while i was on a combat patrol my c in baqubah, iraq,nned out. a rocket-propelled grenade took my arm off at the shoulder. when i came home, i felt alone. my family was around me, but i couldn't talk to them about what i'd seen and what i'd done. i remember just thinking, man, the way i am right now, i don't want to live. i was discharged from the army, and i've been working with the wounded warrior project since 2007. warriors don't have to be severely wounded to be with the wounded warrior project. we do have a lot of guys that have post-traumatic stress disorder. being able to share your story, i guess it kind of helps you wrap your mind around what did happen over there. just because you've left the military doesn't mean your life is over, because when these guys are coming home, i'm kind of leading and training them, instead of for combat, i'm leading and training them to heal. and if i come away with anything from the wounded warrior project, it's them giving my life back. my name is norbie, and yes, i do suffer

good morning. i'm kendis gibson. >> and i'm diane ma sadio. here are some of the top headlines we're following this morning on "world news now." the u.s. is bracing for another round of severe weather heavy rains and high winds spawned a possible tornado in maryland, carving a path of destruction. it even uprooted trees, flipped cars. we have the forecast ahead. government scientists say americans are feeling the impact of climate change right now. an unreleased report obtained by "the new york times" found that the average temperature in the u.s. has gone up dramatically since 1980, and human activity is largely to blame. the polls are open in kenya with more than 1,800 elected positions up for grabs, including the presidency. many of the country's 20 million

registered voters have waited in line for hours to cast their ballots. and ten years after his last swing, barry bonds says he wished he could have played one more season. bonds, you'll recall, left the game surrounded in steroid allegations and with a record 762 home runs. those are some of our top stories we're following this tuesday. it's august 8th. >> announcer: from abc news, this is "world news now." >> good morning, everybody, on this tuesday. we're going to start with the severe weather that is battering much of the east coast. >> maryland in particular is recovering this morning from the brunt of that storm's force after what's believed to have been a tornado blasted through the city of salisbury, tossing cars around parking lots like they were toys. >> yeah, look at those dramatic images there. and look at the radar, which shows a band of powerful storms stretching nearly 1,200 miles, from the deep south straight up into the northeast. abc's gio benitez starts us off.

>> reporter: powerful winds tossing cars like toys in salisbury, maryland, a possible tornado ripping through this town. >> oh! >> reporter: the driver of this car escaping with minor injuries, walls caving in, roofs shredded in this parking lot, all part of a storm system stretching all the way to texas. in san antonio, a race to save residents trapped in high water after more than 4 inches of rain fell in just three hours. >> water's just about going over the hood and i have one hispanic male sitting on the roof trying to get rescued. >> reporter: crews reaching that man, helping him crawl to safety, rescuers responding to more than 20 calls in all. dangerous lightning striking throughout the state, sparking this house fire outside dallas. a family of five sleeping inside just grateful to be alive. >> life is more important. all this can be replaced. >> reporter: this after a weekend of violent weather, three twisters striking the tulsa area, including this ef-2, winds up to 130 miles per hour on the ground for nearly seven

miles, more than two dozen injured. this shopping center ripped apart. >> friday, they had patrons in it, and the roof collapsed. >> reporter: customers and employees inside this friday's restaurant narrowly escaping, warnings going out by cell phone and weather radio, but those twisters moved through so quickly, officials say they didn't have time to sound the sirens. back in maryland, a community left picking up the pieces. and in maryland, thankfully, no serious injuries have been reported. crews are still trying to restore power there, and officials are still trying to figure out if that was, indeed, a tornado. more rough weather is ahead. gio benitez, abc news, new york. and as the eastern u.s. braces for more storms, the west is facing another near-record day of heat. >> accuweather's paul williams joins us now. it's a pretty busy day, paul. good morning. >> good morning, kendis, diane. we're looking for rounds of storms to continue to cause problems for the tennessee valley region, the southeast, going into the south-central part of the country, including dallas, houston, heavy showers, likelihood of flooding because of daily storms in new orleans,

atlanta, nashville, raleigh, jacksonville, possibly just shy of the tampa area. but not just there. we're concerned about widespread scattered showers that's going to reach throughout portions of the rocky mountains region, going into all of colorado, utah, into idaho and into the western slice of montana. then for the northwest, looking for storms to reach into montana and idaho, but look for smokey and hot conditions to continue for tuesday with near record heat that will kick in for us. then through friday, we'll have a high pressure system that will become stronger. dry air flow and more dangerous breathing conditions. kendis, diane? >> yeah, temperatures in the 90s today in portland. paul, thank you. a third boy scout has died after a tragic sailing accident in east texas. 11-year-old thomas larry was unresponsive after a cat marianne carrying three scouts collided with a power line and caught fire. thomas was riding with two older eagle scouts, ages 17 and 16, both of whom died at the scene. you can see a vigil there in remembrance of those young boys.

president trump will be briefed on the opioid crisis today as he continues his working vacation in new jersey. it's been 200 days since he took office and he's now on the defensive over new declining poll numbs. that new cnn poll shows the number of republicans who strongly approve of the president fell 14 points in six months. still, the president dismissed the polls as fake news, tweeting "the trump base is far bigger and stronger than ever before." attorney general jeff sessions is blasting a lawsuit over the justice department's crackdown on so-called sanctuary cities. the city of chicago is challenging a move by the trump administration to withhold certain grants from jurisdictions that limit cooperation with immigration authorities. now, the mayor there, rahm emanuel, says they won't be blackmailed into changing the city's values. >> chicago will not let our residents have their fundamental rights isolated and violated. >> unfortunately, cooperation too often around the country has

been impeded by the policies of a lot of cities, councils, and mayors. they're not protecting law-abiding citizens. they're protecting the criminals. >> well, sessions says chicago simply must comply with the law or forego taxpayer dollars. but the lawsuit argues that the government cannot unilaterally set new conditions without congressional approval. a former arizona tech worker faces charges that he tried to sell information to a mexican drug cartel. prosecutors say robert miller asked an informant for $2 million. in exchange, he allegedly planned to provide the cartel with computer access to track law enforcement. miller worked for honeywell. the company says he was fired for reasons not related to the case. 16 years after the 9/11 terror attacks in new york, the remains of another victim has now been identified. the identity of the 1,641st victim was discovered through dna retesting of remains recovered at ground zero in 2001. it's the first time in more than two years, actually, that a

previously unknown victim has th man's family wants to keep his identity private. about 40% of those killed, more than 1,100 victims, still remain unidentified. google has fired an employee behind a controversial memo criticizing its diversity policies. senior engineer james demore says he was fired after writing a memo on women in tech jobs on biological differences, not discrimination. that memo created a firestorm on social media and google's ceo accused him of advancing harmful gender stereotypes. demoore is now threatening to sue, saying the tech giant is intolerant of right-leaning views. as you know, many married couples renew their vows, but usually not on their honeymoon. >> mikaela and taylor flowers walked down the aisle again, courtesy of southwest airlines. a flight attendance had the couple repeat their vows. >> the bride wore a crown made from a bag of chips and toilet

she thought was a photo shoot, but men posing as photographers drugged her with a powerful succeed mine and then bound and stuffed into a suitcase, police say the men put her into the trunk of a car, drove her to a remote cabin near the french border and held her there, handcuffed to furniture for six days until she was finally released. according to investigators, the suspects used accounts on the dark web, an encrypted part of the internet not accessible through normal browsers, demanded the model's agent pay more than $300,000 to stop them from selling her as a sex slave. police say they recovered a flyer from the cabin where she was held advertising an online criminal network, and now they have a polish man in custody with suspected ties to online sex trafficking. police say they have evidence confirming their suspect spent time with the model, but the suspect has "a different

>> authorities in and around clinton, south of kansas city, have been going door to door, as you can see there. they're trying to track down a man who is charged with the murder of a rookie police officer. abc's alex perez is there in missouri. >> reporter: investigators in missouri on the hunt for this man, ian mccarthy, accused of shooting and killing a police officer after he was pulled over for a minor traffic violation. >> shots fired! officer down! officer down! i repeat, officer down! >> heavily armed officers going door to door searching for any sign of the suspect. the clinton, missouri, police officer, gary michael, pulled mccarthy over because his headlights were off. that's when authorities say mccarthy exited his vehicle and fired multiple shots at officer michael. he was ae to return fire, but the suspect sped away. >> he didn't he a chance. i mean it was a cowardly moment for that individual. >> reporter: mccarthy's abandoned vehicle located three blocks from the shooting. >> suspect believed to be running on foot from that location.

good morning, arlette. >> reporter: good morning, kendis and diane. north korea is sending a direct message to the u.s., threatening to make the u.s. pay dearly for the toughest sanctions yet on the regime. the north korean government blames the u.s. for the unanimously approved sanctions by the u.n. security council. north korea says they're a result of a heinous u.s. plot to isolate and stifle pyongyang. in an interview on fox, the u.s. ambassador to the u.n., nikki haley, described the sanctions as a gut punch to the regime, and said despite north korea's threats, the international community won't back down. >> but i think the signs that we're seeing from north korea, they're concerned back. now they see the international community is standing with one voice. now north korea has to respond. and yes, they're going to say, they're going to threaten, they're going to do all of these things, but we're not going to run scared from them. >> reporter: secretary of state rex tillerson recently said the u.s. would be willing to hold talks with north korea if it stops its missile tests, but the north koreans are saying that's not happening.

they are vowing to never place their nuclear program on the negotiating table. kendis and diane? >> arlette, thank you. and chicago has officially filed a lawsuit against the justice department, stemming from its status as a so-called sanctuary city. mayor rahm emanuel is challenging a move by the trump administration to withhold federal grant money from jurisdictions that limit cooperation with immigration authorities. emanuel argues that those new conditions would sew fear in the immigrant community. plus, he says, they have to be approved by congress. attorney general jeff sessions fired back, saying the administration will not give away money to cities that proudly violate the rule of law. the three marines killed when their osprey aircraft crashed off the coast of auralia ve now been identified. they are lieutenant benjamin cross and corporal nathan ordway, both members of the flight crew and private first class reuben velasco, who had just turned 19. they died when the osprey went down during a training mission over the weekend. the wreckage of the aircraft has also been located.

blistering attack on a sitting senator who criticized the administration's crackdown on leaks and said the russia investigation must be pursued. he also slammed "the new york times," all this as his poll numbers continue to decline. abc's arlette saenz joins with us details. arlette hasn't seen "the bachelorette" as of yet, so we won't say who got booted. >> no. and the president has not commented, but he tweets sometimes late at night. >> we'll see. >> he stayed largely out of the public eye for the first part of ens new jersey vacation or stay, but when it comes to twitter, he hasn't stayed silent as signs emerge that support from his core backers is starting to drop. president trump is hunkered down at his new jersey golf club as he receives another sign that approval among his supporters is starting to slip. a new cnn poll found the number of republicans strongly approving of the president fell 14 points since february. one top white house adviser is acknowledging the drop-off. >> his approval rating among republicans and conservative and trump voters is down slightly. it needs to go up.

they are telling him, just enact your program. >> reporter: but the president disagrees, tweeting "the trump base is far bigger and stronger than ever before." the president is away from the white house, but it's business as usual on twitter. one of his targets, senator richard blumenthal, who appeared on cnn monday morning. the commander in chief fired off a series of tweets, calling the democrat a phony vietnam con artist. back in 2010, blumenthal apologized for claiming he served in vietnam during the war when he actually was stationed in the u.s. as a marine corps reservist. the connecticut senator brushed off the president's attacks. >> i am not going to be distracted or bullied by these slurs. >> reporter: the president's twitter tirade didn't stop there. he blasted "the new york times" as "totally inept." president trump appeared to be irked by a report republicans, including his own vp, are laying the groundwork to run for president in 2020 if he doesn't seek a second term. vice president pence denied

that's the case, calling the story disgraceful and offensive. the white house says vice president pence will travel to bedminster later in the week for meetings with the president, and we're learning next week the president will have his first overnight stay here in new york since moving to the white house, so get ready for that traffic. >> oh, yeah. >> that will be fun. >> and arlette, i know you mentioned this new cnn poll has his approval rating falling. what else are we learning from that poll? anything else you found sticks out to you? >> so, drilling into that poll just a little bit and taking a look at whites without college degrees, the number of them strongly approving of the president has dropped by 12 points since february. this was a key group that helped propel him to the white house. that's a big number to watch. there's also some interesting numbers on the president's twitter habits. the poll found the majority of people don't think twitter is the most effective way for him to share his views on important issues, and 72% thinks it sends the wrong message to other world leaders. one other quick number. of all the tweets that the president sends, only 10% of

cop killer. heavily armed officers have been going house to house looking for ian mccarthy, charged in the first-degree murder of rookie police officer gary michael. apparently, it was during a traffic stop. mccarthy has a long criminal history. authorities consider him to be armed and dangerous. and authorities in texas have questioned a suspect in a road rage incident. the driver can be seen in this video pointing a gun at a fellow driver on a highway in lancaster. the suspect reportedly told police that he was acting in self-defense. he thought the cell phone in that driver's hand was a weapon. police say that man could face charges. and in cleveland, a 4-year-old boy is in serious condition after being shot in what's also being called a possible road rage incident. police say the shooting happened as the mother was driving with her son and 7-year-old daughter. she honked her horn to pass another car blocking the road. that car then allegedly followed the mother on to the freeway, firing multiple shots at her s they're now searching

for two suspects who thethk are armed and dangerous. a nohwestern university professor accused of fatally stabbing a man in chicago has now been fired from his job. wyndham lathem made his first court appearance in california on monday. he agreed to transfer back to illinois to face a murder charge. lathem and another suspect identified as andrew warren spent a week on the run. they surrendered to authorities on friday in california. now police say lathem and the victim had a relationship but had not exactly shared a motive for the brutal crime. lathem is being held without bail. and a man who was once part of a junior firefighter program faces nine counts of arson in california. authorities say they've linked the 23-year-old, jared samra, to fires that burned more than 900 acres and injured one firefighter. the wildfires took place in the san bernardino mountains over the past two months. samra faces up to 19 years in prison, if he's convicted. all right, time to check those old coat pockets, shake
