that's what's making news in america this morning. tuesday morning, president trump feeling some new pressure from the polls. a new survey shows the president's support weakening while voters say his tweeting is getting him in trouble. the details live from washington. also powerful storms move east leaving behind a big mess. some winds were so strong they threw around cars like toys. millions are still dealing with the threat. we have the forecast ahead. and new this morning, pirate threat on the high seas. luxury ship passengers forced to take extreme measures for days because of fears over being attacked. and a dog is dead after a fatal flight. hear why the family is blaming united airlines and what the airline is doing about it now.

we do say good morning on this tuesday, everyone. we'll start with the president on attack firing off more than a dozen tweets in less than a day as he marks 200 days in office with those dismal new poll numbers. >> the latest figures show the president's approval rating dipped to 38%, an all-time low in cnn polling. the president is also spending his working vacation taking direct aim at a sitting senator. abc's erielle reshef has the latest from washington. erielle, the president keeping busy on vacation. >> reporter: i would say so, kendis and diane. good morning. so, the president not giving much credence to those polling numbers, instead focusing on his fervent supporters and turning his sights on a democratic senator. the president spending more than two weeks away from the white house after a turbulent first six months in office. the most recent cnn polling putting donald trump's approval rating at just 38%. his favorability among

republicans, 59%. >> it needs to go up. they are telling him just enact your program. >> reporter: still the commander in chief isn't putting too much stock in the findings tweeting the trump base is bigger and stronger than ever before despite phony fake news polling. the president pointing to rallies in ohio, pennsylvania and iowa as evidence of solid support. on monday trump unleashing a tirade targeting senator richard blumenthal. the president reviving an old embarrassment for the lawmaker who once apologized for insinuating he served in the vietnam war. interesting to watch senator richard blumenthal of connecticut talking about hoax, russia collusion when he was a phony vietnam con artist, trump tweeted. the president incensed after blumenthal criticized the justice department's war on would-be leakers. >> i'm very concerned that the department of justice is weaponizing these laws for its personal and polital ends. >> reporter: in that interview

blumenthal also embracing special counsel robert mueller's investigation into possible collusion with the russians and the senator not backing down. >> i won't be distracted by these bullying tweets. if anything, they strengthen my resolve. >> reporter: and some interesting polling numbers or rather numbers on the president's twitter habit, i should say. the cnn poll found the majority of people don't believe that twitter is the most effective way for the president to be communicating his views. 72% saying it sends the wrong message to leaders around the world, and one other quick twitter number, only 10% of those polled have actually either responded to or shared one of the president's tweets. kendis, diane. >> and i'll give you a zero, the likelihood that the president will care about what we think about his tweeting habits. erielle reshef, thank you there in washington. well, the secretary of state rex tillerson is in thailand continuing to turn up the pressure on north korea. tillerson is urging thai officials to tighten their visa program to try to keep north korean businesses from setting

up an economic hub with sham companies. north korea has been threatening revenge on the u.s. over tough new sanctions imposed by the united nations. a new government report says americans are feeling the impact of climate change right now. the report obtained by "the new york times" found the average temperature in the u.s. has gone up rapidly since 1980 and recent decades have been the warmest of the past 1500 years. much of the blame is attributed to human activity, a claim questioned by president trump in the past. and the trump administration has to sign off on the report before it's made public. some scientists are now concerned it'll be suppressed. and much of the eastern u.s. is bracing for another round of violent weather. >> the latest radar shows a severe weather system stretching nearly 1,200 miles from way down there in the deep south you see the scene in houston to the northeast. >> now, that follows a day of dangerous storms in maryland where a possible tornado blew througthe city of salisbury flipping cars in this parking lot.

salisbury police posted to twitter that no injuries have been reported. other damage around the area included roofs torn off, walls caved in, trees as well uprooted and power lines in this d.c. suburb knocked down. >> moving over to delaware roads were inundated in ocean city but despi despite the flooded roads and repeated warnings of people not to drive through those flooded areas, it didn't stop these drivers from braving the water. and now let's take a closer look at today's forecast. good morning. looks like we're going to have more of the wet stuff than we need, particularly throughout salt lake city, nevada, utah going into southern portions of wyoming and all of colorado just to start off but that's not the only place. this is where it's going to be a problem for the southeast. steamy flow continuing out of the south will create continuous rain for the entire week for houston, jackson, mississippi, new orleans as well as atlanta, over towards jacksonville, tampa all the way down towards miami.

i'm accuweather meteorologist paul williams. tropical storm franklin has made landfall on the east coast of mexico's yucatan peninsula. franklin is expected to track across the peninsula and back over open water before making a second landfall on thursday in eastern mexico, possibly as a hurricane. franklin could dump more than a half a foot of rain across the yucatan before heading back offshore. the godson of mexican drug lord el chapo is now under indictment in the u.s. tommaso serrano pleaded not guilty to smuggling and other charges during a bail hearing in san diego. serrano's father is a reputed top lieutenant for joaquin "el chapo" guzman, the leader of the sinaloa drug cartel as you see him last year. el chapo arrested last year. the pentagon identified the three marines killed when their osprey aircraft crashed off the coast of australia. lieutenant benjamin cross and corporal nathan ordway both members of the flight crew as

well as private first class ruben velasco who just turned 19. all three died when the osprey went down during a training mission. the wreckage of the aircraft has also been located. and 16 years after the 9/11 terror attack the remains of another victim have been identified in new york. the identity of the 1,641st victim was discovered through dna retesting. about 40% of those killed more than 1,100 victims still remain unidentified. and also here in new york, an emotional and rare ceremony where lost purple heart medals were returned to the veterans and their families. >> fire department bagpipers opened that ceremony because one of the purple hearts was returned to a member of the department who was injured in iraq 13 years ago. seven other purple hearts were returned to veterans' families. they were awarded to men who fought in both world wars, korea and vietnam. well, still ahead, we

check out this video outside of tampa. that is a dog dangling from a second floor balcony. luckily four people on the ground were holding a sheet under the animal when the dog suddenly fell. it landed on the blanket and appears to be okay. >> whew. lucky day there. breaking overnight the manhunt for an escaped rapist in ohio has come to a violent end. authorities say brandon powell shot himself last night after being cornered in his parents' home near the indiana border. powell had been on the run since

friday. that's when he overpowered a sheriff's deputy while being transported from a psychiatric hospital. and what's being described as an around the clock manhunt is now under way in missouri. heavily armed police as you can see there have been going door to door outside of kansas city looking for ian mccarthy. he's charged with first degree murder of a rookie police officer. he opened fire during a traffic stop. authorities consider him to be armed and dangerous. we're just learning about a luxury round the world cruise that included preparations for a pirate attack. a freelance travel writer is telling the story of the "sea princess." the trip included a ten-day dusk to dawn blackout. no lights or loud music. the 1,900 passengers endured pirate drills warning that the risk of a pirate attack as they traveled from the indian ocean to the suez canal was real. luckily no pirates spotted. >> all righty. hackers going by the name of mr. smith have posted a fresh batch of stolen documents from hbo and are now demanding

several million dollars in ransom from the network. the documents appear to be scripts from "game of thrones," several episodes, and they've also shared sensitive internal documents including execive hbo says it's working with police and cybersecurity experts. google has fired an employee who wrote a controversial memo against diversity. james damore argued in that memo that the lack of women in tech jobs is due to biological differences as opposed to discrimination. the senior engineer accused the company of then silencing right wing opinions. google's ceo says damore crossed the line by advancing harmful gender stereotypes in the workplace. others suggest the company may have violated damore's freedom of speech. when we come back, one family's anger because of the death of their dog on board a united airlines flight. and some new health concerns from a former nfl quarterback. boomer esaison speaking out with another season about to get under way. on about to get under way. things are busy at mom, inc.

time for a loo time for a look at your morning road conditions. possible flooding is expected throughout the deep south and along the gulf coast down into florida and up into washington, d.c. roads will also be wet over the rockies and into parts of the midwest. if you're flying, airport delays possible in houston and atlanta. speaking of houston, a houston family is now blaming united airlines for their dog's death. the family says when their flight arrived in san francisco, lulu was dead. >> it's not the first time the airline has come under fire for its treatment of a pet. abc's jim avila with the details. >> reporter: lulu was part of the family, 5 years old, a cavalier king charles spaniel saying their owners signed off on her loaded into a flight that was delayed on the ground in houston for two hours and according to lulu's family

facebook post, when we went to pick her up, she was dead. from 2014 to 2016, of the 26 pet deaths during transport, united had nine, more than any other u.s. carrier. the airline says in a statement, they are so sorry to learn of lulu's passing. they've offered condolences and assistance to the family and promise a thorough review of the incident. jim avila, abc news, los angeles. >> we should note the humane society does warn that cargo hold travel should always be a last resort and some dogs should not fly. a third y scout has died after a tragic sailing accident in east texas. 11-year-old thomas larry was unresponsive after a catamaran carrying three scouts collided with a live power line and caught fire. thomas was riding with two older eagle scouts ages 17 and 16. both died at the scene. the cause of the accident is under investigation. and day two of jury selection gets underway in denver later in morning in taylor swift's sexual assault

case against a former radio deejay. swift accuses david mueller of groping her during a preconcert publicity shoot. mueller is countersuing swift for getting him fired from his job and blackballed from the industry, he says. no jurors seated. two prospects have been eliminated. a former star nfl quarterback makes a shocking admission saying he may have a degenerative brain disease. boomer esiason believes his 14-year career likely left him with cte. he says all football players probably have it but, quote, we don't know all the answers. esaison was discussing the research showing 99% of players' brains examined after their deaths revealed signs of the disease. a pair of backpackers came frighteningly close to nature in california. they found themselves in a staredown with a mountain lion and they froze and luckily for them the cougar did as well. that gave the hikers time to figure out what to do next. >> what are we supposed to do? >> i don't know.

woohoo! you'll ask, what pain? new advil liqui-gels minis. now from abc 7, live, breaking news. >> news coming to us from the south bay, police investigate ailing shooting that killed a man in east san hoe skbla in happened overnight at a shopping center. matt keller is there. matt. >> reporter: good morning, that tarka and reg kbi. this is a homicide investigation. this shooting took place at this strip maul it's jim's luor mart. folks are focing around there if the happened around 11:00 last night. this is video from earlier, officers checking around the scene looking in nearby vehicles. surveillance video could be a key part especially where this happened in a strip mall where businesses have some sort of cameras and asked an officer if they knew who the victim was. she said they weren't sure if it was a customer or an employee.
