here are some of the top stories we're following on "world news now." michelle carter has been sentenced to 15 months in jail for her boyfriend's suicide. she sent dozens of texts urging the young man to take his life. now we're hearing from his family. more details ahead. the investigation into russian meddling is apparently expanding. robert mueller has convened a grand jury in washington, d.c. and president trump is blasting the probe as a total fabrication. a massive fire at one of the world's tallest residential building is now under control. flames ripped through an 86-story skyscraper in dubai. no injuries reported and no word yet on what caused the fire. and you may want to pick up some lottery tickets on your way to or from work today. this weekend's big jackpots have already surpassed $500,000. tomorrow's powerball is up to

raised new questions about the power of the text, a judge sentencing 20 year old michelle carter to 15 months in jail. >> she's a bright young lady, did well in school, and i am satisfied that she was mindful of the actions. >> reporter: but carter, found guilty of encouraging boyfriend conrad roy to kill himself through text messages and phone calls remains free on bail during the appeal process. the roy family in anguish. >> there was no closure for us today. we've been dragging this through so long and it's going to keep going. >> reporter: in 2014, carter, then 17, exchanged thousands of text messages with 18-year-old roy leading up to his suicide. just before taking his life, he wavered, texting, i'm freaking out again, i'm overthinking. she replied, i thought you wanted to do this. the time is right and you're ready. you just need to do it. hours later, roy dead of carbon monoxide poisoning in his own truck.

before sentencing, his father and sister speaking of their loss. >> i'll never be an aunt to his children or get to see him getting married. it's something i never thought i would have to live with. >> she has not shown any remorse. how could michelle carter behave so viciously and encourage my son to end his life. >> reporter: but the defense argued that both teens struggled with depression and that carter was overwhelmed with her own mental illness. >> miss carter will have to live with the consequences of this for the rest of her life. >> reporter: calling the case a tragedy for both families, the judge giving a clear order to the woman who sent those tragic texts. >> part of the motivation of this activity that led to your conviction was a sense of self-aggrandizement. this court now orders that you are not to profit from the events of which you now stand convicted. >> reporter: the sentencing was a bit of a victory for michelle carter. she remains at home with her family, and her lawyer says she may stay there for weeks if not

"the wall street journal" reports that special counsel robert mueller has been using an empaneled grand jury for weeks, they're used to compel people and institutions to hand over documents. the president's personal lawyer on fox insisting there is still no indication that the president himself is a target. >> with respect to the empaneling of the grand jury, we have no reason to believe the president's under investigation here. >> reporter: the white house has denounced the investigation as a witch-hunt but says they are quote, fully committed to cooperating with the special counsel.

brad melke, abc news, new york. and russia is in the news this morning for another reason. a cease-fire for another safe zone in syria. it's the third of four-planned truces in recent months under an agreement also brokered by turkey and iran. it is expected to clear the way for much-needed humanitarian relief to rebel-held areas. russia's depng military yilo police to that area today. two u.s. soldiers killed in afghanistan have now been identified. you see their photos there. sergeant jonathan hunter, a resident of columbus, indiana and specialist christopher harris of jackson springs, north carolina died after their convoy was attacked by a suicide bomber in kandahar. the two men were paratroopers and on their first deployment. four other soldiers were wounded in that attack. here at home, rangers in grand canyon national park believe they found the body of a woman who disappeared during a hike with her children.

38-year-old dr. sarah beetle disappeared on tuesday. her children ages 10 and 11 are safe. she had left them in a secure area to find water after one of the kids started feeling dizzy from heat exhaustion. she is described as an experienced backpacker and hiker. the national park service is conducting an investigation. we're learning new details about that chemical spill in north carolina that sent dozens of kids to the hospital. authorities say all those kids are doing much better. they were getting a swimming lesson at the ymca when they were overcome by fumes from the leaking chemicals. a problem with the fuel pump caused chemicals to mix in a way that wasn't intended. >> they said i needed to meet them at the emergency room. >> came out choking, coughing, spitting up. then they told everybody to get out of the pool. >> i can just imagine. that pool remains closed as it undergoes repairs. witnesses say they could smell the fumes from the street. every year pool chemical injuries send 5,000 americans, mostly kids, to the er. and this year's kennedy center honors could get a little awkward. the center says president trump

and the first lady will both attend the gala and host the pre-gala reception at the white house in december. but this year many of the honorees are vocal critics of the president, including gloria estefan, ll cool j and norman leer. leer has already announced he's boycotting the reception. the honors will be held december 3rd. so the nfl kicked off its preseason last night with the hall of fame game pitting the cardinals against the cowboys. no stars and a few starters for canton, ohio. now first quarter, the cardinals struck first with this touchdown. and for all you stat freaks, that was the first td game since -- bruce butler and full extension to grab the kellen

fire at one of the world's tallest residential buildings under control. the early-morning flames in dubai sent residents of dubai sent residents of the 86-story torch tower as it's called, scrambling for safety. now plumes of smoke could be seen billowing into the air as burning debris fell to the ground. a resident told abc news that the fire started on the 65th floor and spread down. authorities say everyone was evacuated and no injuries reported. no word yet on how the fire started. this, by the way, is the second fire to hit that same skyscraper in two years. a massachusetts judge has sentenced a young woman to 15 months in jail after she sent text messages and calls encouraging her teenage boyfriend to commit suicide. michelle carter's attorneys argued that the then 17-year-old was struggling with depression when she exchanged thousands of texts with conrad roy, urging him to follow through on his talk of taking his own life.

prosecutors say they were unable to get the luggage through check-in because it was too heavy. this morning the suspects were denied bail during a court appearance via a video link. the men arrested with two other people in raids in sydney over the weekend. and back here at home, a powerful thunderstorm triggered flash flooding in one southern california community. the storm about 50 miles north of l.a. at one point dumped three inches of rain per hour. one driver rescued by helicopter from the roof of his pickup truck. tv viewers in the southern california area watched it happen live. the flooding also damaged metro link train tracks and that will affect this morning's commute. quite a dramatic scene there. and further north, firefighters are holding their own in the 56,000 acre cinder butte fire in oregon between bend and burns. that fire is still uncontained and it comes as the pacific northwest is set to get a bit of relief from that heat.
