time honorably and i believe he has. i've been to the prison to visit with him at least a half a dozen times. and most times that i see him there he's very upbeat. the guy is almost serene. he's weirdly inspiring because, you know, a guy that's lost everything from a castle to a cage, the guy can maintain some positivity and he's respected in the prison. he was respected by the guards. he was respected by other inmates. >> do you think he learned anything while he was in prison? >> well, obviously we all learn something day to day. i mean, o.j. has a christian base. he's fundamentally christian and he's got a chance to ponder about his mistakes that he's made in the past and i know he's grown as a 70-year-old man. >> doctor, i want to bring in tom. i know you were at the hearing with simpson's daughter and sister. you witnessed the moment. what can you tell us about his life come october? where does he plan to live?

>> well, he's going to go to florida. there's several options actually. i heard somebody say he'll go to tampa but he's not going to go to tampa. but we have several options we're talking about. we first have to go to florida, report to the parole board, i'm sure, and then from there we're going to go visit his sister in california, we're going to do a road trip. he wants to visit all the people that died while he was in prison and pay his respects. he wants to visit his daughter's grave. he wants to visit nicole's grave and we're just going to spend time with family out there. >> he's going to visit nicole's grave? >> yes. >> and you had said at one point he might live with you for a time until he can figure out where he's, in fact, going to live. do you see that as a possibility? >> that's -- we're talking about several options. we're not really sure yet and, you know, i really can't

disclose that right now, but there's several options that we have. >> but you -- >> he has many ongsz. >> but it's your guess he will, in fact, end up in florida and dr. johnson, before we go, i wanted to ask about some of the criticism from some who were watching who were expecting o.j. simpson to be more contrite. how did you find him watching? >> well, once again i think he's a very strong man. o.j. still believes in his innocence as well as he's got plenty of followers including me that believe that he was unjustly found guilty of liability of ron goldman's death and nicole's death, it's a shame. we feel very sad that we've lost those two people. as a matter of fact, americans have lost -- we've lost compassion for each other as a diverse ethnic group. america's strength is based on its diversity and we need to come back together and unite this country so it can remain strong. >> dr. henry johnson, tom scotto, we appreciate your time.

concern now. he is away from the general population because apparently even the prisoners here watched that parole hearing and there is some concern over his safety. now, the parole board is likely to grant his request to move to florida to be with his two kids there. his friends tell us he's looking forward to playing golf there. also, he will visit the gravesite of his daughter and of nicole brown simpson, that's the ex-wife he was acquitted of murdering in 1995. now, reaction, as expected online, has been mixed. there's been some relief. the hashtag ojsimpsonparole trended worldwide. also his comments about not ever having conflict in his life raised many eyebrows. one conflict in his life is the goldman family. they say they're going to continue to go after that $33 million they won against him in a settlement in that 1997 civil suit. one thing they can't go after,

think your family will ever receive justice. i was curious in watching the parole hearing what you thought when o.j. simpson said he's led a conflict-free life. >> well, everybody in the world except him knows he's led a conflict -- that he has not led a conflict-free life. he beat up his first wife. he beat up nicole numerous times. he had numerous other altercations with other people over the years. hardly conflict-free. nor do i suspect it'll ever be conflict-free. he's just not capable of being that person. >> and speaking to that, kim, i know that you have spoken publicly about o.j.'s propensity for violence. you heard him there say he's never pointed a gun at anyone in his life. what do you say to the people who may come in contact with simpson once he's freed? do you -- how do you feel about the public safety with o.j. simpson out? >> well, i wish we would have learned that in the parole hearing yesterday. i wish that the parole board members would have asked that, and pressured him a little bit more on what his life is going to be like and what he learned

and was he rehabilitated. i don't know. he -- he stormed a hotel room with guns and goons to get a shirt back. that tells you what this person is capable of. he stabbed ron and nicole to death. i realize that wasn't proven in a criminal case. we proved that in a civil case. he thinks he's above the law. i guess we'll figure it out. >> you bring up the parole board. you heard one of the commissioners, she held up the hundreds of letters and said we had many in support of simpson but ma in opposition, too, who wanted the acquittal and then the civil case to be brought up in front of the parole board. they said they would not do that. you knew that was the law. that it wouldn't be but how frustrating was that? >> for me, it's very frustrating. because my perception of a parole hearing is to determine whether this individual is going to potentially be a threat to society, whether he has the possibility of doing something bad again, another bad decision. and i think that's just who he is. they never pressed him about anything.

you know, he snapped at one of the commissioners who i forget -- the first gentleman who spoke, he snapped at him. there was no feedback to that. he lied numerous times about many things. there was never a question -- he was never requestioned about anything. my sense was they had a checklist of whatever it was, ten things. and they checked them off. and as long as he answered the proper number of items on the checklist, it was a done deal. >> kim, you've written a book called "media circus" and you talk about suffering personal tragedy all within the sharp gaze of the media. i know that you have a 13-year-old son. what do you say to him? his middle name is ron, too, by the way, isn't it? what do you say to him about yesterday's events? >> stay focused. stay continuing to live a life with honor and integrity and

grace. my dad and i do a lot of work for victims and survivors. this is is not unique to our family. this happens daily. i want my son to know you fight back and you voice your opinion and your feelings and you speak out when you think there's an injustice. and i hope that i've done right by that. >> and she has. >> you've done a lot of work on that front. and i should just say one of o.j. simpson's supporters and friends earlier this morning said that he plans to visit nicole brown simpson and i'm curious when you heard that, what your reaction would be and how moving forward does your family accept the fact that he's going to be a free man come october? >> well, honestly we've lived our life with him being a free man. we've done this. so we've had nine years of reprieve. we'll go back to doing what we have done. i run a nonprofit working with teenagers. i do stories on other survivors and raising my kid. we're active in the world of

and hiring a trainer. >> he was a guy who was down on his luck but at the same time i also saw that there was that light behind his eyes. >> reporter: he began betting on himself. and after only 5 1/2 months that incredible transformation. now down to 175 pounds. and for his end of the bet, walking away with $600,000. and it's no surprise. research has shown that people with financial motivation are five times more likely to meet their weight loss goals than folks without a cash incentive. but in the end he says he was motivated by something bigger than money. family. >> i want to be around my nephews and nieces. give them the uncle they should look up to, not somebody that is a mess. no money could be placed on the value of yourself. if you value yourself, you should go out there and make yourself the best you can be. >> an amazing story and walter says there is no way that he is ever going to be going back to his old lifestyle. but he did allow himself one indulgence when he reached his goal.
