we do say good morning, everybody, on this monday. big changes and new challenges for the trump white house this morning. >> retired general john kelly is officially taking over as white house chief of staff today as president trump tries to hit the reset button going into another busy week. abc's kenneth moton has the latest from washington. kenneth, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, diane and kendis. after that surprise announcement on twitter, president trump's new chief of staff will be sworn in today and his to-do list is already long. today general john kelly will take the reigns of trump white house. >> john kelly will do a fantastic job. >> reporter: the homeland security secretary replacing chief of staff reince priebus, hoping to bring order after a tumultuous six months in office for president trump. >> he brought kelly in for the same reason he brings in successful businessmen and he brings in other generals. he likes people who have accomplished things. >> reporter: this week set to be a busy one for the new chief of staff. two u.s. bombers flew over the korean peninsula.

japan and south korea joining the show of force against north korea after it launched another alarming intercontinental ballistic missile that could potentially reach the u.s. mainland. >> reliability equals credibility which means we have to take this threat seriously. >> reporter: trump blamed china in a tweet saying they do nothing for us with north korea. we will no longer allow this to continue. >> any military action we take would probably trigger a war unlike anything we've seen since world war ii. >> reporter: the president expected to green light new sanctions against russia. the bill already sparking retaliation by president vladimir putin who kicked hundreds of u.s. diplomats out of his country. vice-president pence in estonia reassuring allies that russian aggression in the region is unacceptable. >> our allies in eastern europe can be confident that the united states of america stands with them. >> reporter: despite russia meddling in the u.s. election, president trump objected to the new sanctions bill approved by congress but we're told is expected to sign it soon. diane and kendis. >> that's kenneth moton for us live from washington.

thanks, kenneth. and president trump is refusing to give up on health care. the president is urging republican senators to keep working, tweeting that the world is watching. and after saying let obamacare implode, he's threatening to end payments to insurers designed to cut costs for lower income americans. meanwhile, john mccain is back in arizona following his dramatic no vote on the gop bill. he's scheduled to start treatment for brain cancer today. overseas australia is on alert this morning after an alleged terror plot. reports indicate that the suspects planned to use poisonous gas to take down an airline. extra security measures including intense screenings causing plenty of airport delays across that country this morning. abc's jennifer eccleston with more. >> reporter: investigators scrambling to examine evidence of an alleged plot to bring down an airliner, heavily armed police summoned hazmat suits, others wearing gas masks raiding homes across sydney, australia. four men arrested. >> we believe it's islamic

inspired terrorism. >> reporter: officials believe the terror plan involved an improvised device. describing the plot as credible. sources tell abc news that american intelligence officials are closely monitoring the case because of suspected communications between the alleged plotters and isis. chilling new details from the newspaper, "the australian." the suspects allegedly constructing an explosive device using poisonous gas that would kill or immobilize everyone on the aircraft. abc news has not verified this report. >> if australian media reports are correct, this would be the first time that we've seen any sort of terrorist act that involved gas on an airplane. >> reporter: airports across australia intensifying, armed patrols warning passengers of vigorous security. >> the heightened security measures that have been undertaken at our airports have been done on the advice of our security agencies which are the best in the world. >> reporter: jennifer eccleston,

abc news, london. more violent clashes are expected in venezuela today as opposition leaders call for a protest against president nicolas maduro's newly elected constituent assembly. an explosion in caracas wounded at least four police officers as thousands of venezuelans protested yesterday's vote to grant maduro's socialist party sweeping powers to rewrite the country count country's constitution. electoral authorities said more than 8 million people voted in favor of maduro's power grab. at least ten people were killed in those clashes yesterday including one candidate up for election who was shot in his home. stunning images from taiwan after two typhoons hit within a 24-hour period. absolutely amazing. more than 100 people were injured after the first typhoon struck, and several parts of the island nation are under water from the twin storms. thousands without power. those storms are triggering landslides as well. now for a look at your weather.

there's a muddy mess to clean up across some parts of west virginia after flash flooding over the weekend. the hardest hit areas received about four inches of rain in just two hours. residents reported several feet of water in their homes and the mud left behind in some areas is being measured in feet. meanwhile record heat is building across the west. plenty of triple-digit temperatures from today through the middle of the week. heat advisories, watches and warnings are posted from washington all the way down to southern california. the mayor of nashville, tennessee and her husband are mourning the loss of their only child apparently to a drug overdose. mayor megan barry said her 22-year-old son max died this weekend. he graduated from college only last month. in a statement the barrys asked for privacy as they mourned their loss. it could be as long as two weeks before the power problem

>> panic and chaos in los panic and chaos in los angeles as a van plows into people who were eating outside of a restaurant. at least nine people were injured. several others are still in the hospital. investigators say the incident is not terror related. witnesses say the van swerved after allegedly running a red light to avoid hitting other cars and ended up on the sidewalk. the driver is in custody and is facing hit and run charges. most rides at the ohio state fair have re-opened after last week's deadly accident. they were closed after the fireball ride broke apart mid-air killing a teenager and injuring seven others. that ride is still closed. the ride's owner is blaming mechanical failure for the accident. airline passengers unhappy with their seat size, well, they now have a powerful new ally. >> a federal appeals court says the faa should reconsider regulating those rapidly shrinking airline seats. >> reporter: from cabin confrontations leading to shocking scenes like this -- >> oh, my god! >> reporter: -- to heated run-ins with overstressed

passengers and police over cancellations and delays, the cabin pressure keeps rising. one thing seems to keep shrinking, leg room. seat widths have decreased an inch and a half since the early 2000s, measuring about 17 inches. not only that they say the space between seats has decreased from an average of 35 inches to about 31 inches. some bargain airlines like frontier and spirit have just 28 inches of leg room. >> the seats really were designed for the way people were in the 1950s and obviously people have gotten larger. >> a passenger group appealing to the judges says cramped planes are now becoming a hazard. they say they slow down emergency evacuations and increase the danger of passengers developing blood clots in their legs. we have much more on this story coming up on "good morning america." twitter is reaching out in a new bid to tap into a larger pool of advertisers. >> the struggling social media giant is testing a premium

jones transferred to a hospital in south florida where he is listed in stable condition. this luxury villa rents for more than $2,200 a night on the caribbean island known as a popular celebrity destination but now also gaining notoriety for violence. turks and caicos police saying the crime rate on the island is increasing but the american tourist shootings don't appear to be connected. >> when you come here you don't automatically assume that nothing can happen to you because we have criminals. >> reporter: officials there insist the country remains safe and the state department has not issued any advisories for american travelers. marci gonzalez, abc news, santa monica, california. an inmate is on the run. a dozen inmates escaped sunday evening from the walker county jail located near birmingham. 11 of those inmates have now been recaptured. two of the escapees were in jail for attempted murder.

no word yet on how they managed to escape from the jail. a pregnant woman was among dozens of people rescued from stranded gondolas in germany. they were trapped more than 100 feet above the rhine river in cologne. the system stopped after one gondola struck a support column. the mother-to-be was among two adults who suffered minor injuries. a fast and furious finish helped the u.s. soccer team pull off quite a comeback in san diego. they wiped out a two-goal deficit in the final ten minutes against brazil. megan rapinoe tied the match at 3 in the 85th minute. it was her first national team goal in two years. then in the 89th minute, julie ertz scores after a scramble in the front. the u.s. wins 4-3. we go from football to some baseball. >> let's get the highlights from espn. >> john buccigross, john anderson. do you suppose we should start with a guy who got his first hit or the fella who got his 3,000th? we'll start with the higher total. adrian beltre, there it is, 3,000th career hit.
