belongs. in pleasant hill, abc7 news. please in the north bay are looking for the thieves who stole thousands of dollars worth of jewelry from a costco store. these photos from a resident show the smashed display cases in the novato costco. this happen yesterday around 10:00 in the morning when three thieves wearing surgical masks burst in, stole the merchandise, and got away. the jewelry is valued add about $50,000. they're investigating to see if this case is connected to other recent robberies. >> 4:30 on the dot. if you're just waking up and joining us, we'll get you right over to meteorologist mike nicco for a check of weather. >> hi, everybody. here's a look at your 12-hour day planner. temperatures at 7:00, i also overlaid some of the cloud cover. you can see not really all that extensive during the morning. mainly from about san mateo bridge to the richmond-san

rafael bridge. 66 in antioch. by noon, the mid to upper 70s. those will change to low 80s, even mid 90s in the east bay. still some 70s around the bay, and a comfortable evening. 60 around the bay, 70s and 80s inland. we have poor air quality coming up in the seven-day forecast. >> the buniesha area, we have a possible rollover crash in that area. we have not gotten that confirmed, but just past lake herman road, we have red starting to show up on the southbound side. i'm assuming we have some lanes down just before you get to the benicia bridge. working to confirm that. as soon as i have more information, i'll let you know. maybe a little bit of fog, little haziness on the bay bridge commute. overall, not too bad, and nice and light as you head into san francisco. we also have overnight roadwork in tracy. we'll check on that next. >> the popular breakfast place in the south bay won't open this

morning after a turn into an unintentional drive-through. >> the driver went through the front of the lot gatos cafe. matt keller is live at the restaurant. >> what a mess here. they still have caution tape up to keep people away. and they have the fire hydrant here that was sheered off. you can see one of the pieces broken off during the crash. then you have the newspaper stand that was knocked on its side. but this isn't even the worst of it. check this out. this is the restaurant, all this damaged stuff on the ground, and then when you come up to the door, they put up a sign saying somebody mistook us for a 24-hour drive-thru restaurant. we apologize for any inconvenience. check out the video of the vehicle behind all this damage. the red suv crashed into los gatos cafe early sunday morning. driver was taken to the hospital. she was stable. firefighters were on the scene checking out the structure. the entrance is severely damaged. the restaurant is usually open from 6:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and

at children's hospital in oakland after nearly drowning during a birthday party. neighbor lisa puckett shot this cell phone video of first responders tending to the boy yesterday afternoon. pckett actually heard the commotion and called for help. >> i was sitting outside on the porch right here and i seen the little boy fall in the pool. then i seen his mother jump in the pool after him. after they pulled the little boy out, they started doing cpr and i called 911. >> the boy eventually regained consciousness. a family members tell abc 7 news the boy will be okay. >> a controversial uc davis chancellor is coming back to campus. she left during the controversial pepper spraying incident that went viral in 2011. linda is going to return in the fall as a professor of electrical and computer engineering. she's going to teach women and gender studies. they're told she'll be paid $318,000 for a nine-month

contract. she resigned last august after accusations of ethics violations. she's best known of being in charge in this inms incident when campus police pepper sprayed occupy demonstrators in 2011. >> b.a.r.t. hopes a campaign they launched will protect phones especially near train doors and while waiting on the platform. riders will also notice an increase in audio announcements in trains and in stations. there have been 225 phone thefts so far this year. that's compared to 274 in all of last year. all right, let's see what's going on by opening up the weather window from south beach onto the bay bridge. it looks quiet, but as i was coming across a couple hours ago, i did run into some mist as i was heading into san francisco. watch out for that. mass transit will be mild to hot. small craft advisory today. look where it is.

it's east of the golden gate, north of the bay bridge. all the way through the delta from 3:00 to 9:00. we have a southwest wind at 15 to 25 minneapolis. if you're heading out in san francisco, temperatures are mainly 54 to about 56 degrees from west portal at 54 to potrero hill and the marina at 56. let's take a look elsewhere. you can see we've got a lot of 50s and 60s out there. nothing too extreme there. at the beaches if you're thinking about heading that way to get away from the heat, the inland heat, until 11:00 this evening, we still have a beach hazard for the south facing beaches. the most dangerous areas will be around santa cruz with the strong rip currents and sneaker waves. here's a look at something we haven't talked about in a long time. the air quality. today, fine. by wednesday, though, we're going to have another spare the air alert as some poor air quality is going to develop. a quick look at today's temperatures. 60s along the coast into san francisco. 70s and 80s around the bay. 80s and 90s inland. i'll show you your specific microclimates coming up next. here's alexis.

going to be pretty stubborn along the coast today. let's see what it does to your microclimate temperatures. in the south bay, quite a range. san jose, 88, to low to mid 90s in los gatos and gilroy. you head up the peninsula. we start in the low to mid 80s and drop to the mid to upper 70s. along the coast, mid to upper 60s for you until you get to sunset at 62. 70 in downtown san francisco. mid to upper 80s through most of the north bay. along the east bay shore, richmond, 71. oakland, 75. 83 in fremont. and the hottest temperatures inland, 94 to about 98 degrees from san ramon to brentwood. good news. look at this tonight. you will sleep easy. 55 in san francisco. to about 62 inland. places like antioch, out to the highway 4 corridor, discovery bray, brentwood, that will be the toughest to sleep. here's my seven-day forecast. the heat does peak, especially

inland, tomorrow at 100. look at that, 64 at the coast. wednesday, we're going to have high clouds that will help dim the sunshine and break the heat just a little bit. high clouds hang around thursday. the heat still hanging on inland. you can see the heat really starts to ease as we head towards saturday and sunday with temperatures in the upper 80s to low 90s there. 70 around the bay and 60s at the coast. not much of a roller coaster. we start high and go down as we head into the weekend. woke up this morning, drove outside, pretty clear, but as i got closer to san francisco, a lot of drizzle. any issue snz. >> i had fog on the bay bridge this morning, too. not many issues yet. we're looking into a problem possibly on southbound 680 in the benicia area. we have not been able to confirm this with chp, but boy, we heard about this on the scanners and we're see agslowdown on our traffic flow. i would say we probably have something here. this is southbound 680 near lake herman road. initially, we heard it was a roll-over collision and someone hit the vehicle that had flipped, but details few and far

between. if you're coming from the cordelia area and heading south to the benicia bridge, plan on a delay, maybe take the long way around and stick to 780 instead. a quick check of oakland. weologist have road work with a full closure of southbound 880 between 23rd and 29th. they should be done in less than 15 minutes, but if you're traveling through southbound 880 through the east bay, plan on a 10 to 15-minute delay. if you want to play it safe and you're not in a big rig, you can use eastbound 580. that's wide open right now. we'll look at pretty light drive times in a few minute. >> thanks. happening today, the beginning of the commercial salmon fishing season. a season that has some low expectations. right now, there are historically low numbers of adult chinook salmon in the river. they also say el nino affected ocean food sources. the take has been so poor, fishing groups plan to ask the governor to declare a disaster so they can seek federal aid. >> alameda county community food

bank says if you have time to do good, it really needs your help. organizers need 150 people to step up every week day to pack enough food to meet the needs of the community. only 24 people have signed up tomorrow, and there are entire days in august when not a single person is registered to help out. the biggest need is monday through friday, and summer is the time of greatest demand when kids do not have access to school meals. it's also the time when there is a lot less support. a proposal to delay start times in california schools getting a mixed response. a bill barring middle schools and high schools from starting earlier than 8:30 in the morning is making its way through the state legislature. supporters say it would give kids a better night's sleep and improve their performance. others worry it could turn family schedules into chaos. a final vote could come as early as next month. some bay area schools are already experimenting with the 8:30 start time. san alsell mow has adopted it as part of a pilot program.
