good morning, everyone. i am carolyn tyler. thank you for joining us on this sunday, august 13th. let's start with a quick look at the weather with our meteorologist. >> i want to show you the low clouds and fog. live doppler 7 and the satellite image. you notice it's spilled into the bay. things will clear up once again. right now temperatures are in the 50s and in the 60s in san francisco, 55, san jose, 58. brentwood, already at 62. here is what you can expect for the day with our 12-hour planner. fog and low clouds during the next few hours with temps mainly in the 50s and 60s.

this afternoon it will be mild, slightly cooler in some locations. inland areas reaching the upper 80s around the bay, comfortable in the mid 70s and at the coast it will stay in the 60s. now, there is a big cool-down coming our way. i will tell you more about that. we are following the latest developments in charlottesville, virginia. this morning investigators have identified the man charged with plowing into a crowd of demonstrators, killing at least one person, injuring 19 others. it happened after violent clashes between white nationalists and counterprotesters. abc news reporter meghan hughes joins us live from charlottesville. good morning. >> good morning. it is calm in charlottesville this morning. i am standing in the location where that car plowed into the crowd, and you can see behind me a subtle memorial. there are flowers, candles.

there is a card about love. this, the only indication that this was the scene of a rampage. overnight the charlottesville community holding a vigil for healing. this after a day of panic and chaos in the streets. a car plowing through a crowd of counter protesters. killing one 32-year-old woman and sending 19 people to the hospital. >> hit two or three people. >> reporter: the driver identified as a 20-year-old white male from maumee, ohio. it capped off a weekend of height and violence with white nationalists swinging torches friday. violence escalating saturday as the white supremacists and counterprotesters clashed. lieutenant h.j. cullen and pilot m.m. bates died in a helicopter crash as they were assisting public safety. foul play is not suspected.

president trump speaking to the nation, denouncing the violence but not the white supremacists specifically. >> we condemn in the strongest possible terms this egregious display of hatred, bigotry and violence, on many sides. >> reporter: the governor of the state of virginia said he did have a message. >> i have a message to all the white supremacists and nazis who came into charlottesville. go home. >> reporter: the man arrested, james alex fields, jr., has a bond hearing set for monday. his mother telling the "associated press" she thought her son was going to a donald trump rally. in charlottesville, virginia. meghan hughes, abc7 news. we're learning more about the ohio man. 20-year-old james alex fields jr. has been charged with second degree murder. malicious wounding and hit and run. he has a bond hearing scheduled

for tomorrow. his mother says he was taking time off work to go to the rally to support president trump. she says she told him to be careful and to be peaceful. the woman who died has been identified as 32-year-old heather higher, the black student union at the university of virginia tweeted her photo saying they will never stop fighting for her. she is a virginia native. a candle-light vigil is planned in her memory tonight in charlottesville. nancy pelosi issued a statement condemning the violence and criticizing president trump, saying, quote, the president's talk of violence on many sides ignores the shameful reality of white supremacist. here in the bay area protesters held demonstrations to remember the victims killed and injured in virginia and to protest the

white house response. abc7 news reporter elissa harrington has the story from union square. >> reporter: candles light up san francisco's union square for a silent protest. demonstrators covered their mouths with tape, an act to symbolize the moment when president donald trump ignored a reporter who asked if he wants support from white nationalists like the group in charlottesville. a much louder protest echoed through the streets of oakland. >> no hate. no hate. >> we've got to call out the hatred and the bigotry and say no, this is not who we are. >> reporter: anne daniels made her own sign, a play off these images of torch-bearing white nationalists marching through the university of virginia. >> this is the statue of liberty. it says "this is my torch." i believe in liberty and equality for everybody. >> this has taken america back to its dog days.

>> head of san francisco's naacp places blame squarely on the shoulders of the president who he says has created and encouraged this type of climate. >> that has sent a signal to these conservatives, these racists, alt-right people too, to feel that it's open season to pick on minorities and marginalized people. >> you cannot put this at the president's doorstep. >> an outspoken trump supporter calls the weekend's violence horrible but argues white nationalist groups have been around for decades and in this case all sides need to take responsibility for their own actions. >> we just have to stop this fighting and protesting and screaming and go home, hug our families, and look for a way to unite our country. >> reporter: elissa harrington. abc7 news. more vigils for charlottesville are happening today. here are just a few of the events in the bay area.

organizers are planning rallies in san jose, novato, santa cruz and castro valley. locations and times are on your encouraged to bring their own signs and flashlights to show solidarity. protesters attending last night's rally in oakland momentarily marched on interstate 580 near grand avenue. this is video taken by a reporter for uc berkeley's student newspape"the daily cow." protesters took over all lanes of traffic in the westbound direction around 9:30. some set off fireworks. police and highway patrol cleared the protesters in about 30 minutes. it's unclear whether any arrests were made. developing news out of union city. two families are homeless after a car crashed through a duplex this morning. the alameda county fire department says the crash happened around midnight feet away from station 32. first responders thought a

pickup truck on the lawn and a bmw in the home. police say the drivers were racing down the street moments before that crash. the drivers and a passenger ran from the scene. police do have one person in custody. fortunately, no one living at that duplex was hurt. marshawn lynch is already generating controversy in his first game as an oakland raider. while others stood during the national anthem. lynch was sitting on a cooler. the head coach said he told him he has always sat during the star spangled banner. the coach says it's a nonissue. he is in the first year of a wi the raiders. as you know, colin

sparked controversy over the same issue. a security mishap caused an evacuation and security sweep. passengers shared photos of the long lines at tsa checkpoints yesterday after officials decided everyone in terminal a needed to be rescreened. >> we were all about to board, and then they suddenly said, okay, we can't board anybody. and then a little bit later on, the whole terminal i think had to recheck, go back through tsa. >> the airport explained checked bags were inadvertently dropped off inside the terminal. they sometimes contain items banned from carry-ons like weapons or sharp objects. >> they had received a different level of screening. since they were brought into terminal a, which is considered a sterile area, we found it necessary -- we made the decision to rescreen everybody in terminal a. >> nothing dangerous, she says, nothing dangerous was found.

in the north bay, a known sex offender has just moved into rohnert park. daniel cilley is living with relatives after serving jail time in los angeles county for harassing a teenage girl. cilley was known as the "downtown l.a. predator" for videotaping women on the street without their permission and uploading the clips to youtube. >> feeling so good this morning. it doesn't matter that there are all these people scared and talking like -- saying bad things about me. >> he is an individual that is a high risk of reoffending, and so we wanted to make sure that the residents there knew that he was moving in. >> police say cilley must stay away from children, no photos or videos. officers will be watching and they are asking neighbors to do the same. now to the fire watch. at least three brush fires burned across the bay area yesterday, including a close call in south san jose. look just how close that

scorched earth is to homes. the seven-acre grass-fire burned near highway 101 and helliey avenue. flames were stopped by a fast response by firefighters. officials believe a passing car on the highway started the fire. firefighters are making good progress containing a grass fire that broke out near lake berryessa in napa county friday afternoon. the canyon fire has burned 114 it's 80% contained. one firefighter suffered minor injuries. no structures have been damaged. none are threatened at this time. the cause of the fire is under investigation. in morgan hill, a smokey grass fire that broke out yesterday is now 70% contained. it charred 100 acres near the intersection of hale and tilton avenues in santa clara county. the fire forced vta to suspend service on the 68 bus in the area.

fans are hoping the lineup will stay the same after a big let-down yesterday. a tribe called quest canceled friday, rescheduled late last night and then an alert went out saying the show would not go on. lisa has more from golden gate park. >> reporter: this alert flashed on outside lands screens just as a tribe called quest should have been taking the twin peaks they earlier canceled because of travel delays. >> it's a bummer. we thought we would get lucky and see them. i thought they were canceled again. >> it sucks. you know, we have been having fun all day. and not quite sure why they got canceled. >> reporter: organizers blamed further travel complications for the double cancelation. it's not clear if the group will esss the f altogethler. thtie sudden change in lineup didn't dampen too many spirits.

numbers were sold in california, texas, illinois and new york. no one had all six winning numbers to claim that $356 million prize. here are those numbers. 20, 24, 26, 35, 49, and the powerball number 19. wednesday's jackpot is now worthy at least $430 million. bi pns aftg, winning more than half a million dollars for matching five out of six numbers from friday night's mega millions jackpot. terry and jack bought the lucky ticket at lake vista liquors on lawrence expressway in sunnyvale. they found out they won after going back to the store yesterday morning to check their ticket. >> we were supposed to go on a walk, go paint and finish our job. i don't know. i think we might take the day off. >> job? what job now? terry and jack plan to buy a house, go on a vacation, a mega

millions ticket matching all six numbers was sold in illinois. hundreds of teachers came to pick up free school supplies in san francisco. abc7 news was at scrap, a creative reuse center in the bayview district for the first of ten giveaways during the school year. scrap rescues materials that were headed for the dump and makes them available to teachers at no cost. the event has provided teachers more than $200,000 worth of supplies in the st >> you don't have a lot of funds or equipment, and this is a great way to bring in natural and reused equipment and supplies for the kids. >> scrap says teachers in california spend about $650 a year on school supplies. abc7 news was in oakland where members of the morning star church came together to get children ready for the school

year. items were distributed at the west oakland church. volunteers say it's crucial for families in west oakland because many have a hard time being able to afford school supplies. ♪ ♪ abc7 news was in richmond where hundreds of people dressed as rosy the riveter and gathered to hold on to a hometown record. the event celebrates the contributions of women during world war ii by gathering the largest number of rosy lookalikes in the same room. the record was 2,229 set during last year's event. >> people flooded in from all over the bay area. we're trying to go a all right farther out and catch all the people interested in this event and the wonderful era of history. >> this year's estimated crowd, 1600. so they did not match last year's event but another rosy gathering takes place in october

in michigan to try to challenge the richmond record. good morning. i am abc7 news meteorologist frances dinglasan. starting off with low clouds and fog. live doppler 7. you can see it. it's spilled into the bay. it will pull back again this afternoon. i want to show you the wide picture and loop this over the last few hours. you see the trough. this will be moving in tomorrow bringing us much cooler numbers. and i will have those for you as well. for now, enjoy the pretty view as we look out towards the bay bridge and the ferry building. temperatures right around where they were yesterday at this time, in the 50s for the most part and some 60s. san francisco, 55. oakland, mountainview, san jose in the upper 50s. gilmore, 54. half moon bay, 57. from emeryville out west towards the bay bridge, you see the low. san francisco -- rather, santa rosa 53. napa, 52.

we have concord at 60 degrees right now. the view looking towards downtown san francisco area. gray describes, but we will get more sunshine. we're dealing with the fog around the coast and the bay this morning. we will see partial clearing at the coast once again. so similar to yesterday's conditions. and then tomorrow, much cooler. so definitely grab a jacket for that. here is how it plays out today. in the next few hours we will see clouds retreat from parts of the north bay and the coast. by noon, if you have lunchtime plans, mostly sunny for everyone, except at the coast, especially along the peninsula. look at tonight. you notice the areas that pop up with the green, that's the drizzle and clouds that will move in overnight and into tomorrow morning, making for a cooler start. and here is a look at the highs for today. so notice, numbers not too different from yesterday. 60s at the coast once again. san francisco,oaand, 71 degrees. san jose, 80 degrees.

and this time our warmest spots will be in the upper 80s. antioch at 86. fairfield, 88 degrees and lots of sunshine there. if you're reading to the coast, grab a jacket! it's going to be partly cloudy and pretty breezy. 10 t 20-mile-per-hour breezes with gusts up to 30, 35 miles per hour especially near san francisco. so heads up there. the santa cruz area looks nice and comfortable at about 73. if you are heading to outside lands, i would definitely grab a jacket. partly cloudy with that breeze, it will feel a little bit cooler than the low 60s. also, here is a look at the afternoon highs for monday. notice temperatures much cooler in the inland areas, only upper 70s to low 80s and around the bay even lots of 60s out there. so here is the accuweather 7-day forecast. enjoy the sunshine andhe t summer-type weather we have today. because things are going to be much cooler tomorrow. on monday we'll start the work

inland spots. san jose at 76. by 4:00 we'll see things warming up to the upper 80s in santa rosa, fairfield, antioch. at the coast it will be cloudy throughout the day. a cooldown is coming up. our top story this morning, a white nationalist rally in virginia ended with one person dead, another in jail. a driver plowed into a crowd of people protesting the rally in charlottesville, virginia. 20-year-old james alex fields jr. has been charged with second degree murder, malicious wounding and hit and run. the collision killed 32-year-old heather higher and injured 19 others. some critically. the mayor has condemned those responsible for the violence. >> they are going to be in the trash heap of history. this day will not define us. >> president trump weighed in on the rally from new jersey after appearing to blame both sides for the violence.

>> no matter our color, creed, religion or political party, we are all americans first. >> hours after the protest, two virginia state troopers died in a helicopter crash just outside charlottesville. the they were patrolling the rally earlier in the day. there is a wave of criticism following president trump's comments. it's what he did not say that has so many upset. democrats and republicans. david wright is traveling with the president in new jersey. >> we are closely following the terrible events unfolding in charlottesville, virginia. >> reporter: the president finally did say the hate and division in charlottesville has no place in america. >> we condemn in the possible terms this egregious display of hatred, bigotry and

violence, on many sides. on many sides. >> reporter: the president seemed to blame both the white nationalists and the counterprotesters equally. many of the white nationalists who organized the rally near a statue of confederate general robert e. lee voted for trump. among them. former klan leader david duke. as these horrific scenes of hatred and violence played outed, the first white house response came not from the president but from the first lady. our country encourages freedom of speech, she tweeted, but let's communicate without hate in our hearts. no good comes from violence. #charlottesville. presaited another 40 minutesenidtrt tumpo w weig. tweeting, we all must be united and condemn all that hate stands for. there is no place for this kind of violence in america. let's come together as one.

the president's response took fire from all sides. the mayor of charlottesville tweeted, thanks, at long last, for condemning hate in speech and action. our work here is just beginning. yours is too. republican senator cory gardner tweeted, mr. president, we must call evil by its name. these were white supremacists, and this was domestic terrorism. david duke, not happy either. he tweeted at trump, i would recommend you take a good look in the mirror and remember it was white americans who put you in the presidency, not radical leftists. >> and that was abc7 reporter david wright reporting. after the president's comments about virginia he signed an emergency spending bill to fund veteran's medical care. that bill will pump more than $2 billion into a program allowing veterans to receive private medical care at government expense. it addresses a budget shortfall

at the department of veterans affairs that threatened care for thousands of vets. president trump made improving veteran's care a central campaign promise. abc7 chief global affairs correspondent martha raddatz has a live report from the front lines of the north korea nuclear threat on this week with george stephanopoulos. it's scaramucci's first interview after his stint at the white house. it starts at 8:00 this morning after the weekend edition of "good morning america." one of four inmates who escaped from jail in mississippi early friday has been apprehended. a manhunt continues for three other escapees, including one man who is accused of rape and murder. the jail is located about 90 minutes south of memphis, tennessee. >> i am very scared.

i don't want to know just what's going to be -- what's going to be did about this here. >> a $1,000 reward is being offered for the capture of the escapees. the sheriff's department is not saying how the man escaped from custody. a houston police officer has just a split second to react when an accused drunk driver barrels towards him. his body camera is rolling. abc7 reporter janae norman picks it up from there. >> officer down. he jumped off the side of the freeway. >> reporter: the terrifying moments caught on tape. houston police officer making a split second decision to get out of the way of the oncoming car. >> i hear a screeching of tires. >> reporter: the officer was forced off the side of the highway by an alleged drunk driver. >> before i knew it, there was a car right up on me. i had less than a second to react to the situation. >> reporter: that decision,

captured on officer carter's body cam saved his life. watch again as officer carter finishes talking with a firefighter, immediately two other first responders turn to look and then carter is forced off the guardrail. >> i am falling. >> reporter: hitting the ground 16 feet below. >> i kept thinking to myself, when am i going to stop falling. >> reporter: officer carter left with multiple injury though grateful to be alive. >> if i would have stood still, the car would have ran me over and probably would have taken my life and i wouldn't be here today. >> reporter: houston police say the alleged drunk driver has been charged intoxication assault. she is due in court at the end of the month. janae norman. abc7, dallas. now to the two men who made a video of themselves climbing the golden gate bridge. chp is recommending that

18-year-old peter kure and thomas rector be charged with a misdemeanor for trespassing. they scaled the golden gate bridge in a recorded stunt that went viral. they are being sued by the golden gate bridge district for unspecified damages and legal costs. marin's marine mammal center says it is treating an alarming number of sea lions for acid poisoning. it's seen 68 this year compared with 70 for all last year. the poison is linked to toxic algae blooms. most of the animals are being rescued from the center coast. experts say the acid is creeping further up the coast. the sea lions are exposed to the nsxito when they eat food that contains the algae. the love of baseball knows no boundaries. the bay area little league kids

tomorrow will be below average by as much as 10 degrees in some cities. here is a look towards the bay bridge and some of the gray skies that will pull back to the coast this afternoon. san francisco is currently 55. oakland, 58. mountain view, 59. san jose, 58. more 50s in gilroy. half moon bay, 57. this is a shot from the east bay hills towards mount diablo. we'll get a lot of sunshine this afternoon, except at the coast. santa rosa and napa. 53 degrees. novato, 54. fairfield, 58. livermore, 57 degrees. right now, looking out towards downtown san francisco, the transamerica tower. it's covered, so we're dealing with the fog around the coast and the bay during the morning hours. only partial clearing at the coast, but we'll get a little bit more sunshine, especially along the north bay coast. then much cooler numbers tomorrow. so get ready for that. grab a jacket. you will probably need one if you are heading to the coast today as well. here is the forecast animation

with the clouds. you notice, 8:00 this morning, already clear along the north bay coast. here, still pretty cloudy along the peninsula coast and spilling into parts of the east bay. by lunchtime, everyone getting a lot of sunshine with the exception of south of san francisco down towards pescadero. you notice the pockets of light green that pop up. it looks like drizzle overnight into tomorrow morning. we'll see that. so you may need to use windshield wipers heading into work. highs today close to yesterday's numbers. 66 in san francisco. oakland, 71. and antioch, 86. fairfield, 88. then looks like we hit some of the low 90s up towards cloverdale and lake port. santa cruz should be a nice beach day at 73. if you're headed to the a's game. it should be comfortable and mild. temperatures hovering around the upper 60s throughout the game.am 4:00 this afternoon closer to the high of 70.
