i'm not steve bannon, he said, launching into an attack so profane we can't repeat it on television. he said i'm not trying to build my own brand. the white house said the president, who's used some choice words himself in the past was none too happy about scaramucci's comments. >> the president certainly felt that anthony's comments were inappropriate for a person in that position. >> reporter: the communications direct had become the story. his words going viral. his gestures mirroring the president's mocked on "daild "ty show." he's made a point of saying he reports only to the president. scaramucci was in the back of the room. >> i predict that general kelly will go down in terms of the position of chief of staff one of the great ever. >> reporter: and the white house issuing a stunning shift in the chain of command. everyone, including the president's own daughter and son-in-law report to john kelly. >> general kelly has the full

he was killed while trying to help people inside an overturned vehicle. the vehicle is now under arrest. lieutenant allen is the first south fort indiana police officer ever to be killed in the line of duty. and there's more sobering news about the country's opioid epidemic. a new survey finds 92 million people took drugs like 11 million admitted abusing them. and there's a medical alert about cancer and gum disease in women. a new study finds women who have periodontal disease face risks of cancer such as esophageal and gallbladder cancer. researchers note more work is needed to determine why gum disease could promote cancer. that study only involved women. a baby seal and her mom had a family reunion on a beach in hawaii.

sworn in as the chief of staff and given free rein to carry out business as he sees fit. >> scaramucci's unceremonious departure follows including a profanity-laced rant about reince priebus. abc's megan hughes has more. >> reporter: white house chief of staff john kelly is charged with restoring order. anthony scaramucci who was in the back of the room as kelly was sworn in was in the crosshairs. >> i predict that general kelly will go down in terms of the position of chief of staff, one of the great ever. >> reporter: the controversial communications director known as the mooch quickly made waves. >> i love the president. >> reporter: attacking several senior white house officials in a tirade to "the new yorker," calling former chief of staff reince priebus a bleeping paranoid schizophrenic and tearing into strategist steve bannon with a profane attack. his words went viral. his gestures mirroring the

president's mock on "the daily show." ♪ the white house who says the president has used choice words himself in the past wasn't pleased. >> the president certainly felt that anthony's comments were inappropriate for a person in that position. >> reporter: white house press secretary sarah sanders took over from sean spicer. everyone including the president's daughter and son-in-law will now report to the chief of staff. >> general kelly has the full authority to operate within the white house and all staff will report to him. >> reporter: scaramucci made a point of saying he reported only to the president. president trump tweeting late monday, a great day at the white house. kendis, diane? >> our thanks to megan hughes. and attorney general jeff sessions is apparently no longer in the doinghouse. >> following days of blistering criticism, sessions sat right across from president trump yesterday as he convened his full cabinet.

just last week the president refused to say if he planned to fire the attorney general, but when asked about reports that sessions may be replaced, press secretary sarah sanders had this to say. >> there are no conversations about any cabinet members moving in any capacity, and the president has 100% confidence in all members of his cabinet. >> the president has expressed anger over sessions' decision to recuse himself from the russia investigation. >> abc news has learned last week that some senior white house aides were encouraging the president to move sessions to general kelly's old job of homeland security. and new this morning, senior white house sources tell abc that president trump personally dick indicated donald trump jr.'s misleading statement about the 2016 meeting with the russian lawyer, possibly putting himself in legal jeopardy. >> the story first reported by "the washington post" reveals top advisers wanted to be transparent about the meeting because they believed the truth would eventually come out, but they were overruled. >> they say the president crafted his son's statement on board air force one on the way home from the g20 summit

meeting. saying the meeting was predominantly about the adoption of russian children. donald junior released the e-mail saying he is was promised incriminating information on hillary clinton. and the u.s. has slapped sanctions on venezuela after the country's bitterly divisive election that gave its president unlimited powers. president nicolas maduro is celebrating his victory as a mandate from the people, but the u.s. government is calling him a dictator who disregards the will of the venezuelan people. >> he joins a very exclusive club, including mr. mogave, bashar al assad and kim jong-un in terms of the brutal repression of his people and, in this case, the abrogation of the constitution with the constitution -- with the assembly, constituent assembly. >> in a fiery televised address, maduro responded to the u.s. calling president trump an emperor, saying he's proud of the sanctions and warning mr. trump that his biggest mistake

in life will be messing with venezuela. back here at home, a surge of children dying in hot cars prompted congress to take action. lawmakers want technology in cars to alert parents when a child is left behind. so far this year, 30 children have died in hot cars. 11 of those deaths were last month. and senator john mccain is back home in arizona after his dramatic thumbs-down vote on the gop's health care bill. his office says senator mccain is getting chemotherapy for his brain cancer at the mayo clinic in phoenix. he's also set to receive radiation treatment. over the weekend, mccain shared a photo with his daughter tweeting old man and his daughter on the mountain. and what's left of tropical storm emily, now a tropical depression is slowly making its way across the florida peninsula. the bulk of the storm is moving over florida's atlantic coast. forecasters say it will blow out into the atlantic later this morning but not before slamming

the region with high winds and heavy rains. abc's gio benitez has the latest from ft. myers beach. >> reporter: tropical storm emily drenching the florida coast with over eight inches of rain. the governor now declaring a state of emergency in 31 counties, some 18,000 losing power. >> i urge you to keep alert, to local weather and road conditions. >> reporter: a construction worker shooting this video as emily moved ashore. those powerful winds shutting down the sunshine skyway bridge. the coast guard rescuing two brothers clinging to a navigation light in tampa bay. their fishing boat striking the structure and sinking during the storm. in bradenton, a race to find foster homes for rescue animals. >> a lot of rain real fast, dead flat property, and the sump pumps stopped working, so, we're trying to catch up. >> reporter: this tractor trailer losing control while

driving on slick roads in tampa, dangling over a highway overpass. part of a hotel roof ripped off in ft. myers beach. and just take a look. and we are still feeling the strong winds. south east florida could get more rains from the remnants of tropical form storm emily. gio benitez, abc news, florida. and a new jersey class action lawsuit has been filed against the construction company that accidentally cut power to the outer banks. it comes as state officials say it could take up to two weeks to restore power. about 50,000 visitors were forced to evacuate, and businesses are reporting losses of tens of thousands of dollars. one inmate is still on the loose after a mass jailbreak in alabama. a dozen inmates fled the walker county jail by using peanut butter. the sheriff said they used the peanut butter to trick a new jail employee. must have been some peanut butter. that employee mistakenly opened an outside door but thought it was a jail cell. 11 of the escapees were back in custody by monday morning. an intense manhunt continues for

bedroom door. he then ran off, as you heard the mother say. the mother also says that girl now wants to be a detective. police are offering a $1,000 reward for any information that leads to his capture. >> those eight minutes must have felt like eight hours for that mom. three sheriffs deputies in tennessee are accused of using excessive force on a suspect, tasering him repeatedly while already retrained. >> the video can be difficult to watch, as abc's adrian bankert has details on the lawsuit now stemming from the incident. >> reporter: three tennessee sheriff's deputies suspended after this grim surveillance video emerges. jordan norris, eyes wide open, writhing in pain, repeatedly tased while restrained. you can hear one deputy warn the young man. norris now suing, claiming excessive force. his lawyer says the then 18-year-old was suffering from a mental health episode, alleging

we expect emily out to sea. we are watching out for strong surf and strong rip currents from hilton head to myrtle beach all the way up to cape hatteras. not expect it to strengthen into hurricane strength but still causing problems. where we also have a problem, near record heat in the west. we have a retreating jet stream, near record heat, very warm throughout the west. scattered showers shifting to the east with the flash flood threat over portions of new mexico and into colorado. but that record heat's going to be a big problem for the pacific northwest. kendis, diane? >> paul, thank you. and now we turn to some big changes in president trump's inner circle. following a dramatic resignation of yet another top white house aide. >> the white house communications director, anthony scaramucci is out. he's gone just days after joining the administration. his brief tenure came to an abrupt end as retired general john kelly was sworn in as chief of staff to replace reince priebus. priebus stepped down on friday after scaramucci railed against

him to a reporter in a profanity-laced rant. >> look, the president certainly felt that anthony's comments were inappropriate for a person in that position. and he didn't want to burden general kelly, also, with that line of succession. as i think we've made clear a few times over the course of the last couple days to several of you individually, but general kelly has the full authority to operate within the white house and all staff will report to him. >> and she mentioned everyone in the white house will report to kelly, including the president's daughter ivanka and their son-in-law jared kushner. >> the president ended the day with these words, tweeting, a great day at the white house. >> i would hate to see a bad day at the white house. very busy day there. so scaramucci released a statement saying he felt it best to give the chief of staff a clean slate. >> sounds familiar. sources say that he was escorted from the white house grounds and abc news political director rick

klein joins us with a little insight on this. rick, good morning. >> diane and kendis, the mooch era is no more at the white house, as the trump administration copes with the latest in a series of devastating blows, staff turmoil that has almost no precedent in modern times. he is now -- scaramucci is now the third top official in just the past week and a half to leave. that includes, of course, two communications directors. we are told that the conduct that scaramucci showed in an interview he gave to "the new yorker" that included colorful language and quotes about his colleagues, combined with the fact that he reported directly to the president did not sit well with the brand new chief of staff john kelly. and therefore one of the first acts under john kelly is accepting the resignation of scaramucci. it leaves the white house in further chaos, but, you know, it may be the kind of chaos that suggests order down the road. the rarest of kinds. if john kelly can show this is the way his white house operates and if there isn't room for the kind of freelancing that scaramucci might been expected

for, that might show a new era in the white house. that is exactly what trump's allies are counting on. >> our thanks to rick klein there. it's been a busy seven months indeed. now the white house is defending the president's recent comments to police officers in new york. the president told the officers they shouldn't be too nice when arresting suspects. now critics say the president is encouraging police brutality. but his press secretary says the remarks should not be taken seriously. >> i believe he was making a joke at the time. >> you heard her there, saying she believes that he was making a joke. police chiefs across the country condemn the president's comments. they say he's sending the wrong message as they try to improve relations with the communities they serve. in arizona a man who called himself america's toughest sheriff is now facing a jail sentence. joe arpaio was found guilty for continuing to conduct immigration sweeps after being ordered to stop.

the 85-year-old could face up to six months in jail. he served as maricopa county for 26 years but was defeated in november. and new york jury deliberations resume today in the trial continued for martin shkreli, known for boosting the price of a life saving drug, but he's actually on trial for his conduct as a hedge fund manager. prosecutors say he looted his investors for a hedge fund he was running but his attorneys say that's not true. now to a close call over newark international airport. the crew of united airlines flight reported a drone flying dangerously close as their plane approached for a landing from zurich, switzerland with 249 passengers on board. now, get this. at one point, that drone was more than 1,000 feet in the air. the plane landed safely. the faa and new jersey state police are investigating that incident. a schoolteacher in indianapolis turned her wedding into a class project. >> she invited 20 of her kindergarten students and first
