okay. we have breaking news this morning in san leandro where the early morning commute is off to a rough start with a full closure of 880. >> this comes after a shooting this morning. amy hollyfield is live for us in san leandro. amy? >> reporter: natasha, the backup is bad. it's early in the morning but already it's at a crawl. i can only imagine what this is going to look like as the morning progresses.

they are barely moving down there. you're looking at southbound 880. we are in san leandro. these people probably very sorry that they didn't know about this and avoid this area. northbound still looks okay. looky loos are not slowing down the traffic, but southbound is what you want to avoid. look at the video of the scene. where this happened and why this is happening to these people. there was a shooting on southbound 880. the police got the call about 2:45 this morning that somebody had been shot in the head. they're still working on the investigation and that's why they have shut down all lanes. people are being diverted on to lewelling boulevard. they are not being allowed to drive on 880. you have to get off at lewelling boulevard and then go around and then they can be allowed back on once they pass this crime scene. at this point, the chp doesn't have an estimated time of when they'll clear this scene and reopen these lanes.

we are in a holding pattern right now. this an area you want to avoid. reporting live in san leandro, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. alexis, this is the potential to impact the morning commute. what are we seeing right now? >> yeah, well, it already is. you just saw in that shot from amy, boy, we have two miles of some really heavy traffic approaching that closure. this is a sig alert again southbound 880 at lewelling. you're forced off at lewelling and then you can get back on, it's a pretty short detour. you don't want to get caught up in the backup. you're down to six miles an hour approaching. state route 85, east 14th for an alternate that's pretty good and eastbound 580 an option as well. if you're closer to that, coming from the oakland area. we heard from chp about 15 minutes ago. they're permitting big rigs to use 580 for this ongoing investigation. as soon as that wraps they'll be forced back on 880. but let's check in with the

meteorologist mike nicco. i had to flip any wipers on a couple of times driving in. >> me too. driving through the east bay hills it was breezy this morning. i want to show you the san mateo bridge, and look at the gusty winds up to 23. and in fairfield -- there's a look at what's going on with your 12 hour day planner. temperatures in the upper 50s low 60s. 58 to 61 at 7:00. a lot of cloud cover, except for the inland neighborhoods at noon. partly cloudy this afternoon. 61 to 74 and then the clouds continue as we head to 7:00. but we've got 59 to about 65. notice the clouds will dominate more so then the sunshine and with that strong on shore breeze, temperatures 10 to 15 degrees cooler than average. all right, let's get to some more news.

5:03. and now to the deadly chaos in charlottesville, virginia. some new details about the suspect accused of plowing his car into the group of counterprotesters. >> his extremist views date back to high school. emily rowe has more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, reggie and natasha. the city of charlottesville is still under a state of emergency. this is the street where the car came barrelling down, mowing down a group of counterprotesters, hurt 19 people and killed a 32-year-old woman. you can see behind me where a memorial has been growing since. the alleged driver behind the wheel of this car mowing down a crowd of people protesting against a white nationalist rally now charged with murder. 20-year-old james fields drove from ohio to virginia for the rally, captured on video chanting a message of white supremacy. >> i thought it had something to do with trump.

trump's not a white supremacist. he had an african-american friend. >> reporter: fields' mother didn't know about her son's views but a former teacher claims they date back to his days in high school. >> he was into this whole idea that, you know, whites were a dominant race. >> reporter: but sunday night, solidarity against tho from charlottesville to dc and cities across the country, standing against hate. one counterprotester said he saw 32-year-old heather heyer die. >> i saw the life pass from her eyes and i watched her die. and from that moment on, i swore to myself i would not stop in the fight against white supremacy. >> reporter: and president trump facing backlash for his response. >> we're closely following the tirable events in charlottesville. >> reporter: the white house

clarified the president's statement using words he has yet to say in public. the statement reading in part, of course that includes white supremacists, kkk, neo-nazi and all extremist groups. you can see this memorial the message reads heather heyer, a hero. james field is charged with second degree murder in connection to her death and 19 others were injured. he is expected to appear in court today. okay, new at the live desk another update. only moments ago attorney general jeff sessions on "good morning america." he said that quote, the definition of domestic terrorism in our statute, attack meets those requirements and sessions said they're quoter pursuing it in the department of justice,

promising to advance the investigation and bring down the most serious charges possible. this is video from "good morning america." we'll have that interview for you coming up after our newscast. sessions said the attack was unacceptable, an evil attack that cannot be accepted in america. so some strong words from the ag this morning. as for president trump though, naming any white supremacist groups, sessions said thinks he l.ilsoprobably rise up for charlottesville! rise up for charlottesville! >> you're looking at video from san francisco as hundreds of people marched through the streets in solidarity with charlottesville. many waved flags and held signs denouncing racism. several people used flashlights and candles to light up civic center plaza. it starred with an organizer criticizing the american civil liberties union because it said

that the white supremacists should have their say. well, protesters at latham called for peace and unity. the rally was organized by our family coalition in hip-hop caucus. their facebook announcement invited people to the family friendly vigil and asked them to bring poems on peaceful transitions and overcoming white supremacy. >> the police are happy with the marches in the wake of charlottesville. 450 marches last night, no arrest, no citations, no injuries. the tweet was referring to saturday's large march. we are tracking developing news out of the south bay, reports of up to six people hurt in a shooting overnight in san jose. this is on vista glenn drive near hill view park. a number of people were on stretchers being wheeled away. no word on their condition. one neighbor said that people were gathering for a vigil when they heard gunshots around 10:30 last night. we'll bring you more information

as soon as we get it. activists are accusing a police station of colluding with the agents. it accusing them of cooperating with the i.c.e. agents in the detention of undocumented immigrants. in a statement on the website the sheriff's office says it does not arrest people on immigration status. nor do they participate in immigration raids or carry out deportations. happening today heads up if you plan to be in berkeley. thousands of incoming freshmen will be moving into the residentials halls. they're expecting 70,000 students to be moving in today. cal requires them to attend a week long golden bear orientation so they need to be on campus by the end of today. they'll continue to move in until sunday. now your accuweather forecast by mike nicco. >> exciting time in their life. talking about the temperatures about 55 in daly city. and on the peninsula side we're

93 in fresno. its looks like about 74 in tahoe today. breezy conditions if you're going to be up in the mountains. only 80 in sacramento. all right, let's get a check of the morning commute. ⌞> good got in san leandro. the investigation continue, we had a shooting on 880 and that means a full closure at the southbound side at lewelling. everybody is forced off at lewelling. that backup made it to state route 112. right around three miles, the alternates are looking pretty good. east 14th is wide open and eastbound 580. if you want to take that into the castro area valley and the big rigs can use 580 while that investigation is ongoing. northbound, we had a closure at curtner, again, due to more police activity and this cleared half an hour ago. and here's the golden gate bridge, not too foggy here, but

5:14 now. the attorney for the 18-year-old woman accused of driving drunk and live streaming a fatal crash said worn tires may be to blame. it led to the blowout which caused the crash that left hez' nc las month. the prosecutors say sanchez was intoxicated and drove distracted. she was live streaming on her phone during the crash. she is charged with six felonies. in today's "gma" first look, the nfl has suspended cowboys running back ezekiel elliott. >> reporter: in this morning's first look, dallas cowboys superstar running back zeke elliott is appealing a six game suspension. it resulted from the year long igstvenioat allegations from els then girlfriend tiffany thompson that he had been abusive.

player will never forget. the new coach brought a special guest to a team meeting last week, a patient at um's children hospital. the patient said his give favorite player is a walk-on third string kicker who has never played a single down. the coach praised justin for never giving up on football and for visiting kids at the hospital so they surprised him with a t-shirt. it last a special message. he was awarded a full scholarship and he brought the shirt with him when he appeared on "sportscenter.." >> i'm holding on to this for a while. once i read that, everyone jumped on me and it went nuts after that. >> everything about this is is adorable. the coach said he wanted to reward justin for representing the team's values. now a live desk update. >> from abc 7 mornings. >> boy, that was a great feel good story. right into the live desk only moments ago, video you really have to see of lady gaga, look at this, taking time to hand out

money to the homeless in san francisco. this was right after her last night. as you may know, she performed at at&t park, a lot of people went to it. she appears quickly in the video but she's the one with the high heeled white boots on. this video was posted on video by dina ga-ga 16. she has body guards to make she's safe. unclear what streets she was in, but we're assuming somewhat near the ballpark. of course that's where she was performing last night. the whole team is working on getting some more information about what led up to this. it's nice to see an artist like that give back. she could be doing so many other things with her time after her concert. >> i was going to say you're exhausted after putting out that much energy but totally in line much energy but totally in line with who we >> shotout to dino for shooting

hall, mirrored by rallies in oakland and san jose. firefighters are putting out hot spots in napa county. the cannian fire burned 114 acres. it's 90% contained. number six, we have mist and drizzle this morning, this same air mass is going to yield temperatures possibly up to 13 degrees cooler than average. as our break from summer continues. number seven, shonda rhimes moving her production company netflix. she is known for gray's anatomy and scandal. all of her shows will continue to air here on abc 7. an after school program in oakland encourages children to stay active. this five week program is held at the joaquin middle and elementary school. they can race for trophies, over a hundred kids participated last year. registration is still open if you're interested. 90 minutes of news still ahead, including wreckage following a possible street race

now from abc 7, live bracking news. >> from san leandro where all the lanes of southbound still shut down after the shooting. >> and amy hollyfield is trying to get close thor the scene. good morning, amy. >> reporter: hi, good morning, natasha. we wanted to drive right on through this so you could get a glimpse of what it's like. it's pretty painful. 11 minutes we have been on southbound 880. we haven't gotten from the on ramp to the next exit. it's barely moving out here. i highly suggest you skip this area. here's video of the crime scene where investigators are doing these lanes of y theve ohay

traffic. and at 2:45 this morning the chp got a call that a shooting happened on the freeway, a man had been shot in the head and they're investigating. they said they'll be for a while. so all lanes shut down. they're diverting people off at lewelling so lewelling boulevard is where you have to exit, get off the freeway and then get back on once you pass the crime scene area. northbound, it looks okay. people aren't slowing down the look. so traffic is moving northbound. it's southbound you want to avoid. this is right here in san leandro. we got on it at marina. this is what we're stuck in. lieu welling is where -- lewelling is where the traffic has to exit. >> thank you. this looks pretty miserable. >> it does. amy giving us the real life version of what it looks like. n the traffic maps too. we'll zoom into the traffic

alert, it's a sig alert according to chp. a lot of folks are waking up, trying to get their workweek going. full closure at lewelling. that's where you're forced off for the detour. zooming out a bit here, you can see that backup continues to grow. we're up to about four miles now at this point. this is only going to get worse as we continue to see all of these lanes closed. state route 185, east 14th, decent alternate. if you want to take some surface streets there. eastbound 508 is what i recommend. they're permitting big rigs to use 580. due to all lanes being closed on 880 you can use 580 for the time being. we'll look at drive times in a few. let's check in with meteorologist mike nicco. >> hi, everybody. did you wash the car over the weekend? if you did it will get wet in many areas as mist and drizzle are the big story this morning. cool breeze is the big story this afternoon. let's look at live doppler 7. you see the low level clouds and

and so we went to my mom's room. and we looked heard people screaming. >> reporter: that same neighbor says he went outside and saw several police cars. five people were taken away in an ambulance. several people have been coming to the area for the past week to what are appears to be a vigil. few candles were lit at that location this morning. something like this happening obviously makes people in the neighborhood concerned about their safety. >> kind of, because i have a little 8-year-old sister. and when she heard the gunshots she got really scared. her first instinct was to hide behind the couch. >> reporter: and a car speed away after hearing the shots fired. we reached out to the san jose police and we have yet to hear back for more information on this shooting. reporting live in san jose, matt keller. developing news, the man accused of plowing a car into a crowd of people protesting a white supremacist rally is

expected to appear in court today. >> james fields jr. is charged with murder. he was shown with a known white supremacist group and 32-year-old heather heyer was killed. her mother said she died for standing up for what she believed in. >> heather's young life was not about hate and this young man who ran my daughter down mistakenly believed that hate will change the world. >> the army confirmed fields >> the army confirmed fields attended training. two troops were killed responding to the incident. there was a rally overnight in connection to the violence in charlottesville. we just got this new video. you can see hundreds of people in downtown atlanta. the rally held to show solidarity with the victims in charlottesville. it was not all peaceful though. what you're seeing on your

screen right now there is a monument that was vandalized at a local park. it was actually a statue of an angel that was spray painted. it was supposed to signify coming together. obviously not what happened last night. >> okay. in south bay, several rights supporters came together in a show of solidarity with the people of charlottesville. they gathered outside in a peaceful rally to unite against racism and white supremacy. >> it's important to stand together to resist white supremacy and resist the violence from the klan, from the neo-nazis, from the alt-right. >> organizers say they were seeking to end racial injustice and they encourage people to speak out and commit to action. more support for charlottesville came from the east bay. about a hundred people held a candlelight vigil in castro valley last night. they were encouraged to bring candles or tea lights to signify

peace and hope. it was to show the power of love and tolerance. a berkeley restaurant says its does not support the actions of those in charlottesville. top dog had a flurry of social media posts suggested a man at the rally worked at top dog. well, a sign on the restaurant door says effective saturday, 12th of august, cole white is no longer working at top dog. the actions of those in charlottesville are not supported by top dog. several uc berkeley students stopped by the restaurant yesterday. many of them horrified by the violence. >> i feel like it's good that top dog is taking a stand against this kind of stuff. it's crazy, 2017, we still have people who are so backwards, you know? who can't seem to wrap their heads around inclusivity. >> the employers at top dog had no comment. our coverage continues right here on our abc 7 news app. you can see video and photos from the rallies. we'll send out push alerts with any major information. two people accused of

killing a man at twin peaks are expected to be arraigned. 20-year-old san francisco resident fantasy decor and the other one is facing murder charges. movie scout ed french died last month. the motive for the murder was steal his camera. a teen killed a decade ago and the mother reminds us it remains unsolved. just 17 years old, aubreyas thd baker streets. mayor ed lee's office is offering a $250,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of whoever is responsible. aubrey's mother is at that intersection at 2:00 this afternoon hand out flyers. the b.a.r.t. police citizen review board will review new use of force rules. they were required to use the least amount of force necessary to make the arrest and the

recommendation is not binding. it serves to advise the department. nevertheless, the b.a.r.t. police are against the proposal. they say their standards of reasonableness is working just fine. a resident in river side county are back home after the so-called blaine fire forced 4:00 yesterday afternoon. east of the uc riverside campus. a thousand acres has burned. it's 44% contained and the cause is under investigation. no injuries or serious damage is reported. a 400 acre fire has forced the closure of a popular trail miseyo it started yesterday morning in the community of wawona. the facebook account shared this photo of smoke billows into the sky. that fire is burning in steep rocky and inaccessible terrain. officials say the residents should be prepared for potential evacuations today. napa county firefighters are putting out hot spots still

flaring up from the wildfire. the canyon fire has burnedf g 1. it's now 95% contained. firefighters are continuing to strengthen control line and work interior hot spots. the cause is under investigation. now, a traffic alert. >> from abc 7 mornings. >> okay, we still have our major problem here in san leandro this morning. all lanes of southbound 880 are closed at lewelling. this is all do to the shooting investigation. and we don't have any estimate on when we'll get the lanes back open. so right now we're looking at a four mile backup through san leandro, heading towards san lorenzo. i wanted to compare some speeds for you. six miles an hour is your average on southbound 880. that is basically gridlocked as we saw amy holly field sitting there a few minutes ago. state route 885 not a smaller

now from abc 7, live breaking news. >> coming up at 6:00, in san leandro, a major monday morning commute headache on 880 a therf >> yeah, amy hollyfield has been on the move. she is at the scene on lewelling boulevard. amy? >> reporter: and we just got briefed by the chp. not good news here. they're saying this could stay close until -- closed until 8:30 or 9:00 so that blows out the entire morning commute. you want to avoid this area. we are at lewelling boulevard. this is where cars are being forced to exit southbound 880. they cannot go any further because all lanes here are shut

down. we do have video a little closer to the crime scene to show you why these lanes are closed. they are investigating a shooting. they say it happened before 2:30 this morning on southbound 880. a white car pulled up next to a dark car, fired into the dark car. and did shoot the driver in the head. that driver is in critical condition. the car did crash. there were other people in the car but they were all okay. the white car got away. no arrtsav h they don't have a further description of the car for us this morning. they do think they have a lot work here still to do on this investigation so that's why all the lanes are closed all morning long. we tried to driving through this mess. it is at a stand still. the cars are crawling. it takes a long time to get through here. avoid it if you can. northbound looks okay. cars aren't slowing down too much to get a look at what's happening. northbound you can count
