. . >> announcer: live where you live, this is abc7 news. it just felt like hi to get in there and help someone, so i did. >> a man runs into a burning apartment building in berkeley. tonight his quick actions may have saved someone's life. good evening. i'm eric thomas. that fire forced evacuations of that entire building tonight. it started just after 7:00 on addison street between sacramento and acton and put out smoke that could be seen for miles. abc7 news reporter alyssa harrington is here with the latest on this developing news. >> reporter: eric, one man was critically burned in this fire, but it could have been a whole lot worse if not for the brave actions of one neighbor who ran into this burning building. the fire started around 7:15 tonight. our emeryville camera shows the

thick, dark cloud of smoke over the city. katherine tippett shared this video of the flames pouring out of a third story unit. inside that burning apartment was a man lying on the floor and yelling for help. a man who lives in the building next door saw the smoke and knew he had to do something. he ran into that burning building and helped the man get outside before rescuers got there. >> i started yelling to him, like get up, get out. get out. then finally he kind of snapped out of it and came to. so i said, don't worry about your stuff. just get up and get out. his hands were all burned. but i just felt like hi to get in there and help someone, so i did. >> reporter: the victim was taken to highland hospital to be treated for burns. at one point, all 27 units were evacuated because of the fire. >> i looked out of my window and saw flames shooting out. heard a big knock on my door. >> there was just a ton of smoke billowing out at the time. even from university avenue you could see the smoke, dark black smoke. >> reporter: most of the

residents are back in their apartments tonight. two units are damaged. one has extensive fire damage, the other water damage. the red cross is helping out those residents who can't go home tonight. reporting live in berkeley, elissa harrington, abc7 news. >> thank you very much. a letter that was circulated internally at google has the tech world talking tonight. in a ten-main manifesto, a software engineer blasts the company for its diversity efforts, saying gender gaps are biological differences, not the result of sexism, lilian kim joins us from google's san francisco offices with more on this story. lilian? >> reporter: eric, the letter caught the public's attention when google employees began tweeting about it. since then, it's created quite a backlash and a response from the company's diversity chief. it's yet another example of what many believe is a sexist culture throughout silicon valley. this time, it came from a google employee.

gizmodo obtained the letter written by a software engineer who hasn't been publicly identified. in it, he says we need to stop assuming that gender gaps imply sexism. women on average have more nur ott citizen many. this may contribute to the higher levels of anxiety women report and to the lower number of women in high-stress jobs. >> it's really discouraging to see this kind of thing raise itself. >> reporter: rosemary joyce is an anthropology -- largely due to opinions like that of the letter's author, not due to any biological factors. >> having an unwelcoming atmosphere where you're told that you're probably not someone who belongs there makes it hard to succeed. so the memo itself is creating a chilly climate, which will make it harder for people to succeed. >> reporter: google's latest diversity report says women make up only 20% in tech roles and 25% in leadership roles. in response to the letter, danielle brown e-mailed

employees over the weekend, reiterating the company's commitment to diversity. changing a culture is hard, and it's often uncomfortable, but i firmly believe google is doing the right thing. tech workers we talked with agree. >> i think women should be able to work in tech and be encouraged to work in tech. >> when there's a diverse workforce, you have different opinions. you have different ideas. you have >> reporter: lilian kim, abc7 news. a half dozen people attending a company picnic at menlo college escaped serious injury when a large branch collapsed right next to them. menlo park fire responded to the fire yesterday afternoon. a branch broke off an oak tree and strug several people. another two dozen people moved out of the way just before the limb came crashing down. >> i think as a result of several years of drought and then a winter of heavy rains contributed to the limb breaking. >> paramedics treated a woman

for a blow to the head, and a 1-year-old child suffered scratches. a hayward man shot at after pursuing a truck thief. it all began outside a home on gamble court in hayward where a man took off with someone else's truck. abc7 news reporter cornell bar nar has our story tonight from hayward. >> he stuck his head out the window. >> reporter: stacy jetton talks about confronting the man who stole his truck on saturday. he was visiting a friend on gambl court in hayward. >> i thought i heard my truck start up. >> reporter: his dodge ram truck had been ripped off. this neighbor saw it happen. jetton borrowed his buddy's truck to follow the thief. >> i pulled up to the back of him and said, hey, that's my truck. and he said, so and so you, and pulled out a gun and shot. so then he took off, and i didn't bother to follow after that. >> reporter: the gunman missed. jetton called 911.

hayward police briefly chases the man through city streets where he crashed into several cars. at one point police say the suspect drove toward officers. one officer opened fire, missing the suspect, who crashed the stolen truck moments later and was arrested. neighbors say another car was stolen from the same hayward address last week. >> at the end of the day, you know, it's just you have to be watchful. >> reporter: neighbors now on alert. stacy jetton says his truck seen here before the crash was totaled. he says next time he'll leave chases to the cops. >> i was glad i didn't get shot. >> reporter: police are too. in hayward, cornell barnard, abc7 news. oakland police are investigating a shooting that left as many as six people injured this afternoon. it was first reported on e street between 105th and 106th avenues at about 4:43 this afternoon. some of the victims were taken to area hospitals by civilians, others by ambulance. police do not believe any of the injuries are life-threatening, and no word yet on suspects or

motive in the shooting. two murder suspects arrested in the bay area on friday are facing extradition proceedings. wyndham lathem, a northwestern university professor is scheduled to appear in alameda superior court. andrew warren, an employee from oxford university in england, is expected to appear in court in san francisco. they're accused in the stabbing death of cosmetologist trenton cornell-duranleau in a chicago high-rise, police found duranleau's body badly mutilated inside professor lathem's apartment nine days ago. friends say prior to his death, duranleau and lathem were dating and he wanted out of that relationship. >> guys aren't caught and there's a murder seven floors beneath is. it's kind of weird. now that they're in custody, i'll sleep better in night. >> warren arrived in chicago three days before the murder. a woman is pleading tonight to get her priceless stolen memories back.

surveillance video shows a man rummaging through liz kaine's parked car in san francisco. it helped on june 6th on olive street. the man leaves in a hurry with several backs. cai kaine was in the process of moving and said she forgot she had a bag of clothes in the trunk of her car with six laptops. videos of her dad who has stage 4 cancer were on those computers. now that her dad has only been given months to live, those videos are everything to her. she says whoever has her items now, she just wants them back, no questions asked. witnesses caught a brutal attack on a woman at a gas station in los angeles on video. a lyft driver says she was the victim of road rage that ended in robbery. tenicia bennett had just dropped off a customer and stopped to gas up when two women, a driver and her passenger, jumped out of a car and began hurling insults and punches. they grabbed tenicia by the hair and dragged her and threatened other customers to tried to intervene. >> i did not think that i would

pthought i would experience ave something like that. >> the attackers took her wallet, her phone, and her rent money. lapd has been able to trace the car's license plate and has a lead on the suspects. lyft issued a statement saying, our thoughts are with tenicia as she recovers from this terrible ordeal. we're learning tonight what caused a thrill ride to fail at the ohio state fair. the manufacturer of the fireball says its investigation found that excessive corrosion on the interior of a support beam led to last month's accident. an 18-year-old man was killed. seven other people were hurt when the ride broke apart. the fireb ridet the santa cruz beach boardwalk remains closed until cal osha inspectors finish their safety tests. ucla is alerting thousands of students about a possibility security breach. the university says a hacker gained access to a server containing personal data for more than 30,000 current and former students. the school doesn't believe the hacker stole any sensitive information. it's offering people affected

new at 11:00, a bay area family went to six flags discovery kingdom for a day of fun, rides, and exciting shows. what any got was a special visit six months in the making. abc7 news reporter elissa harrington was there. >> reporter: this is the moment technical sergeant jacob thomas surprised his kids, seeing them for the first time in six months. >> i was just like -- yeah, tears just starting coming from my eyes. >> reporter: the emotional reunion took place at six flags discovery kingdom in vallejo. sergeant thomas was brought out on stage during the sea lion show. >> the new guy in this super cool uniform. >> ladies and gentlemen, it is my honor to introduce to you jacob thomas returning after six months deployment. >> reporter: his four children burst into tears. >> i'm thankful, you know. i have no words. >> reporter: sergeant thomas is an assistant flight schechief.

he just returned from kuwait earlier than expected. his wife kristen, who also actively serves, helped plan the surprise. >> i think it went great. they're all extremely happy. so i'm happy, they're happy. >> reporter: they even got to meet the other star of the show, a playful sea lion. mark barrino with six flags said they were honored to create this special moment for a military family. >> we knew it was a great opportunity to show our appreciation to the family and especially to sergeant thomas. >> the thomass are now looking forward to spending quality time together back home at the travis air force base. elissa harrington, abc7 news. a 9-year-old guardian of the galaxy is chasing a job at nasa. space movie fan jack davis from new jersey sent this letter to the agency asking for a position as a new planetary protection officer. that's a scientist working to prevent possible contamination from samples brought from space. jack's letter said he was qualified for the job because he saw so many alien and superhero movies. he got a thank you letter back

from nasa. no job offer contained in it, but nasa told jack to do well in school, and someday he might get there. art from around the bay area found their heaven this weekend. abc7 news was in fremont for the fremont festival of the arts. thousands of people packed the downtown streets to check out works of art and in some cases purchased a piece or two. it's promoted the 9 largest street festival west -- it features live music, beer and wine, street performers and fun for the kids. a new friend that's caught on in one east bay city is making people's lives a little more colorful. people in pleasanton are finding painted rocks hidden throughout the city. one of the rocks -- once it is found, people are posting pictures on a facebook page and then hiding the rock for somebody else to find. now your accuweather forecast with drew tuma. >> today one of those days you wish you could just capture and just repeat it for the rest of the summer season. but if you liked today, you're

going to love tomorrow as well. it's a pretty nice pattern setting up the next couple of days. live doppler 7 showing you we've got the typical low cloud cover pushed in. you see satellite over pet alou ma, some cloudy skies from san francisco over to san ramon and south to san mateo. that picture outside right now atop pier 15 showing you the beautiful lights of the bay bridge. we've got the low cloud cover tonight, and in fact a lot of spots in the majority of the region will wake up to gray skies to start off on monday. the highlights we'll show you tonight right along the coast, a little bit of drizzle will develop, probably after midnight tonight. the fog will go around the bay and most of us will wake up to gray skies. clearing tomorrow is going to be very gradual back to the coastline. it's going to be a gradual warm-up tomorrow and that's going to lead to very comfortable afternoon conditions. look at that. you don't like the heat. it looks like the intense heat is going to stay away the next seven days. out there right now, current numbers. 60s in most spots. 62 right now, that number in

oakland. 60 in san francisco. 63 in san jose. 58, though, in san ramon. we'll do that as well in gilroy. overnight tonight you do notice we have the cloud cover right along the coast stretching in and around the bay. there's that chance of some drizzle right along the coast as well. most of us will drop into the mid-50s to lower 60s as our starting temperatures on monday. hour by hour, future weather. we're going to stop at 6:00 in the morning. i want to show you, you see a lot of gray on the screen. that is the low cloud cover that many of us will wake up to, even we do expect fog first thing in the morning. by midday, still some patchy fog around the bay. thick cloud cover along the coast. temperatures are going to slow to warm throughout the day on monday. starting in the south bay, very comfortable in san jose tomorrow. high of 77 degrees. lots of afternoon sunshine. warmer, though, in morgan hill. 85 degrees. 74 that number in sunnyvale. 72 palo alto, the same in menlo park.

a girl's little league softball team from virginia has learned a tough lesson about the dangers of social media. the atly junior softball team has been disqualified from the junior league world series after the 12 to 14-year-olds won their first game, one of the team members posted on snapchat a picture showing some girls giving the middle finger to the host team in washington state. the coach says the post came

ten-page memo blasting the company's diversity efforts. in it, a software engineer suggests gender gaps are because of biology, not the result of sexi sexism. the vice president of diversity e-mailed employees over the weekend saying the company is committed to diversity and changing culture and believes it's moving in the right direction. four children were in shock, the good kind, when their father pat six flags discovery kingdom tonight. air force sergeant jacob thomas returned from kuwait and spre surprised his family. it was a happy reunion for all. cleanup is under way in oklahoma, new orleans, and parts of the midwest tonight after destructive tornadoes and cloudbursts. abc7 news reporter richard cantu has our story. >> reporter: the ef-2 tornado ripped through tulsa in the middle of the night. with wind speed over 110 miles per hour. the twister roaring into a strip shopping mall. three restaurants still open.

>> dispatch started getting calls of people who were trapped in the restaurants because the roofs had started collapsing in on them. >> reporter: in the greater tulsa area, at least 30 people hospitalized, two of them with life-threatening injuries. daylight revealing extensive damage. windows blown out at this high rise. rubble in the streets. power lines down. some residents complaining that they received mobile tornado alerts, but the sirens remained silent. >> tornado warning. but no sirens. >> reporter: in new orleans, nine inches of rain dropped in just a few hours. many residents surrounded by several feet of water. >> i'm just stuck here. i'm stuck. i can't go nowhere. >> reporter: the only way getting out, by boat. >> we all need boats. we all need boats, and we all need to be able to use them at times like this. >> reporter: and in kansas city, torrential rains thrashing windshields and flooding roadways. water rescues required for some

stranded motorists. rt of that storm now heading northeast. richard cantu, abc news, new york. in florida tonight, a sinkhole emergency north of tampa keeps getting worse. two more homes condemned on sunday, and authorities facing the question can they save that neighborhood? here's abc news reporter an dree yen banker. >> reporter: it's the supersize sinkhole that keeps swallowing more of this florida block. tonight, another two homes deemed unsafe. more homeowners displaced. in all, six homes have been destroyed or condemned on ocean pines drive, plagued by a depression the size of a large pond. it appeared july 14th, growing to 225 feet in just a few hours. this weekend, drone video shows the sinkhole has now expanded to 260 feet at its widest point, more than three quarters of length of a football field and 50 feet deep. residents nearby remain on edge. >> i think that the surrounding

area can't help but feel questionable and unsafe because there is no guarantee. >> reporter: demolition crews say they expected to see some erosion as they worked. a 10 by 80 foot long section of earth collapsing saturday. but new cave-ins proved so dangerous, crews had to leave, returning to work from inside the sinkhole by boat. the united way is helping displaced homeowners. some residents were actually allowed back to their properties. bu because the sinkhole is so unstable, if they need to evacuate, they'll hear a knock at the door. the nationwide manhunt for an accused rapist is expanding after his dramatic escape. brandon powell overpowered a van transport near toledo, ohio, stealing the deputy's gun. while sitting in the back of the transport, powell somehow got the deputy in a headlock. the car crashed and he took the officer's weapon. the inmate then forced the officer to undo his shackles beforehand cuffing him to the steering wheel. then he fled on foot.

>> you don't take a pistol from one of my deputies and threaten him with it. he's going to be held accountable. >> tonight, u.s. marshals and the fbi are joining ohio law enforcement in the manhunt for that armed and dangerous escapee. taylor swift is going head to head with a former radio deejay in a legal battle. david mueller is suing swift for $3 million claiming her reps pressured the radio station to fire him. he lost his job after swift said he put his hand up the bottom of her dress and groped her while taking a photo with her in denver four years ago. swift is countersuing for assault and battery. >> she's very sure about being a victim of this groping, and she wants to prove that she has not fabricated this. >> jury selection is set to begin tomorrow. both swift and mueller are expected to testify. california state university is taking a big step to get more students to graduate within four years. starting this fall, incoming freshmen will no longver to take

math and english placement tests or complete mandatory remedial courses. in past years, nearly 40% of first-year students have been required to take the courses for no credit. that requirement often sidetracked students' degree work. >> if i go back a few years, it was not uncommon for students to have one whole year that was just in those non-credit-bearing courses. >> student assessments will now be made through standardized testing or high school gpa. the hope is to boost the four-year graduation rate from just 19% to 25% by the year 2025. now we're hearing from the lobstermen who hauled in the catch of their lives this week. a real national treasure. abc7 news reporter tom llamas explains. >> reporter: in acadia national park in maine, there are majestic sights. but two lobstermen recently saw something they couldn't believe. in the open water, just yards from their boat, a bald eagle struggling to stay afloat. >> i've never experienced
