♪ good goes around and around... ♪ good morning, everyone. i'm carolyn tyler. thanks to joining us on sunday, august 6. let's start with a quick look at the weather. >> good morning, everyone. you can see the marine air. low clouds have spilled into the bay and this will bring us some cooler conditions this afternoon. right now in the 50s and 60s. san francisco half moon bay at 59, san mateo 60, and san jose 64. as well as answer oktioch. we have clouds and fog and even

drizzle along the coast. it will be slow to clear this afternoon. and we'll see mostly sunny conditions by 4:00 with the clouds at the coast. temperatures will be cooler inland in the upper 80s around the bay mid-70s and 60s at the coast. i'll have your complete accuweather forecast coming up. this morning there is tighter security at dolores park in san francisco after a triple shooting just a few days ago. law enforcement joined neighbors during a movie night at the park last night to try to ease everyone's fears. as abc 7 reports, five suspects still on the loose. ♪ >> reporter: at dolores park, movie fans cut loose to "footloose," all under the watchful eye of police, park rangers and private security. >> it makes us feel a lot safer. >> reporter: this is the first major event since thursday's shooting.

the suspects crossed the foot bridge into the park at church street wearing bandanas and hoodies. and then they started shooting at three people, a 16-year-old boy and a 37-year-old and a 69-year-old man. san francisco police have upped patrols assigning two officers to the park daily which didn't go unnoticed by this group. >> we try to be out by sundown because generally it's not the best place. especially because of the shooting, you don't want to put yourself in a situation that could be a bad thing. >> reporter: but for the most part, movie night attendees didn't want to let thursday's shooting stop a tradition that makes san francisco what it is. >> you just enjoy it too much. it's part of the city and we live in the city and we don't want to be afraid. >> i kind of felt it was a one time incident that occurred and it's not something that we hear about, i haven't heard about it in the neighborhood. >> reporter: event organizers

say the turnout is the same as any other movie night. abc 7 news. developing news in san francisco where police are searching for young women who pepper sprayed at least one passenger aboard a b.a.r.t. train, it happened around 8:30 last night at the embarcadero b.a.r.t. station. b.a.r.t. radio gives us more information. the suspects escaped. it is unclear whether they made off with any stolen property.

san francisco police are investigating a stabbing aboard a muni shuttle bus, it happened just after 9:00 last night at market and delores streets. authorities say there were two passengers involved in the stabbing. no word yet on the extent of the injuries or if anyone has been arrested. a stubborn fire that broke out last week in the hills above uc berkeley is completely out this morning. firefighters fully contained the flames yesterday. the fire started wednesday afternoon on grizzly peak. investigators are looking into whether it was set intentionally. drone view 7 gives us a look at the scorched land. firefighters say 20 acres of brush and trees burned. we're learning more about the suspects of a nationwide manhunt found here in the bay area. two men are accused of killing a hairstylist in chicago, a stabbing so violent police say

the knife broke off in the victim. abc 7 news reporter cornell barnard has our story. >> reporter: two wanted men on the run, now in custody for the brutal murder of a chicago man. 42-year-old wyndham lathem surrendered peacefully and drew warren, an employee at oxford university in england, gave himself up in san francisco around the same time. both men face first-degree murder charges in the stabbing death of 26-year-old trenton cornell-duranleau. chicago police found his body nine days ago describing a horrific crime scene inside professor lathem's chicago apartment. the same day an hour away in wisconsin, the two suspects made a mysterious $1,000 donation to a public library in his name. investigators believe professor

lathem and the victim had a relationship. according to chicago police, lathem sent a video to family and friends apologizing for the murder saying it is the biggest mistake of my life. lathem seen here in another online video was a microbiologist at northwestern for ten years. >> i had him give a talk to some students about his research. and he just seemed like a perfectly normal guy. >> reporter: san francisco police denied our request for a jailhouse interview with andrew warren. they say he's under medical supervision. both suspects are awaiting extradition back to illinois. crnell barnard, abc 7 news. santa rosa police shot and killed a man armed with a knife. they had arrived at a home after receiving a call about a man quote acting crazy. they found him under a bed and when they wouldn't drop a knife, they used what they are calling electronic control devices and chemical agents. he still refused to drop the knife. officers say he advanced on them, at least one opened fire hitting the man killing him.

body cam video recorded the incident. the video will not be released while the incident is being investigated. a man has been deported and the man with him faces an uncertain future. the mercury news reports that nunez was kicked out of the country, authorities detained the two back in may when they reported to a new construction job at traverse air force base. their arrest sparked protests. neither man was allowed a trial. a sad but selfless day for sikh communities as tribute was paid to the memory of those killed in a 2012 massacre. abc 7 news was in san jose where volunteers prepared hygiene kits for the group next door solutions to domestic violence.

five years ago six were killed. the work was a way of giving back in remembrance. >> today we commemorate that tragedy by honoring the victims. and with selfless service. >> other communities also served meals to the homeless in san francisco to helping at a habitat restoration project. the heavyweights of high school sports in the east bay came together this weekend to support a paralyzed east bay teenager and his family. jake havier broke his neck in a pool. he was paralyzed the day before his graduation from high school. football players from his alma mater and also rival schools came together to play a charity game benefiting him.

the fundraiser was organized by legendary football coach bob latticer who says the boy has big plans to accomplish. >> he's headed off to cal poly. needs special help to get around to his classes. and, you know, insurance doesn't cover it, i thought we could defray some of the costs and get him going on his first year at school. >> they hope to raise $100,000. we have a link on our website abc7news.com if you would like to contribute. oakland as outfielder matt joyce has been suspended for two games after he shouted anti-gay profanities at a fan and challenged him to a fight. it happened right after this at bat by joyce in the eighth inning of thursday night's game. joyce posted a seven part tweet saying he is beyond sorry for what happened and called it a truly regrettable moment. manager bob melvin had this to

say before last night's game. >> take the proper steps to work on it and he's paid the price. so these next two games and hopefully learned a valuable lesson. >> the as will donate $54,000 of joyce's lost salary to outreach programs in the lgbt community. starting today, some bus riders in san mateo county will have to take a detour. bus lines have eliminated 11, 43 and 89. last month the board of directors voted to stop those routes because few people use them. it will save $170,000. transportation officials say that the canceled routes serve schools in daly city, millbrae and atherton. they ran in the afternoons in areas other lines already cover. so it's about that back to

thinking of traveling out of the country, there is a new place to apply for passports in richmond. the city clerk's office will begin taking passport applications tomorrow. that office will open mondays and wednesdays from 10:00 to 4:00. and on fridays from 10:00 to 2:00. you must make an appointment in advance. well, the smash hit musical "hamilton" turned down the lights in san francisco. the cast made its final curtain call last night before a sold out crowd. the audience cheered and gave them a standing ovation. the musical won't be back in san francisco until 2019. abc 7 news lonni rivera has more on the last show.

abc 7 news was there as the group of 15 incoming high school seniors were recognized for finishing a program that allowed them to shadow doctors and nurses. the program prepares the students for a career in medicine at a very young age. and it's exactly what you would expect from a big city on hospital. >> walk in the footsteps with physicians, they are able to see how can i fit into this, where are my strengths. >> many of the high schoolers chosen will become the first in their families to move on to college. ♪ that is our morning anchor bringing the spirit of aloha to the san mateo event center for this year's aloha festival. abc 7 is a proud sponsor of the two day event which celebrates

music, food and culture of hawaii and other pacific islands. the event is a huge draw for bay area residents, many of whom identify with the vibe of the islands. >> so friendly and relaxed. i went to school there, and so it brings back lots of happy memories. >> the event continues today. admission is free, but parking is $15. happening today, a san francisco nonprofit is celebrating 30 years of keeping kids off the streets and in school. the omega boys club and either program alive and free has mentored thousands. tonight there will be a special reception for its supporters. this video is from a couple years ago when the nonprofit celebrated its 200th college graduate. the omega boys club began in the

you can see the pretty sunrise tat just hatcheppened. we have low clouds, but temperatures inland east bay are a little cooler compared to yesterday at this time. so we're seeing a lot more 50s out there. napa 56, fairfield 59, livermore in the low s60s. open the windows. by 9:00, still clouds cover in parts of the east bay and then this afternoon pretty much sunny for everyone. very typical pattern except at the coast where we'll still see the clouds and then it will start to push in once again overnight tonight into tomorrow. but highs today will be comfortable and near average. in san jose, look for a warm 80 degrees there, and gilroy 87. lower peninsula, we'll be mimd. and at the coast once again in the 60s. if you are heading out in san

francisco, closer you are to the coast, the more you need a jacket especially with the sea breeze. downtown san francisco getting up to 66. and look for 80s and 70s through parts of the north bay. petalu petaluma, 76. lake ports warmer. 70s through the east bay. berkeley at 70. warmer as we head farther south into freemont. and inland, upper 80s today. mid-80s in walnut creek, police police an ton. tonight the fog currents again and we showed you the circulation that will push the marine layer in again. we'll be more comfortable overnight. for tomorrow, the pattern is on

welcome back. we're starting this half hour with a look at the weather with frances. we're seeing the cooling

marine air make its way in once again. gray skies over most of the bay area at this point and temperatures right now are in the 50s and 60s. oakland 60, 62 in fremont, mid-60s in antioch. but with the sea breeze, it will be a bit cooler inland this afternoon. we also might deal with some sprinkles and some drizzle during the morning hours. it will be slow to clear, but by lunchtime, the clouds will be at the coast and inland numbers will be hitting the upper 80s this afternoon instead of the low 90s. around the bay really comfortable, perfect weather. temperatures in the mid-70s. and along the coast, it will stay in the 60s throughout the day. sunset at 8:12. your complete accuweather forecast coming up. we have developing news this morning. ucla notifying thousands of students about a possible security breach. the university says a hacker gained access to a server

containing personal data from more than 30,000 current and former students. officials don't believe the hacker stole any sensitive information, but they are offering free identity protection services for one year. chaos saturday on an american airlines flights heading to philadelphia. severe turbulence sent people flying through the plane. ten crew members and passengers were taken to the hospital once the plane landed. no immediate word on the severity of those injuries. abc news reporter elizabeth herr has more. >> reporter: scare in the air with extreme turbulence. >> there was slight turbulence for about five seconds and then it felt like the whole plane was in free-fall. >> and they said for the flight attendants to get to their seats and they didn't even have time. it started shaking and took a big drop. babies screaming, people hitting the ceilings. flight attendant broke his arm. there was some blood.

>> reporter: shaken eyewitnesses describing the plight of flight attendants and fellow passengers injured amid chaos. >> the gentleman behind us hit the ceiling. and they had just served drinks, should drinks went everywhere, food went everywhere. >> reporter: the midair emergency apparently catching the crew offguard. >> right after that, they told us there was unexpected turbulence that wasn't on their radar. >> reporter: in all 299 people were on board flight 759 traveling from athens, greece to philadelphia when it hit the rough air. the plane landing safely saturday afternoon. in the end, philadelphia emergency responders took ten people to the hospital, three passengers and seven crew. elizabeth herr, abc news, new york. president trump is away from the white house at his estate in bedminster, new jersey.

is making progress. we've brought in a number of witnesses, we're trying to understand how we were so vulnerable, whether any u.s. persons were involved and what we can do to make sure it never happens again. >> he also hosted a town hall in livermore and last week he went on a hike with people in castro valley. the u.s. government has called off the search for three missing marines after their aircraft crashed into the sea off the east coast of australia while trying to land. 23 people aboard the aircraft were rescued. the mv 22 osprey similar to this one went in to the water during training with australian forces. no word yet what caused that crash. a california town with a population of 20, yes, 20 people has been sold to an arizona marijuana company to create a pot friendly tourist destination. the town is called nipton, about an hour from vegas just across

♪ >> reporter: this marching band has a history. >> this was the band. >> reporter: the cappuccino high school marching band's reputation began in the 1950s. this marching band was so popular in the day that they were invited to perform at president kennedy's inauguration in 1961. copies of newspaper articles highlighting the event live behind this glass display. but with time, the band lost some of its thunder until this past year when they got a new director and money. grants from the pg and e pipeline explosion settlement are currently being used for school music programs. the band received $19,000 last year and will get another $116,000 over the next three years. >> they wanted to ensure that the community would benefit from that event that really kind of destroyed a neighborhood and

affected everybody in the area. >> reporter: the band has now nearly doubled in size. now they can make more instrument, unforms and travel. >> seeing the band grow from barely anything, it's -- wow. >> one of the goals for us as a band is to get back to that place of being, oh, that's cappuccino. they know what they're doing. >> reporter: this week students were already practicing for what they hope will be a memorable year. in san bruno, lyanne melendez, abc 7 news. right now the band is 52 members strong. cappuccino plans to perform at disneyland this year. coming up, a musical celebration of the life of jerry garcia, where dead heads will pay tribute to the famous band's founder.
