a ride malfunction at the ohio state fair turns deadly. this midday the impact of the tragedy now being felt coast to coast, including right here in the bay area. thanks for joining us today. i'm reggie aqui. kristen has the day off. that accident killed one teenager and hurt several others on opening night of the ohio state fair. we do have live team coverage right now. abc 7 news reporter matt keller has the local impact on amusement rides here in the bay area. we'll start with abc 7's jessica castro. jess? >> reporter: reggie, today would have been the first full day of fair-goers but instead of teaming with families the fair has been packed win specters trying to figure out how a ride turned deadly.

>> this will not define the ohio state fair. the ohio state fair will carry on. we will have -- there's so many things to do here. >> reporter: a trip to the ohio state fair went horribly went. >> people went flying off the ride called the fireball. >> reporter: riders on the fireball were spinning in the air when an entire car broke off sending several riders on to the ground below. >> whole leg and hit the ground and he wasn't breathing. >> reporter: an 18-year-old man was killed and seven people were hurt, five of those in critical condition. >> we will begin an investigation on this. >> reporter: organizers say the ride passed an inspection only hours before the accident. abc station wsyx was there with state inspectors checking equipment before the fair opened. >> these guys have been doing this their whole entire lives and honestly they know these rides better than we do. >> reporter: firebal is described as an aggressive thrill ride and fairs around the

nation are now cautioning against the ride. back in ohio the state's governor has ordered all rides at the fair closed until the investigation is complete and additional safety inspections can be conducted. >> despite this, ohio will move on. that doesn't mean that we won't remember yesterday. it doesn't mean that we were not going to keep those families in our prayers. i've been reaching out to them since last night. >> reporter: there were storms in ohio with heavy rain and flooding the week leading up to the fair. inspectors spent long workdays inspecting more than 70 rides, but state officials are insisting the safety inspection was not rushed. jessica castro, abc 7 news. >> so disturbing, jess. abc news reporter matt keller continues our team coverage live from santa cruz where the fireball ride as the boardwalk is now closed. matt? >> reporter: reggie, the board walk just opened up at 11:00 so people are starting to arrive here. this morning they just put up

this barricade in front of the fireball ride. it is one of the most popular rides here on the boardwalk, but no one will be riding it today. when people will be allowed back on is still unknown. this was supposed to be micah's year to ride the fireball as the santa cruz beach boardwalk. the 8-year-old from portland has passed the height requirement. >> i tried getting on it last year at the ovrrange county fai >> reporter: and disappointment again for micah because no one with ride anywhere in california. >> the state has all openers of this particular ride throughout the state to keep the ride closed until further notice until they can get more involved and make sure that everything is secure. >> reporter: we watched as the boardwalk employee inspected the giant dipper early this morning. the boardwalk says they do daily inspections in all 36 ride and plan on contacting fireball's manufacturer to discuss the ride and what happened in ohio. >> fireball is a ride with a really good safety record. frankly, all the roids at the

park have a really good safety record in large part because of the work of our staff and the partnership with the state. >> reporter: the california state fair shut down its fireball ride last night. the sonoma county fair opens next week and it's expected to be there. the ride was scheduled to be closed as a precaution when the park opened today and could reopen at any time. at the boardwalk parents may be hesitant allowing kids on to the fireball no matter how badly they want to ride >> you don't think you'd let him on? >> no, no way. >> reporter: even after it would be cleared. >> no way, not after something like that. there's no way. >> reporter: we contacted state rell lators, and they have yet to get back with us. no record on what they will require before allowing the fireball rides all across california and here at the boardwalk to reopen. reporting live in santa cruz, matt keller, abc 7 news. >> matt, thank you. our abc 7 news app has been sending out push alerts about the ride malfunction in ohio and

forecast. >> time to find someone with a pool. thank you. renters in the east bay say enough is enough. they are now demanding a moratorium on rising rents. abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield live for us in pleasant hill with more on that. amy? >> reporter: hi, reggie. protesters are on the move right now here in pleasant hill. take a look. they are headed to the california apartment association. that's where they are going to demand a moratorium on rent increases. they also want the association to support repealing the costa hawkins rental housing act which put limits on rent control. they don't like that. organizers of this event say renters are struggling to make ends meet in the bay area, especially when rents go up each month for some tennants. they are asking the large corporations to help keep these people in the communities rather than forcing them out. >> well, we know that business is business, but the problem is that wages have stayed the same for a long time, and we know that poem are struggling to pay their rents, and currently we

know that there's a shortage of affordable housing. we know that there's a lot of development happening in terms of like luxury homes, luxury condos, but these, again, do not get covered under rent control so where is housing for people who really need it? >> reporter: we do have a statement from the california apartment association. policy such as rent control discourages development and exacerbate tenant short action. tenant groups would be better served to demand more housing in their communities, not policies that deter it. this group says though they won't be deterred for fighting for a moratorium on represent the increases and encourage renters in all communities to mobilize. they say there are actions like this one happening all over the state today. reporting live in pleasant hill, amy hollyfield, abc 1 news. >> amy, thank you. more than 24 hours after president trump's surprise announcement he's banning transgender troops the outrage continues to grow and among those now responding veterans of

we're getting dramatic video out of st. louis. a tanker ended up dangling off the side of the highway. tow crews had to lift the back of it and set it down under the overpass. police say the driver did get hurt. his injuries are not life-threatening. new this morning, twitter is reporting no meaningful increase in iris, and that is impacting stocks. shares are down 14% this morning. the social media company reports its 328 million monthly users remain unchanged from last quarter. it's actually 5% up from a year ago. one analyst says it's clear the boost in user growth from the presidential election was a, quote, one-time deal. also this morning, move over, bill gates. amazon ceo jeff bezos is now the richest person in the world, according to the latest at all i by "forbes" putting his worth at more than $90 billion. hard to imagine. he rose to the top spot this

morning thanks to a surge in amazon's stock which puts him $3,500 million ahead of gates. now keep in mind, "forbes" says bezos would be nowhere close to gates had gates not given so much of his money to philanthropy. in the south bay plans for a hotel a little like a to you-for-one. san jose is getting one building with two different hotels inside. according to our media partner "the mercury news," a total of 261 rooms will be built at the site. about half will be a residence inn and the other half a fairfield inn and suites. both operate under marriott. the project is under construction north of the interchange of highway 237 and great america parkway. it's located just a short distance from levi stadium, california's great america and several of silicon valley's tech campuses including goggle, cisco and adobe. developers hope to open the project in two years. l.a. police investigating an accident involving justin

bieber, and you'll see it caught on video. >> definitely looked like that hurt. bieber hit a photographer as he pulled out of an event in beverly hills last night. the pop star got out right away and knelt by the man until paramedics got there. they took him to the hospital. he has an injured leg. police say bieber cooperated with officers. angelina jolie is opening up about her latest health scare. the 42-year-old actress says she developed hypertension and bells palsy last year as a result of damage to her facial nerves that caused the side of her face to droop. she talks about it in the upcoming issue of ""vanity fair." "it's usually caused by a viral infection and can lead to pain and weakness on one side of the face. jolie says she's fully recovered from the condition thanks to acupuncture. >> these are two conditions that are related to stress, and it's quite clear to me that she

check out this rescues during flash floods in kansas city, missouri. two firefighters got a call of a driver trapped in high water. the rescuers forced the car door open to get the driver out. crews pulled the drivers and firefighters on a rope to safety. floodwaters were rising quickly. the who had of the car went under water within 20 minutes. the car floated away but thank goodness that person got out. >> yeah. they had a series of storms and thunderstorms that lasted nearly 24 hours over the kansas city metro area. back other at home, this isn't

with temperatures in the upper 100s to 80s. santa rosa 92, warm to hot in the north bay, 16 and napa about 92. south bay, big jump, ten degrees warmer, 91 in san jose and 100 in gilroy and morgan hill 99. santa cruz a sunny 78. on the peninsula 82 in san mateo and not quite as comfortable as yesterday especially palo alto at 87 and menlo park at 85. mid-60s along the coast and oakland 78 miles per hour there and getting a little warmer. 87 and berkeley about 77. downtown san francisco about 72, marina, mission at about 69 degrees. got daly city at 65. say hello to the warmth at noon, especially away from the coast and hello to the heat at 3:00, and as we head towards 8:00 it's still pretty warm. 70s and 80s away from the coast. just a little bit, and you can see there owes still going to be
