weather today, even the threat of fire. good evening. i'm ama daetz. >> and i'm dna dan ashley. >> cornell bernard is live tonight with more on this unusual summer friday. cornell? >> reporter: yeah, get this, it was raining a few minutes ago. now the sun is hot. the big story today is the humidity, the air is thick and firefighters here concerned about more lightning tonight. a rain shower in august. who knew? this person was ready, but preparing for all this humidity, not so easy. in san francisco, chestnut street is getting a new sidewalk, but this crew says the weather is not helping. >> the concrete don't try as fast. >> reporter: it's humid, sticky, slowing the job. >> mugginess and heat is always our enemy. but when there's no sun that

helps and no wind. >> reporter: people of san francisco know cold and foggy during the summer, not warm and humid. >> especially the haste flast f, people are going crazy. >> reporter: tammy says it's been a bad hair week. she manages a salon. >> it absorbs the moisture and you can see it expanding. >> reporter: she's helping nicole with her hair drama. >> it gets big and frizzes up. >> reporter: blame it on monsoonal moisture. >> what we usually see happen in arizona, utah, mexico, has shifted westward. >> reporter: it brought this lightning show to the east bay thursday night. threats of more lightning has firefighters in the north bay on the alert. >> they keep an eye out for any stoke and they're aware of any

weather. >> reporter: weather wise, we may be out of our comfort zone, but tell that to these tourists from cleveland. do you think it's humid here? >> not in terms of cleveland. >> not for august. >> it's not too bad. >> reporter: locals might disagree. cornell bernard, "abc7 news." >> time to check in with spencer christian, who has more on this unusual bay area humidity and some rare summer rain. >> well, just as mike pointed out there in cornell's report, it's the monsoonal moisture. here's a look at that. in is our looping doppler radar image, showing that flow of moisture from the desert southwest from arizona into central and northern california. and that's why we've had this humidity in the air and this outbreak of thunderstorms in the sierra fed by the moisture. right now, we're looking at a live image, showing just little traces of moisture moving over the bay area, producing isolated

showers here and there. the showers won't amount to much. overnight, you can see the air mass will get dryer and dryer, going into the midday hours tomorrow. much dryer by halate afternoon, and we'll settle down into a range of weather more typical. the forecast is coming up. tonight near phoenix, arizona, creek levels have returned to normal after flash flooding. that monsoonal system, a wall of muck ripped through a temporary camp site this afternoon, but was mostly contained by runoff canals. no one was hurt. the flash flood waters in antelope valley have subsided but mud and damage remain. thunderstorms nearly washed away this small community. coming up, the latest on the affected area, including how local officials plan to help those in need. the washington state woman arrested as part of a child sex

abuse case is back in jail tonight. authorities just confirmed to "abc7 news" that 50-year-old gale verneworth is in federal custody. she was released because charges had not yet been filed. she received text messages from 56-year-old michael keller. he was arrested monday in san jose after getting off a southwest airlines flight. police say a fellow passenger saw the disturbing messages and told the flight crew and they took action. in santa clara, the mother of a young man who was shot and killed by police after she called them for help has filed a lawsuit. she spoke to "abc7 news" chris nguyen about her pain and why she's fighting back. >> reporter: for this heart broken mother, the past five months have been nothing but hell. >> i feel my life is over now. my son was taken from me.

>> reporter: on march 9, her life changed. amanda summers called police for help multiple times that day after her son barricaded himself inside his bedroom. >> he was a nice kid. he had a good record. he was a good guy. >> reporter: he was shot and killed by police that afternoon after they say he threatened them with a gun. attempts to tase him were unsuccessful. the 24-year-old had fled out of a bedroom window but was found by police next to the train tracks. this attorney is representing the family and today filed a federal lawsuit against the city on their behalf. >> the police were aware he had a psychiatric issue, he was unarmed and essentially naked. there's no justification for that. so we're trying to get answers. >> reporter: they have worked

closely with those that have been impacted by officer involved shootings. >> these are families that have been brought together by tragedy, and are really just trying to have some public conversation about police violence. >> reporter: the santa clara police department says while it cannot comment, the officer who shot him is back from administrative leave. chris nguyen, "abc7 news." tonight, an alcatraz ferry captain and crew are being called heroes after rescuing ten people from a small vessel last night. melanie woodrow is live with this story. >> reporter: conditions out here were damp earlier today. but the captain says they were perfect for this rescue last night. the alcatraz clipper was also in the right place at the right time.

the thunderstorm activity is over, but there has been a lot of thunderstorm activity to our east. and we'll get a little bit of a drying pattern going into tomorrow. right now, muggy outside by bay area standards. this is the view at the golden gate bridge and these are the forecast features. isolated showers overnight. muggy pattern continues into tomorrow morning. dryer air for the rest of the weekend, beginning midday tomorrow. here's the forecast animation. notice the flow of high clouds and moisture continuing into the morning hours. you can see on the image here that it starts to dry out and the air gets drier and drier, more like our typical summertime air here in the bay area. by late afternoon, early evening tomorrow. on we go to low temperatures today. it will be mild once again with lows in the mid to upper 60s, here t near the coast lows in the low 60s. mostly sunny skies, 88 degrees here. 83 at san jose. on the peninsula, highs of 80 at

tonight, some bay area high school students are working hard to become the next leaders in the medical field. kate larson has the story from san francisco general hospital. luis campos is already assisting at san francisco general, translating for dr. elizabeth mur fphy in a diabetes clinic. luis is one of 15 incoming seniors from public high schools and san francisco in the east bay chosen for this summer's junior academy. >> it gives these kids a really early exposure to the medical field. all parts of it, not just being a physician but a physical

therapist. >> i saw within the medical field, i can help others. that's my main concern. >> reporter: luis goes for richmond high school and has been taking b.a.r.t. into san francisco for the program. his own father has diabetes. he says through his experience, he's been inspired to give back. >> i've seen the type of community that i come from, and they need a lot of help. >> the students are people we see to be assuring leaders and people that can effect change. >> reporter: robert ray is the director of the program, which takes the students from the operating room to workshops, providing unique opportunities for the students, many of whom will be the first to attend college. >> they may not have all the resources, but they do have the ability. >> reporter: luis hopes to pursue a career in physical therapy. kate larson, "abc7 news." a hungry bobcat hitten

rescued in the north bay is on the road to recovery. a hiker spotted it and took it to a ranger. they treated her for dehydration and ticks and fleas and sent her off to a rescue. she has two other bobcats to grow with, and in a few months, she'll return to the wild. >> very cute. next at 6:00, stop what you're doing and look at this incredible new video just in. flash flooding on the las vegas strip, no kidding. the rescue effort made near a huge tourist attraction. a live look over the east bay hills where temperatures soared to 85 degrees in the med of night. yes, you heard that correctly. spencer christian will explain what happened. hundreds of fans flocked to a pop-up

inside a parking structure on in the las vegas strip. the national weather service says the strip received a record amount of rainfall today in that monsoonal pattern we've been talking about. firefighters rescued six people from the rushing waters behind the lynx hotel and casino, across the street from ceasar's palace. another person is missing after being swept away in a different part of vegas. one person says a taxi was pushed for 200 feet by the flood water. in southern california, people are cleaning up after an enormous flood threatened to wash away a desert town north of l.a. >> the water damaged homes and roads but not the spirit of residents there. sid garcia of our sister station has the story. >> reporter: a lot of rain in a very short amount of time has left acten in a muddy mess. residents spent much of the day removing much of the debris that

came along with this fast-moving river. people say the hail, rain and strong winds lasted 15 to 20 minutes. but when it was over, they knew that would spend hours cleaning up a big mess. dr. reed logan has been in this building for more than 25 years. he says he's never seen a flood quite this bad. >> i've never seen water ever come up that high before. so i was hopeful and fairly confident that we wouldn't get, you know, we wouldn't get flooded here. >> reporter: hillary mulligan cleared out the soggy carpet and padding. she says she was home when the rain just pelted her home and flooded it. >> it wouldn't stop. i was like come on, then it flooded my kitchen and my whole house, i just -- what are you going to do?

>> reporter: the heavy rain and flooding caught many off guard. some got stuck in their cars and trucks and a few, like this man, needed to be rescued. his employer said he's doing fine and back to work today. if there is a silver lining, in yesterday's storm, no one got hurt. sid garcia, "abc7 news." and here in the bay area, that same weather system caused an interesting weather phenomena. in the dead of night, temperatures in a few places soared up to 95 degrees for a few minutes. >> it was a weird spike. spencer christian has more. >> we'll show you what was happening overnight. we had showers drifting through the bay area and a couple of strong thunderstorm cells. and what happens with a nighttime thunderstorm, there's a sudden downdraft of cool, dry air as it rushes downward it compresses and warms rapidly. that's what causes the temperature spike. let me show you what happened

last night. temperature at 11:00 p.m. was 86 degrees. because of the rapid warming, the temperatures spiked up to 95 degrees around midnight. a similar thing happened in oakland. 4:00 a.m., the temperature was 73 degrees. because of that sudden downdraft and the compressing and warming, temperatures spiked up to 85 degrees. didn't last long, but it felt weird while it was happening. ama? >> thank you, spencer. across the country flash flooding came to an unlikely place this morning, brooklyn. flood waters caused by a thunderstorm gushed down this stairwell in the city. these pictures were taken by a postal worker. this was one of many flash floods around new york today. more flash flooding to tell you about. hikers at zion national park in utah formed a human chain to cross a river.

the hiker who took the video said it was powerful watching people help each other. president trump began a 17-day working vacation at private golf club. according to a tally kept by the associated press, president trump has spent 12 of his 28 weekends in the office away from the white house. most at his properties in palm beach, florida or bedminster, new jersey, where the president is tonight. good time to be clearing out of the white house, not only for the president but the staff. because the west wing is undergoing a number of repairs this month, including the 27-year-old heating and cooling system. the work includes repairing the south steps, renovating the mess kitchen and the i.t. system. the work is expected to be finished by august 21. researchers have discovered

a way to trick self-driving cars. covering street signs with stickers can confuse the vehicle's vision systems. slight changes to stop signs caused one vehicle to identify them as a 45-mile-per-hour speed limit sign. carmakers may have to use artificial intelligence to help determine if a sign is out of place. >> that's not good. dprkendrick lemar continue his tour. earlier today, "abc7 news" was in san francisco to check out his pop-up shop in chinatown. fans grabbed up all the items once the doors opened. many of them have been following his career for years. >> in 2012 when he dropped one of his albums, that's when he start eed blowing up. after that, he's just been top hip-hop artist in this

another san francisco house is about to become legendary. the owner wants to pay tribute to latin rock stars like carlos santana by transforming the house into a huge mural. >> leeann melendez gives us a tour. >> reporter: many famous musicians have recorded inside this small studio. his newest project lives outside these walls. >> right here was abel and the prophets. this is when arsilio started the band soro. >> reporter: he wanted to create a shrine honoring the musicians. the idea for a mural was born.

shares of blue apron fell more than 6% after the company announced plans to close a facility. blue apron is eliminating more than 1200 jobs in jersey city, new jersey. employees were given the option to transfer to a new facility. the company says about 800 employees have opted to make the move. blue apron has a production facility in the bay area in richmond. late in the summer, it's all about impossible

let's tee it up. steph curry is phenomenal athlete and it shows on the basketball court. but his second passion is golf, as he tries to make the cut today in round two of the ellie mae classic in hayward.

he started the day four over and bogeyed four of the first nine holes for a 39 on the first nine. the projected cut was three under. he's eight over. but he would have to play 11 under for the final 12 holes. you find out hey, these guys are good. they wouldn't be pros if they weren't. steph curry was having fun just being part of the event. he will not make the cut today, but will have memories of a lifetime playing the part of a professional golfer for two days. well, we have another potential home for colin kaepernick, the miami dolphins lost their quarterback yesterday and debating whether ryan tannehill needs surgery. he missed the final four games last year, and they just hope he'll be available by season's end. matt moore is the backup, but

to al gore's oscar winning documentary on climate change. it was released ten years ago, the sequel explores what has changed since the first film, and most disturbingly, what hasn't. more so than its predecessor, it takes you behind the scenes for negotiations on efforts to combat global warming. unlike ten years ago, there's less fiery debate whether human activity is contributing to the climate change that we are seeing all around the world. all leading experts seem to agree that we are, if not causing the significant warming of our planet, clearly accelerating it dramatically. but while the scientific debate is largely settled, the political one rages on. in the interim, what really matters is that scientists and citizens keep the pressure on the politicians to act, while there's still time to have an impact. i always appreciate hearing from you.
