rnet with speeds of 250 megabits per second across our entire network, to more companies, in more locations, than centurylink. we do business where you do business. ♪ ♪ at the live desk right now, firefighters still mopping up after a big fire destroyed more than a dozen cars in the south bay overnight. abc7 news reporter matt keller has been gathering details on what happened. he's live in campbell now. hi, matt. >> reporter: jessica, since i last saw you, we moved to the back yard of a home on april way, and you can see the damage that was done by the flames overnight. their fence is destroyed, and right behind that, you can see the real damage. 16 vehicles were destroyed by fire overnight. this happened at about 3:00 this morning when firefighters were called. it was big.

the flames were huge. and just over this carport, something that was very lucky for the people who live in the apartment over there. they actually have a pool right there, which makes a great fire break for firefighters. so that's the good news. that apartment complex was not threatened by the flames, but the homes on april way were. their fence was destroyed, but the good news, firefighters were able to keep it from spreading to other structures. 16 vehicles were destroyed. now, firefighters have a big job to do this morning. >> right now, they're going to go under all the hoods of the cars and make sure there's no hidden fire burning in the plastics or part of the fuel components. they'll use saws and tools to access and make sure the cars are completely extinguished. >> what a mess it's going to be a tough morning for a lot of people who just lost their mode of transportation overnight. i talked with the fire investigator who is here on the scene. he told me he has another investigator arriving here at 6:00.

he believes he knows where the fire started but he's not sure what started this fire. that will be part of their investigation this morning. eastbound lanes of hamilton avenue right near ebay at april way are blocked off because of all the fire trucks in the middle of the road. they have hoses out so you want to avoid that area if at all possible. they're expected to be out here for another two hours. so expect those delays to be there as well. matt keller, abc7 news. >> thanks for the update. quite dramatic. >> good morning to all of you. fry, august 4th. the other big story is the weather. >> mike nicco tracking those conditions and the possibility of thunderstorms today. hey, mike. >> yeah, check this out. this was last night in concord. mother nature putting on a light show. one of those thunderstorms rolled through conta costa. it left about .06 inches of rain in brentwood and a record setting .07 inches of rain in livermore. thankfully, no reports of damage. no fires started by this lightning. a lot of that was cloud to

cloud. it's cloud to ground that we really need to be concerned with. but quite a show nonetheless. here's a look at what's going on right now with live doppler 7. over stockton, and just to the north of lakeport, we have a few thunderstorms still rumbling. these are going to continue rumbling to the east, or i should say the west-northwest. there's a possibility we could see more light shows this morning, especially in the east bay valleys. here's a look at what's going on as far as our roof camera, and thanks to alexis for showing me this. you can see a little bit of a sheen developing right here along the embarcadero. i was using a different camera, so some of that rain is making it down to the ground. our best chance of storms through morning hours and by noon, the storm threat will wane. 66 at the coast, 82 around the bay, 92 inland. kind of warm and muggy for us. >> good morning, mike. i do have live doppler 7 on top of our traffic map. as you explained earlier, not all of this making it down to the ground, so it may look a little heavier than what you're actually seeing, but a good chance you're going to have to

flip the wipers on. it's been a while since you had oo do that. i want to take you to oakland. between 29th and 23rd, a full closure overnight. they're still working on demolishing the 23rd overcrossing. wrapped that up early. all lanes open and no residual delays. looking just fine for aunjzs at this early hour, and a quick check outside. san jose, 101 and 880, extremely light volumes. friday light all the way around. >> thanks. people still have or police still have not found whoever was behind a shooting at dolores park. three people are hurt, including a teen. >> now you can expect to see increased police presence over this warm weekend. tiffany wilson live at san francisco police headquarters. tiffa tiffany. >> reporter: that's right, reggie. san francisco police say that they will increase the police presence at dolores park this weekend following yesterday's triple shooting. the gunman or gunmen are still at large at this point.

now, they opened fire on the pedestrian bridge off church street around 3:00 yesterday. the park was packed with children, families, and tourists at the time. the victims were taken to sf general for treatment. one man is in critical condition, one was treated and released, and a third was a teenage boy. witnesses say the confrontation started when a group wearing bandannas and hoodies started yelling and threatening people as they crossed the bridge. police say the shooting does not appear to be random. the violence has parkgoers, especially parents, concerned. >> i hope that more patrol or something is done. i think, you know, in parts of the city where we know that there's a little bit more crime, they should be keeping a more watchful eye. >> reporter: and police absolutely will be keeping a closer eye on dolores park. they, again, anoujsed two extra patrols will be on duty at

dolores park from early morning until after dark all this weekend. live in san francisco, tiffany wilson, abc7 news. >> thank you. developing news in the east bay. we're learning more about the man shot and killed by vallejo police officers in richmond. he w45-year-old jeffrey barboa. he was wanted in connection to a robbery at a doughnut two weeks ago. a worker said he ran out with a cash register. >> he said do you want to die? i have a knife and a gun. we look at him in the face. he looked really desperate. >> vallejo police say officers tried to pull him over on wednesday night but he wouldn't stop and led them on a high-speed chase into richmond. witness cell phone video shows him advancing toward officers as he held a machete. police say he refused numerous officers to drop it. five officers eventually opened fire, killing him. >> the man accused of murdering kate steinle on san francisco's pier 14 will be headed to court. the judge in the case is

expected to possibly set a date for jury selection. he has pleaded not guilty to second degree murder charges. steinle was walking along the pier with her dad when she was shottic 2015. lopez sanchez told abc7 news two years ago, the gun went off accidentally after he found it under a bench. he had been deported five times before the shooting. >> san jose unified school districts beginning to designate all inclusive restrooms at all campuses and offices. this happened after an lgbtq student group lobbied administrators. all inclusive is defined as open to all gender opportunities. >> we're about opportunities for all students, no natter what your background, how you identify yourself, so we're really proud and proud of the fact that originally this was a student-driven process. each campus will have at least one all inclusive single occupancy bathroom in or near the health office by the end of

the year. >> some bay area construction crews are escaping the heat by working at night. a team of construction workers in walnut creek worked overnight on the brick laying project there. this was taken around 2:00 this morning when temperatures were 80 degrees there. this is on main street near mt. diablo boulevard. the supervisor says you learn to adapt. >> during the day, we have been hitting high 90s, 100 degrees. working with brick, it has a tendency to heat up the temperature a little more. what we do is come here during the night when the weather is cooler. >> he says it's also safer at night with less people and traffic around. let's get an update on the two thunderstorms i'm watching. the one north of wilber springs seems to be staying well to the north of us and will keep moving that way. clear lake and lakeport, you may be able to see the lightning and hear the thunder at times over the next couple hours. let's put it into motion. you can see it's making that west almost southwesterly jog,

so the upper lake, that may be a place where we could see a few bolts of lightning over the next couple hours. now, the one near lodi, you can see the lightning picked up a little bit since we last talked if you were with us about a half hour ago. this, right underneath my name there, you'll find is antioch and places like brentwood and discovery bay. it's kind of heading that way. so another round possible for you guys. maybe. you went to bed with a round, maybe waking up with a round. the thing you really get in the east bay, look at that, 84 in antioch. it's still 80 in pittsburg. everybody else in the upper 70s until you get to concord at 74 because of the rain cooled air you had. we're in the low to mid 70s from hayward, san carlos, down into the south bay, and mid to upper 60s all the way into the north bay, pacifica one of the cool spots at 62. quick look at your activity planner. maybe a little bit of moisture on the richmond-san rafael bridge. mild temperatures alt the bay.

something up there. >> crazy images out of acton. >> that is crazy. we were talking about how fast that flooding can happen, mike. >> yeah, amazing. and it can happen really fast in a local level, but did you notice how sunny it was when the flooding was happening? excuse me. if it happens up in the mountains. it could take several hours for the flooding to get out of the mountains and down to the lower elevations. even once the rain is over, you have to be prepared and be aware and have app. ours, if you need it on your phone. it's a great thing to have when something like that happens. here's a look at what's going on from mt. tamalpais. looks pretty quiet. air is super dry from about 7,000 feet downward. that's why these thunderstorms look really impressive on the radar, but not so much reaching the ground. early storms -- excuse me -- warm and humid today. tonight, mostly cloudy, mild to warm, one more night, and the storms will start moving to the north and east away from us after today. here's a look at live doppler.

doing some attenuator repair, we have barriers in the area that maybe got knocked over to the side. not sure how this happened, but southbound 87 off ramp to 280, fully closed right now. according to caltrans. it's probably going to be that way until 6:30 this morning. right now, no traffic impact, but i'll keep an eye on that. we'll take a look at some pretty friday light drive times in less than ten. >> thank you. >> following breaks news in campbell where early morning flames destroyed 16 vehicles. >> the fire is going to make it tough for people to get to work for hundreds of tech workers. matt keller is live with some incredible new video. hey, matt. >> reporter: natasha, what a melted mess here in campbell. check it out. you can see these cars are almost unrecognizable to what type of vehicle they are. the model and the make of these cars. they are melted. and firefighters had to open up a lot of these engines and these hoods to get in there to make sure that the fire is out. they just finished up their

overhaul, it seems, in the last 20 minutes or so. they're certainly that the flames are out, although i still see a little smoldering in some of the vehicles and in the carport here this morning. take a look at this cell phone video. this is what it looked like around 3:00 this morning. very intense flames. they destroyed a fence separating the parking lot with homes on april way. residents were spraying the flames with their garden hoses. firefighters were able to keep it prom spreading to any of these structures around here. the intense heat and unusual high temperatures and humidity in the south bay made it especially challenging for firefighters. >> high temperatures obviously affect our ability to cool and working in heavy bunker gear. even at a lower temperature, a higher humidity is equivalent to a hotter day's work. >> reporter: the next step is figuring out what started this fire. one investigator is out here. another one is on the way. they will determine if this was started intentionally or not. eastbound lanes on hamilton

fire in oakland are due back in court to be arraigned. ghost ship operator derick almena is also schedule today have a bail hearing. max harris had his bail reduced to $750,000. both men face 36 counts of involuntary manslaughter. >> the fire that broke out in the hills above uc berkeley may have been arson, according to campus police. crews are still trying to contain hot spots that keep flaring up. they managed to keep the flames to 20 acres. here's a look from drone view 7. the fire started wednesday afternoon on grizzly peak near the scene of an earlier vehicle collision. police are trying to figure out if an armed man who left the accident scene and came back later had something to do with this fire. the federal government now faces a wrongful death lawsuit from the parents of a muralist murdered with an ice agent stolen gun. antonio ramos died after being shot while volunteering on a

mural in oakland nearly two years ago. a suspected gang member is charged with ramos' murder. the murder weapon was stolen from a car rented by i.c.e. in san francisco two weeks before that deadly 2015 shooting. federal officials have not commented on that suit. >> coun cord police need your help in identifying a man who tried to kidnap a teenage girl. investigators released this sketch of the suspect and they say he approached the 16-year-old on july 6th near ellis. as he spoke to her, he grabbed her arms and tried to pull her towards his car. she fought back, kicking and punching him. finally forcing him to let go. he is described as hispanic, between 35 and 40 years old, weighing about 160 pounds. he was wearing glasses. he drove away in a four-door beige or gold american made sedan. >> a series of furlough friday begins for local courthouses in san francisco. today marks the first of 11 fridays when san francisco courts will provide fewer services and force many employees to tax unpaid days

marshall mckalian of foster city. we have learned he was a well known dentist giving free orthodonting care to residents of san mateo county. according to his own website, he had a passion for flying, often volunteered his time for flying for volunteer organizations. that pilot's small plane crashed yesterday, landed in the backyard in the chicken coop of a backyard there, and it also hit some power lines. witnesses say it looked like he was trying to make some sort of emergency landing when the plane crashed. the ntsb is investigating right now. mckalian leaves behind a wife and three kids. that's the very latest information coming in. back to you. >> jessica, thank you. if your commute includes caltrain, get ready to pay more. caltrain fares and parking fees are going up. the board of directors has approved a proposal to raise the adult fare by 25 cents.

jose, doesn't it? talking about rain everywhere but you guys. here's a look at what's going on. 280 and 17, pretty cloudy. storm chances fade, warm and humid. another mild to warm night ahead and cooler breezes and dry air starting this weekend. 87 in san jose. mid 90s, los gatos and morgan hill. then we drop to the low 80s in the peninsula to even mid to upper 70s around millbrae, san mateo. mid to upper 60 along the coast. mid 70s around downtown, south san francisco and sausalito. cloud cover will keep you in the low to mid 80s in the north bay valleys. 84 in fremont, and yesterday, we were in the low to mid 90s. didn't really feel like it inland because you didn't have the strong sunshine. i think today is about a repeat of that. temperatures tonight in the 60s and 70s in most areas again. i think san francisco and the coast will drop down into the 50s. you notice temperatures going to get back to average by sunday and kind of hang out there. we'll get back to summer here coming up pretty shortly. you ran into a little rain.

a company that makes cannabis products is buying an entire california town. american green is paying $5 million for the town of nipton. this is basically a ghost town. only about 60 people live there. it's located near the california/nevada border. it's about an hour away from vegas. the company is planning to turn it into a pot friendly destination after marijuana becomes legal for recreational use on january 1st. the goul is to turn it into a tourist spot by using existing structures and building others all powered by renewable energy. >> the holiday season months away, but there's good news for shoppers this morning.

fedex announced it will not add surcharges for packages shipped during the busy holiday season this year. the move comes two months after its rival u.p.s. announced it would have new surcharges to affect shipments near black friday and the holidays. fedex claims it will only tack on additional charges for packages that are oversized or need extra care. >> a common complaint among amazon shoppers is about returns. the policy returns depending on whether amazon itself is shipping or if it's a third party seller. all of that is about to change in october. michael finney told us last night independent sellers will soon be required to use the same return policy. and that means in most cases you will not have to contact the seller and have that lengthy back and forth before sending something back. you can use amazon's prepaid shipping labels and the seller must issue a refund within two days of receiving the return. amazon said it will allow sellers to exempt a few products from the new rules. it has not said exactly what those will be. >> while we're on the subject of
