village circle. the driver, 20-year-old felix carryon was found outside the truck. witnesses saw him speeding before that. authorities carried out major raids across sydney, and now abc news reporter gloria rivera has the latest. >> there has been a major joint terrorism counter operation to disrupt a terrorist plot to bring down an airplane. >> reporter: an australian terrorist attack thwarted overnight. >> we do believe it's islamic-inspired terrorism. >> reporter: four kacapitals across sydney raided by police. four men are now under arrest and are yet to be charged. the investigation behind the terror plot is in its infant stages, but australian police

drugs out of his senior citizens home, and the drugs are about has hard core as you can get. leslie brinkley spoke with a neighbor who said she saw the dealer operate out of his building for two years. >> reporter: the dealer, residents say it was a 60-year-old man who lived in this senior housing complex in the piedmont area of oakland. the customers, young women in their teens and 20s. this woman said she saw it all unfold night after night from a window looking down on the circle drive. >> they would hand over small packets of drugs to people, get money. car drives away and then 15, 20 minutes later another car comes through. so continual traffic coming through here buying drugs from him. >> reporter: like drive-through drugs. >> drive-through drugs. >> reporter: this disabled senior said she complained to building management. the company called satellite affordable housing associates. we went by their berkeley office but they were closed and nobody answered the phone.

>> we were told they couldn't do anything about it, to talk to the police. >> reporter: residents alerted police, and according to the east bay times, authorities arrested the 68-year-old man in late june and found what appeared tobacco contain, black tar heroin and marijuana inside his car and inside his senior apartment. the paper reports court records show he is a 14-time felon and has pleaded not guilty. >> i was appalled that this could happen where i live and to see this man doing this under our nose and think that he could .>> repter: she claims there was only one disabled parking spot in front of their building and that this man, this dealer, parked there every day with, in the end, a falsified placard. she said residents are relieved he was arrested and now has moved out. in the newsroom, i'm leslie brinkley, abc 7 news. a bicyclist is dead after being hit by a vta light rail train in san jose.

the accident happened around 4:30 yesterday afternoon near the 8th street station and winchester line. sheriffs and investigators are still looking into what happened. melpedes police are still investigating the death of a 50-year-old man as a homicide. the body was found on windsor and 58th street. they don't know how the man died but they do say it's suspicious. residents are asked to call police with any information they may have about the man's death. we're learning new details about the first large-scal public transhousing project. this is just the first phase of the project. they will renovate a total of 2500 units into sustainable, energy-efficient homes without displacing those residents here. it is in alyce view, potrero and

back. cornell bernard, abc 7 news. a big celebration in washington yesterday over the health care vote. health care advocates, celebrity activists and lawmakers spoke at our lives on the line rally. house minority leader nancy pelosi says it has been planned since june. at the time, of course, they didn't know whether the gop health care bill would pass. >> when this event was planned, we were talking about it earlier in the week. we had hoped that it would be a celebration. we had hoped that it would be. and the reason it is is because of all of you. >> pelosi thinks senate democrats and republicans who voted against the bill. she also recognized they move on to the hub project. a group in oakland are on to perform in scotland despite the upheaval.

skyline high school students raised $42,000 to perform at the american high school festival in edinburgh, but they still need another 22,000. they have up until september 15 to raise the money. they plan to auction off tickets to a warriors game that they hope will defray a large chunk of that debt. we know there are lots of warriors fans out there so hopefully they'll make it. today is a beautiful day even though the fog looks pretty stubborn. 58 in danville, 64 in livermore. it's been sunny there all morning long. we're starting out 17 degrees cooler but we'll finish warmer. i'll explain that with my accuweather forecast. workers tried unsuccessfully to free a humpback whale on the southern coast. why they're confident they'll be

rescuers in southern california are trying very hard to help a whale who is entangled in a fishing line. take a look. a captain of a sight-seeing cruise ship took these pictures near long beach. he spotted the humpback whale saturday morning. crews were already there trying to cut the line off the whale, but unfortunately, they weren't able to completely free the humpback. but they were able to attach a tracking device to the whale so hopefully they will be able to find him again. back now with an emotional reunion in santa fe. a professional soccer player who nearly drowned met the men who saved his life during a very professional ceremony yesterday. here's the story from the stadium. >> reporter: this is the first time matea silva is meeting the men who saved him face to face. but before there were words, there were hugs.

>> i don't remember, but you guys were there. >> reporter: on july 4, silva was at lake tahoe and went for an early morning swim alone. suddenly he started struggling. the cold water overtook him and he started drowning. chris gunther and colby peterson happened to be paddle boarding nearby. >> i ripped off my sweatshirt and dove in because he wasn't coming back up. luckily i was able to get underneath him, push off the sand and push him up where colby was waiting. >> reporter: colby got silva onto his board and pushed him to the shore where retired er nurse john burke also happened to be on the beach. >> as soon as they hit the sand, i flipped him over, checked pulse, res operations, nothing. flat line. so i started cpr. went for about five, eight minutes. >> reporter: silva started breathing but stayed in a coma for two days. the earthquakes honored the heroes with a ceremonial pre-game first goal.

silva isn't on the field with the earthquakes this season, he was currently an affiliate in reno. the team was planning a barbecue that day. silva is returning to reno to continue his rehab. >> i'm just really happy that he's alive and we were able to help. >> reporter: in san jose, abc news. a new fire station is open for business to serve residents of santa alameda county. residents are in the east bay community of cherry land where people came to celebrate the grand opening of station 23. the 11,000-square-foot facility replaces an older house from back in the '40s. >> it was small, it was challenging for the firefighters to be there, but they stuck it out and served valuabiantly ilit station. >> most importantly, the station

should increase response times for the cherryland bob, the man right in the front with the orange jacket, tooted his horn as he and his support group completed the ride near mason field. he is a leukemia survivor thanks to a bone marrow transplant that he achieved eight years ago. he also rides to give other cancer patients hope. >> also to try to create awareness for patients going through the process right now that you can get through this and you can have a full, active, healthy life afterwards. >> bob is also riding as part of lifeblood, an organization that raises money for bone marrow research. giants fans, did you find your free hunter pence hat or jersey yesterday? it was announced last week there

layer begins to compress and shrink. live doppler 7, you can see the fog. it is pretty much all through the east bay, the san pablo bay, i should say. it's sunny in the east bay but we're looking at winds to lighten up a bit. 25 miles an hour here in the delta. when that happens we get a strong on-shore push, like yesterday. as of today they're backing up to about 15 miles an hour now and we're starting out cooler. we had a really cool day yesterday, and with the fog coming back, not even really burning back yesterday, we are two to seven degrees cooler. but things change today as high pressure builds. once again it's that same area of high pressure from desert southwest that has brought the heat to july. 56 in the city, 65 in mountain view, though. 63 in san jose, sunny there. upper 50s oakland, gilroy and 50 degrees on the coast. we'll see 71 degrees, sunshine here and half moon bay,

pacifica, stenson and looking at cronkite, all will be sunny. concord and livermore, low to mid-60s. visibility anywhere from 3 to 6 miles, and in san francisco you can see the gray sky. noticeably warmer inland today at least five degrees, and we'll bump up two three degrees along the coast. strong rip currents and warming through much of the middle of the week. the wave heights have come down. they're now coming back up in monterey to 7 to 9 feet. right now they're at 5 feet, rip currents all a possibility. with the clouds peeling back throughout the day, we'll make it to the low 70s. even here from about 11:00, 12:00 to 2:00, you'll get some sun and then the fog is back. partly cloudy skies there. the last day for the gilroy garlic festival. mid-80s today.

ever get hungry while you're getting a ride? the ride-sharing company lyft is showing some backlash from some of its riders after the food delivery service was introduced next week. they don't like the taco bell rider which instructs them to go to taco bell during a ride. it's being tested in orange county. some drivers are calling it the worst feature ever, saying they will lose money sitting in a drive-through line. lyft says participating in the program is optional for drivers. a popular hiking trail in san francisco turned into an outdoor concert hall. abc news was near point lobos yesterday as an estimated 2,000 people gathered to listen to 99

south korea in support of the intercontinental ballistic missiles from north korea. they flew over the south korean air base in seoul before they flew to guam. the mission was in response to a missile test by north korea this past month. the presidnt has not solved the problem in north korea while he is still wrestling with health care repeal and replace. >> reporter: this bilateral mission on the korean peninsula a district response to the north's provocation. friday's launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile was especially worrying. icbms might be able to reach the continental u.s., so the u.s. is testing countermeasures. overnight the president also fired back with tweets. "i'm very disappointed in

china," he wrote in one tweet. then in another, "they do nothing for us with north korea, just talk. we will no lger allow this to continue." earlier in the day, another tweet storm on health care reform. this one directed at members of his own party, calling them total quitters if they don't hold a revote, taunting them saying, "they look like fools and are just wasting time." you may be surprised it took this long. honolulu has become the first city to make it illegal to cross the street while looking at a mobile electronic device like your cell phone. it's called the distracted walking law. no more texting, talking or playing games. now you must actually pay attention to where you're walking. honolulu officials say the law is needed because so many people are being hit. police actually have to see

to give birth herself, down the hall she heard screams by a woman in labor. >> my husband said, is that a woman giving birth? she was completely dilated. >> reporter: she recognized patient she had just seen days before. >> i put on a gown to cover my backside and put on some boots over my shoes to keep from getting any fluid and all that stuff on me and went down to her room, and i knew her. >> reporter: she said johnson's baby was ready for her big debut, and mom was happy to be able to just start pushing. >> i love doing what i do. i lover taking care of mothers and babies. most doctors are always thinking of their patients even when they're a patient themtselves. >> reporter: just moments after jumping in as the stand-in physician, she was back in her own room giving birth to her own bundle of joy.

>> giving birth is something you get to share. she worked with me up to the last second. i'm sure you've noticed that airplane seats seem to get smaller and smaller each and every year. this morning the faa is under a federal court order to review the sizes of those seats and legroom on commercial flights. an advocacy group called flyers rights is pushing for new rules regulating seat sizes. the group went to court after the faa turned down its petition last year. activists argued that small seats can actually put people's health at risk and they say airlines are not recognizing growing obesity rates. an air national guard tanker accidentally dropped a load of fire retardant on cars in fresno. calfire confirmed the drop, but they didn't say why. this happened around 5:30 yesterday afternoon when retardant just started raining down on all those cars in the shopping center, leaving people

>> thanks, lisa. droneview 7 flew over stonestown. the mall could be saying goodbye to a big department store and saying hello to a trend that's sweeping the country. >> reporter: you wouldn't know it from the shiny marble floors or trendy merchandise, but stonestown has the oldest shopping center. a row of shops in the '60s, a mall in the '80s, now it could reinvent itself again. would you be sad if this macy's left? >> no. >> reporter: that's what could happen if they approve a department store they've asked to reconfigure and use for other things. >> i think an arcade would be pretty cool or a bowling alley, something not typical for a mall. >> reporter: they do say they've made similar changes at some of their other properties and it's reflective of a bigger trend.

>> across the board retailers are being forced to right-size and be more experience oriented. >> experiences like dining, movies, and yes, bowling. they say those are just some of its clients who have expressed interest if the space opens up. and they do mention a movie theater. >> we're seeing movie theaters represent themselves in terms of experience, food and dining. >> they say across the country they've opened 15 entertainment venues where big box stores used to be. they also brought in six grocery stores and more gyms. >> they can make themselves more relevant for the surrounding residents. >> reporter: but not everyone would welcome the change. one employee says this macy's has a loyal following among seniors who find it more accessible than shopping downtown. >> we have a clientle of people who are here for years, and all this gossip about us moving make customers sad. >> reporter: macy's has not said when or if it will close. in san francisco, jonathan

goes up to 260 million bucks. i wouldn't mind that money right now. i think a lot of people feel the same. also, this is a very popular weekend, it turns out, for garlic festivals. you probably already know about the famous one happening in gilroy, but there's also a garlic festival in the czech republic. one of its most popular activities is the unusual sport of garlic spitting. the top male spit ter launched his garlic 22 feet, the top woman launched hers 15 feet. there's lots of food made with different garlic recipes. it started a tradition of garlic growing in the region. the san francisco ballet is performing for free in the city, and their performance in the sunset district begins at 2:00 this afternoon. this is the company's only show in the bay area all summer long so really a rare treat.
