right now. the owner, well known and well-liked in this neighborhood would normally be working, but last night a robber ended his life. the 911 call came in at so:52 from jim's liquor mart on south white and quimby roads in san jose, a man shot and killed inside. >> my son woke me up at midnight and said my brother been shot. >> reporter: ly arrived at the scene with several other family members. this is 57 hugh ly, better known as charlie ly, a husband and foreof four sons, a long time san jose resident and today he's also san jose's most recent homicide victim. charlie and his wife were working the store together last night and his brother talked with us about what happened. >> my brother felt tired and laid on the floor inside the counter, and his wife stand there and the guy come over, put

the mask on and asked for her to open the cash. >> reporter: charlie has owned jim's liquor mart and has been known for long hours. he's been robbed before. last night the armed masked man pulled the trigger. >> he stand up and said no and the guy shot him in the chest. >> reporter: hou ly held charlie and called 911. the robber threatened to shoot her but didn't. >> took the phone away and he tried to open the -- the cashier, and then he left. >> reporter: he didn't get any money? >> no. >> reporter: the robber escaped before police arrived and surveillance cameras could help police in their murder investigation. >> i don't know what to say, you know. i hope the police can get that guy, put him in jail forever. >> reporter: this is the 17th homicide of the year here in san jose. according to our media partner

"the mercury news" there were 30 homicides by this time last year. reporting live in san jose, matt keller, abc 7 news. >> matt, thank you. new this morning, san francisco police and federal agents conducted a raid at the city's largest public housing development. abc 7 news was on sunnyvale avenue after police and agent converged in the area. federal officials do not plan to release any details about the raids. they say the raids are part of an ongoing investigation. sky 7 was over hayward after a passenger van slammed into an auto body shop at mission boulevard and grove way just before 8:00 this morning. alameda county firefighters tell us one person suffered minor injuries. nobody was inside the building at the time of the crash. this morning's impact also damaged a car that was parked inside the body shop. highway patrol officers are trying to find out what went wrong. the fbi is offering a $3,000 reward for information leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of a bank robbery

suspect. authorities are calling him the smiling face bandit, unusual, yes, because he's seen grinning in multiple surveillance photos. the man is suspected in six separate robberies at wells fargo branches in san francisco between may 20th and this past saturday. we're tracking developing news out of the east bay. oakland fire investigators are trying to figure out what sparked this huge fire. it tore through a two-story home on 57th avenue in the seminary neighborhood shortly before 11:00 last night. firefighters closed off the street as they kept the flames from spreading to nearby homes. a power line fell which made a dangerous for crews. no word on any injuries or how much damage it caused. vacation shot after the company fired an employee for penning an

anti-diversity memo. the former employee says he'll likely take legal action against google. the article argued that women do not have the biological makeup to succeed in silicon valley. many in the area found the memo contrary. >> goes contrary to what makes a society innovative and great and productive and equal and interesting and exciting for everybody. >> i think just supporting women that do work in tech and companies like google standing up and saying that's not appropriate comments to make is important. >> reporter: he told his employees while freedom of expression is important, the former employee violated company policy. >> travis kalanick will not be returning to the company. uber's chairman made the announcement to staff yesterday in an e-mail. now, speculation is rising that kalanick may try to find a

different position with the san francisco-based ride-hailing company. he resigned as ceo back in june after months of crisis, including uber's alleged mishandling of sexual harassment. no word yet on who could replace kalanick as ceo. new details this morning about uc berkeley's former chancellor who will still receive his executive salary even after resigning this summer. nicholas dirks will get almost all of his executive salary of $440,000 for another year even though he won't teach or run campus programs. he's being paid under a policy that rewards executives who are also tenured professors and will return to the classroom. dirks won't teach until next year when he'll earn a salary of almost $200,000 less. new this morning, house democrats want to know how much the federal government is spending at properties owned by president trump. the request comes as the president spends much of his

working vacation at his golf club in new jersey. democrats on the house oversight committee are asking u.s. agencies and departments to hand over information about their trump-related spending by august 25th. the president hasn't shied away from his homes away from the white house. he's visited his own properties 48 times since his inauguration according to an associated press tally. developing news now in china where an earthquake has killed five people and left at least 63 others hurt, and the numbers could go up. the magnitude 6.5 quake struck in the southwestern part of the country about 175 chendu. no update has been given on how many homes or buildings were damaged. pg&e is conducting a massive drill that will help employees

responding to an 8.0 earthquake. abc 7 news reporter tiffany wilson is live at the utilities headquarters in san francisco. now, tiffany, some members of the community are also invited, right? >> yes, absolutely, kristen. if you're walking down beal street you can check out the real shaker hand like in the real world you don't know when a disaster will hit. the same things happens here and they want you to remember to drop, cover and hold. dean reese is the man behind the big shaker. >> it's the world's largest mobile earthquake simulator. we're here today to try to get the people of san francisco to think about if there were a major earthquake, are they going to be prepared? >> reporter: and he says the public can learn that lesson from just a few seconds inside. >> we want them to think about securing all of their furniture in their homes so it doesn't fall on their children. we want them to think about do i have a kit? >> reporter: how does this work, just from the standpoint of making something shake, rattle and roll? >> we'll have to show you. >> reporter: and show me he did. a 6.5 magnitude earthquake hit

western china earlier today, and that is the intensity of the big shaker right now. oh, my gosh. wow. you definitely need to hold on. the big shaker is only part of the pg&e emergency drills taking place companywide today. >> the big one is inevitable, so what we do, we annually practice an earthquake drill in addition to some other drills that we do during the year. it really helps improve our coordination. >> reporter: and it improves company communication. this as the emergency operation center where pg&e crews are working through the response to a simulated 7.9 earthquake that struck the bay area earlier this morning. they will be working through this disaster scenario all day. i am still a little rattled from that. that was about an 8.0 simulation, and i did not expect in a aftershock. but pg&e says that this is not just about them preparing. it is also about you preparing, and so for more on what you should do to prepare for an

dropping down to 58. san jose, still hazy sunshine out there, and as we look at our 12-hour day planner, 62 to 75 at noon. not much of a spread. start to jump to 84 inland by 4:00 and down to 71 by 8:00 and 64 at midnight. good sleeping weather for all of us. around the bay at 4:00, 67 down to 6 is and upper 50s and low 60s at the coast. drizzle once again, 56 to 62 is our spread. a look at franklin as it moves across the yucatan peninsula and falling apart. the tropical storm right now up to 12 inches of rain possible. it exits there and it heads over towards the western coast and the eastern coast of mexico where a hurricane watch is in effect because the winds could get up a little bit faster and that's at least thursday into friday. back here at home, look at this. we're pretty locked in. morning clouds. afternoon sunshine. may see a little more fog as we head towards thursday, friday and saturday and the temperatures could dip down into the 60s and 80s for highs by monday. kristen. >> thanks, mike.
