in just a few hours good morning,le's ceo will host a town hall meeting expecting fireworks. the company is tackling gender and diversity issues head on after an engineer is fired over a controversial memo. thanks for joining us. i'm kristein sze. it all started with that memo that suggested biological differences are the reason fewer women pursue tech. the controversy is also front and center at a silicon valley education summit this morning. abc 7 news reporter matt keller is live at goggle headquarters in mountain vow. matt? >> reporter: kristen, the fired engineer is considering suing google and also filing an official complaint with the national labor relations board. all while the ceo is preparing to address the controversy. the man behind the memo that sparked outrage is not backing down about those controversial claims with gender diversity at

google. >> i'm not saying that any of the female engineers at google are in any way worse than the average male engineer. i'm just saying that this may explain some of the disparity in representation. >> reporter: speaking out in an google engineer, james damore, addressed his ten-page memo that he wrote after attending a diversity program. >> we should recognize that some women are different than men in these ways. >> reporter: in response to the controversy, sundar pichai is addressing diversity at a town hall meeting. women only represent 20% of google's technical staff. numbers like that are not uncommon at silicon valley companies. >> by supplementing at every step of the way. >> reporter: it's an issue being addressed at the 2017 silicon valley leadership group education summit being held at microsoft in mountianview. >> 40% of girls and up to 60% of

students of color by the fourth grade have already said i don't like science. i'm not good at science. i don't like math. i'm not good at math. >> reporter: eileen nash works with south san francisco school district and says controversy surrounding diversity in silicon valley like memo can prompt discussions but the real change comes through mentoring. >> it's about engaging all of our assets and dollars and our employees who serve as wonderful mentors, coaches and really providing a mirror to students to say, hey, you can do this as well. >> reporter: sources tell abc 7 news the town hall meeting is scheduled to start at 4:00 this afternoon. the media is not invited. reporting live in mountianview, matt keller, abc 7 news. >> matt, thank you. adding to google's issue a san francisco law firm is planning to sue the good night for gender pay bias. nearly 70 female google

employees have come forward. >> women have experienced sexual harassment. there have been comments about their looks. they have been shown cell phone images that they didn't want to see. they have been told that women can't perform engineering jobs. >> the labor department audited payroll records and found google systematically pays women less for comparable work. google says it disagrees with the government's conclusion and denies it has a gender pay gap. developing news on the peninsula. redwood city police are looking for a suspect after an 18-year-old man was show the during a fight. officers found the wounded man along hoover street near haven avenue just before it can this morning. that came moments after someone called 911 reporting a dispute which ended in gunfire. >> hearing gunfire in the neighborhood isn't unusual, but somebody being shot that close is, yeah. >> i don't know what the argument is about. i wouldn't be able to say much further at this point. >> the victim underwent surgery after being shot in the face and

leg. police say the shooter and the victim knew one another. new developments in the case of a man who was shot by hay-yard police over the weekend. prosecutors have fired several felony charges against martin harlan is accused of stealing a car saturday and smashing into several other cars. at one point he drove into other officers and that's when they opened fire. they also believe harlan is the one who shot at some of their officers in june. a ceremony got underway moments ago at the top of the hour. back on june 14th police say-ups driver jimmy lamb opened fire in portrero hill. wayne chan, michael lafitti and benz op louie were called. lamb killed himself when confronted by responding officers. the continued threat from north korea. the communist regime is doubling

down on threats to strike guam with ballistic missiles. >> reporter: the commander of north korea's army unleashing a specific threat of a plan to launch missiles by the u.s. territory of guam by mid-august. >> this missile they have been talking about is unreliable and never launched those in multiple so it could be a convenient excuse to test the missile program further. >> reporter: a defiant response to those explosive comments from president trump. >> north korea best not make any more threats to the united states. they will be met with fire and fury like the world has never seen. >> reporter: north korea calling them a load of nonsense saying the president is a guy bereft of reason and only absolute force can work on him. the governor of guam, a u.s. territory home to critical military bases and 160,000 americans, now calling for calm. >> there has been no change in

participation in technology for national defense. he's scheduled to meet with defense innovation unit experimental staff and talk with leaders in the tech community. this will be his first official visit to silicon valley as defense secretary. happening now. caltrain wants you to weigh in on the design for bike storage on its new electric trains of the future. the options on display right now at san francisco's fourth and sing station are getting mixed reviews. abc 1 news reporter tiffany wilson is there live to show us. tiffany? >> reporter: hi, kristen, the public's feedback on the new bike storage designs is very critical to caltrain. just like the other two public polls for the new fleets, color and layout, the most popular design will be the one that caltrain goes with. >> all aboard. >> reporter: bike capacity is at a premium on caltrain. >> get very full very quickly. >> reporter: boyakers say the current stacking system can lead to conflicts commutes.

>> it's awful trying to find out who is going where and make sure you don't put your bike on somebody else's who needs to get off before you do. >> reporter: caltrain plans to increase bike storage on the new trains. >> we'll have increased capacity over the system because we'll be running more trains. >> reporter: the caltrain spokesperson said they made a commitment for one bike for every eight seats and they have come up with two options for people to vote on. >> the options are capacity which is option one and option two is this potential to be able to get your bike in and out without considering where people are going. >> reporter: today commuters like alex izer can test out the prototypes at the fourth and king station. >> the middle one is the best so far. >> reporter: there won't be passenger seats in the new bike cars. instead, ten surveillance cameras are supposed to discourage thefts. >> i'm not so worried about someone stealing my bicycle. >> the camera does not help you get at boyak back so unless the caltrain is going to cover the cost of replacing the bike, it's not a good design.

new developments in the taylor swift trial. the pop star is on the stand this morning testifying against the man accused of groping her. swift tells the jury, quote, it was a definite grab, a very long grab, unquote these are sketches from inside the denver courtroom. the 27-year-old star spoke as part of the ongoing civil trial between her and former radio deejay david mueller. he denies inappropriately touching swift at a meet and greet four years ago.

mueller countersuing swift saying the allegation is false and cost him his career in radio. now to consumer advice on how to pick the best credit cards for you. a new study examines which cards have the fewest fees. jess ask a castro from abc 7 mornings is here with advice on how to save money. jessia? >> hi, kristen. credcards.com crunched the numbers and looked at 100 popular cards. they say on average cards charge six potential fees, but watch out because some cards may charge up to 12 so you really want to know your charges. some of the most popular fees are on cash advances, overlimits and annual memberships. the most often overlooked fee is the balance transfer fee. topping the list of card with the fewest fees, pentagon federal credit unions promise visa which only carries one fee. capital one platinum and spark classic from capital one and sam's club master card also had some of the least number of fees. but just because the fees exist doesn't necessarily mean you have to pay them.
