missiles. that extraordinary step in response to a statement from president trump. his confidence nott iechoed by guam resident. >> north korea best not make any more threats to the united states. they will be met with fire and fury like the world has never seen. >> i still don't think we stand a chance. i mean, they could launch a missile at us and it could wipe us out. am i scared? no, i mean, i lived a good life. but it's whatever. >> guam is home to an american air force base and a naval base. officials say they are praying the u.s. presence will keep the island safe. >> a foreboding illustration of the rising kengzs between the u.s. and north korea is captured on this latest cover of "the economist." the title, it could happen. images of both leaders are shaped from the mushroom cloud of a nuclear weapon. that magazine was out before the

situation escalated yesterday. amid the growing tension between the u.s. and north korea, activists are planning a protest to mark the 72nd anniversary of the u.s. atomic bombing of n nagasa nagasaki. they held a moment of silence this morning at a ceremony. 70,000 people were killed in nagasaki on this day in 1945. three days after an atomic bomb was dropped in hiroshima. japan's prime minister spoke at the ceremony, reiterating his determioatino tne f weapons. today's protest at lawrence livermore lab also calls for the elimination of nuclear weapons. that begins at 8:00 a.m. >> in the south bay, verges are trying to figure out why a crane collapsed, crashing right into a house. >> work went into the night to try to bring power back to the neighborhood. abc7 news reporter matt keller is live for us in campbell. matt. >> reporter: since i last saw you, most of that heavy equipment has been brought out of this neighborhood. that happened within the past hour. and i'm standing where this crane fell yesterday. you can see the sand here in the

middle of the road where it socked up a lot of that fluid that was leaking from the crane. that crane fell into the homes behind it. i was told that it was as tall as these palm trees here, almost 200 feet high. here's new video from just the past hour, though. the crane brought in to help upright the fallen crane left the neighborhood. they were able to get the fallen crane out around 2:30 this morning. then it took a few hours to get all their equipment out. and here's a look at video from sky 7 of the crane yesterday. the large piece of equipment fell just before noon. crane clipped two backyard sheds before crashing onto the roof of a house on shcharmaine drive. >> it wasn't much of a crash. it was just a loud boom and kind of a thump. and i was mowing the lawn. i heard and felt it, so that's pretty drastic. >> a subcontractor for pg&e had been working to remove a power pole from the backyard of a house on saunder way, and it's still unclear why the crane fell.

no one was hurt. this neighborhood is currently on generator power. you can see the generator there. pg&e will be back out here today to get the customers back online so they can remove this generator from the neighborhood. reporting live in campbell, matt keller. >> thank you. >> in the east bay, police are asking for your help identifying an armed robbery suspect. oakland police released these surveillance photos hoping someone will recognize this man. he's accused of robbing a business on international boulevard near 27th street. police say the man pointed a gun at a worker, demanded cash, and took off. there's a $2500 reward for any information leading to his arrest. >> new developments, police have arrested a murder suspect wanted for a shooting in belmont. officers took the 27-year-old into custody at the union city b.a.r.t. station just before 12:25 this morning. stewart is accused of killing 24-year-old dijon jones early sturday morning alt an apartment complex on rolston avenue. investigators say the gun believed to be a semiautomatic

handgun has not been recovered. >> new details in the kate steinle murder case. the suspect is going to be known under a different name in his trial. the attorney said the court will now refer to him as jose inez garcia zarate. that name is listed on his birth certificate and has been used in prior federal cases. the public defender's office says immigrants often use different names. garcia zarate is accused of killing steinle on pier 14 in 2015. jury selection set to begin august 21st. >> this morning we're hearing from a woman desperate to recover precious memories of her terminally ill father. in june, a thief smashed the window of her car. he got away with a bag of her laptops. they include hours of footage of her father, images captured over the last five years.

damage, i mean, extensive from franklin, as it almost becomes a hurricane before it hits the eastern coast of mexico tomorrow morning. alexis. i did flip our emeryville camera around and pointed it towards the bay bridge toll plaza. we still aren't seeing flashing lights. we did have what sounds like a minor crash just before you get to the toll booths. we don't have any injuries. it could be clearing or already clear at this point. chp is on the way to the scene. as soon as i have an update, i'll pass it along. in the meantime, check out our traffic map. a lot of green so far this morning. i wanted to show you the maze leading into the toll plaza. really not bad. you don't get slow until you hit about west grand. not much of a backup, if there is anything there. definitely will keep tabs on that. we do have heavy traffic on westbound 4 between pittsburg and antioch. we'll check on that next. >> thanks. take a look at this dramatic high-speed chase that plays out on the streets of alba kirby, new mexico. it started yesterday when police

spotted a stolen white truck. behind the wheel, a 16-year-old boy. officers tried to pull him over. he took off speeding down streets. the officer barely misses a pedestrian. in the end, the teen crashed and tried to make a run for it. that's when police caught him, and thankfully, nobody got hurt. >> moments ago, there was an about face in court involving tiger woods. we're going to tell you the new developments just in to our newsroom. >> plus, do you think this california police officer is using excessive force? why one eyewitness believes the suspect got exactly what he deserved. >> we leave you with abc7 news now, a live look at weather and now, a live look at weather and traffic

welcome back, everyone. that breaking news this morning, we've just learned moments ago that golfer tiger woods will enter a first time dui offender program in palm beach county, florida. after his arrest this past may near his home, that's according to our abc station in palm beach. tiger's attorney entered a not guilty plea this morning at the palm beach gardens courthouse. the golfer was not there. his next hearing is set for october 25th. that's likely the first time we'll see him in court for this particular case. under the first-time dui program, woods would have to enter a guilty plea to a lesser charge of reckless driving. he'll also likely get a year

probation, pay some fines and also have to do a lot of community service. in the may incident, tiger was found unconscious in his car about 15 miles away from his home in jupiter. that latest breaking news coming in now. >> thank you. police have identified a woman they say pulled a trigger in a deadly shooting on twin peaks. 20-year-old fantasy decor and 19-year-old lamont mims will be arraigned on murder charges on friday. they're accused of killing a 71-year-old film scout. the victim's family gathered yesterday during a hearing. decor was not there because she's in the hospital for an undisclosed reason. prosecutors say decor pulled the trigger with mims helping during a robbery attempt. >> very loving and very caring. it's very sad that someone took him off this earth. >> the family is upset because mims was arrested for a gun charge just days before the shooting. a judge had ordered his release

on the recommendation of a pretrial diversion program. >> the mayor who helped lead san bruno after the gas explosion is stepping down. he announced he will not seek re-election this fall. he's been a member of city council since 1995. he became mayor in 2009, one year before the explosion killed eight people and destroyed dozens of home. he told the san mateo daily journal he plans to pick up more work as a plastering contractor. >> a 49ers linebacker is recovering after being knocked temporarily unconscious during training camp. the undrafted rookie donovan newsom only sustained a concussion. the team initially feared he had sustained a neck injury and spinal cord damage. an exam showed he did not sustain any cervical spine fractures. he was down on the field motionless for 15 minutes after the violent collision with a teammate. a new ucsf study finds pregnant women who suffer from

sleep disorders may be at greater risk of delivering their babies before reaching full term. what's surprising is how few women are actually diagnosed. they say treating sleep disorders during pregnancy could be a way to reduce the preterm rate. it's about 10% in the u.s. the study points to the need for better diagnosis and treatment of those conditions. chip technology is supposed to make our credit card transactions more secure, but sometimes that chip can fall out of your card. and if you lose the chip, call the bank for a new card with a new number. most stores will still let you use the credit card by swiping the magnetic stripe. officials at chase bank say someone could find the chip on the ground and use it on a different card. more on how to keep your card secure is coming up. i never thought of that as a possibility. >> never occurred to me, mike. >> scary. no doubt about it. just put it on another card and

creek, check out that fog, mist, drizzle. likely going to have the flip the wipers on in several areas. and so far, that walnut creek commute not looking too bad. just stop and go traffic in the usual places. mass transit, we have not had issues so far, but a quick mention, we have the a's and giants at home for a day game. that will impact mass transit, especially for the giants day game. if you ride the larkspur ferry in to san francisco at 11:10 or 11:40, you'll have a lot of company. get there early. if you take the san francisco bay ferry back to vallejo in the afternoon, we could have capacity issues. thal will have buses on standby just in case. we'll look at drive times at 6:30. >> yuba city police say they're still gathering effects over what appears to be a disturbing incident caught on cell phone. an officer seen punching a man who appears to be calmly submitting to being arrested. however, one eye witness said the suspect punched the officer first withou being provoked. this happened monday. the suspect was on probation,

12 more days until the solar eclipse. google wants to make sure kids are prepared to watch with a pair of glassess. they have promised to ship more than 2 million of them to public libraries across the country. it's also working with a science education company to provide 15,000 straight to schools. on monday, august 21st, a total eclipse will be visible. here in the bay area, we'll see about 75% of the sun covered by the moon. >> our friends say during an eclipse. even small changes will help offset the loss of solar power. so for example, you could power down things that are plugged in during the eclipse and they say that will make a difference.

attack. officials in guam, home to an american navy base and air force base, are assuring residents they are safe. this heated rhetoric and north korea's missile testing has people in the bay area thinking now about the unthinkable. >> emergency managers are discussing how they would handle the threat of a nuclear attack. abc7 news reporter tiffany wilson live with san francisco's preparations. tiffany. >> reporter: good morning, natasha and reggie. first of all, officials say that the likelihood of north korea being able to target san francisco with a nuclear warhead is still very low. that is because they have never tested an intercontinental ballistic missile with the weight of a nuclear warhead. however, if there was a nuclear attack, san francisco officials would turn to the city's emergency response plan. it's a blueprint to manage all types of disasters and includes guidance for health, law enforcement, and firefighting. the department of emergency management says another aspect of the plan is public education.

a house on charmaine drive. no word on what caused that crane to fall. reporting live in campbell, matt keller, abc7 news. >> thank you. if you're heading out to b.a.r.t. this morning, trains are running as normal. last night, though, equipment issues caused big problems. dozens of passengers were stuck waiting for the train around 11:00. b.a.r.t. said there was a 20-minute delay at the powell street station. the san francisco fire department responded to reports of smoke there. the equipment problem affected trains headingyro fm point, sfo daly city. >> on to developing news. southwest airlines saying everything is back to normal this morning after a computer glitch caused some delays last night. a live look at sfo right now, officials say they experienced an issue with the system that delivers data to planes which prevented flights from leaving. it affected 120 flights in all. all but seven took off. four in orange county where there's a curfew. the others had crew rest

legality issues. >> new developments in an effort to build affordable housing for teachers in san jose. early this morning, the san jose city council voted against the plan. the mercury news reports three councilmen opposed the proposal in the vote. a woman who owns a vacant commercial lot wanted to rezone it so she could build 14 affordable residential units for teaches. opponents including the mayor argued the commercial land should be used for businesses and rezoning it could be a slippery slope that leads to more rezoning. new details in the google diversity memrow controversy. the man who wrote the memo says he filed a complaint with the labor relations board before he got fired on monday. he says he waw subjected to coercive statements while at google. he argued women don't have the biological makeup to succeed in silicon valley. google says that violates the company's code of xuk. damore said it was illegal

retaliation against the labor complaint. google says it knows nothing about the complaint. damore is now considering legal action. google's ceo is going to address staff about the controversy in a town hall tomorrow. >> another warning to starbucks customers by alameda police after another robbery of a laptop. last weekend's theft was the third such grab and run at an alameda starbucks and the second at the park street location. this is video of the location of the last robbery less than two weeks ago at atlantic avenue and webster. all of the robberies have occurred inside of the stores. police now urging people to remain aware of their surroundings. >> not only did we have delays at sfo, pretty mild temperatures on the peninsula. we're about 59 to 61 until you get up around the coast. 55 in daly city. pacifica at about 56. san jose, san ramon, concord, antioch. 59 in livermore, santa rosa and

involving a delta plane in atlanta. it's hard to see the images, a little foggy or misty there, but you can see the flashing lights and make out the plane. we're getting records it had some kind of tire damage. i'm seeing some reports that the tires blew out on the runway. there have been no reports, though, of any injuries at this point. we did see people getting taken off the plane. there are a ton of emergency personnel there. the plane has been evacuated at this point. i'm deg to keep my eye on things just in case the plane was coming to the bay area. we don't know exactly where it was going. looks like the passengers, though, are back inside the airport, getting new flights now. so just delay for those folks. natasha. >> thank you for the update. if you're looking for work, caltrans might be looking for you. the state's highway department plans on hiring more than 1,100 people in california. caltrans has opening for jobs like highway maintenance workers along with positions like engineers and environmental planners. a wave of retirements is fueling the need for this hire. more construction is also

it is 6:44. a voter fraud commission established by president trump could make it easier for hackers to get voter registration information. this according to kentucky secretary of state who says keeping a list with information on voters nationwide is, quote,

>> take a look a this brazen robbery in new york city. you're going to watch a guy on a bike as he sneaked up on an unsuspected cabbie. he snatched a wad of cash. many of the bills dropped to the ground. this robbery took place in june. the bicycle bandit, as he's been dubbed, still on the lose. police say he's suspected in seven different robberies since june. this is a crazier crime. two armed robbers tried to hold up a store in arlington, texas. the owner and employee fought back, even with guns pointing to their face. the suspects decided it wasn't worth it and tried to take off. the store owner and worker tried their hardest to keep the suspects from running off. in the end, their attempt failed. those armed gunmen still on the loose. >> a pretty crazy story. a newlywed couple in new jersey looking for two people who crashed their wedding. not because they're mad. they just say they want to meet them. take a look at this photo. see the crashing couple in the
