a fire rages through the carport of a south bay apartment complex destroying more than a dozen cars and forcing neighbors to grab their garden hoses to help protect their property. thanks for joining us. i'm kristein sze. investigators now say this early morning fire in campbell was likely an accident. abc 7 news reporter matt keller is live at the scene at april way and hamilton avenue. matt? >> kristen, one firefighter told me that this is the most cars he's seen destroyed in one fire in his entire long career. you can see this is a mess that still needs to be cleaned up, but the good news, no one was

hurt. the flames were huge around 3:00 this morning as they destroyed this carport in an apartment complex in campbell of a hamilton avenue across from the ebay campus. residents in the area had to quickly decide whether to stay or go. >> nothing like having to evacuate your kids at 3:00 a.m. >> so you moved them over there. >> just to keep them safe because we didn't know how big and how long it was going to go on. a few moments it was pretty big an intense and scarey. >> steve chapman shot this video from his cell phone and his back fence was destroyed. >> the whole carport went up pretty quick. >> reporter: by the time the firefighters put out the flame 16 vehicles were destroyed. campbell police evacuated some apartments just in case the firefighters were able to keep the flames away. daylight gave a better view of the melted mess and residents were in disbelief. >> wow, i can't explain. i mean, it's just unbelievable how something could happen so fast so quickly. >> reporter: others trying to find a silver lining. >> i was just thinking about a

paint job on it because of the top. i guess i don't have to worry anymore. >> reporter: investigators determined the cause. they say leftover hot coals or ashes from this red barbecue sparked the flames lighting the carport on fire eventually spreading from car to car. this is stephanie's vehicle or what's left of it. >> a scion. >> reporter: she has insurance but until her car can be replaced. >> uber, something, neighbors. >> reporter: an investigator told me the person responsible for this barbecue will likely not get a seetation or face any charges. he says it doesn't appear there was any criminal negligence involved in this case. reporting live in campbell, matt keller, abc 7 news. matt, thank you. abc 7 news first alerted you to this fire as we arrived at the scene this morning you can get bay area breaking news any time with the abc 7 news app. just enable push alerts. new details now on the fire

that broke out in the hills above uc berkeley. investigators are looking into whether it was arson. drove view 7 shows us some of the scorched land. crews are still trying to contain hot spots that keep flaring up. the fire starting wednesday afternoon on grizzly peek near the scene of an earlier car crash. police are trying to find out if an armed man who came back later had something to do with the fire. the bay area faces increased dangers for wildfires. one tiny spark can trigger a huge fire and that's when cal fire has people looking out for rising smoke atop a lookout tower on mt. hamilton. >> they give us a bird's eye view, the state of the weather, what the weather is actually doing versus watching computer models. >> reporter: cal fire tracks the weather with computers and monitors video feed to look for smoke. bay area fire fighters are also

ready to go on a moment's notice. some bay area construction crews are escaping this week's hot weather by working overnight. this is video of a crew in walnut creek working around 2:00 this morning on a brick-laying project. temperatures were still almost 80 degrees. project manager says it's actually safer for the team to work overnight because there are fewer people and there's less traffic. right now we want to bring in meteorologist mike nicco for a look at wild video for this interesting weather we're having. mike? >> definitely is out of the ordinary, isn't it, kristen. mother nature putting on a show last night. this video was taken in concord of a thunderstorm that was actually over fairfield. can you see several lightning strikes. the good news, most of the lightning strikes were cloud-to-cloud and not cloud-to-ground and that's why there were no reports of any damage. yeah, i wish i could sit here and watch this a couple more times. absolutely gorgeous to me. what's going on right now. you can see i've dialed back live doppler 7 to 10:40 last

night. put into motion, that fell apart and we had more thunderstorms develop this morning in the central valley as they pushed westward into our neighbors. they fell apart but left us with some rain. .07, a daily record in livermore. you can see the coverage and the intensity. just mainly the greens. definitely waning. still have a chance of sprinkles the next couple of hours, and as we head through the evening hours you can see the 12-hour day planner shows a little bit of sunshine and temperatures still on the warm and muggy side. kristen. >> all right. mike, thanks so much. all right. new this morning, caltrain is moving again after a train ran into a truck in you can see it was a mess. caltrain tells us the truck was hit at a crossing gate on broadway just before 9:00. trains began single tracking. passengers experienced about a 20-minute delay. no word on why the accident happened. we're tracking developing

news out of san francisco's delores park where a shooting left three people hurt. now, police tell abc 7 news they are increasing patrols in the park. the extra presence will hopefully restore a sense of security after yesterday's triple shooting. it happened on the pedestrian bridge off church street around 3:00. witnesses say a group wearing bandanas and hoodies started yelling and threatening people as they crossed. >> just a moment of glimting up and seeing one person raising the gun to my face. that's when six or seven rounds shot off and i took off running. >> police are still looking for those responsible. they don't believe the shooting was random. as for the victims, they were all taken to sf general. one man is in critical condition, the other was treated and released and the third is a teenage boy. no word on his condition. new details on a deadly plane crash yesterday in sacramento. we learned the pilot was a respected philanthropic dentist

from the bay area. jessica castro from abc 7 morning's is here with the latest. jessica? >> reporter: yes, kristen. we know he was 71 marshall michaelian from foster city. according to his web page the pcommunity providing free root e canals, volunteering at church and even using his love of flying to volunteer for charities. officials say 71-year-old dr. marrial michaelian died when his small plane crashed in rio linda thursday afternoon. the plane landed in the backyard of a home in a chicken coop after flying into power lines and several trees. >> it just kind of hit them and flung the plane around, you know what i mean, just -- and pieces were falling off. >> reporter: witnesses say it looked leak he was trying to make an emergency landing. >> if it hadn't been for the telephone lines i think he would have made it. >> the plane was an experimental 4p built on a kit. it took the enthusiast 12 years

to build, and there's a picture of him proudly standing next to it. mikalian often flew as part of his volunteer work with organizations like angel flight that provides free medical flights across the country. he and his son owned four clinics in the bay area and also regular larly volunteered his time providing root canals and other services in san mateo. he leaves behind a wife and three kids. te ntsb is still investigating the cause of the crash. jessica cass tra, aches 7 news. >> jessica, thank you. new developments in the russia investigation. abc news has learned special counsel robert mueller is now working with a grand jury. it's joining the inquiry into possible collusion between the president, his team and russia during the election.

reuters reports the panel has issued subpoenas over that trump tower meeting where donald trump jr. was promised dirt on hillary clinton. the president calls the whole thing a total fabrication. the president's personal lawyer says there's no indication the president himself is a target. the trump administration is cracking down on leaks of classified information. this morning the department of justice announced it would take new action after another controversial leak. this week "the washington post" published transcripts of private and contentious conversations between president trump and other foreign leaders. >> this nation must end this culture of leaks. we will not allow rogue anonymous sources with security clearances to sell out our country. >> it's not just this white house that's condemning the leaks. even a senior obama administration official calls the leaked transcripts absurd. all this comes after president trump blasted attorney general jeff sessions last week for

tonight is drawing crowds right now in san francisco's chinatown. hundreds of people have been standing in line all night for a chance to buy exclusive kendrick lamar merchandise. abc 7 news reporter tiffany wilson is live at the store that popped up just minutes ago. >> reporter: hi there, kristen. take a look at the huge line behind me. it stretches completely down the block. the doors just opened within the past couple of minutes and the first ten people were able to go inside and put in their orders for two different hats and several different types of t-shirts. this typically quiet chinatown alley looked like a campground overnight. the line for kendrick lamar's se block. >> just out here supporting real hip-hop. >> reporter: this teacher arrived at 8:30 last night to score the first spot in the line. >> i see kendrick lamar working in the community all the time, giving back of color, low income. >> reporter: many fans we spoke

next couple of hours, places like hercules right now, san pablo, up and down the peninsula. fremont, milipitas, san jose, you're about to get a little wet also. put it forward, and can you see definite shrinking of the aerial coverage to almost nothing by 5:15 and notice the yellows and orange which would be moderate dropping down to green before they completely dissipate. that's why we won't see any thunderstorms. just a few sprinkles and maybe a light shower. what i'm also watching is look at the marine layer. trying to sneak back into the golden gate when no one is looking. that's when you know the humidity is going to be chased away by the cooler and dryer sea breeze. that will start tomorrow. until then showers will fade and warm and humid today. tonight, mostly cloudy, our last mild to warm night and then with the storms moving north and east they will take all that warm and humid weather with. it look at the dew points. 50 to 59. well within that range. even the low 50s. we're about 58 to 656 so can you

see we're getting into the humid level where you start to feel it, and we're a little more sensitive to it here in the bay area because we don't ever get any humidiy and that's when you notice when you step out. temperature 66 in san francisco and oakland 79 and the rest of us in the 72s and 80s and on our way to the upper 60s along the coast and mid-70s and low 80s for the bay. low to mid-90s in the east bay and low to mid-80s up in the north bay. thankfully we do have the cloud cover out there, or it would feel a whole lot worse if we had the sunshine. down in the sunshine, we've got the santa clara county fair continuing. 81 and could get up to 90 if the sun breaks through the clouds. a comfy 76 at 10:00. santa rosa, the sonoma county fair. 79 and clouds more stubborn. 83 at 3:00. 16 at 7:00 with a little bit of sunshine before that sun sets at 8:17 and by 11:00 a cool 56 degrees. diamondbacks are in town to take on the giants.
