good wednesday morning, i'm kendis gibson. >> and i'm diane macedo. here are some of the top headlines we're following on "world news now." the white house is denying it worked with fox news to spread a conspiracy theory about the death of a democratic staffer. the news channel is facing a lawsuit stemming from that story. we have a full report coming up. some republican lawmakers are now apparently ready to work with democrats on health care. the gop, head of the senate health committee is seeking bipartisan legislation to stabilize insurance markets and follows a threat from the president to end critical obamacare payments to insurers. the u.s. plans to exempt aid workers from the north korean travel ban. it starts on september 1st. it follows growing concerns for the safety of u.s. citizens traveling to the rogue nation.

and a great white off cape cod decided to take a bite out of a researcher's gopro camera. the 11-foot shark apparently quickly moved on. didn't like the taste of the gopro. >> yuck. >> those are some of our top stories on this wednesday, august 2nd. better the camera. from abc news, this is "world news now." >> good morning to you all. we begin this half hour with a flat denial from the white house over allegation that it joined forces with fox news to push a conspiracy theory to distract from the russia investigation. >> so fox is now facing a lawsuit, alleging the network fabricated quotes for a story about a murdered democratic staffer. the suit also claims that president trump personally approved the story before it was published. abc's tom llamas with the details. >> reporter: a new lawsuit with a bombshell accusation. the white house worked with fox news to spread a false story about a democratic staffer who was murdered. seth rich. he worked for the democratic

national committee. rich was killed in washington last year. his unsolved death sparking a right wing conspiracy theory that it was rich who leaked tens of thousands of dnc e-mails to wikileaks, not the russians. and some claim he was murdered because of it. in may, fox reported they had proof the conspiracy theory about seth rich, giving e-mails to wikileaks was real. >> if this is true, and seth rich gave wikileaks these dnc e-mails this blows the russia collusion narrative out of the water. >> reporter: but it was not true, and seth rich's parents were outraged. amid pressure, fox withdrew the story. the fox news story was largely based on statements from rod wheeler, a former homicide investigator investigating the case. but now he is suing fox, claiming his quotes were fabricated. he said he got involved after being contacted by a well-connected republican donor and trump supporter.

they went to the white house in april to discuss the seth rich story fox news was working on with then press secretary sean spicer. >> he said if he wanted to, he could put me in touch with the white house general counsel. >> reporter: not long after, spicer denied any knowledge of the fox news/seth rich story. >> i'm not aware, i generally don't get updates on former dnc staffers. >> reporter: but spicer did admit he had that meeting at the white house with that investigator and donor, calling the donor a quote, long-time supporter of the president's agenda, and the investigator now claims there was more from the white house. two days before fox aired the story, the investigator claims the donor left him this voice mail, saying the white house was on board with the story. >> i got a note that we have the full attention of the white house. on this. and tomorrow let's close this deal.

>> reporter: then this followup text about the fox news article before it was even published, quote, not to add any more pressure, but the president just read the article. he wants the article out immediately. the donor, the man in the middle telling abc news he's never even spoken to the president before. >> i didn't speak to anybody at the white house. i was being sloppy with my words. >> reporter: and the white house was pressed about that story that later outraged seth rich's own family. >> the president had no knowledge of the story and it's completely untrue that he or the white house had involvement in the story. >> reporter: we should note tha contributor to fox news. fox news tells us they have no evidence they ever misquoted him and as for the allegation that they published that story to help detract from coverage of the russia collusion issue, they call that completely erroneous. tom llamas, abc news, new york. sources say the president personally dictated donald trump

jr.'s response about the meeting with the russian lawyer to say it was about adoptions, but don junior revealed it was about to get dirt on hillary clinton. the white house's counsel denied he had anything to do with the statement. but yesterday the white house had a different story. >> the president weighed in as any father would, based on the limited information he had. he certainly didn't dictate, but he, you know, like i said, he weighed in offered suggestion like any father would do. >> the president ignored advice from aides who wanted him to be more detailed about the meeting and more forthcoming. the search for a suspect is now over. he was found dead inside a home. deputies were responding to reports of an armed and agitated man pulling a plant at a rastafarian church. pot farm north of sacramento.

the suspect was shot in a shootout with the deputies. the yuba county deputies are expected to make a full recovery. baltimore police officers appear to be planting evidence in this newly-released body cam video. at least seven officers are seen thoroughly searching a car and turning their cameras off and back on again. one officer seen placing something in the vehicle. and later they discovered drugs in that car. all charges have been dropped against the driver, who was arrested about two weeks ago. other body cam footage showed baltimore officers appearing to plant evidence in a different case. passengers describe it as a nightmare after being stuck on board a delayed flight for so long some of them ended up calling the police for help. the air-transit flight from brussels to montreal was diverted because of storms but it ended up sitting on the hot

tarmac for nearly six hours with no food, limited access to water, and at one point, no lights or even air conditioning. >> people were beginning to drain a wineglass full of water. there was no food. we give the last piece to a child. >> after more than four hours, emergency crews responded when someone finally called 911. the airline is blaming the airport for failing to provide loading bridges or stairs for passengers. but the airport said they had both a gate and stairs ready. it was the airline that never gave the green light to deplane. >> they all were, it was them, it wasn't me. so today's a big day. amazon is set to hire new employees on the spot today at job fairs across the country. the retail giant is looking to fill 50,000 open positions both full and part time at ten of its fulfillment centers. many of those positions will work in packing, sorting and customer service, but some will also fill the ranks of

♪ iran is turning the diplomatic tables on the united states, saying the u.s. has breached its own nuclear deal. it's complaining that new sanctions imposed by the u.s. contradict the nuclear deal they agreed to back in 2015. now president trump has called that agreement the worst deal ever. of course it was negotiated by president obama and then secretary kerry. the death toll is rising in venezuela after 124 consecutive days of violent demonstrations. >> they've been protesting president nicolas maduro's power grab with the white house now calling him a dictator. matt gutman takes us inside the chaos there. >> reporter: the descent into chaos is now accelerating.

caracas is the murder capital of the world. that's not all. its inflation is well above 1,000% and what was once the richest country in south america is now the world's largest oil reserves and now the world's worst-performing economy. at this super market, prices shockingly high. workers tell us they don't have the staples of venezuelan life. flour, bread, butter, sugar and milk. what everyone here knows is that we are all under the watchful eye of government-backed militias, but this one woman was so desperate to tell her story, she was willing to risk it all to follow us out. [ speaking in foreign language ] >> reporter: she says she's lost 30 pounds this year because there's not enough food. she wants the world to know, she says as she turns to the camera.

repression is the new normal. the every day threat of violence mixed with the complete failure of the government is forcing hundreds of thousands to flee. that's because the death toll here is on the rise. due to shortages of medicine and basic supplies, there are no antibiotics. the government has tightened its grip on the most vulnerable. hospitals are now under military control. we saw armed guards at the doors. doctors tell us they're not there to protect the patients

but to take control of any donations that might come in and to prevent journalists like us from reporting on what is really going on inside. in caracas, people told us if you really want to see how bad it is, go to the peripheries, cities like valencia. so we drove through the mountains from caracas to valencia to meet a doctor determined to show us the horrors inside a hospital. he doesn't want his name or face shown but he wants us to see what's going on inside the main hospital for this city of 2 million people. inside the pediatric ward, hospitals provide two things. they provide the bed and the doctor. everything else has to be provided by the patient. and then we saw these children. and it was already 11:00 at night. and all of them were moaning. writhing in their beds.

it's unclear what that dog was trained to sniff out. but after they found what looked like a can of iced tea, they cut the can open and assumed the white particles in the lining were cocaine. amanda was arrested and charged with trafficking cocaine. our affiliate cut open a can safe they purchased and white particles did fall out. and this is why brandon is calling his wife's arrest a huge misunderstanding. still in custody, but in this new video, laroque now says she's okay. brandon says authorities at the roatan airport don't have field testing kits for cocaine, so they're still awaiting lab results. lawmakers in north carolina are reaching out to the embassy in honduras for help. kendis and diane. >> what a mess. >> thanks to elizabeth there.

craft his son's statement about his meeting with the russians during the campaign. >> the president weighed in as any father would, based on the limited information that he had. >> reporter: don junior initially claimed he and the russian lawyer discussed adoptions and that it was not a campaign issue. then days later, e-mails revealed don junior agreed to the meeting because he was promised dirt on hillary clinton. for weeks, president trump's own attorney denied the president had any involvement with that original statement. >> the statement that was released on saturday was released by donald trump jr. and i'm sure in consultation with his lawyers. the president wasn't involved. >> reporter: but sources revealing to abc news the president dictated the statement himself, the "washington post" reporting the president ignored advice to be more transparent and truthful. >> he certainly didn't dictate, but he, like i said, he weighed in, offered suggestion like any father would do. >> reporter: the white house and the president now facing questions about his transparency with the american people.

>> president trump himself drafted a statement that's misleading that's a big problem for the white house who's been trying to say he's not been involved. >> reporter: don junior's story also changing when it comes to who was in the meeting, initially described as a five-person sit down, only later did we learn there were eight people in the room. kendis and diane. >> thank you. the senate has overwhelmingly approved christopher wray to lead the fbi. he fills the post from when president trump dismissed comey. wray was a high ranking official during the george w. bush administration. he asserted his independence and vowed to resign if he's ever asked to do anything unethical or illegal by the president. vice president mike pence says the president will sign a new bill this week, slapping russia with new sanctions, congress passed the bill last week with overwhelming support. it would limit the president's ability to lift it any sanctions against russia.

secretary of state rex tillerson said yesterday neither he nor the president believe these sanctions are helpful in efforts to deal with russia. >> the relationship, as you know, in russia continues to be under considerable stress. i think of the events of the last week or so, is it getting worse? or can we maintain some level of stability in that relationship and continue to find ways to address areas of mutual interest and ways in which we can deal with our differences without those becoming open conflicts as well. >> well, tillerson also said that the president calls him late at night on weekends when something comes into his head and he wants to talk. and he says the president's tweets are part of the environment. he said whatever the president chooses to express is news to everybody, us included. construction prototypes for the trump administration's border wall is delayed until at least the fall. that's because two companies have objected to the bidding

process. those complaints are being reviewed and a resolution could come as early as october. initial plans called for construction to start in san diego by june. meanwhile, homeland security is waiving dozens of environmental laws to help speed up the construction process. a man accused of shooting two deputies in northern california is now dead. the suspect was apparently shot while exchanging gunfire with the yuba county sheriff deputies. kenneth moton has the latest. >> reporter: the urgent manhunt for the suspect who shot two sheriff's deputies over. the gunman found dead. the gun battle breaking out in the california hills north of sacramento. deputies from yuba county responding to reports of an armed and agitated man pulling a plant in the garden of what investigators are calling a rastafarian church. the deputies hit, one taking multiple bullets. >> what's your condition? >> shot in the leg. shot in the shoulder. >> reporter: the suspect taking off on foot, triggering a mass

search and closing roads. and then word that suspect is dead. both deputies were airlifted to the hospital for surgery. the department says they are in serious condition. kenneth moton, abc news. >> our trangs to thank to kenneth there. the last of a dozen alabama inmates who escaped is back behind bars. brady kilpatrick was apprehended in florida they used peanut butter to hide the numbers on a door. that apparently caused a new jail worker to open an outside door believing it was just a cell. bad mouthing a wedding photographer will cost a texas couple $1 million. newlyweds accused the photographer of holding their wedding photos for ransom, demanding an extra $150, when they had already paid thousands. she sued saying the couple responded by spreading false

information about her on social media. that campaign caused her to close her business. the jury said that amounted to defamation. >> i felt completely dead. it was my passion. and i loved my clients, and i loved what i did. it was really hard. my reputation was everything to me. >> the couple is considering an appeal. she is hoping to now restart her photography career. miami beach is trying to dry out after heavy rains maid it look like miami lake. as much as five inches of rain swamped the city in 24 hours. it overwhelmed the storm drain system which was supposed to deal with three inches per hour. officials said the storm was of significantly higher intensity than it could deal with. it also knocked out power in some places. in florida the state has confirmed the first case so far this year of sexually transmitted zika virus.

the person's partner recently traveled to cuba. there is no evidence that zika is being transmitted through mosquitos anywhere in florida. and a little bit north, the timeline to restore power to the outer banks has been cut in half. officials say it should take a maximum of six days to repair a cable that provides service to thousands of customers on two islands. in the meantime, businesses in the popular tourist area have filed a class action lawsuit against the company that accidently cut the cable last week. it's a busy time for them. so you can understand. so seven priests walk into a bar and get kicked out. >> it does sound like the start of a joke, but it was just another day at a pub in the uk. the seven patrons strolled into a welsh bar dressed for work, but the barman turned them in away. he said the pub has a no-bachelor-party policy.

minutes before last friday's laun launch. the news comes as secretary of state tillerson calls for dialog with north korea, adding the trump administration does not seek a collapse of the north korean regime. martha raddatz has the latest. >> reporter: while north korea's test of an icbm that could someday hit most of the u.s. was sending shock waves around the world, the more immediate danger we are just learning was right in the area from where the missile was recklessly launched, in busy commercial airspace. as the missile was descending, flight data shows an air france 777 with 323 people on board, traveling from tokyo to paris, less than ten minutes after the plane passed northwest of okushiri island, the missile landed in the waters over which the plane had just flown. >> the crew of the plane had no idea the plane was in danger. the missile was coming in from outer space. if it had broken up in the air prior, it could have endangered

a much broader area. >> reporter: major airlines say they constantly analyze potentially dangerous flyover zones and air france says the flight was operated without incident, but the pentagon says north korea's missile launches into busy airspace and heavily traveled seas are done with no coordination. martha raddatz, abc news. the unarmed minuteman they is expected to launch from brandenburg air force base. it will be the fourth such test this year. at the san francisco airport, a teenager opened the emergency door and jumped onto the tarmac. the copa airlines flight had just arrived and was waiting to taxi when the incident occurred. the 17 year old boy was running on the tarmac when he was grabbed by construction workers on the airfield and later arrested by the police. authorities say he is a u.s. citizen, and they are look into that incident. a small plane crashed in phoenix. the pilot reported a mechanical

problem shortly after departing from the airport. the pilot was heading back to deer valley when the plane crashed through a fence and lodged into a tree. only two passengers were aboard. no word on what caused the crash. a mother says a school district didn't do enough to stop the cyberbullying that led to their daughter's suicide. they say rockaway township, new jersey school officials ignored repeated requests to help the sixth grader. malory took her own life in june. >> i would bring it to the school's attention, they would dismiss it. they would dismiss it. >> for months, she was told, she's a loser. she had no friends. and finally, she was even told, why don't you kill yourself? >> the grossmans have not ruled out suing the paints of the girls they say bullied their
