>> reporter: yeah, and who knows why but it seems that the people stealing these devices on bart may not have heard or know about this new technology called a kill switch. in most cases they are stealing a phone that will be unusable. san francisco has seen the number of smartphone thefts reduced by 50% since 2013 when the number of robberies reached a record high. >> people were getting viciously assaulted for their smartphones. it was snatch and grab robberies. people were getting beaten. >> reporter: that was before the san francisco da's office pushed to have california pass a law in 2014 demanding that the wireless industry install a software commonly known as a kill switch.

when the phone is stolen, the thief is unable to put it on a new carrier because only you have the user name and password. >> i'm kind of depen dent on modern technology to save my phone for me if something happens. >> reporter: despite this knowledge, this type of crime continues on bart trains and stations. >> we're still seeing a level number of cell phone and electronic thefts. >> reporter: in the past six months there's been 225 thefts of electronic devices. >> the thefts are occurring as the trains are pulling into the stations and the door open and the phone gets taken and the electronic device and they run off the train. >> attention passenger, protect your phone. >> reporter: bart makes periodic announce immaterial on its p.a. system. >> i carry it in hi back pocket pm i'm pretty confidence no one will jump on me and take my phone. i'm kind of ready for it. >> reporter: bart hopes

passengers will become more aware of their surroundings. we're now hearing from president trump's former chief of staff reince priebus hours after his resignation was announced. he traveled with president trump earlier today. he could be seen walking to waiting car. priebus spoke to cnn about an hour ago. he said he formally resigned yesterday and was not asked to do so by the president. he said he included this picking general john kelly. >> this is not like a situation where there's a bunch of ill will feelings. this is good for the president. i think it's smart for him to pick general kelly and i think that things will be run very well. >> secretary kelly will start the transition on monday. he said he's been fortunate to have served his country for 45

years. former contra costa county mark peterson has been ordered suspended from practicing state law. a special counsel has been appointed which could recommend he be disbarred. last month peterson was charged with 12 felony counts of perjury and grand theft after it was found he spent $66,000 of campaign donations on personal expenses. peterson claimed it was a loan. one of the men chanched in the deadly ghostship fire had his bail reduced but his attorneys said he's still not happy. >> reporter: they say their client never had a guilty conscious and never thought he would be facing charges opinion harris face adjudge at bail

to the death of 36 people and a high bail is the best way to ensure his appearance in court. in oakland, abc 7 news. a come who lived streamed a deadly car crash last week will remain in jail after a judge refused thro lower her bail. he faces charges of vehicular manslaughter and dui. her 14-year-old sister was killed in the crash. another teen survived. bail was set at $560,000. her lawyer says it's excessive and his client doesn't have that kind of money. >> having been in foster care for the last few years and still being in it and only 18 years old, that she would have $560,000 to post bond on these charges is absurd. >> sanchez was impaired when she crashed but refused to submit to a clem cal test. the instra gram video will be a key piece in the case.

christian. >> sort of your typical bay area summer pattern. feels warm inland and cool at the coast. we're looking at temperature readings of 60 degrees which is pretty winter like. we have 77 in san jose. 79 in gilroy and 62 at half h-mn bay. napa, 73. 83 at fairfield. 93 at concord and 88 at livermore. move along to live doppler 7. we have mainly sunny skies over the bay and inland. marine layer is deepening along the coastline. that deepening marine layer has brought us a bit of a cooldown today in some locations. check out the 24 hour temperature change. there's that marine layer as pushing out over the bay. this is the view and these are our forecast features. today's pattern will repeat

itself tomorrow. it will be turning slightly warmer on sunday. overnight look for the fog continues to reach out over the bay. low temperatures at the coast. in the low to mid-50s and the remainder of the bay area will see mid to upper 50s. it will be pretty mild. by afternoon it will be milder to warm tomorrow. we'll have a pattern much like today's pattern with lingering low clouds at the coast. highs in the low 60s. we'll see a few mid to upper 70s. inland east bay, 92 at concord. look for a high of 84 at san jose. at the beaches tomorrow look for highs mainly in the low to mid-60s. it will be relatively mild even though low clouds will linger. it will be breezy as well. santa cruz will top out at about 75 degrees.

down at gilroy, it's the garlic festival. both days look for sunny skies. highs up to 90. it will be warming up on sunday. as much of the bay area will be warming up on sunday. we'll see mid-90s to upper 90s. tomorrow we'll see low to mid-90s. on monday get warmer. by tuesday lots of inland location will top out at 100 degrees or higher. here is the accuweather seven-day forecast. looks like the peak of the warming will occur midweek next week. tuesday and wednesday look for pretty hot weather inland with highs up around 100 degrees. we'll see mid-80s around the bay which is pretty warm also. about 70 degrees or higher on the coast midweek next week. we have a week full of wonderful beach weather coming our way even with the prenz sence of cl clouds it will still be mild.
