we begin with breaking news in san jose where police have surrounded santana row after reports of shots fired. >> matt keller live for us near the scene. this is at olson and winchester. matt. >> reporter: reggie, a lot has happened since i saw you about a half hour ago. about five minutes ago, san jose police took down the crime scene tape. they're now opening this up for people to come down. they do have a section that is closed. i'm told they have one person in

custody. we're also told by san jose police that this is an incident of shots fired. they were trying to find out where the shots were fired. we have not heard about any victims so far. they have not been able to find anybody who was impacted by the shots being fired this morning. now, we did talk with a pete's employee and she talked to us about what officers told her. >> there were shots fired at an apartment. they're trying to secure the area and we don't go in until they do. >> and they just allowed those employees to enter into their business. that is about, i would say, about 50 yards away from where we were standing, where the police tape was at this morning. that police tape is now down. the command post is being broken down. we're told this is now a code-4 situation. that means it's an all clear situation for the police officers here on the scene. it was a very intense scene this morning. of course, santana row is a popular shopping place. there are a lot of apartment

find the body. a hiker called it in at 6:30. but emergency crews didn't find the body until 10:00 last night. it is a male victim. he was found in a remote area of the anthony chabot regional park near the redwood canyon golf course in castro valley. the fire department was on scene and declared he was dead. they haven't identified him yet. the coroner will get to work today on finding out who this man is and what happened to hem. still so much more to come in this mystery that started yesterday. reporting live in castro valley, amy hollyfield, abc7 news. >> thank you. new details about jared kushner's testimony that will happen later today before the senate intelligence commitsy. kushner, president trump's son-in-law and adviser, has released an 11-page statement saying that he met four times with russian officials during the campaign and the presidential transition. even so, he insists there was no collusion. he blames an assistant for

filling out his security clearance questionnaire and omitting the foreign contacts. >> developing news. firefighters are making significant progress in fighting a fire just outside yosemite national park. the detwiler fire is now 45% contained this morning. more evacuation orders were lifted yesterday in mariposa. square miles and has destroyed more than 100 buildings. at least 60 of those are homes. a suspected arsonist is in custody accused of setting a fire at a homeless encampment in west oakland. oakland firefighters tweeted this photo of the fire yesterday. the encampment is at fifth and market streets under the 880 freeway. it took crews over an hour to put out the flames. people in the camp helped police identify the person they say started the fire. nobody got hurt. at the live desk this morning, we're tracking a police shooting that happened in new orleans. one officer was hit. he is in the hospital right now

after being shot in the leg. and a search is under way for the gunman. investigators say the officer was working an off-duty detail overnight. he was sitting in his personal vehicle when someone in an suv drove by and fired a round into the officer's car. investigators say the officer was in uniform when he was hit. he is expected to be okay. happening today, the white house says president trump will meet with people he called victims of obamacare. mr. trump has been pressing republican senators to pass a new health care bill before taking their august recess. last week, he said lawmakers shouldn't leave until the bill is on his desk. the gop has not been able to secure enough votes to repeal and replace the affordable care act. >> thousands of you have signed an online patrician fighting new dog management rules add the golden gate national management area. the proposed rules would require dogs to be on a leach in many parts of marin, san francisco, and san jose counties.

they want to protect native plants and wildlife. opponents say their dogs need to be off a leash and need somewhere to run around. right now, it's just 160,000 signatures short. i think we're looking at the wrong video right there. it asks the secretary of the interior to immediately withdraw the proposed rule. >> the 40th annual san francisco marathon is being called the most successful one yet. a record 27,500 runners took to the streets sunday. cornell bernard has our story. >> reporter: finishing the 40th annual san francisco marathon earned you a medal and some bragging rights. >> i did it, hello. i'm done. >> 39-year-old jorge maravilla jumped for joy after winning the marathon with a time of 2:28. >> we all share one common thing, and that is to get to the finish line.

you're watching abc7 mornings. welcome back. look here at your screens. emergency crews in arizona rescued 17 people from a flash flood. happened around 5:30 yesterday near tucson after a day of rain. and we have highlighted there one of the people being pulled to safety. a 4-year-old boy was among those rescued. you can see just how rough the water was. authorities say hikers must be careful this time of year because of flash flooding in that area. crews worked throughout the night to get everyone out of that water. >> the search is on for seven people wanted for a gang rape in oakland. police say it happened in east oakland friday night around 10:00 p.m. at 83rd avenue and a street. that's two blocks from the new highland academy elementary school. the victim taken to the hospital. police aren't releasing any more details at this time. san francisco mayor ed lee has a few more dollars to spend

this morning. chronicle reports he just got a $24,000 a year pay raise. the san francisco chronicle reports lee's pay increase is more than double what the average city worker received this year. he's already the highest paid mayor in the state. the raise brings lee's salary to $326,000 per year. unlike city workers, elected officials receive raises every five years, set by the city's civil service commision and based on the pay of similar positions in other bay area counties. so in comparison, the city's police chief, bill scott, makes $323,000. and the fire chief rec $317,000 a year. california governor jerry brown makes $190,000 a year. >> this morning, we're learning about the last interview with actor john heard. in it, you're going to hear him say he elected to undergo back surgery at stanford medical center so he could get back to

work acting. he was interviewed by an actress for a podcast before the procedure last wednesday. the 71-year-old spoke at length about his love for acting and spoke of his older sister and mother, both of them actors who encouraged him to consider acting as a career. >> my mother said, why don't you get off your butt and do something? and i said, like what? and she said, i don't know. something. you know, you have to do something. my mother always said, john, you have to take an interest in things. >> heard is best remembered for playing the father in the "home alone" movies. he was found dead friday afternoon in a palo alto hotel room, recovering from a surgery. >> in today's "gma" first look, a wisconsin family is warning tourists visiting mexico to be extra cautious. >> this comes after their daughter died after drinking at a resort bar. >> in this morning's "gma" first look, after just two hours in playa del carmen, mexico, 20-year-old abbey conor ended up unconscious in the resort pool.

but that situation is now over. san jose police, though, do remain on the scene. they're talking with somebody here. they have two people in custody. now, we just spoke with the lieutenant about what happened. >> we were able to determine that there was a bullet that had passed through from one unit to another. we evacuated several units and then we were able to make contact with the one where we believe the shots had come from. >> yeah, the call came in as shots fired. no one was hurt. police blocked off a big section of santana row. they have taken those two people into custody from the condo where they believe the shots were fired from. the two men are being cooperative. this is still early in the investigation, and officers are questioning those men right now to determine if this was an accidental shooting. some businesses were impacted this morning. peet's coffee was closed. was supposed to open up at 5:00 a.m. they're now back open which is good for them and their customers, and here, all the streets are now back open.

reporting live in san jose, matt keller, abc7 news. tracking this new story overnight. a medical breakthrough. researchers this morning say there is new hope for aids patients. their progress was announced this morning at an aids conference in paris. they say a south african girl born with the virus kept her infection in remission for more than eight years after she stopped taking anti-hiv medication. she had been given shots every couple months instead of taking daily pills. treatment began when she was 2 months old and stopped 40 weeks later. the evidence shows early treatment can lead to long-term remission and if it lasts, potentially a cure. current treatments keep hiv under control, but they have to be taken for the rest of the patient's life. this could change that. >> that is amazing. >> jared kushner has released parts of his testimony this morning prior to his meeting with the senate intelligence committee. in it, he insists he did not

collude with russian officials. kushner is the first of president trump's inner circle to testify about moscow and the presidential campaign. he's the son-in-law of the president and also his adviser. kushner said he met four times with russian officials and nothing improper happened. the white house is hoping his testimony will be the beginning of the end for this russia story. >> i'm confident that tomorrow when jared kushner speaks, and i'll keep my fingers crossed in saying this to you, it will probably a be the last time he has to talk about russia. >> kushner is blaming an assistant for not filling out foreign contacts on his security clearance form. a grass fire that burned near a college in gilroy is 50% contained. it broke out yesterday afternoon. quick action by fire crews stopped the flames from spreading where. the fire is burning near castro valley road and santa teresa boulevard in southern santa krara county. no structures were threatened.

calfire called in water dropping helicopters and airplanes in the first few hours of the fire. >> this morning, three firefighters are recovering from minor injuries in southern california. the l.a. times reports they were hurt while battling this brush fire in lavern. that fire has burned 40 acres. it began on a hill side near homes yesterday. firefighters say it's about 50% contained and voluntary evacuations have now been lifted. >> this morning, milpitas police are searching for a man who reportedly exposed himself at a park. happened thursday afternoon around 4:30 at augustine park. two minors saw the man walking around with his pants open. the man then took off running. he was last seen getting into a four-door dark sedan. he's described as middle eastern, 30 years old, 5'10" with brown hair and a beard. >> good samaritans are among the four people injured in a chain reaction crash that involved at

least five different cars. all began when a car crashed into a wall on the shoulder of northbound 280 in san jose early yesterday morning. >> another traffic collision occurred where a honda accord came and hit the vehicle just prior to that second collision, some people had pulled over to try to assist the first collision and gotten out of their cars, and were then hit by the car that was involved in the second collision. >> what's worse, after that, yet another car crashed into some of the vehicles in the first accident. two of the people injured are in critical condition. the pilot of a single-engine plane is recovering from injuries he received after crashing in san jose. it took off from one runway yesterday and crashed moments later onto a parallel runway. the pilot, the only person onboard. that plane heavily damaged. the faa and ntsb are

investigating. >> southwest airlines says their operations are back to normal following a weekend computer issue. it caused lengthy delays for southwest flights yesterday. passengers told abc 7 news check-in slowed to a crawl. >> we should be compensated. we're not sure if we're going to make our flight and after this interview, we're going to sprint to our curminal to see if our plane is still here. >> a spokesperson said the problem was fixed after a few hours. no other airlines or airports were affected. >> a warning for those who take san francisco's muni metro subway. tonight is the first week night they're going to shut down to test new trains. before that can happen, the new trains need to go through rigorous testing to make sure they work properly with the subway's automatic control system. muni will close the subway at 9:30, and on weekends until august 20th. all right, let's take a look. here's a look at the bay bridge.

welcome back. federal officials say a florida man will be charged today in connection with the death of nine people inside a sweltering semitruck in texas. the semi was in a walmart parking lot in san antonio. authorities were alerted by a store employee who became suspicious when someone in the semi asked him for water. nearly 40 people were in the trailer, but when police arrived, but more had been packed in. >> video from the store, we found that there were a number of vehicles that came in and picked up a lot of the folks that were in that trailer that survived the trip. >> yeah, nine people did not survive. nearly 20 people are hospitalized this morning. authorities say this is a case of human trafficking. investigators have identified the semi driver as 60-year-old jamesb bradley jr. of florida. >> the final stages of a british family hoping to bring their

this week. >> let's look at what's happening weather wise. >> hey, everybody. nice seeing this this morning, if you're cheeging for cooler conditions. especially inland. it was pretty hot most of the weekend. beautiful colors, too. nice look at the clouds, mt. diablo in the distance. slower sunshine, cooler breeze. mild tomorrow with warming again wednesday, and it looks like it's going to get hot with 100s late in the week and holding for the weekend. here's one of the changes. a small craft advisory continued overnight through 9:00 this evening. the yellow, you see all the way through the delta, and the marine layers up around 1800 feet. it's climbing over into the east bay. look at these numbers compared to where we were yesterday. about 10 to 15 degrees cooler with mid 80s in san ramon. walnut creek, 84 there. warm spots, antioch at 88. let's head to the north bay, oorths area seeing a dramatic drop.

and i'm an arborist with i'pg&e in the sierras. the drought in california has killed trees on a massive scale. any of those trees that fail into power lines could cause a wildfire or a power outage. public safety is the main goal of our program. that's why we're out removing these hundreds of thousands of hazard trees. having tools and technology gives us a huge edge to identify hazard trees. my hope is that the work we're performing allows that these forests can be sustained and enjoyed by the community in the future. together, we're building a better california.
