we've just confirmed they have arrested this man cut on surveillance video. they say he attacked passengers on two trains in the past week for no apparent reason. thanks for joining us. i'm kristein sze. the attacks happened in san lone droe and in san francisco. abc 7 news reporter tiffany wilson is live with the latest. ity any. >> reporter: kristen, b.a.r.t. police released those images of that suspect during a very rare 6:00 a.m. news conference this morning, and within just a couple of hours of those images

going public, they now have the man under arrest. newly released photos from inside the b.a.r.t. train show the suspect involved in two random attacks. >> just completely unprovoked. no dialogue between him or the victims, and he just did the swinging of the cutters and the punch to the face. >> reporter: the man got on the train at 4:30 and you can see he's holding a can of beer and without provocation he slammed a pair of bolt cutters into the victim's head and the second attack took place saturday night as the train approached the embarcadero station. >> the passenger was standing near the hand rail, he took a swing at him and, missed and hit him in the mouth. > reporter: did he appear violent at all to you? >> very quiet, very

>> reporter: what was your suspect when you saw his image all over the news? >> i was shocked. said oh, my god? this is the first time since the train camera installation project was completed. >> thanks to the new camera system, we were able to get high quality photographs. >> reporter: this is certainly the outcome that b.a.r.t. police were hoping for when they released those photos. they said very clearly they wanted people to see this man's image because it was so crystal clear and then help them identify who he was and where they could find him. we expect to learn much more about the arrest at a news conference here at the lake merritt station at 11:30 so in just under half an hour. live in oakland, tiffany wilson, abc 7 news. >> great information, tiffany, thank you. the arrest of the b.a.r.t. beating suspect comes as the agency released new crime statistics. assaults and robberies are up systemwide. "the "chronicle"" released some

of the numbers comparing this year and last year showing robberies jumped by 35% in the first half of this year. in the same time period, assaults increased 27%. "the "chronicle"" also reports felony arrest dropped by 23%. police arrested 123 people for felony crimes from january to june. last year in the same time period they arrested 171 people. new developments, a court hearing is about to get underway for the northwestern associate professor accused of murder in chicago. also accuse an employee of oxford university in england. we just got a new statement from defense lawyers. abc 7 news reporter matt keller is live at the east county hall of justice in dublin. matt in the. >> kristen, we heard just about 30 minutes ago that this extradition hearing and arraignment will not be held until at least 11:30 this morning. the district attorney's office is still processing paperwork in this case, and we want to show you a picture of the suspect in this case. one of the suspects. he's a northwestern professor.

he's 42-year-old wyndham lathem who turned himself into authorities on friday. he smoke to us within the past 20 minutes, and here's what he had to say. >> since the beginning of this case, the defense has received dozens of phone calls and letters in support of dr. lathem. these are from friends and colleagues who have known him for decades, and they all describe him as a kind, intelligent and gentle soul and a loyal and trusted friend. what he is accused of is totally contrary to the way he has lived his entire life. >> reporter: lathem and andrew warren are accused in the stabbing death of 26-year-old cosmetologist trenton cornell-duranleau in chicago. police found duranleau's body inside professor lathem's apartment three and a half weeks ago. prior to his death they were dating and he wanted out of relationship. lathem's attorney says he came to the bay area before the

arrest because some of his closest friends and family are here. as for the other suspect, andrew warren, he's a treasury assistant as one of oxford's residential colleges in england. he's in jail in san francisco and we found he'll be in court on friday. lathem's attorney says he'll waive extradition so he can be sent back to chicago. reporting live in dublin, matt keller, abc 7 news. >> matt, thank you. developing news in oakland, police are investigating a shooting that left as many as six people hurt. it was first reported on estreet between 105th and 106th avenues late yesterday afternoon. now neighbors actually drove some of the victims to the hospital. a few were taken by ambulance. police say non-of the injuries are life-threatening. no word yet on suspects or a motive. happening now. the start of motions in the kate steinle murder trial. at today's pre-trial hearing

today it was decided what kind of evidence would be allowed. juan francisco lopez is accused killing stein i t--------- years ago sparking sanctuary cities. a crash on the bridge cleared around 7:00 this morning but for one hour this morning the bridge was practically a parking lot. three lanes of 80 heading into san francisco were initially closed after a car slammed into a motorcycle around 5:45 this morning. chp have not said what caused the crash. the motorcyclists and the driver are both expected to be okay. the chp is investigating a deadly crash in vallejo. new video shows the aftermath of a car ripped to pieces on the side of the road. officers say the honda civic was traveling on i-80 near the transition ramp to state route 37 when the driver made an

unsafe turn and the car flipped. the driver was ejected and was pronounced dead at the scene. officers have not released the identity. happening today, fire fighters are expected to make a final sweep at the grizzly fire in the east bay hills. 20 acres burned when the fire broke out last wednesday. half of the fire was on oakland land, and the other half was on land owned by t national lab. investigats are look nothing whether it was set intentionally. a man is recovering at the hospital after a two-alarm fire burned an apartment building in berkeley. it could have been much worse if it weren't for the actions of one brave neighbor. the fire started around 7:15 on addison street. at one point all 27 units were evacuated. inside the burning building was a man lying on the floor yelling for help. a man who lives in the building next door saw the smoke and ran to help the man get outside before rescuers got there. started yelling to him, like get up, get out, get out, and

then finally he kind of snapped out of it and came to so i said don't worry about your stuff. get up and get out. i felt like i had to in there and help someone so i did. >> the victim was taken to the hospital to be treated for burns. the red cross is helping residents of three units who were displaced by the fire. happening now, a manhunt is underway in missouri after an officer was shot and killed during a traffic stop. officer gary michael had been with the clinton police department less than a year. investigators say the 37-year-old pulled over a vehicle for a suspected registration violation last night. as he got out of his vehicle, the suspect also got out of his car and fired once at the officer. the investigators say ian mccarthy drove off before crashing his car into an embankment. officer michael died at the hospital. police set up several checkpoints throughout the city looking for the suspect. happening now, another urgent manhunt this one in ohio. authorities are looking for an

warm spot. 70 right now in san jose and mid-60s along the east bay s and 62 in san francisco a novato 70 and everybody else in the mid-660s in the north bay. a little breeze they afternoon and started at 1:00 to 11:00. you can see it shooting through the golden gate taking a left turn at the bay bridge and through the delta communities and gusting up to about 30 knots. let's take a look at what's happening to your temperatures down in the south bay. mid-to upper 70s for most of the south bay. 80s around los gatos and morgan hill h.as you move up the peninsula, start in the upper 70s and drop into the mid-70s. mid-60s along the coast into downtown. 67 in south san francisco k.up in the north bay we'll have temperatures right around 70 degrees. at sausalito 79 in santa rosa and as we go deeper into the forecast, how about 6 in richmond to about 76 those temperatures in the inland
