they're no longer able to serve in the military. that announcement seems to have surprised just about everyone, including the pentagon. thanks for joining us today. kristen has the day off. here in the bay area, we are watching swift reaction to the president's rule to kick out ran its people from the military. our amy is talking to activists this morning, we're starting with jessica castro with what the president said and how our local leaders are reacting, jess. >> reporter: the new policy was announced this morning as you said on twitter. and take a look, the president sending out a series of tweets saying, quote, after consultation with the generals

and military experts, the united states government will not accept or allow transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the u.s. military. our military must be focussed on decisive and overwhelming victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs. in the military would entail, thank you. transgender service members have been able to serve openly in the military since last year. when defense secretary ash carter ended the ban. there are between 2500 and 7,000 transgender service members on active duty and anywhere from 1500 to 4,000 in the reserves according to iran corporation study. and that same study determined allowing transgender people to serve openly would have only minimal impact on readiness and health care costs. today's announcement seemed to come to a surprise to even the pentagon which is deferring all questions to the white house. california congresswoman and house democratic leader nancy pelosi slammed the president in

a statement released just a short time ago. calling the ban a, quote, vile and hateful agenda. and also went on to say, quote, it is a cruel and arbitrary decision designed to humiliate transgender americans who stepped forward to serve our country. meanwhile, senator harris echoed that sentiment and said the president's decision to force transgender individuals out of the military is discriminatory, wrong, and un-american. to be clear, the president's policy announcement on twitter did not clarify what will happen to transgender people already serving in the military. jessica castro, abc 7 news. >> jess, thank you. abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield continues the coverage. she is live with more on bay area reaction to president trump's surprise announcement, amy. >> reporter: hi reggie. you don't even only have to talk to people to get opinions out here. look at this sign we spotted in a window here in oakland. this is on broadway, visual

opinion here. but we did also hear a lot of disappointment on both sides of the bay. we found outrage on the streets of san francisco this morning when we asked people what they thought of president trump's recent tweets. >> i mean, they definitely should be allowed to serve. it seems like a step backwards that the point. it's ridiculous. to like restrict anyone in that way. >> i think that if you are an american citizen and you want to fight for your country, go ahead and do that and have that right. i think he needs to just focus more on other issues. >> reporter: some took issue with not only what he said, but how he said it, through tweets. >> i think it's very casual way to announce something to disrespectful and deep to a lot of people in this city, especiallily. >> i'm saying that our is -- >> reporter: the law center in oakland horrified and a lot of concerned phone calls today. >> the transgender community has been in such fear about what is

legislation to finally end the failed obamacare status quo. >> so there's no such thing as skinny repeal, it's a ruse to get to full repeal. >> this morning president trump singled out murkowski from alaska for her no vote on the repeal yesterday. the president tweeted, really let the republicans and our country down. we have new developments on the health of house majority whip steve scalise. he was discharge from a washington area hospital this morning a month after being shot at baseball practice with fellow republican leaders. the 51-year-old now plans to begin rehab. his office has not said where that's going to take place. the hospital said in a statement that scalise was in good spirits and looking forward to returning to work once he finishes rehab. new this morning, the latest suspect arrested for the deadly beating of a san jose woman is giving a jailhouse interview to abc 7 news. flo douglas was punched and kicked inside her san jose home

last september. she died from her injuries. abc 7 news reporter mike keller spoke to that second suspect now facing charges in this case and joins us live from san jose, matt. >> reporter: reggie, i spoke with johnny brown here inside the santa clara county main jail this morning. just a few hours before his first court appearance at 1:30 this afternoon. he told me he did not kill miss flo. 19-year-old johnny brown was passionate when he said he was innocent while speaking to us behind the plexy glass at the santa clara county jail. >> i did not get questioned. i did not get interviewed. talked to at all. they just arrested me and charged me with these charges without any evidence. they have no evidence that i was there that night. that i did that. i don't know why they're charging me with the murder of that lady, you know? >> reporter: brown was arrested yesterday at a gas station for the murder of 88-year-old flo douglas, affectionately known in her community as miss flo. faces burglary, robbery, and

elder abuse charges. last year, brown and zachary broke into miss flo's san jose home and beat her. she died from her injuries in october. he was arrested just days after the robbery. these two women were later arrested and accused of trying to cover up the crime. brown says he knew who ewen was and used to date the other, but was home the night of the robbery. >> whoever did do it, they need to speak up. speak up and speak up and say what they did because i was not there that night. and this is very sad that i'm being arrested for something i did not do. >> reporter: brown's mother was also arrested yesterday for harboring a criminal. that's a felony. she's being held in jail on $500,000 bail. reporting live in san jose, matt keller, abc 7 news. >> matt, thank you. new developments in that deadly car crash that was live streamed on instagram. the driver has now been formerly charged, 18-year-old sanchez faces manslaughter and dui for the deadly crash last week. she's said to make her first

court appearance later today. sanchez's sister jacqueline was in the back seat of that car. she died after she got ejected from it. another teen survived the crash. prosecutors say the instagram video is going to be a key piece of evidence in this case. turn now to an exciting day for soccer fans, but it could end up being a trying one for the rest of us. big match for team usa comes to le vie stadium at the worst possible time. 55,000 fans are expected to attend tonight's gold cup final, it starts at 6:30. notice that time, right? right during rush hour. santa clara police warn people should expect major traffic delays, especially later tonight, after the game ends. if you're going to the match or will be driving anywhere near levy stadium, there are some road closures and mass transit changes, and of course we go to our expert, traffic reporter alexis smith. >> hey reggie, i want to say i've got all this information on our website, abc7news.com.

if you miss anything, double check. that's a great resource for you. gold cup final tonight, 6:30 start. we have the drive closed around the stadium. that happened around 9:30 this morning. a lot of smaller surface streets closing throughout the day. and america is open now until 10:00 tonight. so, police are saying they're not going to be able to set up the patterns that they normally are for a big event. that's going to make things even tougher. for that p.m. commute, we are expecting some really heavy volumes and those poorlts to open up at 1:30 today. for the five hours before the event, we're expecting traffic. at 9:30 when the event lets out. mass transit, the way to go, ramping up service with extra trains, cars, they will provide extra buses as necessary throughout the afternoon. or we can take cal train to santa clara station and jump on to the stadium. no matter what way you're getting there, expect delays, reggie, back to you. >> alexis, i'm doing my impression of traffic, notice

i'm not moving. thank you. happening today, the metropolitan transportation is a proposal that would increase bridge tolls by three bucks. that hike would expect the seven state-owned bridges in the area. and that includes the bay bridge. it would fund more than $4 billion in regional transportation projects. state lawmakers would also need to approve the measure the governor would have to sign off on it too, and then all of us would have to vote for it on a ballot next year. we have new details this morning on the car crash that left dozens of people without power in castro valley. power is now fully restored. you'll see right here a red volkswagen crashed into a power pole on north bridge avenue. and it caused that power outage. the volkswagen was involved in another collision with a black bmw just before crashing into that pole. the driver of the volkswagen now under arrest for suspicion of dui. new morning from santa clara where all lanes are back open on highway 101 near the grain america parkway after a crash

involving a gas tanker. chp says a white mercedes rear ended the tanker truck. suv flipped over trying to avoid the initial crash. three people injured, taken to the hospital, fortunately the tanker didn't leak any fuel. happening tonight, police and firefighters in walnut creek will be conducting a live training drill, no parking signs already out at walnut creek's broadway plaza. the drill will take place from 10:00 tonight until 2:00 tomorrow morning and streets around the plaza will be closed. police warn that there will be loud bangs and smoke as officers simulate explosions, again, this is just a drill. developing news, protesters angry over the approval of a new planned parenthood in san francisco are taking out their frustration using chalk. we saw anti-abortion rights messages scribbled on the sidewalk near the home of commissioner dennis richards. neighbors tell the examiner, they saw about 40 young kids and a few adults swarm that neighborhood yesterday, similar

now to some really interesting information about parenthood. the cdc reveals fertility is at an all-time low here in the u.s. survey may help shed some light on the reason why is. age is a major factor. specifically the cdc says the fertility rate is going down for women under the age of 30. health line conducted a survey asking millennials why they're waiting to have kids. >> according to to the survey, the top two reasons for delaying
