and good morning, everyone. i'm carolyn tyler. thanks for joining us on this sunday, july 23rd. let's start with a quick look at the weather with our meteorologist lisa argen. >> good morning to you. low clouds and fog surging through the golden gate this morning. it's a low deck, though, so it means it's dense. we have fog over into the east bay, but we're still looking at some very warm temperatures inland again today, as you can see, 24-hour change, 5 to 10 degrees warmer inland than yesterday. so with the warmer start, we'll still see numbers well above average in our east bay valleys. 62 in hayward, mild 63 in fremont. 54 in novato. we have coastal fog this morning. the marathon, cool temperatures

for runners. wide range, my noontime, by the afternoon, upper 90s inland. don't look for much clearering at the coast. we'll talk about a couple very cool days coming up in the next few minutes. carolyn. >> all right, lisa. we're following developing news of a wreck that injured several people in san jose overnight. the crash happened around 12:15 this morning on i-280 near mclaughlin avenue. highway patrol officers say four people were taken to the hospital. two with life-threatening injuries. investigators have determined there were multiple collisions involving five cars. some pedestrians were also struck while helping with that first crash. so far, it's unclear whether drugs or alcohol played a role. this morning, barriers are going up along the golden gate bridge. san francisco marathon runners will race across the span for the first time ever, northbound lanes will be closed. here's a look at the race route

in green. these roads will be closed from 7:00 this morning until noon today. the areas in pink show where traffic can cross, but only when there's a break in the race. abc 7 news reporter alyssa harrington has a preview. >> on your mark, get set, go. and move your car before it gets towed. signs like this are posted all over san francisco to clear the course for the 40th annual san francisco marathon. this year, more runners than ever are expected to attend. >> this is the biggest year, the biggest san francisco marathon we have ever had. when the first one ran in 1977, we had just under 1,000 runners. now we have 27,500 runners joining us. >> to prepare, organizers put up barriers. sponsors put up tents. port-a-potties line the embarcadero. even if you're not running, closures will affect traffic. they'll close all northbound lanes from 6:00 to 9:00 a.m. to

let runners cross. this is for safety reasons and concerns following terror attacks in europe where drivers have intentionally hit crowds of people. >> runner safety is our number one priority, and spectator safety is our number one priority and we're working tirelessly year round and up to and through race day to make sure we're doing all we can. >> organizers say they're already preparing for next year. alyssa harrington, abc7 news. >> thousands of commuters are experiencing what's going to be a really tough weekend routine for quite a while because san francisco's muni metro subway is closed to test new trains. abc7 news was at muni's embarcadero station yesterday as passengers were forced upstairs to market street to catch shuttle buses. they connect with light rail trains at westporten for the lines and church street for the

j and n. riders have been sharing their displeasure about it. >> i'm happy that we have new trains but for 20 more days of thissish 30 days of this going on, it's going to beridiculous. >> been a frustrating adventure with the whole thing. >> you're now looking at one of the new trains tested at west port portal. muni wants to make sure they work properly. you could ride one of the new trains as early as september. >> autumn leaps forward in terms of reliability. great passenger information systems. it's exciting. >> muni will close the subway during evenings after rush hour ends and on weekends from now until mid-august. authorities have recovered the body of a missing boater who vanished near tomales bay last week. that's according to the family of 70-year-old charles friend. the beloved and longtime owner of the tomales bay oyster

company. yesterday afternoon, the marin county sheriff recovered the body near where friend disappeared tuesday. colleagues reported him missing after finding his empty boat. friend is remembered as a colorful, well liked member of the tight knit tomales bay community. there are no signs of foul play in the death of actor john heard, according to a statement from the santa clara county medical examiner's office. heard died at a palo alto hotel friday where he was recovering from back surgery performed at stanford medical center. heard is best known for his roles in the "home alone" movies and the "sopranos" he was 71 years old, survivd by three children. oakland police have not said if two recent robberies of film crews at gunpoint are linked to one another. the first happened last monday. the second on friday. one of the victims describes what happened. >> i pulled the car inside of

the vacant lot. we were shooting in, and at that point, two armed men crawled under a hole in the fence that was hidden behind a homeless man's encampment, and they chased after us, barbarian style. >> someone also broke into both the crew's van and suv. the thieves ran off after the crew's security guard drew his gun. they made off with about $25,000 worth of gear. developing news from san jose where police are looking for the person who fired a shot at a drive-in movie theater last night. no one was hurt by the gunfire. police found a gun casing but no victim. and no suspect. this morning, police in two east bay cities are investigating a series of smash and grab car thefts. 51 cars were broken into friday alone. abc 7 news reporter leslie

brinkley has our story from brentwood. >> the crime spree started when 17 cars lined up near the front door of this hampton inn in brentwood had their passenger windows smashed, some time before 3:00 a.m. friday. james bennett found his truck and his daughter's camaro were hit. >> they just smashed it open and took and opened these. they opened this. they opened this. and they absolutely, you know, they absolutely ransacked every bit of it. okay. and when they couldn't find anything, they just went to the next car and did the same thing. >> a desk clerk heard a car alarm and called police. unfortunately, there were no surveillance cameras at all up at this hotel, trained on the parking lot. across the way is an auto supply store. police intend to look at that video. >> they're getting what cash they can get. and then they steal the car. the lexus. >> police say a 1999 four-door lexus with california license

plate 4jpx560 was stolen from the hotel and driven to livermore. by 4:30 a.m., livermore police were inundated with 911 calls about car alarms going off in apartment complexes. >> they located between the three streets, we located a grand total of 34 vehicles that had been burglarized. >> all 34 break-ins occurred in just 30 minutes, prompting livermore police to say they're looking for an out of town crew of three to four suspects. earlier this month, 13 cars were targeted near interstate 680. police offered a reminder. >> there is anything in view, try to hide it. lock it up, bring it inside. >> especially overnight. in brentwood, i'm leslie brinkley, abc7 news. >> the family of a missing man is on a mission to make a dangerous stretch of coastal highway more safe. richard moss dispeered just before memorial day and a search for him is happening near

montero state beach. demonstrators were at the beach yesterday calling for more safety barriers along highway 1. abc7 news reporter cornell bernard has our story from pacifica. >> this group of demonstrators standing along highway 1 near montero state beach was hard to miss, and the was the point. >> just being out here today, we have a lot of visibility. >> this group led by dan moss wants more safety barriers built on this stretch. barriers which may have saved the life of dan's son richard, who vanished while driving to work on may 25th. his body was never found. a tire believed to be from his car was located off the side of this cliff last week. >> there could be any number of reasons why richard's car crashed and went over the ever. if there was a barrier there, he may have had to get a new car, maybe go to the hospital, but the result is death. >> she basically went over the cliff. >> 20-year-old rose died one night last september when her car crashed off highway 1.

>> i definitely believe to a high extent her life could have been saved as well as richard's. >> glenda's fiance died on highway 1 in 2004, before the birth of their child. >> i feel like this is an issue that's going to be an issue until we sort of get a response from caltrans. >> caltrans says it's reviewing the matter. >> not just a matter of we can go out there and set up some barriers overnight with no preparation. there's a lot of, even with temporary barriers, still some procedures you have to follow. >> until permanent barriers are built, they want to see temporary guardrails put up as soon as possible. >> well, we've got a lot of events today. chief among them the marathon. what about the running weather? >> well, here in san francisco, we have a lot of fog. it will get more patchy as the morning goes along, but boy, a chilly start. elsewhere, we're in the 60s from our sutro tower camera, we have temperatures in the upper 50s. it's going to be another warm one. cooling at the coast, and in the

and worked with members of the transport union of america. he also spent several hours working as a starbucks barista in dublin. he said it's all part of the, quote, in your shoes initiative. crews are starting to turn the corner on the largest wildfire in california. just outside yosemite national park. containment at the detwiler fire is up to 40% this morning. roughly 3,000 firefighters worked overnight to put a control line near coulterville. more evacuations were lifted yesterday. reporter corey james from our sister station in fresno has the latest from a community meeting for evacuees. >> bottles of water passed out and fans moving inside mariposa high school, but the lack of water did not bother residents. they were here for a community meeting to learn more about the devastating detwiler fire that

stormed through their town. they had detailed maps pinpointing areas in the clear and areas that still need more work. suzette lives in mormon hills. she said in her lifetime, a wildfire here has never gotten that bad. >> i lived here during the telegraph fire, and this is huge. this is one for the record books. >> so far, the fast moving blaze is now 40% contained. and it has burned more than 75,000 acres. leaving many people like this woman, returning to nothing but rubble and debris where her home once sat. the raging blaze is responsible for destroying 60 homes and 63 other structures, but the chief of mariposa said it would have been a lot worse if it wasn't for it 500,000 gallons of retardant dropped in one day and the residents. >> the fire burned right up to their homes. because they had great defensive space around it, the fire was able to lay down so firefighters

could get in there and knock that stuff down. >> terry is grateful for the work the more than 4500 firefighters have been putting in because he says it has saved not only homes but also lives. >> without them coming from all over the state, putting their lives on the line, sasking our town, saving our homes, i mean, without that resource, we would not be standing here. >> reporting in mariposa, corey james, abc7 news. flames came very close to homes in san bernardino county after a wildfire broke out in highland yesterday afternoon. firefighters moved quickly both on the ground and in the air. they stopped that fire before it reached any structures. another blaze broke out a few miles away. and firefighters faced 90-degree heat as they fought both of those fires. investigators have not said what sparked the fires. many kids don't want to hear the words back to school in july, but some youngsters are now equipped for the inevitable.

abc7 news was at san mateo medical center yesterday where 120 kids got free back packs loaded with school supplies. the golden gate harley davidson owners group organized the giveaway. >> as you can see, makes a lot of people happy. we're really happy to do this. we're going to continue to do this as long as we can. >> local businesses donated cash, backpacks, and supplies for the kids. a familiar face for giants fans has returned home. >> pablo sandoval. >> abc7 was at municipal stadium in san jose when fans cheered pablo sandoval when he went to bat for the first time for the giants minor league team. he left the giants for the red sox after the 2014 world series. one man calls himself a superfan of the panda, and he's willing

to look past what happened a few years ago. >> it was a little bit of a rough exit, for sure, but you know, let bygones be bygones and welcome back to the bay. he helped bring three championships to the bay area. >> fans cheered again when sandoval singled. the panda signed a minor league deal with the giants after being released by boston. happening today, two world class soccer teams will face off at levi's stadium. manchester united and real madrid are competing for the champions cup. the powerhouse teams are drawing huge crowds to santa clara. at least 60,000 tickets have been sold. all the hotels near levi's stadium are sold out. you can watch the game live on our sister station, espn, it begins at 2:00 this afternoon. it's sunday morning. it's all about the microclimates

today as we look at live doppler 7. you'll notice the fog has moved to the east bay. it's situated all the way along the coast. just a quarter mile visibility, half moon bay. going to bring cooler to parts of the bay area. check out the foggy golden gate. yes, this is dense fog here. we still have that big dome of high pressure that's keeping so warm inland for another day. 57 in san francisco. it's 60 in oakland and 63, mountain view. san jose checking in at 68. gilroy, 55. just 54 with that fog. can't see much here from mt. tam because of the blanket of low clouds. 57, santa rosa. 61 in napa. with the 60s still in concord and livermore. upper elevations, inland valleys still retaining that warmth, as much as ten degrees warmer than we were at this time yesterday. we have a trough situations in the pacific northwest. it's going to bring some big-time cooling tomorrow and tuesday. hot inland, cool coast today, with that wide range. we're talking 60s to near 100,

and then looking much cooler for the beginning of the week. so let's take a look at your forecast tomorrow. barely a 90 out there. maybe 91 in livermore. 74 in oakland. as we go to tuesday, very little change. notice we have the greens and yellows, but then by wednesday, it looks like the heat begins to build again inland. so keep thatind mind if you're planning your week. the fog will certainly be right along the shoreline today at times. then it breaks away. we'll call it just peeks of sunshine from time to time. that will keep temperatures in the low to mid 60s here. so ocean temperature, 57 degrees. so certainly good running weather for the marathon. temperatures now in the 50s. it will stay that way through about 9:00. we'll begin to get some sunshine. and by 11:00, we'll be in the 60s. south bay numbers, a warm one. 90 in san jose. you're cooler today, you'll feel the breeze, 80 in redwood city. look at the fog here from the richmond, the sunset, and looking at 64 right along the coast in the north bay, you get

the southerly surge. much cooler for you. look at that, 86 today, sonoma. 87, san rafael. near east bay, nice day with upper 70s. oakland and berkeley. you head inland, a little change here. still flirting with 100 degrees. maybe a couple degrees cooler. and the accuweather seven-day forecast, you download our app and you can continue to see the trend of cooler weather from some spots today. everywhere tomorrow, into tuesday. and then we're looking at partly cloudy skies as we could get a little subtropical moisture move into the area. that keeps it interesting. could see some thunderstorms in the sierra nevada. otherwise, you notice the numbers coming up again thursday and friday, it's going to heat up, it looks to be inland again. yeah. that's the way it goes. >> thank you, lisa. just ahead, a magnificent sight in the sky this weekend. and this could soon be a new world record.

nine months after a livermore couple purchased new living room furniture, things are looking sparse. you have heard, things aren't meant to be. that may be the case. michael finney explains. >> this wasn't what karen smith had in mind when she and her husband purchased a new sofa and recliner. instead of brand-new furniture, she has two patio chairs in their place. it wasn't the delivery that was the problem. it's what was delivered. >> the first sofa, the stitching

on it started to come out. it had not been, like, tacked, backstitched and it all started coming out within two weeks. >> lazy boy didn't hesitate the replace the sofa. unfortunately, karen had issues with the replacement too. >> i noticed there were wear spots right through the leather. it took the color off and all. >> lazy boy promised to replace the cushions. but karen said there were numerous delays in the delivery. one appointment was canceled. then the wrong cushions were delivered. the stitching on the cushions were different. >> i mean, you don't pay for a matching set and pay the money we paid to have it all look different. that would look real tacky. >> the last straw was when the gear in the recliner broke. she called 7 on your side and we contacted la-z-boy. it told us once made aware of the situation, we were able to rapidly come to a solution that was acceptable to mrs. smith.

sutro tower camera, it's a pretty morning. we have the coastal clouds. 50s to 60s. by noontime, all the way up to the upper 80s. another hot day inland, about 10 degrees above average, but cooler gets under way today in parts of the bay area. i'll tell you where in a few minutes. carolyn. >> lisa, thank you. breaking news in texas this morning. police in san antonio have found eight people dead in what they call a human trafficking case. investigators say the victims were in a tractor trailer parked in the stifling heat. dozens of people rescued from the truck, including children, were severely dehydrated and have been hospitalized. police say the truck did not have air conditioning. the driver is in custody. surveillance video shows other drivers picking up people from the truck overnight. the u.s. department of homeland security is involved in the investigation. president donald trump is trying to shift the focus back to his agenda this morning.

vacation. his name is jake, and he took his family kayaking on the river in kauai when his kayak bumped the wasp nest. he pushed his family away from the nest and then capsized his own kayak for protection. but those wasps were determined to protect their turf. swarming the utah man, stinging him several times. he was unaware he was allergic to wasp stings until he went into shock and stopped breathing. >> kids were like, daddy, breathe. breathe. because we had to get him to breathe. >> well, two women nearby grabbed the 6'8" tall shauf and brought him to shore. medics gave him a shot of adrenaline. he regained consciousness and has recovered from that attack. >> residents of a phoenix suburb have banded together to patrol their neighborhood streets at night. they're on the lookout for scorpions. members of this neighborhood group in surprise, arizona, are

armed with spider spray and black lights. the nightly routine can take out anywhere from 30 to 300 scorpions a night. volunteers have mapped areas that need to be tended to by the exterminators. >> i realized how many people were having a large problem with the scorpions. we thought, well, something has to be done. so why not us? >> why not. >> their nightly routine has turned into good exercise for the neighbors. scorpion stings are typically harmless, but some species can inflict fatal ones. the wife of a michigan police officer is turning her local department's old uniforms into toys that can help children cope with traumatic situations. eva gray is busy snipping and stitching old dress shirts and pants from the police department into teddy bears. police shirts become coats for the bears. buttons become eyes. pieces of the pants help shape

the stuffed animals. officers take the bears out on patrol, handing them to children they encounter during calls. in times of critical incidents, you know, children become very upset. and sometimes they can get the view that the police might be against them, and we want to make sure that they know that the police are there to help. well, this all started when the department asked officers to come up with a creative way to recycle their old uniforms. and one officer took the idea home to eva, and she came up with those teddy bears. still ahead on abc 7 morns, drone racing inside the palace of fine arts. why pilots are hoping to port takes off with virtual reality. and here is a live look from our mt. tam cam. right now, it's rather foggy. there are a lot of low clouds. but it's going to be hot inland, cooler days are ahead, however.

today inland. here's a look at what you can expect. upper 90s again for concord. you'll notice a big cooldown tomorrow into tuesday, you'll see temperatures even below average. but yes, just like we have been doing the past couple weeks, the numbers go back up. in fact, by the end of the week, well above average. as we look outside, check out the golden gate bridge. you can't even see it there. we're looking at not only the low clouds and fog, it is chilly out there. and it should be foggy for most of the day. the fog pulling back from time to time. here's live doppler 7. you can see the fog footprint here over into the east bay. we have a quarter mile visibility from half moon bay, but the fog has moved into parts of the bay. it is shallow. we still have a big dome of high pressure overhead that is pushing down on the atmosphere. i want you to get caught up on the tropics. fernanda, greg, now hillary. you can see it just off the coast of acapulco. this is expected to become a
