down. we do have video a little closer to the crime scene to show you why these lanes are closed. they are investigating a shooting. they say it happened before 2:30 this morning on southbound 880. a white car pulled up next to a dark car, fired into the dark car. and did shoot the driver in the head. that driver is in critical condition. the car did crash. there were other people in the car but they were all okay. the white car got away. no arrtsav h they don't have a further description of the car for us this morning. they do think they have a lot work here still to do on this investigation so that's why all the lanes are closed all morning long. we tried to driving through this mess. it is at a stand still. the cars are crawling. it takes a long time to get through here. avoid it if you can. northbound looks okay. cars aren't slowing down too much to get a look at what's happening. northbound you can count on.

people protesting the white nationalists is making his first court appearance today. james fields jr. drove to the rally and he was captured chanting a message of white supremacy hours before the attack that killed 32-year-old heather heyer and injured 19 others. a counterprotester of the group said he saw the horrific scene. >> i saw the life pass from her eyes and i watched her die and from that moment on i swore to myself that i would not stop in the fight against white supremacy. issued a statement defending the president's response. the statement reads in part of course that includes white supremacist, kkk, neo-nazi and all extremist groups. >>ri> se u >> hundreds of people marched through the san francisco in solidarity with charlottesville. many waved flags and held signs denouncing racism. several people used flashlights and candles to light up civic

center plaza. the rally started with an organization criticizing the american civil liberties union be that the white nationalists should have their say. and a protest took place in latham square. protesters held candles calling for peace and unity. the rally was organized by our family coalition and hip-hop caucus. their facebook announcement asked people to bring poems on a theme of unity, peaceful transitions and overcoming white supremacy. oakland police are happy with the peaceful rallies in the wake of charlottesville. 450 marches in downtown last night, no vandalism, no arrests, no citations or injuries. that tweet referred to saturday's march. police in pleasanton are searching for three young men accused of attacking a homeless man. the man was sleeping under a bridge and investigators say the suspects shot the man in the arm and the back with a b-b gun and then hit with a hockey stick.

he flagged down for help and he is expected to survive. happening today, health care workers in oakland will rally in support of a nurse who is being deported. maria mendoza sanchez is a registered nurse at the hospital. immigration officials are deporting her and her husband back to mexico this week. the obama administration had let the couple stay in the u.s. on a year to year basis. because they had jobs and stayed out of legal trouble. their four children were born in the united states. senator dianne feinstein promised to help the couple return to the u.s. activists are accused the contra costa sheriff's department of colluding with immigration agents. they rallied outside the detention center yesterday. in a statement on the website, the sheriff's office says it does not arrest people on immigration status nor does it participate in immigration raids or carry out deportations.

good morning. welcome back. we have a maj problem in san leandro this morning. i'll step out of the way, live is fros from the scene. is amy hollyfield and her photographer. this is all traffic being forced off at 880 at lewelling boulevard. this has been going on since after 2:30 this morning. a person was shot in the head and is in critical condition so that investigation is ongoing likely until 8:30 or 9:00 this morning. you can see that gridlock on the off ramp. the entire freeway looks like this for four miles. stick to 580. a great day to ride b.a.r.t. whatever you do, get on southbound 808 as you head to the hay area this morning. 21 minutes in the green, 14 across the bay bridge.

virginia newspaper from charlottesville the daily progress reports a confederate heritage organization has asked for permission to gather at richmond's robert e. lee monument next month. the paper is reporting the group is called americans for richmond monument preservation and they haven't gotten permission yet. the paper said that the application is under review. it is reportedly scheduled for september 16th which would be roughly a month away from this saturday's chaos that ensued in charlottesville. that's the latest. >> thanks. speaking of charlottesville the makers of the tiki torch that you saw all over that v voi -- that video, they want y to they have no connection to the white nationalist rally. the company issued a statement denouncing the use of the torches and here's what it says. we don't support their message of the use of our products this way. our products are designed to help family and friends connect

with each other at home in their yard. new this morning, u.s. -- u.s. attorney jeff sessions talked to "good morning america" about the charlottesville attack. saying it's quote the definition of domestic terrorism in our statute. sessions also says the department of justice is pursuing it promising to advance the investigation and bring down the most serious charges possible. the car ramming attack happened after a white nationalist rally was called out. it ordered the crowds to disperse and the president condemn it as hatred, bigotry and violence on many sides. >> this is a president as you know who is known for his blunt talk. this was a white nationalist rally. will he say the name of the groups? >> well, we will -- he will say what he believes is appropriate. i think he probably will. >> sessions, the president may be talking to the country about the attack later today or some time soon.

speaking of the president, we're quite a ways from 2020 but president trump's re-election campaign has already released a commercial. >> democrats obstructing. the media attacking our president. career politicians standing in the way of success. >> the 30 second spot lists the president's enemies including the media and ends with a statement, americans are saying let president trump do his job. the creator of the hit abc show "scandal" i netflix. shonda rhimes leaving nbc after many years. she said she's looking forward to expanding to netflix where she's expected to produce new series. she did let abc know some time ago she planned to leave after her contract ends to start a new chapter in her career. no change here. likely for a couple more hours we'll see this closure, southbound 880.

all traffic being forced off at lewelling in the san leandro area. as you can see. that's the backup for folks trying to take that exit for that detour. here's what it looks like on the traffic maps. it is not fun. sig alert there at lewelling. this is all due to the shooting investigation. police are saying likely 8:30 or 9:00 this morning before we get the lanes back open. up to a five mile backup on that's north of state route 112. 185 for an alternate. stop and go on the surface streets or eastbound 580. that has remained in the green so that's a good option. as is b.a.r.t. this morning. so whatever you do, do not take southbound 880. anything else is looking better than that right now. in the meantime, a new problem in dublin. southbound 680, we have a rollover crash. that partially landed in the left lane and the other is on the left shoulder. sounds like no serious injury, a lot of drivers were helping to get the person out of the vehicle. they are okay so we'll hopefully get that cleared shortly.

sunday. looks like a pretty nice forecast. >> thank you. the attorney for the 18-year-old woman accused of driving drunk and live streaming the fatal crash say worn tires may have led to the crash. it led to the blowout that her 14-year-old sister dead. sanchez was intoxicated and she drove distracted and she was live streaming during the crash. she is charged with six charges. and an after school program is encouraging kids to stay active. a five week program is held at joaquin elementary school. children in preschool up to the eighth grade can race for trophies. over a hundred kids participated last year. more expected to sign up this year. and registration is still open. happening today, heads up if you plan to be in berkeley. thousands of incoming freshmen will be moving in to cal's residential halls. the university is expecting 7,000 students to move in today from 8:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m.

car. they shot the driver in the head. the cash did crash. the driver was taken to the hospital and he's in critical condition. he did have some passengers, they are all okay. the white car got away. they don't have a description of it more than it was white. no arrests have been made so as they gather evidence, the morning commute has just been ruined. southbound 880 is an area to avoid if you can. it is at a stand still. we are watching cars just sit here and wait. and eventually crawl, just a few inches before they end up stopping again. so southbound 880 is a disaster. here in san leandro while this investigation is under way and you heard him say it will be maybe close until -- it will be closed until 10:00 or 10:30 this morning. amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> it is brutal. southbound 880 for about five miles and with that new estimate

of -- oh 9:30, maybe 10:30 this morning, things are only going to get worse from here. this is a sig alert. southbound 880 fully blocked at lewelling in the san leandro area. so comparing a few speeds here, two miles an hour, i'm checking all the waze comments. we have some reports of vehicles overheating because they have been idling for so long. do not get on southbound 880. you can get on east 14th. that's a surface street so you have stop lights there. or you can use eastbound 580. you heard chp talking to amy on the scene. they are permitting big rigs and semis to use 580. typically they're restricted from the ard.ea580 for an alter or b.a.r.t. we haven't had any b.a.r.t. delays thisnior m that's a decent option too. let's go to meteorologist mike nicco with a look at the forecast. >> i see that 68 miles an hour.

hour. they say that five people were shot in this drive by shooting. this happened last night just before 10:30. it happened near the reed hill view airport. the san jose police found four men andro aa w gunshot wound. they were taken to the hospital with nonlife threatening injuries. a neighbor said several people have been coming to the area for the past week or so for what appears to be a vigil. a few candles were lit at the location this morning. something like this happening obviously makes people in the neighborhood concerned about their safety. of, because i hav little 8-year-old sister and when she heard the gunshots she got very carried and her first instinct was to hide behind the orr: and neighbors heard a car speed away after hearing the shots fire. obviously neighbors were very concerned about what happened in their neighborhood last night. five people were shot and taken to the hospital.

patterson are facing murder charges. decuir was the one who pulle the trigger on movie scout ed french last month. the motive was to steal his camera. the mother of a teen killed more than a decade ago is going to remind us thattette it -- that it remains unsolved. aubrey abrakasa a was shot and killed. the mayor's office is offering a $250,000 reward leading to the arrest to whoever i pre intersection at 2:00 handing out flyers. the b.a.r.t. police will consider new use of force rules for officers. back in may, the watchdog group required them to use the least amount of force necessary to make an arrest. the recommendation though is not binding. it's simply an advisory for the department. nevertheless, bart police are against that proposal. saying their standard of reasonableness is working just

right around 9:30 and 10:00. i'll show you how bad the backup is. the search is on for a killer after someone stabbed a man to death in milpitas. policedo the business on windsor street where they found the man dead. they say the 54-year-old was stabbed a number of times. they have not released his name. investigators are asking for any possible witnesses to come forward. new details in the theft in the north bay. lots of donations coming in for a marine recruiter and his family who were targeted by thieves. pictures from wine country marine shows sergeant rafael aldama and family with several of the donations received since word of the theft became public on friday. they relocated last month and someone stole the moving van with everything init so. the bay area coming through for them. they have new furniture for the dining room, living room and bedroom and $3,000 in donations. a man who lost his loved ones in a freak accident may lose his home. in january, gary classen's wife

we have our major traffic alert in san leandro this morning. all lanes of southbound 880 remain closed at lewelling. this is for the shooting investigation. about a five mile backup right now. stick to 580 or take b.a.r.t. this morning. in two, the reason for the traffic backup. someone was shot in the head earlier this morning on southbound 880. reports are that three people were in a car around 2:30. one of them suffered the injury. number three, a drive by shooting in san jose leaves five people hurt. police say the victim's four men and one woman is expected to recover. one neighbor said he herd gunshots on vista glenn drive. a man accused of driving into the crowd in charlottesville is coiou grt t . james fields jr. faces a murder charge for almost killing a woman on saturday. hundreds of people in the bay area rallied in support of charlottesville. this was at latham park in oakland. demonstrators called for the end to racism and hatred.
