canyon golf course in castro valley in a very remote area of heavy brush, they said. in the anthony chabot regional park. east bay regional park district police are handling the investigation. at this point, they don't know who this man is or what happened to him. the coroner will start the work today of identifying him and figuring out how he died. they say he was found in heavy brush. it was very difficult to get to. they haven't said how laungs they think he was there. reporting live in castro valley, amy hollyfield, abc7 news. >> thank you. new this morning in the south bay, san jose police questioning two people after reports of a shooting overnight. they were talking to two men from the condo where they believe the shots were fired from. both are cooperating. this is still early in the investigation. officers are trying to determine if this was an accidental shooting. we're learning new details about jared kushner and his meetings with russian officials during the presidential

campaign. the details are provided by kushner himself. he released a statement this morning prior to his testimony before the nat intelligence committee. in the 11-page statement, kushner, president trump's son-in-law and senior adviser, said he met four times with russian officials during the campaign and that no collusion occurred. >> happening today, the white house says president trump is going to meet with people he calls victims of obamacare. mr. trump has been pressuring republican senators to pass a new health care bill before taking their august recess. last week, he said lawmakers shouldn't leave until that bill is on his desk. the gop has not been able to secure enough votes to repeal and replace the affordable care act. >> developing news. firefighters making significant progress in fighting a fire just outside yosemite national park. the detwiler fire is 45% contained this morning. more evacuation orders were lifted yesterday in mariposa. the fire has burned nearly 119 square miles and has destroyed

at least 100 buildings. >> an 18-year-old woman is in jail accused of driving under the influence in a wreck that killed her younger sister. that crash was caught on camera. a warning, the video we're about to watch is hard to see. chp says the teenage driver was live streaming on social media when she swerved off the roadway and crashed through a barbed wire fence. two 14-year-old girls in the back were not wearing seat belts. they were ejected from the vehicle and one girl died. >> i know i'm going to jail for life, i understand that. >> that's horrible. the other passenger thrown from the car was badly injured. the driver is charged with vehicular manslaughter and dui. >> search is on for seven people wanted for a gang rape in oakland. police say it happened in east oakland friday night around 10:00 p.m. at 83rd avenue and a street. that's two blocks from the new highland academy elementary

school. the victim was taken to a hospital. police are not releasing any further details at this time. >> a suspected arsonist is in custody accused of setting a fire at a homeless encampment in oakland. big flames. oakland firefighters tweeted this photo out early yesterday. the encampment is at fifth and market streets under the 880 freeway. it took crews an hour to put out the flames. people in the camp helped police identify the person they say started the fire, and nobody got hurt. thousands of people have signed an online petition fighting new dog management rules at the golden gate national recreation area. the proposed rule would require dogs to be on a leash in marin, san francisco, and san mateo counties. park officials want to protect native plants and wildlife, but opponents say their dogs need to be off leash and have some space to run around. the online petition is close to its goal of 40,000 signatures. right now, it is at -- just 42 signatures away. so very close.

secretary of interior ryan zinke to immediately withdraw the proposed rule. >> emergency crews in arizona rescued 17 people from a flash flood yesterday near tucson after a day of rain. we're highlighting one of the people being pulled to safety. a 4-year-old boy is among those who got rescued. you can see how rough the water is. authorities say hikers have to be careful this time of year because of the possibility of flash flooding. crews worked overnight to get everyone out of the water. >> right now, there's a push to get more electric cars on the road. the bay area going solar to add more charging stations. >> senator john mccain revealed he's battling brain cancer. now an encouraging update on his fight. >> let's look at the hooes bay hills. look at all that fog rolling through. we're keeping you up to date on weather and traffic throughout the break. the break. we'll have abc7 now on the sides

weiwei. those are structures that form over water. one family in the bay had to be rescued but everyone is okay. that's good news. quite a sight there. let's look at the golden gate bridge. quite a sight as the fog is starting to lower and take over the bridge. going to be foggy all the way through the rest of the morning commute. on the water, breezy north of the bay bridge. all the way through 9:00. out and about, grab some sunscreen. not going to be too hot, even if you're exercising. temperatures running from 52 in daly city, pacifica, to about 60 in redwood city and menlo park. and pretty much the same type of temperatures no matter where you're waking up. around the state, 80 in tahoe, 92 in yosemite. both plagues with the possibility of thunderstorms and poor air quality in the san joaquin valley. >> checking out the san mateo commute if you're driving across westbound 92, i did just see flashing lights if you look well off in the distance, looks like we may have something on the

this story pretty shocking and it's just coming in. we're tracking a chainsaw attack that happened in switzerland, and at least five people are hurt right now. two of those are in serious condition. police have given no possible motive for the attack but say this is not terror related. here's a picture of the scene that we just got. they're still looking for the man with the chainsaw. police believe he may be driving a volkswagen. many people are shocked. they say they did not expect this to happen in a normally very peaceful area of switzerland. reggie. >> we do have a nice photo to share with you of john mccain this morning. insenator tweeting this photo out of him enjoying the outdoors in arizona. mccain was diagnosed with brain cancer last week. he's vowed to be back at work in the senate soon. >> a heads-up for drivers in santa rosa. starting today, crews will be out applying a seal to 2.5 million square feet of city

streets. they're working on roads without potholes hoping to extend the life of the good streets. the project runs through august 4th. >> marin transportation officials plan to spend up to $163,000 to update traffic data and make improvements to certain areas. according to the marin ij, officials want to better understand how to alleviate congestion, specifically on highways 101 and 580. officials will monitor more than 130 locations around the county in september and october. san francisco mayor ed lee has a few more dollars to spend this morning. quite a few. the chronicle reports he just got a $24,000 a year pay raise. the san francisco chronicle reports the pay increase is more than double what the average city worker received this year. he's already the highest paid mayor in the state. so that raise brings his salary to $326,000 a year. i think that is going to surprise a lot of people. unlike city workers, elected officials receive raises every five years set by the city's

civil service commission and based on the pay of similar positions in other bay area counties. uncomparison, the police chief makes $323,000. so almost as much. the fire chief, $317,000. california governor jerry brown, quite a bit lower, $190,000 a year. okay, the 40th annual san francisco marathon being called one of the most successful yet. >> a record 27,500 runners hit the street yesterday. 39-year-old jorge maravilla and devon mcmahon won the men's and women's races respectively. >> we share one thing, to get to the finish line. i'm fortunate to be part of that community. >> two san francisco police officers ran in the marathon dressed in full uniform. they finished the race wearing 20-pound police belts. the department tweeted these pictures of the officers. they ran in honor of their fallen colleagues across the

fremont. in our inland east bay neighbors, 84 to 90. what you're going to notice is tomorrow is another mild day, and then the heat returns inland wednesday and gets really hot thursday. 100s there while we have 80s around the bay, maybe even 70s at the coast thursday and sunday. we know you didn't run, alexis. >> i did not run. i am a runner, though, and congratulations to those guys. that's a really impressive time for drew tuma and a couple of our other colleagues ran. if you got out there and finished it, that's a huge accomplishment. want to take you out to cordelia. we're looking better, westbound 80 near the truck scales got the all clear from the chp, no longer blocking with the collision, and speeds are starting to improve too. we're down to about 39 miles per hour at our worst point, we were at 14. things are looking better. a quick check at the bay bridge toll plaza. one of our only slow spots. i think everyone is on summer vacation except us. we do have metering lights on, but it's a light commute.

pretty stop and go. westbound 580, in the green, seven minutes. up to 26 minutes there for the san mateo bridge. and westbound 84, across the dumbarton bridge looking great at nine minutes if you want to use that as an alternate. >> thanks. more on our breaking news from san jose. dozens of people have been evacuated from a hotel because of a hazmat situation. >> his is happening on the extended stay america. matt keller is there now. >> i just got an update from firefighters. they say the substance that caused this hazmat is actually pepper spray. it was sprayed in the front of this lobby here. they evacuated the first floor of this building. probably about an hour and a half ago. 29 people evacuated from this building. the people on the second and third floor are told to shelter in place. these are the people who are evacuated. there's another extended stay america building right next to it, so those people are able to hang out in the lobby.

we're told only one person neated to be treated for the incident. they believe that man was around the pepper spray. he refused to be taken to the hospital. he was treated here on the scene. this has obviously caused a big scene. we had a big response from firefighters. they blocked off san ignacio avenue. that was blocked off. san jose police have some cones out and they're turning people around in the northbound direction. but we were told by firefighters that they expect the situation to be over soon because all these firefighters are going to be leaving. what's the next step here? well, they were told, the hotel was told by firefighters they need to clean it up before people will be allowed back into that building. so they need to hire a specialist to come out and do that, an environmental services company come out and clean the pepper spray up. once they do that, everyone can go back in the building. matt keller, abc 7 news. >> thank you. new this morning, researchers say there's new hope for aids patients. this is a huge story. it was announced at a conference

in paris. they said a south african girl born with hiv has been able to keep the virus in remission for more than eight years. that's after she stopped taking anti-hiv medication. she had been given shots every couple months instead of taking daily pills. treatment began when she was only 2 months old and stopped 40 weeks later. the evidence now shows early treatment can lead to long-term remission, and if it lasts, potentially a cure. >> happening now, jared kushner moments away from arriving to testify before the senate intelligence committee. here's a live picture from capitol hill. this is a camera that is waiting for him to walk up. he released parts of his testimony this morning and he insists he did not collude with russian officials. kushner is the first of president trump's inner circle to testify about contacts between moscow and the presidential campaign. kushner is the son-in-law of president trump and also his adviser. kushner said he met four times with russian officials and

nothing improper happened. the white house is hoping his testimony will be the beginning of the end of the russia story. >> i'm confident that tomorrow when jared kushner speaks and i'll keep my fings crossed in saying this, it will probably be the last time he has to talk about russia. >> kushner is blaming an assistant for not filling out foreign contacts on his security clearance form. developing news, federal officials say a florida man will be charged today in connection with the death of nine people inside a sweltering semi truck in texas. the semi was in a walmart parking lot in san antonio. authorities were alerted by a store employee who became suspicious when someone in the semi asked him for water. nearly 40 people were inside the trailer when police arrived. there had been more people packed in it. >> watching video from the store, we found that there were a number of vehicles that came in and picked up a lot of the folks that were in that trailer

that survived the trip. >> not only did those nine people die, but there are nearly 20 people hospitalized this morning. authorities say this is a case of human trafficking. investigators have identified the semi driver as 60-year-old james bradleyr. of florida. a grass fire that burned near gavilan college in gilroy is now 50% contained. the fire raced across 150 acres in 3 1/2 hours after it broke out yesterday afternoon. quick action by fire crews stopped the flames from spreading. the fire is burning near castro valley road and santa teresa boulevard in southern santa clara county. no structures are threatened. calfire called in water dropping helicopters and airplanes in the first few hours of the fire. they say they're lucky to have the manpower available given the other fires burning in the state. three firefighters are recovering this morning from minor injuries in southern california. the l.a. times reports they were hurt while battling a brush fire in larx verne. it has burned 40 acres.

began on a hillside near some homes yesterday afternoon. firefighters say the fire is about 50% contained. voluntary evacuations have now been lifted. >> this morning, we're learning about the last interview with actor john heard. in it, he said he elected to undergo back surgery at stanford medical center so he could return to work acting. he was interviewed by an actress for a podcast before the procedure happened last wednesday. the 71-year-old actor spoke at length about his love for the career and spoke of his older sister and mother, both of them were also actors who encouraged him to get into the business. >> my mother said why don't you get off your butt and do something. and i said, like what? and she said, i don't know. something. you know, you have to do something. my mother always said, you know, john, you have to take an interest in things. >> heard is best remembered for playing the father in the "home alone" movies. he was found dead friday afternoon in a palo alto hotel

room where he was recovering from the surgery. >> this morning, milpitas police are searching for a man who reportedly exposed himself at a park. happened thursday afternoon around 4:30 at augustine park. two minors saw the man walking around with his pants omen. the man then took off running. he was last seen getting into a four-door dark sedan. he's described as a middle eastern man, about 30 years old, 5'10", with brown hair and a beard. >> the pilot of a single engine plane is recovering from injuries he suffered after crashing at the reed view airport in san jose. the piper cherokee took off from one runway, crashed moments later onto a parallel runway. the pilot was the only person onboard. the plane was heavily damaged from the impact. now the faa and ntsb are investigating. >> southwest airlines says its operations are back to normal at oakland international airport this morning. following a weekend computer issue, networking problems

caused lengthy delays for southwest flights yesterday. passengers told abc 7 news check-in slowed to a crawl. >> we should be compensated. we're not sure if we're going to make our flight. after this interview, we're going to sprint to our terminal to see if our plane is still here. >> a southwest spokesperson said the problem was fixed after a few hours. no other airlines or airports were affected. >> a warning if you take muni. especially the metro subway. tonight is the first weekend muni is going to shut down to test their new trains. five new train cars are being prepped to go into service by the end of the year. before that can happen, the new trains need to go thru rigorous testing to make sure they work properly with the subway's automatic control system. muni is going to close the subway at 9:30 at night on week days and then they'll be closed completely on weekends. that's going to happen until august 20th. oh, you have to stop for a moment and look at this photo taken over the weekend. photographer louise rafael

following developing news in east bay. police are trying to figure out how a dead body ended up near a golf course. >> amy hollyfield is live near the redwood canyon golf course. >> the area where the body was found is very remote. east bay regional park district police are handling the case. it took officials 3 1/2 hours to locate the body. a hiker called it in at 6:30 last night, but emergency crews didn't find the body until 10:00. it is a male victim. he was found in a very remote area of the anthony chabot regional park near the redwood cannial golf course in castro valley. the fire department was on scene and declared that the victim was dead. they haven't identified him yet. the coroner will get to work today on finding out who this man is and what happened to him. so still so much more to come in this mystery. reporting live in castro valley, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> thank you.

new this morning in san j e jose, people are back inside their condo units at santana row after a shooting forced residents to evacuate overnight. no one got hurt. police are questioning two men from the condo where police officers believe the shots were fired from. from the live desk, a 20-minute storm ripped through maryland early this morning, and now the national weather service working to find out if it was a tornado, and we're just getting our first look at the damage in stevensville, located right near annapol annapolis. i'm watching this for the first time with you. the storm destroyed several homes. one was even set on fire. downed trees and power lines are strewn all over. at least 8,000 customers without power. one person was taken to the hospital, but that person is expected to be okay. the red cross right now helping out all of those in need. that story, boy, just coming in moments ago. also following new developments in this case, reggie.

let's talk about what's going on. it's going to be cooler today, and it's the cloud deck and marine layer bringing in some cooler weather and causing arrival delays into sfo. mainly sunny for the afternoon hours except at the coast. a cooler breeze will drop our temperatures. mild again tomorrow with warmer weather wednesday that will linger through the weekend. here's a look at what's going to happen with our cloud deck. it's back to the coast by noon. and there it's going to be really stubborn. it's pretty gray, just a few pockets of sunshine here and there while the rest of us are sunny this afternoon. look at these temperatures, below average in the south bay. 79, milpitas and sunnyvale to 81 at san jose to only 83 in gilroy and 65 down in santa cruz. 70 in millbrae. 75 at san mateo, and mid to upper 70s for the rest of the peninsula. hovering right near 60 along the peninsula coast today to 65 in downtown. south san francisco and sausalito at 66. 75 to about 79 through the north bay valleys. along the east bay shore, 69 at richmond, berkeley, 70.
