flames and thick smoke that sent firefighters rushing into the berkley hills to try to prevent a major disaster. tonight the fire danger is not over yet. i'm dan ashley. >> and i'm ama daetz. hot temperatures across the bay area will continue tomorrow adding to the fire concern. we have live team coverage tonight. >> that's right. let's begin with "abc 7 news" meteorologist sandhya patel and the heat add sliceory that has been extended to you. >> yeah, dan and ama. the heat advisory for the hills has been extended until 9:00 p.m. tomorrow night. heat aid visory ill unless is possible. this also has been extended now until 11:00 p.m. tomorrow night. dangerous heat up, to 108 degrees in that area. live doppler 7 is tracking some changes and those changes include some moisture just off the coastline here. this could translate into a shower or a thunderstorm. i will be back with the details hour-by-hour look coming up, dan. >> sandhya, thanks very much. to the developing news the

berkley hills, sky 7 shows the scene after a grass fire spread through thick vegetation this afternoon. you can see how sbenls it was. this is near the area devastated by the oakland hills firestorm more than 25 years ago. you can imagine there were nervous neighbors. lilian kim is live on grizzly peak boulevard with the latest on the situation. lilian. >> reporter: dan, fire crews are making sure those hot spots don't flare up, but it has proven to be quite a challenge, so much so one firefighters was sent to the hospital. that firefighter tumbled 50 feet. he was up on the hillside when he encountered a hornet's nest. he is in stable condition at the hospital but his injury is a reminder what crews are up against as they work to contain the fire overnight. >> it is very steep terrain. it is rugged, and so it is hazardous to the firefighters and it is exhausting for them. so they have the take things a little slower. >> reporter: the fire began near

"abc 7 news" reporter katie utehs picks up the story live in richmond. katie. >> reporter: ama, the witness who recorded that video tells me that he saw the man holding a machete and that he also heard officers tell the man to drop the knife repeatedly. he did not want to be identified but witnessed that shooting as we saw. officers are still on scene tonight, more than five hours after the initial shooting, but a tow truck did arrive just moments ago to remove some of the vehicles involved. sky 7 shows a knife lying on richmond parkway. it is the scene of an officer-involved shooting. a man suspected in an armed robbery also lies dead nearby following a high-speed chase and confrontation with vallejo police officers. >> i was right at the light at the bus stop. >> she says she saw patrol vehicle push the suspect's car around 5:20. >> it was like boom into the

wall. >> the suspect exited the vehicle and he was armed. >> reporter: she backed away from the scene but said she heard many shots. police lieutenant confirms multiple officers fired. >> there were more than one vallejo police officer involved in this. >> reporter: this all started two weeks ago when el is a reto police put out an alert searching for an armed robber in an associated vehicle. >> the vehicle was tagged as being wanted in an armed robbery. the officers from vallejo police department picked up the car. >> the driver fled on interstate 80, exited at bloom drive and turned on to richmond parkway. the shooting snarled the evening commute. police have not released the man's name. both richmond p.d. and the contra costa county d.a.'s office are investigating. if richmond, katie utehs, "abc 7 news." in watsonville, three cars crashed outside a pinata stree

on freedom boulevard this afternoon. two of the cars ended up inside the store. seven were hurt including four children inside the store. everyone will be okay, that's the good news. police say speeding was a factor here. they arrested a 16-year-old boy on suspicion of reckless driving causing injuries and for driving without a license. we have new details on the close call at sfo last month. federal investigators say the air canada plane was even closer to planes getting ready to take off than previously thought. >> the plane also dils appeared from radar for 12 seconds. "abc 7 news" melanie woodrow dills into the latest federal report. >> reporter: these newly released ntsb pictures show how close it was last month, an air canada pilot mistaking it for a runway. >> this was a disaster averted. >> reporter: ntsb says the air canada plane was 59 feet from the ground.

chris ringold is a retired pilot. >> the fact that it had a tail height of 56 feet, it is alarming to take the difference between 59 and 56, but i think the aircraft were separated laterally by a significant amount. >> the air canada questioned said he saw what he believed was the runway. >> it is a rare occurrence for a pilot to lock on to taxi way instead of runway. >> reporter: according to the report, the air canada flight was so off course it hit a blind spot in the radar system for 12 seconds. it should have alerted air traffic controllers the aircraft was not where it was supposed fob. a united airline pilot radioed the control tower to let them know air canada was descending on the taxi way. >> as close as it was and as potentially scary as it was, the

new tonight, three people were rescued from a bunky jump right ride at the ventura county fair. one was hanging upside down. two others were in a cage. the two in the cage were there for more than an hour while crews figured out how to get them down. the men attached themselves to harnesses and were able to rappel on a rope and pulley system to the ground. no one was hurt. fair officials say they're trying to figure out exactly what went wrong with this ride. president trump is endorsing a bill aim at slashing legal immigration levels. the proposal would push skill workers and english speakers to the front of the line and limit admissions based on family connections. white house adviser stephen miller clashed with reporters at a briefing today including cnn's jim acosta over a poem on the statue of liberty. >> give me your tired, your hud
