this fire has been small but smoky and stubborn nonetheless all day. the piggest problem has been the hilly terrain. >> abc 7 news reporter begins our live coverage tonight. >> reporter: firefighters are saying they are starting the get a grip on this fire. it's burned ten acres so far but it's only 10% contained. grizzly peak is completely shut down. you can see some of the smoke rising behind me in the berkeley hills. they are asking the public to avoid this area. itd roared into a five alarm blaze that ripped through the tall grasses and brush and trees up here in the hills sending an

ominous plume of smoke visible in all directions. this fire was within half a mile of territory burned in the fire storm. due to the fire's proximity to these high tension fire lanes the campus considered shutting down all power as a precaution. cal fire attacked by air dropping water and retardant. more than 150 fire personnel are battling this blaze. no structures were ever threatened but hundreds of grazing goats trapped in the path of fire were safely herded out. residents over the hill were warned to shelter in place if they are sensitive to smoke. firefighters made good progress along the berkeley side but hot spots are presenting challenges

along grizzly peak this dangerous, steep terrain. >> that was leslie brinkley reporting in the hills. >> uc berkeley warned of a pending campus wide power outage due to this fire but are saying that won't happen. >> reporter: within the last five minutes we learned the inspections of those lines are not necessary. later power outage is not anticipated either. that didn't stop people from putting up upcoming power outage warning signs around campus p many people chose to leave on their own all in an abundance of caution. let me show you sky 7 video. you can see the people choosing to evacuate the hill above the stadium and it caused quite a traffic backup. the botanical gardens closed for the afternoon. there are no mandatory evacuations, just a few recommended ones. some buildings closed in

anticipation of the power outage. you can see the sign letting people know that the disabled students program is closed for the afternoon. others left classes and study halls out of caution. >> it's always good to stay safe especially if there's a fire on top and the goal is to stay safe. that's number one priority especially when you're in campus like this. >> reporter: you can see for many students it's business as usual this afternoon. those that didn't have their buildings closed early and classes will resume tomorrow. campus life should be normal tomorrow. there's no anticipated power outages for tonight. >> thanks a lot winds have been an issue as firefighters worked to contain the fire. let's get over to meteorologist. >> it's still breezy in the area. i want to show you live doppler 7. it is picking up some of the smoke from that fire as you'll

notice. we show you the conditions. it's 86 degrees. it is dry there. 21% relative humidity and yes still breezy out at the south, southwest gusting to 14 miles an hour. over the next 24 hours expect gusty conditions to remain through the wee hours of morning before the winds taper. we want to talk about the heat advisory. it's been a hot day again inland and in the hills. a heat advisory has been extended until 9:00 p.m. tomorrow night. extended another day for the hills because overnight it's not going to cool off much and tomorrow will be another hot one. excess iive heat warning until 11:00 p.m. tonight. temperatures already 109 degrees this afternoon. i'll with back with a look at when you'll get some relief from this heat. it's coming and we'll talk about the chance of some thunder. frightening new information about the near miss at sfo. the ntsb says the air canada

flight was only 59 feet off the ground not 100 feet as earlier reported and closer to planes getting ready to take off. the plane disappeared for 12 whole seconds from a radar system designed to catch close calls like there one. >> the investigation is not yet over and despite this newly released information one retired pilot that we spoke with says the system is safe. >> reporter: the newly released ntsb pictures showed how close an air canada flight came to other aircraft on the taxi way at sfo last month. >> this was a disaster averted. >> reporter: the lane was just 59 feet from the ground. >> air canada flew directly over us. >> saw that. >> reporter: chris is a retired pilot. >> the fact that the united 787

that was number one on the taxi weight has a tail height of 56 feet, well it's alarming to take the difference between 59 and 56 but i think those aircraft were separate bid a significant amount. >> reporter: perhaps as much as 29 feet off to the side. the air canada pilot questioned light what is he saw believed was the runway. >> controller said there's nobody on the runway, you're clear to land. all of which was fact. the pilot was looking at the taxi way and not the runway. >> it's a very rare occurrence for pilots to lock onto a taxi way at night versus the runway. taxi lights are blue and runway lights are white. >> reporter: it was so off course that it hit a blind spot in the airport's radar system for 12 seconds. the radar system should have alerted air traffic controllers the aircraft was not where it's supposed to be. the united airlines radio the control tower to let them know

air canada was on the taxi way. >> as close as it was and potentially scary as it was, the whole thing worked. message to passenger, the system is safe. >> reporter: ntsb has not reach add final conclusion in its investigation. in san francisco, abc 7 news. tesla has announced an employee arrested for accidentally firing his gun at work no longer works there. police responded to the auto plant in fremo thrnt last night. he said he was clearing to gun to make sure it didn't have any bullets. it did. the bullet hit the floor. no one was hurt. he was charged with a concealed firearm. >> president trump is pro posing to curtail legal immigration. he's clear about who will be favored under the process. >> this competitive application process will favor applicants who can speak english,

it happened along eastbound highway 24 between fish ranch and wilder roads. one car hit a cow and the car was hit by another car. the cow died. this is the second crash caused by a car. the other one happened june 26th in the same area. cows often graze on hills in the area. a traffic tie up on the golden gate bridge today after an rv hit the toll plaza and got stuck. marin chp posted these pictures on facebook. the rv door was ripped off and the people inside could get out. the chp says the two people in the rv suffered very minor injuries and were treated at the scene. both wide lanes were closed but traffic is flowing again this evening. the city of san francisco is finding a bill that would create statewide business licenses for

ride share drivers. the bill is backed by both uber and lyft. right now drivers have to have a separate license for every city they drive in. the san francisco license costs $91 and help cover the impact of the city's infrastructure. san francisco says 70% of ride share drivers come from other cities and not having that ref new would heurt the city. drivers say the cost of so many separate businessm elon musk just broke its speed record. the higher loop one reaching 192 miles an hour in the nevada desert. it traveled farther than ever before. more than 1400 feet. he hopes the electric propulsion powered pod can get people from new york city to washington in half an hour. studies show employees over 55 years old are more likely than younger workers to die from

>> some changes on live doppler 7. i want to show it to you now. we have the usual fog. what we're tracking are some thunderstorms in southern california and the sierra nevada. this is monsoonal moisture that's coming in from the south. the reason we're tracking it carefully, take a look at the moisture that's southwest of mon mon monterey. there's been some lightning strikes. there's certainly a chance as we head into the overnight hours and into tomorrow. it's been a hot day. look at the temperatures. triple digits concord. 74 in san francisco. 92 san jose. 95 santa rosa. these are highs so far and a comfortable 66 in half-moon bay. may not have been feeling so comfortable in those high clouds adding humidity to the air.
