these new train also carry more people and relieve some of the bad bay area traffic congestion. >> this is a great celebration. we've made history against all odds. >> this is good soil. >> reporter: these golden shovels have been waiting a long time to break ground. the cal train electric project has been decades in the making. the $2 billion program finally able to secure funding, pushing the 153-year-old rail line into the 21st century, by converting the diesel service into electric trains. >> today, we're recognizing a successful train, it's about the future, about clean air, about efficiency, speed, and not sitting on the freeway for a couple of hours bumper to bumper. >> reporter: governor brown and other politicians marked the milestone at mill bray station. >> it's about convenience, quality of life for families, so people don't have to spend all

that time in their car. >> it was something that we desperately needed. if this didn't come through, think about having another seven lanes of traffic on 101. that's what it means. >> reporter: the trains will be faster, run more often, and carry more passengers. right now, 65,000 people ride cal train each day. the project should be complete in 2021. alyssa harrington, "abc7 news." while we're talking mass transit, you have one more week to vote on the seat colors for the new cars. there are two options, blue or black. each has a contrasting color, as well. cal train posted these on the website to show how each color would look in the new car. in may, voters picked this design for the outside of the new train cars. to vote on the seat color, look for a link at abc7news.com. new at 6:00, you can see on this map where dozens of animals were discovered in two houses. 50 cats were found in a home on

monday. yesterday, police officers turned up even more animals during a welfare check on barnsly court. officers collected 27 animals, including dogs, cats, ducks, rabbits, doves, and a rooster. work is now being done to find homes for the animals. richmond's mayor wants answers after he witnessed a man being beaten by a group of teenagers outside the b.a.r.t. station. police began a probe, and now police are investigating the crime. melanie woodrow tells us more. >> reporter: bleeding and hurt, the mayor says he took this picture of a man attacked by a group of teamers outside the richmond b.a.r.t. station thursday morgue. >> as i got closer, i saw a woman screaming at them, stop, stop, get out of here. >> reporter: the mayor called 911, but an operator told him it was a b.a.r.t. problem. so he called b.a.r.t. dispatch. he says there were no b.a.r.t.

police officers on the scene. he also took this picture of two b.a.r.t. employees. >> i was astounded that they didn't try to get out and do something to help. >> reporter: police deputy chief lance hait. >> i understand the employees were maintenance workers, so they have no law enforcement training, so we would ask them be a good witness. >> everybody has a primary job, but the secondary job ought to be whatever needs to be done at the time to make the system work. >> reporter: b.a.r.t. police began the preliminary investigation but say it's in richmond police department's jurisdiction. still, given the proximity to the b.a.r.t. station, witnesses want to know where b.a.r.t. police officers were when it happened. >> as much stuff as goes on around here, they're never here. they're always here afterwards. >> reporter: the deputy chief says each b.a.r.t. police officer is assigned a beat. >> there's no way we can guarantee everyone is going to see a police officer during their trip. >> i have a problem.

i would like to find out how it's going to be fixed. >> reporter: b.a.r.t. police say they're doing all they can to be proactive and reactive. melanie woodrow, "abc7 news." the battle resumed today over a key witness in the kate steinle murder case. lawyers for the suspect continued their efforts to force a federal ranger to testify in the case. prosecutors claim that lopez sanchez used a gun stolen from a ranger's car to shoot the 32-year-old on a pier along the city's embarcadero. federal officials blocked an attempt to make the ranger testify. the defense explained why the agent's testimony about the condition of the gun would be relevant. >> we find it ironic that the trump administration is trying to prevent this person from testifying or telling the truth about what happened.

>> so this is really about two things. number one, whether or not the defendant fired the gun. and number two, whether he did so with implied malice. and that's what this case is all about. >> the judge gave the defense until september to complete their request with federal authorities. in the meantime, the case will continue next week when it could be assigned to go to trial court. evacuations were lifted today near the delwiler fire. the fire has been burning for six days and covers an area nearly the size of san francisco and oakland combined. containment is up to 15 merz. 58 homes and 60 other buildings have been destroyed. the fire continues to move south. so far $11 million has been spent fighting this fire. this is a time lapse view of smoke filling yosemite. we'll get a closer look the impacts this fire is having.

if you live south of the golden gate and have plans for a trip north sunday, the marathon may alter those plans. as a safety precaution, the bridge will close all north bound lanes for the first time ever to accommodate and protect the runners. wayne freedman is live from marin county with more on that, and a preview of the race. wayne? >> reporter: good evening, dan. we get a good sense of the danger. let's walk over. you've seen these kind of cars going through at high speed. now imagine 27,000 runners 2in lane with traffic wizzing by. that's why they're closing the lanes on sunday. if you don't yet have the perfect picture of the golden gate bridge, best to try for it before or after next sunday morning. >> you may thank the woman with 250 cameras. nothing moves on or around this

bridge that she cannot see. but it's what she might not be able to control during the san francisco marathon that left her worried. >> we have solid runners, shoulder to shoulder, for an hour and a half. you know, just an errant driver could cause disaster. >> reporter: from 6:00 to 9:00 a.m. the bridge will close to all north bound traffic for the first time ever in this race. today, marathoners expressed race. >> there's a cone and you're running with cars going by at 55 miles per hour. even just a slight swerve could take out a lot of runners. >> reporter: that's dean, who ran a quick five miles just to meet us for this interview. come sunday, he intends to run two marathons, back-to-back, for individual charities, beginning at midnight. >> running through golden gate park at night, it's romantic. >> reporter: they began checking

take a look at this video from the east river in new york city. the fire department says a sea plane heading for the hamptons tried to take off. it hit water on the thirdhirdhid attempt. a fireboat took the disabled plane to the 23rd street marina. that's what you're watching here. no one was injured, which is remarkable and good news. let's go to washington now. new faces will represent president trump after a shakeup at the white house. press secretary sean spicer announced he's quitting after six months on the job. his resignation became after president trump appointed anthony scaramucci as white house communications manager. he spoke after being introduced to reporters. >> i think there's been, at times, a disconnect between the way we see the president and how much we love the president, and the way some of you perhaps see

the president. i certainly see the american people see the president the way i do, but we want to get that message out there. >> back here in the bay area, one of president trump's biggest critics, how minority leader nancy pelosi, weighed in. >> i don't have any comment about sean spicer. what's important is the six-month anniversary of the president's inauguration and he talked about jobs. we haven't seen a jobs bill. >> deputy press secretary sarah huckabee sanders will replace spicer. she's filled in for spicer during white house press briefings recently. a business that's been in the same place for 20 years has been forced to move, and the owner is wondering why it happened now. a popular taco truck that's parked by the intersection for 18 leslie brinkley joins us now.

>> reporter: the taco truck has been an iconic stop for workers on their way two and fro and fre day. she's had no problem, she says, until this year when she was shocked to learn that she had to move. the mexican food and cold drinks have been hot sellers at nellie ramirez's food truck for 18 years now. construction workers and locals stop by for lunch along busy vineyard avenue. loyal customers are going to bat for her. >> it's very, very sad. that somebody who has worked hard for 18 years to build a business where her clients expect her to be, she is now forced to relocate who knows where. >> reporter: she says her truck was always pulled over near the entrance here located on

property owned by ruby hill winery. they complained this year, because increasing traffic volume meant patrons were parking on the winery's private road. in some cases, big rig trucks. nellie says the city told her they were forcing her to move because her truck was obstructing traffic. no one from the city returned our call. >> she was there for more than 18 years, so she does not understand why they're moving her now, that they didn't 18 years ago? >> reporter: now her truck is parked across the street, and business, she says, is slipping. >> oh, yeah, 75%. not too much people come. >> reporter: the winery issued a statement saying -- >> reporter: i'm leslie brinkley, "abc7 news."

the amphitheater was supposed to be less happen an hour away from a concert with matchbox twenty and counting crows. but tonight it's all quiet. david louie is live to explain why, david. >> reporter: dan, those two signature bands are cooling their heels tonight, unable to perform here because of a collapsed roadway that blocked access to the stage for their equipment. and their fans are really disappointed. the big decision to cut the cord, to so speak, was made at 1:00 this afternoon. live nation says it discovered a collapse in the road that gives bands access to transfer their equipment to the stage, very important. and the hole got bigger overnight and it was decided metal trench covers were not viable to cover the hole. the show is rescheduled for tuesday evening with one big change, counting crows will not perform due to another

commitment. so matchbox twenty will do a longer set. still, fans are not too happy. >> never heard of anything like this. can't unload the equipment, really? we'll help carry it, guys. >> exactly. >> so without speakers, you can't have a concert. it should have been better preparation here for that. >> things happen. >> yeah, it does. but you still have to, you know, make sure everything works all the time. >> reporter: the tuesday show won't help those who came from out of town or had other plans. they can get a refund. one couple told me today, it happens to be their anniversary and this is how they wanted to celebrate as big fans of matchbox twenty. the wife will have to wait you are till tuesday to see her favorite, rod thomas. all of that is contingent on the repairs being made. live nation says that will happen over the weekend. they'll try to get it wrapped up

at ft. mason. san francisco's ride based service lift is inviting everyone to join. lift says it will open its network by inviting automakers and tech companies to gather data. officials say the open strategy is a way to bring the benefits of self-driving cars to market faster. lift doesn't want to make cars, but make a standardized system for use on its network. car windows were the targets for vandals in livermore overnight. and being in a gated community didn't provide protection. plus, a month of metro shutdowns starts tomorrow for half a dozen muni stations. what you don't know about

city is taking steps to provide affordable housing and ensure locals get some of the vacancies. >> a new apartment building just opened up here. kate larson visited it today and spoke to some of the grateful residents. >> reporter: today, community leaders celebrating a first of its kind housing development, hoping it will set the tone for more low income homes. >> other neighborhoods that are facing the pressures of gentrification that can build housing that can accommodate those facing displacement. >> reporter: they used the city's new anti-displacement housing preference to ensure locals get a better chance at winning the house lottery. >> i wanted to make sure that when this property was built, we had people from this neighborhood who live in this place. >> reporter: of the 98 units in this complex, 20 are reserved

where apartment residents found themselves the victims of the latest instance of bay area smash and grab robbery. smash as in breaking car windows and grab as in stealing items. >> the police officers told us it was about 15 cars in this complex that were broken into. and items stolen. >> police told them 19 cars and other complexes were broken into this morning. in march, the windows of 24 cars in fremont were smashed. some developing news. the detwiler fire is moving away from yosemite national park. but smoke is filling the park and there are warnings about respiratory issues. so what does that mean if you have a trip planned there soon?

he here's our report. >> reporter: that just shows how much smoke is covering the yosemite valley, smoke from the detwiler fire is bringing hazy conditions and unhealthy air quality. the vibrant views of yosemite are barely visible, as smoke from the fire blocks the park's most famous views. while visitors are still coming from all over the world to snap a shot, it's not the sight they expected. >> that's why we came here. we planned this for quite a while. to see all this haze from the fires is disappointing. >> reporter: flames from the fire are about 50 miles from the valley floor, causing hundreds of people, including 50 park employees, to evacuate their homes. >> we have temporary housing set up in the park. we do have employee housing in the park and have been able to accommodate most. >> reporter: the fire also damaged a transmig line.

pg&e says the power is now back up in the park. >> after we lost that transmission line due to fire, we placed some mobile generators in the area. >> reporter: park rangers say with the recent closures of highway 49 and highway 140, roads often filled with crowds are unusually quiet. >> we do have a little less visitation than normal. >> where's the nose at? >> reporter: visitors can expect the smoky air as the blaze continues to burn. the park is fully operating. high bay area 140 to yosemite is open to travelers. but those already at the park are making the best of it. >> you can see it barely. >> reporter: natalie granda, "abc7 news." tomorrow morning, muni begins partial subway shutdowns to test new trains. metro will close all day on weekends and will shut down at

jimmy kimmel says billy is doing well just three months after undergoing open heart surgery. the late night host posted this update today. oh, look at that smile. he says that billy is three months old today and doing great. thanks for all your love and support and remind your congress people that every kid deserves the care billy got. he revealed that billy was born with congenital heart disease in may. you can watch his show every weeknight at 11:35 on "abc7 news." americans eat about 3 billion pizzas every year. there are the mom and pop pizzarias.

worst of the bay area cleaners. >> drycleaners tend to operate in their own little world. most of us use the one in our neighborhood, but is that a good idea? in some areas, there's a drycleaner on every corner, so competition keeps prices down and quality up. right? not always. >> we found just astoundingly large price differences from place to place. >> reporter: that's kevin brazler. he's with bay area consumers checkbook. they found you don't get more just because you pay more. >> people just don't shop around. they go down to the corner and dump the clothes off. some people have a sense of their getting ripped off. but for the most part, people just don't shop around at all. >> reporter: one of the most highly rated drycleaners is glenn park cleaners. it gets good reviews for price and service. michelle lynch is a customer. >> they're efficient.
