for special offers now. repairs are quickly getting underway at a north bay school after a damaging fire last night. crews are working under a deadline as kids are set to return to school in just three weeks. thanks for joining us. i'm kristein sze. this fire broke out at dixie elementary school in san rafael, and we just got work from school officials on whether the start of the school year may be affected. abc 7 news reporter tiffany wilson is live at the scene. tiffany? >> hi, kristen. well, most of the construction workers are taking a lunch

break, but you can see some of the demolition work on the roof that's already underway. the building houses kindergarten, tk and first grade classrooms. now most of what is inside escaped damage remarkably. the superintendent believes that the classrooms inside will be ready for students on the first day of school. construction workers wasted no time ripping out the charred roof of dixie elementary building "a" this morning. >> it was my classroom and my friend emily. it was our building that was on fire. >> reporter: mimi reddick's classroom was full of materials for her new kindergarten class. >> put things into perspective when it's just stuff, but there was a lot of stuff. >> reporter: the fire started around 5:45 yesterday evening. thick smoke poured into the sky. >> we got a wild knock on door from some kids and they said their school is on fire, and i didn't believe them at first, but i looked into their eyes and i knew they were telling the truth so i got in my car and drove down. >> reporter: by the time marnie glickman arrived, firefighters

had everything under control. the fire chief says the roof was getting replaced, and extra rolls of tarpaper could be to blame. the superintendent surveyed the damage today. >> it looks like there's no structural damage, and the construction company and their tem is working extremely hard to get it back up to speed as quickly as possible. >> reporter: school starts august 24th, leaving parents to wonder what is in store for their children? the superintendent anticipates the classrooms will be ready. >> well, i believe in our community. i believe we can get it done and i'll have a time line from the construction company and we'll be talking about it this afternoon. >> if it's ready i'll be so thrilled. >> reporter: the superintendent is meeting with the construction company at 1:00 today, and he says even if worst case scenario for some reason, the classrooms are not ready for the first day of school, they have other options here on campus and elsewhere in the district. live in san rafael, tiffany wilson, abc 7

>> the oakland a's are investigating after a fight broke out last night in the stands in the first game of the bay bridge series against the giants. video appears to show a female security guard punching a fan. abc 7 news reporter matt keller is live at the coliseum. matt, the a's just released a statement. >> reporter: kristen, so far oakland police are not talking about this incident. they have not said whether or not someone was arrested last night, but we do know and just learned in the past hour that the security guard in the center of the conflict in the stands will not be working here at the oakland coliseum ever this video was shot by shane. he says he saw a female security guard and a woman in the crowd arguing. another security guard stepped in between the two, but the female security guard went into the row behind the fan and started to pull her hair and

punching her. shane also says another security guard grabbed the fan's friends hair as well. eventually the crowd started booing the female security guard pwho gave everyone the finger ad threw some type of liquid into the crowd. oakland police arrived on the scene to clear things out and restore order. both witnesses say it appears the security guards were the aggressors in this situation. and we just heard back from a spokesperson with the a's. she tells us they use a third-party security company called staff pro. staff pro used a subcontractor for last night's game called u.s. security associates, and that's who hired this security guard. oakland a's spokesperson says this individual will not return to work the a's game. fan safety is our utmost concern. as we stated last night, we do not tolerate violence, and we've referred to matter to the oakland police department. the a's and giants play tonight here at the oakland coliseum. the first pitch is at 7:05. reporting live in oakland, matt keller, abc 7 news. if you're looking for a place to escape the intensifying

directly to the jewelry cases. they used hammers to smash the glass and then they scooped up an estimated $50,000 worth of jewelry. they ran out of the store to an awaiting black chevy with temporary license plates. police are investigating whether the robbery is connected to similar incidents at other bay-area costcos. neighbors in santa clara hope you can recognize people they think might have been breaking cars at their condo complex. now, this is surveillance images at the condo complex at el camino real right by saratoga creek. the break-ins usually happen between 12:30 and 3:30 in the morning. residents tell us they are concerned because at least three people usually commit the crimes together. santa clara police are investigating. happening today, the contra costa county board of supervirusors will review a dozen applications for a new district attorney. the position became available in june after mark peterson resigned. a grand jury found peterson illegally spent campaign

donations on personal items and then lied about it. the board will choose finalists who will be invited to take part in a public forum in two weeks. the most qualified candidate will serve the remainder of peterson's term which expires in january 2019. now to a new bombshell out of washington. white house sources now reveal it was the president himself who drafted his son's misleading explanation about his meeting with the russian lawyer. this is all happening as the new chief of staff takes charge of the west wing. here's abc news reporter emily rau with the details. >> reporter: already a crisis for the new white house chief of staff john kelly. abc news confirming president trump personally dictated the misleading initial statement released by done jr. to the "new york times" that the meeting he, jared kushner and former campaign chairman paul manafort had with the number of russians was about adoptions and was not a campaign issue at the time. >> the president didn't sign off on anything.

elementary school. fremont police say they were in the area at the time investigating a residential burglary. they cannot confirm a connection between the burglary investigation and this crash, but you can see the car is almost totally inside the front of the house in that neighborhood. the cul-de-sac filled with police, and it appears police are putting someone in handcuffs. not sure again the relationship between this crash and possible burglary investigation nearby, but you can see once again police surrounding a man that they are putting in handcuffs and pudding him presumably into that police vehicle. this is all happening in fremont near nick let avenue. so we'll continue to follow this breaking news story and bring you more as soon as we get it. and more breaking news now, this one out of yuba county where two sheriff's deputies have been shot. the sheriff's department confirm the shooting happened this morning between the communities of oregon house and dobbins. the condition of the deputies not known right now, but
