officials complete the investigation. we now turn to an about face in court. >> a guilty plea from the fiancee accused in the death of her husband to-be while kayaking on the hudson river. here's abc's adrian bankert. >> reporter: courtroom bombshell. the woman accused of murdering her fiance on a kayaking trip pleads guilty. angelique grasswald pleads to a lesser charge, avoiding life in prison. it was april, 2015, when graswald and her fiance vincent viafore went kayak being. she exhibited strange behavior during questioning, including doing yoga and hopscotch. at the center of the case, the kayak's missing drain plug, graswald admitted removing it.

good morning. i'm diane macedo. >> i'm kendis gibson. here's some of the top headlines we're following this tuesday on "world news now." the driver of the truck in the human trafficking tragedy in san antonio is facing the death penalty. ten people on that tractor-trailer have now died. james bradley told investigators that he didn't realize anyone was actually inside the 18-wheeler. the details ahead. charlie gard's parents have ended their legal battle to save his life. the 11-month-old is expected to die in just a few days. one of the strongest tornados to hit the state of maryland ripped across kent island on maryland's eastern shore. it began as a waterspout on the chesapeake bay before moving onto land. only one serious injury was reported.

former nba mvp derrick rose joins lebron james' supporting cast with the cavaliers. those are some of our top stories on this tuesday, july 25th. from abc news, this is "world news now." a good morning to you all. we begin this half hour with the deadly tragedy in texas. the man accused of driving a tractor-trailer full of people made his first court appearance on monday. he's now facing the death penalty or life in prison. and we're learning some more details from survivors of that fatal journey. >> one mexican man hospitalized in san antonio says the trailer was full of people with no water. he says he was so weak that he didn't even have the energy to run away. he also says that a lack of work forced him to make that desperate trip. abc's kenneth moten in san antonio. >> reporter: james bradley charged by being behind the wheel of that sweltering death trap with people could face the

death penalty. as he entered court in shackles, prosecutors revealing new details of the horrors inside this tractor-trailer. >> they are in the hospital. many of them are in grave condition. >> reporter: 9 km, many of them mexicans tell investigators they were jammed into the big rig in laredo, texas, nearly 100 people in triple digit heat. no food or water for 12 hours without moving. 9:00 p.m., the trailer starting the journey. people banging on the trailer walls, claiming the driver never stopped. in sheer desperation for air, passengers taking turns breathing from the only hole in the trailer. >> to not have access to ac, water, ventilation, proper ventilation is incredibly brule. >> reporter: three hours later, the truck arriving in san antonio. surveillance video showing some people pouring out, some fleeing. eight dead bodies in the

trailer. >> each one of them had heart rates over 130 beats per minute, which, again, they were very hot to the touch. >> reporter: dozens recovering. some suffering traumatic brain injuries and heatstroke. and severe dehydration. two more dying in the hospital. the tragedy nearly similar to the smuggling case in history. in 2003, 19 dying in victoria, texas. even though the immigrants say they were banging on the walls and screaming for hours, the driver claimed he was unaware of the human cargo and was surprised when he opened up the doors in this parking lot. he's due back in court later this week. kenneth moten in san antonio. we're going to move to washington. the republican party is facing such a razor thin margin with the pivotal health care vote and john mccain made the stunning decision to come back to d.c. for it. >> senator mccain is returning just over a week after undergoing surgery to remove a brain tumor.

and even with mccain, the vote to proceed to rerepeal and replace the affordable care act is still too close to call. >> president trump warned any senator who votes against starting debate is telling america that they're fine with obamacare. still not clear, though, what version of the bill they're voting on today. and the president still had health care on his mind as he addressed thousands of boy scouts in west virginia. the president delivered a campaign-style speech at the national scout jamboree. a colorful scene there. he initially told the crowd he didn't want to talk politics but apparently couldn't help himself as he railed against obamacare, he jokingly threatened health secretary tom price. >> and hopefully he's going to get the votes tomorrow to start our path toward killing this horrible thing known as obamacare that's really hurting us. you're fired! i'll get somebody. >> well, the president also bragged about his election victory and slammed fake news and mocked president obama for not attending the jamboree when he was president. and there is a bizarre twist to a tragic car crash in central california. police say the driver, 18-year-old obdulia sanchez allegedly was live streaming as she was driving. her 14-year-old sister was killed and another 14-year-old was injured and she continued live streaming through the event. neither of the passengers were wearing a seat belt. sanchez is facing charges of manslaughter and drunk drive. the live stream continued after the accident, showing sanchez pleading with her sister to wake up. her parents have seen the video but have not yet talked to their older daughter. now to another disturbing video that we are seeing. it was the result of a shootout that left three army green berets dead.

we're just seeing this video for the first time, even though they were killed by a soldier at a jordanian air base last fall. the soldier serving a life sentence for the shootings. here's abc's pierre thomas. >> reporter: the shooting starts as the faint puffs of smoke you see, the gunfire. two u.s. green beret military trainers exit their vehicles, take cover behind the concrete barriers and return fire in jordan. later they tray in vain to signal they're not a threat, waving their hands, but it doesn't work. the soldiers run behind the barriers further away. then the chilling moment the assailant, a jordanian soldier enters the frame, armed with an m-16 rifle. he methodically checks the first vehicle, makes his way to the second and moments later rushes the barriers where the two soldiers have taken cover. there's an exchange of gunfire at close range. when the shooting is over, two american soldiers are dead.

they're in that front truck. a third, james moriarty, is fatally wounded in the final shootout at those barriers. this tragic incident happened last november, but this tape is just being leased. the assailant, the jordanian soldier has been sentenced to life in prison with hard labor. pierre thomas, abc news, washington. and there is a drastic water shortage and drought in italy and it's even affecting the vatican. the holy city has shut off all of its fountains. it's in the keeping with pope francis's teachings of clean drinking water. water rations may be imposed in rome later this week. it may be the beginning of the end for a core part of the windows operating system. windows says it will no longer update the paint program. following with the update of windows 10, the software giant was quick to say paint isn't going away. it will still be available as a free download.

in a short period of time, as it did in alabama, it can actually overwhelm storm drains, especially in urban areas as you can see. streets flooded in phoenix after a second round of storms dumped more rain, more than two inches fell in just one hour. the flooding was especially severe in apache junction. about 30 miles east of the city. there were several rescues as well as drivers ignored those road closed signs. and in southern arizona, officials say they were very lucky they were able to rescue all 17 hikers from a flash flood. the first group that was rescued included a 4-year-old boy. his father was holding him above the water. the helicopter rotors got within 20 feet of the canyon walls as it lowered a deputy to where the hikers were stranded. the operation took all night. >> glad it was a success. getting to the altar is the top priority for a groom. having your tuxedo pretty close second. >> that's number two.

that was jut unconscionable. >> reporter: or this where a young woman was shot in the head. incidents like these are on the rise. according to the national highway traffic safety administration, reported deadly crashes stemming from road rage have gone from 70 incidents in 2006 rising to 422 in 2015. and according to the gun violence archive, highway altercations involving guns have more than doubled in the past three years. with the road rage hotline, drivers would directly report any incidents of aggressive driving that they witness. and after that call is received, the perpetrator would then receive a warning letter in the mail. they've also created a task force of 100 officers solely dedicated to monitoring aggressive driving. the hope of course that everyone will get from point a to point b safely. linsey davis, abc news, new york. >> and they say fatal car crashes involving road rage are climbing over 500% over the past decade. >> maybe it will help. we'll see. coming up, the mix and those good vibration whiskey. >> now we're talking.

made at a site in jerusalem considered sacred to jews and muslims. israel installed those detectors after arab gunmen killed two police officers earlier this month. reports say high-resolution cameras will be placed at the site to provide increased security. and back here at home, nearly half of the 40 wildfires in the country are in montana. and by far, the largest in that state is the lodge pole complex fire. it has consumed more than 300,000 acres and a dozen homes. crews and equipment from 34 states are now there in big sky country. many ranchers have been burned out, losing their herds. the lodge pole fire is a combination of several fires started by lightning strikes. cleanup is under way on an island off maryland's after a tornado. one of the most tornados in years, they say. wind speeds reached up to 135 miles per hour. the tornado tore through the second stories of townhouses and leveled other buildings completely. one of the buildings destroyed was a recreation center.
