clouds that are developing. first, i'll show it to you on live doppler 7 and while you were sleeping, some of those thunderstorms we talked about, they developed over the ocean, and they're moving away from us right now. here's the cool cloud deck i was talking about. look at that from pier 15. a quick look at the 12-hour day planner. 57 to 72. in the mid 60s at the coast, upper 70s for the better part of the day around the bay and hanging out at the 90s inland. we'll turn it over to traffic and see how the morning commute is with alexis. >> looking at the peninsula, looks like the crash we had briefly on northbound 101 has been pushed off to the side, so speeds starting to improve. also some good news in emeryville, westbound 80, the connector to eastbound 580, we had cones up in and the left lanes it looks like has cleared and drive times improving. i also want to show you video. everybody is okay. just keep that in mind. but check this out. i will explain how that car ended up in that position. >> goodness gracious.

>> looks like an interesting magic trick. >> probably not one you want to do behind the wheel, but they pulled it off. >> good morning, everyone. it's thursday, august 3rd. i'm matt keller in for reggie. >> i'm natasha. we have the whole team here. you heard from alexis and mike. jessica also joining us. we want to get to developing news in the berkeley hills because fire crews are keeping a close eye for flare-ups. this 20 acre fire causing major concern because of how close it was to where the oakland hills fire started 20 years ago. >> lonny rivera is live with what's happening now. >> reporter: yes, there's still a road closure here at lomas contavs and grizzly peak boulevard as crews are up the hill keeping an eye on hot spots. here's a look at the fire, which started near the lawrence berkeley national lab yesterday afternoon. the flames burned 20 acres, and the steep, grassy terrain made it challenges for firefighters.

one firefighter fell 50 feet when he encountered a hornet's nest. he's in stable condition, but his fall is a reminder of how dangerous it is for firefighters. >> it's very steep terrain. it's rugged, so it's hazardous to the firefighters and exhausting for them. so they have to take things a little slower. >> crews will continue mopping up throughout the day. the cause of the blaze is under investigation, and again, this area of lomas contavas closed off for much of the day. live here in berkeley hills, abc7 news. >> thank you. developing news, abc7 news obtained cell phone video showing the seconds leading up to a deadly police shooting yesterday. >> vallejo police officers opened fire shooting and killing a man. we're going to show you the video. we want to warn you, it is difficult to watch and we will not show you the moment of the actual shooting. >> oh, [ bleep ]. oh, [ bleep ].

[ gunshots ] oh, my god. oh my [ bleep ] god. >> that suspect has been identified as a 45-year-old benicia resident. sky 7 was over the scene on richmond parkway. investigators say this all began when officers attempted to stop a car suspected to be connected to an armed robbery in el cerrito last week. a high-speed chase ensued for 15 minutes before ending in richmond. authorities say the suspect was holding a machete and refused orders to drop the weapon. five officers opened fire hitting the suspect several times. he died at the scene. >> the owner of a san jose art museum studio faces charges of producing child pornography. police believe the man hid a camera inside the restroom of his business. nguyen owned the enlightenment

studio near mckee road. detectives claim the hidden camera captured illicit images of a child under the age of 10. the fbi is now examining images captured by the camera. at least one nearby business owner called the charges shocking. >> 6:04 now. happening today, a man will appear in court to answer charges he captured video of a couple having sex and then trying to extort them for cash. this man shared an apartment with the victims earlier this year. the victims say they began receiving e-mails in june and those messages contained intimate screen shots of them. the sender threatened to tag them on facebook unless they paid $5,000. a judge now must decide if there's enough evidence to try three former san francisco officials on corruption charges. prosecutors claim the evidence against them emerged during a federal probe of chinatown gang leader raymond shimp boy chow. the three suspects are former

human rights commissioner nazi mohodger, former commission staff member zula jones and former school board president keith jackson. >> happening today, neighbors frustrated with illegal dumping in oakland will get an update on what the city is doing about it. here's a glimpse of the problem. neighbors say people are using city streets as their personal dumping ground. this includes abandoned cars, dirty clothes, even dead animals. officials will update the public on what the city of oakland is doing to keep the trash out. town hall starts at 6:00 tonight. >> happening today, several city leaders and students will celebrate frutuition at city college of san francisco. it begins with a rally in u.n. plaza at 11:30, and free tuition appears to be attracting more people to city college. the examiner reports enrollment is up 17% from this time last year and that includes a 25% jump for courses that earn credits towards a degree. you can still sign up for classes at city college. registration closes on august 18th. >> caltrain's board of directors

is schedued to vote on a proposed fare increase today. last month, the board listened to people voice concerns about the plan at a meeting in san carlos. they want to raise ticket prices 25 cents per zone. it would cost riders an extra $1.50 to go one way from san francisco to san jose. if approved, moe of the fare changes would take effect on october 1st. caltrain is trying to cover $10 million deficit. >> anchor brewing company has been making beer in the bay area for more than 120 years. who just bought out the san francisco staple. >> anthony scaramucci is about to speak for the first time since being fired at the white house communications director. >> live look at the bay bridge toll plaza. the sky getting lighter and that backup as we expect this time of morning. morning. we'll

up on air. thanks a lot, and thank you in advance. let's talk about what's going on. heat advisory continues until 9:00 this evening for our hills and mountains. areas that are still in the 80s this morning. check out the monsoon clouds there and the wonderful dance they're doing with the sunshine. colorful morning out there. another thing you can take a picture of it and hash tag it abc7 now. if you're on the bay, light breezes once again. let's take a look around the state. 104, fresno. we have a chance of thunderstorms here, but a better chance to our south and east in the mountains. 95 in yosemite, 86 in tahoe. the chance of a thunderstorm in tahoe gets better saturday and sunday. a greater look at our chance and our heat, that's about to leave us, in the accuweather seven-day forecast. let's get an update from alexis. >> three main trouble spots this morning and they're all starting to improve. that's the good news. here's a look at westbound 80 from emeryville. the connector to eastbound 580, we had a lane closed until about 15 minutes ago.

that was having a ripple effect onto westbound 80. those speeds really starting to pick up and we're up to about 25 minutes between highway 4 and the maze. that's not terrible, just a couple minutes over average. we had this clash for close to an hour just before the toll plaza on the san mateo bring. we got the all clear. that two-car crash is gone. the peninsula also improving. we'll look at that at 6:20. >> thank you. new this morning, anchor brewing is getting a new owner. japanese sapporo is acquiring the iconic san francisco brewery. both companies have a whole lot of history. they're both over 100 years old. anchor brewing is known for its anchor steam beer. it's credited for actually starting the craft beer movement here in the u.s. sapporo said in a statement that acquiring anchor brewing is expected to accelerate growth in the u.s. the price of the deal has not been disclosed. >> dangerous change that a lot of passengers are making when they're riding an uber or litt. >> also, east bay's finest green

this just in. a story making national headlines. we have learned several manhole covers were blown off the

streets of detroit overnight. all because of an underground cable failure. luckily, no one was hurt. one cover was blown onto the roof of a hotel ten floors up. several restaurants and hotels were evacuated in the area overnight. those evacuation orders were just lifted a short time ago. this video from our colleagues in detroit. underground pressure near the cable that failed caused several explosions all around the city, but things are okay now. back to you. >> all right, thank you. we haven't heard the last of the mooch, apparently. fired white house communications director anthony scaramucci plans to hold an online event tomorrow. all we know about it is that he plans to use that time to communicate directly to president trump's base. cnn obtained a memo that outlined some of his goals. he was fired after 11 days on the job. he says after tomorrow's event, the plan is to avoid the spotlight at least until september when he will announce his next bick move. >> ford is trying to figure out

why some of its explorers are leaking carbon monoxide. it started yesterday when three officers in massachusetts were hospitalized for carbon monoxide exposure. one passed out while driving and hit another car. police in galveston, texas, have pulled all their explorers off the road so ford could look for leaks. 1.3 million ford explorers from 2011 to 2017 are now in question nationwide. ford issues this statement, quote, the company has discovered holes and unsealed spaces in utilities that had police equipment installed after leaving ford's facility. >> it's a habit for most of us, buckling up when we're driving, but what about when we ride in the back seat of someone else's car or use uber or lyft? seat belt use is lower for people who use a taxi or ride hailing service. they conducted a test, says drivers are twice as likely to be killed in a crash when the person behind them is not buckled up. >> if you are a green day fan, you'll be excited about this.

gorgeous. partly sunny stormthet today. tonight, mild to warm storm threat continues. nothing to stress about there. let's talk about live doppler 7. while you were sleeping, some of the moisture snuck in. radar returns look impressive. nothing i can find is reaching the ground. it's just too dry below 10,000 feet. we could have a thunderstorm today, and it not rain. small chance. mid to upper 60s. on the peninsula, boy, pretty mild for you. even the upper 50s at the coast are pretty mild. we have mid to upper 60s along the east bay shore. 72 right now in san jose. san ramon, still 80 in antioch, and even the north bay is warm by your stands. napa, 62, and san rafael, 67. mid to upper 90s, still hot in the inland east bay neighborhoods. we'll have warm to hot temperatures from mid 80s to low 90s in the north bay. in the south bay, temperatures going to run around 90 in san jose to about 95 in gilroy. but cupertino, 87. not bad there. on the peninsula today, we'll have temperatures from 75 in

millbrae, 80 at san mateo to 85 in palo alto. along the east bay shore, slightly humid and temperatures running from 77 at berkeley, 79 in oakland, to about 86 in fremont, and our last stop, san francisco, from the marina, 69, to downtown in the mission at 70, to the richmond at 67. tonight, mid 50s to mid 60s for lows once again. we'll have 70s in the south bay and in the east bay valleys. notice temperatures keep dropping. we'll be back to average by sunday and smooth sailing with morning clouds and afternoon sunshine monday, tuesday and wednesday. all right, alexis. i have to know more about the video of the car you showed us. >> take a look at your screens. this is from connecticut. that car ended up tangled in power lines after a crash during stormy weather. somehow, the woman behind the wheel drove up a support wire and ended up tangled in the power lines. the woman and her two kids are okay, but not something you see every day, and certainly not anything you want to experience yourself as a driver. thankfully, we don't have anything like that on the roads right now. let's look atture traffic maps.

we're starting to improve on the peninsula. at least on the northbound side. we had late road work and then a crash within that backup. northbound 101 approaching broadway. that's gone. still delays though on southbound 101. sounds like paving work going late as you travel between san bruno and burlingame, down to 8 miles per hour. quick check of the bay bridge toll plaza. metering lights on since just after 5:30 this morning, so a little later start, but making up for lost time now, and a quick check of mass transit, b.a.r.t., no delays. train 520, reports of a delay at emeryville due to a train kwement problem. and golden gate fairy, reduced capacity vestal this week, so the 7:50 morning larkspur trip is going to sell out so get there early. >> thanks. this is pretty unbelievable. did you see that moment on airport surveillance video when lightning hit a plaep at a florida airport. an airport worker was there, and he suffered third degree burns all over his body and bleeding

machete raised overhead. he then refused multiple orders to drop the knife. five vallejo police officers opened fire. the suspect died at the scene. richmond and vallejo police along with the contra costa district attorney's office are all investigating. live in martinez, tiffany wilson, abc7 news. >> thank you, tiffany. happening now, fire crews watching for flare-ups from ap20-acre grass fire in the berkeley hills. >> sky 7 showing that scene. you can see the flames spreading through thick vegetation yesterday afternoon. it was really close to the area devastated by the oakland fire hills more than 20 years ago. >> yesterday's fire began near grizzly peak boulevard. one firefighter was sent to the hospital. he tumbled 50 feet down a hill after he encountered a hornet's nest. that firefighter is stable. a section of grizzly peak boulevard will remain closed until 8:00 tonight. >> australia's prime minister believes a threat to down an airliner has been squashed. this follows the arrest of four men over the weekend.

officials suspected them to be involved in a plot to take todo a plane loaded with passengers. travelers have endured long lines across australia for nearly a week. >> we have new details in the recall effort against the judge in the brock turner case. he's hired a political consultant who ran president trump's campaign in arizona. he's paid rdp strategies $30,000 so far. the recall effort began after he sentenced turner to a short jail term for sexually assaulting an unconscious woman outside of a stanford frat house. he said he was following a recommendation from the santa clara county probation department. new white house chief of staff john kelly is reassuring attorney general jeff sessions his position is safe. the president publicly criticized sessions for recusing himself from the russia investigation, and according to the associated press, kelly told sessions in a phone call the president is still upset at him but does not plan to fire or force him to resign. the teenager who jumped out

of the emergency exit of a copa airlines plane is not likely to face criminal charges. that's according to the san mateo county d.a. who spoke with abc7 news. they tell us the 17-year-old bay area resident and u.s. citizen is getting mental health evaluations. he went to the hospital after sliding down the wing of the panamanian airliner and onto the tarmac at sfo on tuesday. >> a mendocino county man is facing child abuse charges after his two-year-old son was found tied to a tree branch at a homeless encampment, the 27-year-old was arrested in willits last week, but authorities are just now releasing details. the sheriff's office says wilson's son was wearing only a diaper and was tied to a tree by a rope around his wrist. the child is now in the custody of child protective services. the santa clara county sheriff's office says that an at-risk woman who has been missing haas been found. 69-year-old nu chung was found by san jose police. she's in good health and her family has been notified. for the first time, the golden gate bridge parking lots will be closed for more than

just a single holiday weekend. bridge district will close vista point in marin and the east lot in san francisco every saturday and sunday this month through labor day. it's to prevent traffic waiting for parking spaces from backing up onto the bridge. taxi and ride share dropoffs are allowed in the east lot. tour buses will be allowed in both lots. >> a farmer is asking the state to pay him $15 million for the business that he lost during the oroville dam crisis. he says water rushing down the feather river wiped out 21 acres of his walnut orchards. in february, the state cut water releases when the spillway began to crumble, but winter runoff pushed the lake level to close to overflowing. it forces 188,000 people to evacuate after engineers released millions of gallons of water. they allege the state failed to protect the property of landowners downstream of lake oroville. >> new details on that close call at sfo last month. federal investigators say the air canada plane was even closer to planes getting ready to take off than previously thought.

the ntsb released pictures to show how close it was to four passenger jets on the taxiway. officials say the air canada plane was just 59 feet from the ground. >> the fact that the united 787 that was number one on the taxiway had a tail height of pruxly 56 feet, it's alarming to take the difference between 59 and 56, but i think those aircraft were separated laterally by a significant amount. >> according to the report, the air canada flight was so off course that it hit a blind spot in the airport's radar system for 12 seconds. radar system should have alerted air traffic controllers the aircraft was not where it was supposed to be. the ntsb has not yet reached a finalclusion in its investigation. >> a bay area seafood distributor is facing a $50,000 fine for imported and selling detached ray fins through sfo. the fine volved true worlds facility in san leandro. prosecutors say the company kept records of its fin sales.

california state law prohibits the possession, sale, or distribution of detached fins from fish like sharks or rays. so far, no comment from true world. a heads-up today if you live in danville. happening, police plan to hold a drill vaufrbing an active shooter scenario. the training exercise will take place between 8:00 and noon at the rock church. and police say it will be limited to areas within the church grounds. it will not extend into the surrounding neighborhood. the training will involve simulated firearms and explosive sounds but no live ammo will be used. it can never be said enough. do not, please, do not leave pets or kids in the car, even when it's warm outside. walnut creek police tweeted this picture of an officer who saved that dog from a hot car. they said it best in the tweet. let common sense prevail. we have lost 29 kids already due to heat stroke, vehicular heat stroke, 39 last year.

continues today. now, you told me a couple days ago, you have one of those space air conditioners, if you will. how is it holding up? is it working for you? >> it's not really working. it might get one room cool, but that's about it. yeah. so i'm ready for some cooler temps this weekend. i certainly will take it. we've got a few trouble spots on the commute this morning. want to head out to the central valley. westbound 580 before grant line road, we have a crash that's been pushed off to the shoulder, but pretty stop and go as you get through the stretch, and the has spilled over to 205, so down to about 11 miles per hour. of course, part of that, our typical slowdown, but part caused by the collision as well. southbound 680, stop and go traffic through walnut creek, we have another collision off on the shoulder reported around main street. so a little heavier than average traffic there, and a quick check of drive times. westbound 80, highway 4 to the maze, 26 minutes. not terrible, we had earlier road work that is long gone at this point. stop and go traffic if you're coming down from albany and heading through the berkeley and emeryville area. once you make it through the bay

welcome back. this morning, bipartisan support is building for a bill to protect special counsel robert mueller from potentially being fired by president trump, as you know, mueller is heading up the investigation into whether or not the president's team colluded with russia during the 2016 elections. well, today, two senators will introduce a bill that would forbid the president from directing any special counsel retroactive to mueller's appointment in may so he would not be able to fire him. the senators say this measure would insure the special counsel's independence. >> thank you, jessica. >> happening now, fire crews in the berkeley hills guarding against a flare-up of a dangerous wildfire. >> they're being especially cautious because it broke out not far from the devastating oakland hills fire. lonny rivera is live with what's happening now. >> reporter: yes, we're here. good morning. we're here just above the hillside, and we have moved in

closer. you can see just how steep and dangerous this was for firefighters. right now, they're keeping an eye on hot spots below, but they tell me it's 20% contained. here's a look at the fire from yesterday afternoon. grizzly peak boulevard is where it started near there, the lawrence berkeley national lab yesterday. 20 acres have burned, and at one point, firefighters considered shutting down the power at uc berkeley was transmission lines were in the fire's path. that never happened. but the blaze did trigger closures. also, one firefighter was taken to the hospital after falling 50 feet when he encountered a hornet's nest while helping to fight the blaze. he's in stable condition. back out here live, again, you can just see how much of a close call this was. they're keeping an eye on hot spots, dousing it below. but a lot of trees nearby here that made for fuel for this fire. so they're very happy that it's 20% contained. live here in berkeley hills,

first was this guy hanging upside down for more than half an hour when the bungee ride he was on malfunctioned. there was more work for firefighters last night. two people poised to jump next ended up stuck in a steel cage that was hanging from the same ride. they were eventually lowered to safety. the guy who was stuck upside down swears he'll never ever bungee jump again. >> president trump is launching his own news segment on facebook. he's calling it real news. on sunday, the president posted the first episode on his facebook beige. his daughter-in-law shares some of his accomplishments. he says the series discredited the mainstream media and is an alternative that's reliable. >> facebook is changing its policy to feature quicker loading sites on its app. it will cliekly come up higher on your news feed. facebook says up to 40% of people leave a website just after three seconds. they cannot wait that long. the new policy will roll out
