good morning, i'm diane macedo. >> i'm kendis gibson with some of the top stories we're following this thursday morning. two people are dead and several injured after a natural gas explosion at a school in minneapolis. construction workers may have ruptured a gas line, causing a blast and the portion of the school to collapse. attorney general jeff sessions is staying put for now. sources say john kelly called sessions to tell him that his job is safe. that assurance follows a wave of stinging criticism from president trump. the pacific northwest facing another day of unprecedented temperatures. the hottest in nearly a decade. today could see potential triple digits. all-time highs, including 107 portland and 112 for medford, oregon.

after 65 years on the job, prince philip is now retiring. the 96-year-old made his final solo appearance before heading off from some of his duties. these are some of our top stories on this thursday, august 3rd. from abc news, this is "world news now." good morning to you all. we start this half hour off with a deadly gas explosion at a minneapolisc officials at minnehaha academy are saying on facebook that those killed were receptionist ruth berg and john carlson, a janitor at the school. >> carlson's body was pulled from the rubble just a few hours ago. he was the only person unaccounted for after the blast. he graduated from that school in 1953 and returned to work there after retirement. here's abc's alex perez. >> reporter: the huge section of this private school in minneapolis reduced to a pile of rubble. >> we have windmills that were

blown out, flames and fire. and building collapse as well. >> reporter: around 10:20, the school administrators and several students inside minnehaha academy, basketball and cross country practice just wrapping up when suddenly a massive explosion entirely guts the middle of the school building. >> there was a huge explosion, smoke went up, knocked most of us kind of back and knocked me off my feet and kind of fell back. >> reporter: the blast, officials say, triggered when a crew accidently pierced a gas line. >> they were smelling gas, we need everybody out, and it was literally seconds after that that there was a big explosion. >> reporter: first responders rushing in searching for survivors. >> crews are working on extinguishing the fire at this time and searching for unaccounted people who may be trapped under the collapse. >> reporter: outside, horrified parents waiting for any word on their kids inside. the school janitor surviving the

ordeal, his head bandaged, reuniting with his wife. nine rushed to the hospital. the receptionist, ruth berg killed in the explosion. her fiance says their wedding invitations came in the mail yesterday. >> the people there are beloved and this is a big loss for the city today. >> reporter: authorities are working to make the scene as safe as possible for investigators. we've also learned the receptionist who was killed worked at the school for 17 years and always greeted everyone with a smile and will be missed. alex perez, abc news, minneapolis. >> and more than three dozen children have been sickened in durham, north carolina, by a chemical leak at an indoor pool. two adults were also affected when chemicals used to disinfect the pool at the ymca somehow reacted with each other and released noxious fumes. most were sent to the hospital and treated and released. six of those injured, all children, were reported to be serious, but not life threatening. fire officials say the leak appears to have been caused by a mechanical issue.

venezuela's president is accusing the international software firm that questioned voter turnout of being part of a u.s. campaign to cast doubt over the election results there. the country's electoral council claimed more than 8 million people voted and nicolas maduro now says 2 million more would have cast ballots if they hadn't been blocked by protesters. they are under way to rewrite the constitution. many are saying they now formed a new dictatorship there and they vowed to create a more socialist state. president trump is pushing a new immigration reform plan that would reduce the number of legal immigrants by 50% over ten years. the proposal ignited a fierce debate in the white house briefing room over the statue of liberty's true meaning. abc's mary bruce has details. >> reporter: eager to tackle a key campaign promise, president trump made a surprise push to overhaul the nation's immigration system. >> this legislation demonstrates

our compassion for struggling american families. >> reporter: standing with two republican senators, the president embraced their bill to slash legal immigration in half. the bill pushes skilled workers and english speakers to the front of the line and limits admissions based on family connections. steven miller, one of the president's top advisers called it a sea change. >> what president trump has done today is one of the most important legislative moves that we've seen on this issue in many, many years. >> reporter: but miller was challenged on whether the bill lives up to american values. >> the statue of liberty says give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses. it doesn't say anything about speaking english or being able to be a computer programmer. >> i don't want to get off into a whole thing about history here, but the statue of liberty is a symbol of liberty and lighting the world, a symbol of american liberty lighting the world. the poem you're referring to was added later. it's not part of the original statue of liberty.

>> reporter: and what about protections for dreamers, undocumented immigrants brought to the u.s. as children. the president told david in january that announcement was coming soon. >> will they be allowed to stay? >> i will tell you over the next four weeks. >> reporter: 27 weeks later the white house says they still department have an answer. and right now this immigration bill doesn't seem to be going anywhere. it lacks support even from republicans. the president is trying to give this bill a boost, but congress has a full plate of priorities and right now immigration reform is not on the schedule. mary bruce, abc news, capitol hill. >> our thanks to mary. and the president, his approval rating hitting an all-time low. a new quinnipiac poll found only a third of americans approve of the president's performance. his disapproval rating jumped 17 points to 61%. with pretty much all undecided voters from january turning on him. more than 60% do not believe the president is honest, and 71%

don't think he's level-headed. a pioneer of hip-hop has been charged with murder in new york. nathaniel glover known as kidd creole is accused of stabbing a homeless man to death. they say he argued with john jolly before allegedly stabbing him. it's not clear what started the argument. and a woman found guilty in a controversial texting suicide trial faces sentencing today. in june, michelle carter was accused of encouraging her boyfriend to commit suicide in dozens of text messages. she was 17 when conrad roy was found dead of carbon monoxide poisoning in 2014. she faces up to 20 years in prison for the involuntary manslaughter conviction. more than 150 firefighters are battling a stubborn brush fire. in california's bay area. it forced uc berkley to shut

blasting the bill as seriously flawed. >> the president opted against a public signing ceremony, as he lashed out at lawmakers over the legislation which prevents him from lifting the sanctions without congressional approval. abc's cecilia vega has more on that and the president's credibility being called into question. >> reporter: president trump so often criticized for being too soft on the kremlin, reluctantly signed into law tough new sanctions on russia, but for someone who seems to so enjoy a signing ceremony, the white house kept this one behind closed doors, away from the cameras. the president signing it but issuing scathing words at the same time. calling the legislation seriously flawed. and when we asked him about it. >> mr. president, why are the russia sanctions seriously flawed? >> reporter: no comment. congress had boxed the president into a corner. the bill passed by an overwhelming veto-proof majority. democrats and republicans. the president said he signed it for the sake of national unity, but in written statements he slammed lawmakers, saying they

included a number of clearly unconstitutional provisions, adding i built a truly great company worth many billions of dollars, as president i can make far better deals with foreign countries than congress. senator john mccain from arizona where he is undergoing cancer treatment saying i hope the president will be as vocal about russia's aggressive behavior as he was about his concerns with this legislation. the president also facing tough questions about his own behavior after using a boy scouts jamboree last week to vent about politics. >> we won florida. we won south carolina. we won north carolina. we won pennsylvania. >> reporter: the president told "the wall street journal" the head of the boy scouts personally called him to say it was the greatest speech that was ever made to them, and they were very thankful. but the political tone of that speech angered so many the boy scouts were actually forced to issue an apology. they said there was no phone call from scout leadership to

the white house. the presidents also says he got a call from mexico's president praising his work on the border. >> the president of mexico called me, and he said their southern border, very few people are coming, they know they're not going to get through our border. >> reporter: but mexico says nope, that call didn't happen either. we asked the white house, did president trump lie? >> on mexico, he was referencing a conversation that they had had at the g20 summit. in terms of the boy scouts, multiple members of the leadership following the speech that day followed him, praised him. >> reporter: but the president said he specifically received a phone call. >> they were direct conversation. not phone calls. >> reporter: so he lied. >> i wouldn't say it was a lie. that's pretty bold accusation. it's a conversation took place that didn't take place over a phone call. he had them in person. >> i do not envy sarah sanders in those positions.

construction crews may have ruptured a gas line causing a blast and a portion of the school came crashing down. just hours ago the only person not accounted for was removed from the rubble of that academy. the man still missing was john carlson, a part-time janitor who also attended the school as a child and ruth berg, a receptionist at the school for 17 years also killed. >> this is a day of extraordinary heartbreak in minneapolis. the school is at the heart of a neighborhood and the heart of a community. this school is beloved. the people there are beloved. and this is a big loss for the city today. >> and overnight, neighbors and friends gathered at a church to honor the victims. several others were also injured, and four remain in the hospital, including one person in critical condition. residents of a small town were forced to leave their homes after a train carrying toxic chemicals derailed in western

pennsylvania. tankers with propane and molten sulphur caught fire. it was heading from chicago to new york when it crashed in the tiny town of hyndman. no word yet on what might have caused that incident. former fbi director james comey has signed a book deal estimated to be worth over $2 million. the publisher says comey will write about leadership and decision making and share previously unheard anecdotes from his long career in government. it's expected to include the investigation into hillary clinton's private e-mail server and the accusations of ties between russia and donald trump's presidential campaign. the still-untitled book is due out next spring. so mad props to this couple here. you have to give respect to those who know how to get down. >> like us. >> yeah, except they're better

this was the scene in central washington town where a fire that destroye where a fire that destroyed vehicles and outbuildings is being blamed on a cat. a cat apparently climbed up a power pole. and this is the second fire in the area started by a cat. >> what? >> in less than a month. believe it or not. and this comes as firefighters across the west are battling at

least 48 fires fueled by a heat wave. in missoula, montana a second firefighter has died after being hit by a tree. that one's grown to more than 6300 acres. these fires are being fueled in part by scorching temperatures across the northwest that could set all-time highs. >> who knew there were arsonist cats out there. new video of a driver slamming his car into a police officer. the officer is okay. matt lessle was on a traffic stop when the car crashed into him, tossing him into the air. he said it felt like he was in a washing machine. he landed in the road and was able to move out of the way as other cars zoomed past. he fractured a vertebrae and will be off the job understandably for at least a month. the driver of the car has been charged with intoxicated assault. he is urging drivers to slow down and move away when driving past traffic stops. >> it's amazing to see him get up in the video. and we turn now to what appears to be a new case of carbon monoxide in a police cruiser. >> this time a massachusetts officer passing out behind the wheel, crashing into another

vehicle. his cruiser is a ford explorer suv. here's abc's david wright. >> reporter: another case of an officer passing out behind the wheel and having an accident, allegedly after unsafe exposure to carbon monoxide. this crash happened in newport beach, california, the new case in auburn, massachusetts. >> he'd just been involved in an accident and had passed out and hit another vehicle. >> reporter: the auburn officer lost control, struck a car at a stop sign and wound up in a church parking lot across the street. he's been hospitalized. so has a second officer who also tested positive for carbon monoxide exposure. it's the latest in a series of troubling incidents involving late-model ford police suvs. the austin, texas police department took nearly 400 vehicles off the streets after officers there reported getting sick from the fumes. ford says it is sending

engineers to auburn to inspect their vehicles and modifications made to them. ford says that it's the modifications that police departments make to those vehicles that may be the cause of the problem because they have drill holes in order to install equipment that officers need. in any case, ford says it will fix all of the vehicles that are experiencing problems. meanwhile, federal highway safety officials are also sending investigators. david wright, abc news, new york. coming up in our next half hour. thousands of americans turning up at job fairs across the country vying for 50,000 amazon jobs. but first, ditch the big wedding without ditching the big moments. we'll tell you about the latest trend in weddings. that's coming up on "world news now."

last night tweeting i love the white house, one of the most beautiful buildings, homes i have ever seen, but fake news said i called it a dump. totally untrue. two u.s. service members have been killed after their convoy was attacked in southern afghanistan. military officials say a suicide bomber hit the convoy of international troops in kandahar. the taliban quickly claimed responsibility for that attack. the two deaths brings the total number of u.s. service members killed in afghanistan this year to nine. an investigation under way in durham, north carolina where it forced the evacuation of the downtown ymca and closed surrounding streets. most were treated and released at the hospital. the chemicals used to disinfect the pool released the noxious
