area, and on top of all of the humidity, too. monsoon moisture is making our neck of the woods feel a lot more like the deep south tonight. >> and across the state, heavy downpours and pounding hail are washing out roads and trapping drivers. i'm i'm kristen sze in for ama daetz. >> i'm dan ashley. parts of the east bay saw the lightning tonight. check out this video in late this evening. this is concord. check out the lightning strikes lighting up the east bay sky. what a show tonight. >> yeah. here is some video we captured from our east bay hills camera a couple of hours ago. that is impressive. we editing together some of the lightning we saw. let's begin with meteorologist sandhya patel and live doppler 7. >> kristen and dan, tracking summer thunderstorms. right now on live doppler 7 sincere mostly showers. i want to take you into street level radar, but before that i want to show you the thunderstorms that roll through the inland east bay around

brentwood, discovery bay just hours ago. we had quite a bit of lightning there and numerous reports on social media about it. right now tracking some light rain. street level ray lar around fair feel, texas street as you notice airbase parkway and also seeing some light returns around san lorenzo, castro valley, across 580 into hayward. the moisture is shifting westward moving towards the san francisco from oak lan. no all is reaching the ground, but keep in mind this moisture has been comingn i from the south. this is the summer monsoon season for obviously the desert southwest and that moisture plume coming in from southern california towards the bay area has been responsible for the active weather and the flooding rains that parts of southern california had to deal with. i will let you know how long the chance of showers and thunder will remain. dan, kristen. >> thank you. >> while the lightning is impressive to watch, it is also raising some fears about fire. >> in the south bay firefighters are taking extra precautions

tonight in case lightning sparks a wildfire. >> "abc 7 news" reporter katie marzullo is live in san jose with the story. katie. >> reporter: dan, kristen, it is damp and muggy down here but not enough moisture to dampen a spark if lightning should strike dry brush, and dry lightning is not the only weather phenomenon here. people feel like fish out of water in this muggy weather. >> you can't get comfortable. it is awful, like florida. >> being a resident here in willow glen, we don't have air conditioning in the house. it was miserable. >> reporter: but that's not the worst of it. >> it is called dry lightning if you don't have a lot of precipitation around with it. >> reporter: certified consulting meteorologist dan noel says the bay area won't take the brunt of the weather but thunderstorms without rain can be a dangerous combination. >> the number of strikes we probably would get from this sort of event would be fairly minimal, but it would only take one in a particularly dry area. >> reporter: that's why cal fire is staffing the lookout tower on

the peak on mount hamilton. volunteers will provide an invaluable service. >> they give us a bird's eye view. they can give us the state of the weather. they can give us what the weather's actually doing versus watching computer models. >> reporter: cal fire does that too and firefighters will be ready to respond if lightning strikes in the mountains. on the coast is santa cruz, a different weather phenomenon had all eyes on the sky. check it out. some are calling this massive and fast moving fog bank fog nato. katie marzullo, "abc 7 news." and we're talking weather and staying on top of developing news in southern california where that monsoon moisture has really poundinged one community. check this out. flash flooding. this driver was stuck on top of his car. nowhere to go obviously. luckily he was rescued. he's fine. this all unfolded this afternoon in acton, in northern los angeles county after a sudden burst of rainfall dumped a lot of rain. reporter joey rand from our

sister station kabc picks up the story tonight. >> reporter: turni river bed into a ang street again. tonight the cleanup begins after a powerful thunderstorm sent a wall of water flooding acton and moving cars and making its way inside homes. >> it is a mess. >> reporter: hilary mulligan's house was in the middle of the water's path. >> there was nothing you could do. ut couldn't stop it. my whole entire house is flooded, the whole thing. >> i couldn't believe, it was like a monsoon rolled in, a freak storm. >> reporter: it wound up trapping several drivers in their vehicles, one captured live on eyewitness news. >> a skateboard? okay. wants the save that. >> reporter: this one of four air rescues the l.a. county fire department had to execute today. other cars had no drivers in them but likely will be staying that way for sometime, flooded by the rising waters. >> it was coming down in huge waves. so it was like amazing. i have never seen anything like

since then, we've learned three people were wounded. as "abc 7 news" reporter lisa amin gulezian tells us live from the newsroom, the search continues. >> reporter: a little more than an hour ago san francisco police told "abc 7 news" they plan to increase patrols in the park. as for the victims, all through were taken to sf general one is in critical condition, one was treated and released and the last is a teenage boy. tonight delores park is quiet. there are few signs of the violence that erupted here just hours ago. san francisco police surrounded the park after two men and a teenage boy were shot. >> i looked down to the bridge and saw a person running and a handgun in their hand. >> reporter: it happened on the pedestrian bridge off church street around 3:00. witnesses say a group wearing bandanas and hoodies started yelling and threatening people as they crossed. that's when a park regular,

nicknamed hatter, says he and some others tried to calm the disruptive group down. >> and the guy literally raised the gun to my face and i froze. i felt a fragment hit my knee and took off running. the guy behind me was hit in the head, which i just heard might be someone i know, and one to the right got hit in the back of the leg. >> reporter: a third person who may have been the group's target was also shot. >> it does appear this is not a random active event. >> reporter: regardless, the shootings worry many park users, especially parents. >> i probably wouldn't have come if i would have -- if i would have known, even though we love this park. >> when there's incidents like this, you know, it kind of, you know, shakes you to the core. >> reporter: still hours later, the park's appeal lured people back again. in san francisco, lisa amin gulezian, "abc 7 news." and we are learning more about the man shot and killed by vallejo police officers in richmond. he was 45-year-old jeffrey barboa of venetia.

vallejo police say he was wanted in connection of an armed robbery of an el ser eat owe doe net shop. a worker there says he ran out with the cash register. >> he said, do you want to die? i got a knife and gun. we looked at him in the face. he really looked really desperate. >> vallejo police say officers tried to pull barboa over last night but he wouldn't stop and led them on a high-speed chase into richmond. witness cellphone shows him advancing towards the officer as he held a machete. police say he refused numerous orders to drop the weapon. five officers opened fire. he was killed. a vacant house went up in flames tonight near oakland's san antonio park. the oakland fire department tweeted this video. it was reported about 5:00. officials say the front stairs collapsed and they had to force their way inside to fight the flames. no jurpys though in the situation. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. coming up, a high-rise

this bmw weaving in and out of traffic today. this all start on interstate 580 in the dublin pleasanton area. it ended 25 miles away in the streets of oakland. "abc 7 news" reporter cornell bernard shows us how police brought this dangerous driver to a stop. >> very crazy. >> reporter: and it was. a wild chase lasting one hour and 45 minutes. the driver of a stolen bmwx5 had police in pursuit aross the east bay. sky 7 overhead as the driver made it from pleasanton to oakland on 580. he got off the freeway, momentarily dils appearing under the overpass, but re-emerged driving over a median, making a right turn the wrong way up mcarthur boulevard near highland hospital. the pursuit picked up speed as the driver made it into piedmont. we saw many of close calls like this with oncoming cars. >> we're quite fortunate nobody was injured including the driver of the vehicle himself.

>> reporter: moments later the driver comes to a stop, confronted by a police cruiser in front of wildwood elementary but he didn't give up. he spun around heading back to oakland. the chals eye piered to be reaching an end at this quick stop market, but the driver took off again. but a chp officer did a pit maneuver, spinning the suv around. it slammed into a parked car. >> big bam, like big noise. we saw like the car kind of spin around right there, and then, yeah, that's what i saw in the window. >> reporter: 30-year-old james simms of antioch sur rundedded to police. chp admits they weren't sure how to stop him or where to wait. >> it was luck. he was all over the different streets. we happened to be at the right place at the right time. >> reporter: simms is charged with car theft, evading police and driving with an expired license. in oakland, cornell bernard, "abc 7 news." san jose unified school district has begun designating gender neutral bathrooms or all-inclusive restrooms as it is calling them at all cam pulses

and offices. "abc 7 news" was at lincoln high school which was the first to open these new restrooms last year after an lgbtq student group lobbied for them to the administrators, all-inclusive is defined as open to all gender identities. >> we are about elevating opportunities for all students no matter what your background, how you identify yourself. so we're really proud and we're really proud of the fact originally it was a student-driven process. >> each campus will have at least one all-inclusive single occupancy student bathroom in or near the health office by the end of the year. >> mother nature is putting on that lightning show tonight, right? >> we don't see it too often around here, but boy we did tonight. meteorologist sandhya patel is tracking for us. >> yeah, dan and kristen, intense stuff. in the last 24 years i've been doing weather i have seen it only a few times in the summer so you're right. here is a look at live doppler 7. what happened was monsoon moisture came in from the south,

resulting in the humidity you are feeling and also some showers. right now we are tracking showers on street level. daly city, across 280. we've seen some showers in the hayward, san lee and row, castro valley area and still seeing it around marina boulevard. as we take a look at this look back, our radar, there were numerous reports of intense lightning around brentwood, discovery bay, just a few hours ago. it was accompanied by rain, but not all of it was reaching the ground. i do want to show you a picture that was sent to me by one of our -- one of my follow orers o twitter. this was intense lightning report from the brentwood area. incredible stuff. obviously the concern is there for fire danger, especially with the lightning threat remaining in the forecast as we held into friday. any dry lightning could potentially cause some problems. right now a live look from our east bay hills camera, and it is a shaky view there a little bit. we are seeing pretty good

visibility across the region here. if i were you, i would download the accuweather app and follow live doppler 7 because it is changing. temperature also right now in the 70s and 80s inland, 60s coast side. it is so warm outside right now when you take a look at the dew points it is uncomfortable. temperatures really warm, but then you have dew points in the low 60s. oakland, san francisco, san jose, and that's humid as you take a look at this chart here between 60 and 69 for the bay area. definitely blame it on the monsoon flow feeling sticky out there. from our "abc 7 news" exploratorium camera a beautiful view looking towards san francisco. it will be muggy tomorrow and fire danger remains elevated. the cooling trend will continue. i want to show you the hour-by-hour forecast. not all of the moisture will reach the ground, but while you are sleeping that monsoon flow is going to continue. so definitely potential for some

more showers into the morning commute, and potential is there for an isolated thunderstorm or two. but the threat will diminish as we head towards the afternoon hours. you will notice it is going to be primarily in the north bay. tomorrow morning when you get going, short sleeve weather will do it. it is going to be humid and warp out there. temperatures in the upper 50s all the way to the low 70est inland. not something we're used to. some people on social media are saying it feels like you're back east, feels like you're in cancun. yes, it is definitely unusually humid for us. mid 60s tomorrow afternoon to the mid 90s inland for friday. the cooling that started today will carry over into friday. as you check out the accuweather seven day forecast contines into the weekend as well. we are keeping a slight chance to a chance of friday shower or thunder. not so muggy on saturday. i think you will be relieved to hear dryer air moving in. temperatures will be back to average and the humidity will be
